I really feel bad for both Tom and the alien “Greta”. Tom is stranded in deep space with no hope of rescue and Greta struggles with keeping him as comfortable and happy as possible in his final days. Just imagine how many times she has had to reset things because Tom insists on being shown the truth and she feels obligated to comply even though she knows it will break his mind every time.
The original short story this episode was based on gives a lot more detail. Greta was also stranded there and she built a home there because she had no hope of escaping. Then more ships of different alien races began to get stranded. She'd put them in the coma and eventually she'd give them the choice to wake up. Most of the aliens who chose to wake up either went insane or killed themself. Some stayed awake and also inhabit the "nest" the Blue Goose was actually the first human ship to crash there.

This and Zima Blue are the best episodes of season 1. Both are based on stories by Alastair Reynolds and if you're into science fiction books, I can highly recommend him.
Season 1 of LD+R is very good. If you are wondering, Thom's coworkers died because of the drawings on their capsules (that's against regulation). Due to a long travel time, some of the paint chipped away and damaged the pods, killing both crew members. And the reason for the sex, was for Greta to make sure Thom didn't leave a soulmate on Earth and that he won't kill himself the moment he finds out he can't go back.
if you still confuse what happen. imagine you are a bullet and get shot by a gun. but instead of hit the target which have a damper to slow you down. by some mistake in the system ( human didn't make that portal it's kinda like ancient tech leave behind by alien civilization ) you go 1 degree to the right and travel at that speed for hundred of years.
Greta is the perfect Predator. Using Manipulation and Seduction to keep their prey docile and obedient while they feed off of him for years and years. She said " I take care of all the lost souls that end up here..." She's seasoned, experienced. This episode reminds me of " Modern Society " in many ways.... Here we are helpless, Us being (Tom) and Society (Greta) has everything imaginable to keep everyone comfortable, and Docile. While there is a (Whole other Truth) hidden from Us, while we are manipulated in a controlled environment. It really make one think, what reality is being kept from me? and what reality am I being Fed...
But she's not a predator, she's mearly trapped there too and trying to ease the suffering of others. The source material has more details and other survivors choose to be awake vs in the nice coma
@Datareel Nope. She's a benevolent creature who only wants to ease the passing of those who got stuck in her side of the Galaxy and they cannot go back. They die because they starve to death. They have nothing to eat, not because shes feeding off of them.
