As a kid I remember being able to make it through the game being hit around 3 to 0 times, no deaths. Then I got to the Metropolis Zone...

This game was an immense part of my childhood. My great grandfather bought it for me when I lived with him for a while. I could make it to the end with all of the chaos emeralds, 40+ lives. I never could time the hits on Mecha Robotnik while he was walking though
You're an avid gamer as I see, I'm 16 and I still kinda suck at playing Sonic The Hedgehog tho, maybe because I've normally tend to play with my cellphone's touch input, but a lot of people play like that and they still play it pretty good, so that's just an skill problem for me (kinda).

Dude, Mania is actually a fun game. Sonic 2 is just frustrating and mediocre. Trust me, I've been playing through it via the Sega Genesis Classics on Switch and I'm about to beat the game. Sonic 2 sucks.

How eggman could have won,
1: Make the egg drill faster and taller.
2: make all the platforms flip!
3: make the arrows explode when touch, so sonic can't hit you.
4: Remove all of the things that let sonic launch himself to you.
5: remove the land so it's all just lava.
6: go farther up, then drill as well.
7: Same thing with number 5, remove all the platforms.
8: create four lines of balls, so then sonic will not hit you in a while. Also make the egg minions HUGE.
9: make all the platforms spikes, and make three laser shooters with huge lasers.
10: Make silver Sonic stronger, faster, and not stand for so long.
11: mabye add more things like bomb dispensers, more arms, and longer ranged shots, lasers, and faster movement speed. If sonic still kills you, block off the exit for sonic so Sonic can't escape.

I remember as a kid just prolonging the boss battles just to hear the music play. I was really ever good at this game, or many games for that matter, I only can remember getting Toni think a level or two past the casino if that but I have such great memories playing this game!
I remember when I was playing this I got a version where you can play as tails himself without sonic and I completely skipped Hammer . All I did was use his ability to fly

The thing I dislike about the Chemical plant Zone fight is the chance of falling in the chemicals after defeating Robotnik because of those spinning platforms. The fact that you can die and get a game over after defeating Robotnik is the worst part.
