Invincibles gore is so much more effective than in most other shows because it can actually be lighthearted, wholesome, hopeful. Makes scenes like the train even more horrifying and heartbreaking.
That’s one of the reasons why I don’t like The Boys anymore. They just overuse the gore and violence for no real story telling purpose. It’s just excessive and in your face so much that I got to the point of thinking “Oh, this again? Whatever.”
To clarify, Nolan didnt think Mark would get powers/be a viltrumite. So Omniman planned on spending 100 years with him and Debbie and conquering Earth after they died. Rhen Mark got powers and Omniman realized the time was now. Thats why he said he'd be better off if Mark never got his powers in Ep1
100 years is _very_ generous. After a few decades at most, people not in the know about Nolan's superhero identity would've noticed that Mark and Debbie were visually aging and he wasn't.
Believe it or not, Mark won that fight. He lost the physical battle absolutely, but that last line to his dad was when he killed Omni-man the viltrimite soldier that was enlisted to dominate Earth.
Omni-man thinks of humans the same way humans think of animals or insects, due to the difference in innate strength and lifespan, it's difficult for him to come to grips with the value of human life. Not defending him or anything, but he probably doesn't think of himself as evil, just a part of something so much more advanced and powerful that the only logical choice is to submit. (Similar to how humans subjugated weaker indiginous groups during the age of Imperialism) Awesome character. Deplorable, but awesome.
Yeah, a lot of people immediately take his comment about Debbie being like a pet to him as this callous, cruel thing to say, that it proves he never cared and only ever pretended to; because our own preconcieved notions about what we call pets and how we view ourselves compared to other species on earth are hard to shake. For instance, evidently being the most intelligent species on the planet, we decided to use intellect/the capacity for complex mental processes as the main trait to determine things like worth, how many rights and protections they deserve, etc. (Hence why a dog has more legal protection than an amoeba). However, if we view things from the POV of a Viltrumite, then that classification doesn't really work anymore. They've been to multiple planets inhabited by different forms of intelligent life, so they cannot use intellect as a metric. So what do they do? Simple: they use physical strength. They're quite literally a might-makes-right-society. That's why Nolan calling Debbie his pet isn't demeaning in the way we think, it's just him acknowledging that he's going to outlive and mourn her for a long time. So really, it's quite a tragic comment for him. Of course, you can still read it the human way and that still works (god knows Debbie does), but understanding how he truly meant it makes that moment just that much more interesting, no?
Yeah, it's just like our relationship with ants. We assume the role of viltrumites and ants assume the roles of Homo sapiens. Just like we don't care about ants on a regular basis, it's the same for viltrumites. They never considered recognizing inferior species as people.
@@m.s.5370I think Nolan calling Debbie a “pet” is more a reflection of where his head is re: “I’m Viltrumite, she’s a cute little distraction” than an issue with semantics.
The thing about Nolan that really needs to be remembered is that up until he left earth, he was simply doing what he thought was best for his species and was being loyal to them. Every country in the world has people that do very violent things in the name of their country. The author of the comic pointed this out about Nolan and many of the other viltrumites.
I suspected, as a long time fan of the channel, the subway scene would get Arianna badly. Even not factoring in the horrific carnage, it’s such a cruel and spiteful thing for Nolan to do to Mark. Literally turning him into a weapon to slaughter the people he wants to protect.
2:45 people get extremely heated, at this comment, understandably so, however, it makes sense coming from him. He will outlive every single human he knows currently(his wife included), cats and dogs typically only live around 12 years, yet we love them all the same. Omni-man's human wife, will live basically a tiny spec of his lifetime. In the grand scheme of things, we would have lived for a much longer time with our pet than he did with his human wife.
I understand that people don't really get Omni man's point because of all the people dying during the fight but seeing people just dismissing his dialogue without much thought is still a bit infuriating. Just one example is him calling debbie a 'pet' if you think about it, it's like having a wife for like a week in your life. There will be attachment and love but in the 70 something years of your life, that one week is not very significant.
I don't go around murdering hamsters, let alone hamsters with human inteligence. Omni man's points are fun to think about but ultimately yes, easily dismissed. Most crazy and evil has some sort of justification that makes sense if you think at a surface level
@@waldoman7he doesn’t see humans as hamsters. He sees them as ants. Ants that he’ll stomp on if they’re in the way. He sees Debbie as a pet (in reality he actually sees her as more, but is blinded by indoctrination) as she would in the grand scheme of things be a fleeting memory to him.
@@waldoman7I mean, he has to do what he does because the alternative is a viltrumite invasion. It’s like when people justify the use of the atomic bomb on Japan during WW2, so they wouldn’t need to do a naval invasion, which would have cost more lives
@@Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmiam that's...not parallel. If it were the nazis and you were an anti-nazi German bombing Paris so that hitler wouldn't nuke it, that'd be parallel. But omni man didn't claim that. He claimed full loyalty to the cause.
If you think about it, you can have a close friend for a year who will change your life. The “pet” wasn’t referring to the length of her life expectancy but rather the distance between humans and Viltrumites.
IMO In episode 1 Omni man wasn’t happy about mark getting powers, cause he hoped Mark and Debie wouldn’t live to the day and won’t have to watch him conquering planet, but since Matk got it he would have to do it in front of his eyes anyway
My absolute favorite thing about this episode, and probably the season as a whole, is that the person who actually stopped Nolen was Debbie. Slowly, over the course of the last 17 years, she changed him in a way that made him leaving a possible outcome. There's a great visual representation of that towards the end of this episode, when Mark goes to ask Debbie if she wants to order pizza he's flying right up until the moment he sees her crying. Then he lands and actually walks away.
Remember this line at 12:46. "What will you have after 500 years?". I do think it will take more than a decade in animating the whole Invincible comic but yeah, It's a journey
btw by doing that thing when he left the planet he betrayed Viltrum empire, and he knows it - thats why it is so "hard" to do it for him 12:46 "My immortal wife"
i dont know how many time has past since the last time i see this, alone, dont knowing nothing, and i cried, and now, with two girls reacting, knowing everything, i cried again when he say "you dad", thats the most fucking heartbroken thing i ever seen
In all honesty it makes sense from Omnimans point of view, not saying he is right, but imagine this. You are born on a planet thousands of years ago and taught on that planet for thousands of years that might makes right, most species dont live a fraction of your life and when you compare Viltrumite technology and power to any other species Viltrumites always seem to have the best stuff. It would be hard to think yourself superior, and bringing other species to your level as benevolent. Omniman is likely thousands of years old and barely looks 40-50, He has spent 20 years on earth, a speck of time in the long run, like a week/month long trip, its surprising he was affected at all by his time on earth. And as for the pet comment, yes its insulting, but think about a dog or cat you love more than anything, how long they live compared to you, there are people out there that love their pets more than people. It doesn't diminish the love you feel for them, but them passing is something that you have to learn to deal with. Another thing, his comment about needing to know for sure about Mark being a Viltrumite is related to the fact that he was planning on delaying his invasion until after Debbie and Mark were dead from old age, he didnt want Mark to be a Viltrumite. Then think about this, Omniman is not the strongest viltrumite, and as far as Mark knows there is an entire empire of them. Omniman is showing mark what fighting back against just one of them will do. And Omniman likely is the nicest Viltrumite you will ever see. Logically giving in to the Viltrum empire is the smart move and would involve less deaths.
Realistically speaking what the Viltrumites do is the same as us bulldozing over Anthills, or putting them into Farms for our amusement. We don't give them Ants a second thought after wiping them out or imprisoning them, because they're simple Animals. So it's kinda ironic to me that People somehow expect a different treatment when we suddenly find ourselves in the Ants position.
God I’m sick of seeing this comment. Viltrumites are god damn eugenicist space nazis. These “ants” that they kill are not ants. They are people with thinking conscious minds, just like viltrumites. It’s one group having guns and missiles, and tanks, and the other side is labelled “ants” because they don’t have guns tanks and missiles. Fucking YAWN with this shit.
The difference is of course consciousness. No one cares about ants, but when you move up to dogs a lot of people care. See how people react when a puppy gets hurt. Of course that increased care with consciousness is a human thing. No reason to expect that same logic from a different species. @@CedricBassman
@@MarijnvdSterre People react different to hurt puppies because they're seen as cute, nothing more. Not because of their consciousness. If that was the Reason, Humans wouldn't treat other Humans like shit for no reason. Hell, there are dozens of other Animals ranking way higher than Dogs when it comes to consciousness, but we as a Species are currently in our best effort to wipe them off the face of the Earth. So your claim to increased care with consciousness is not even a Human trait to begin with.
If mark was just a Human, Nolan could just wait. Eventually Debbie and even Mark would die and for Nolan that would be like a blink. But Mark awaken his powers, he was a Viltrumite and so he can live so much time, so waiting was not an option anymore and wouldn't change nothing. You can say that Mark awakening his powers make Omniman act sooner.
yeah it explains his reaction when mark says he got his powers, the way Nolan says "Are you sure?" very seriously and then goes on to say he thinks they'd be better off if Mark never got his powers at all.
god what a fight. thst the physical battle didn't matter to EITHER of them is so poetic. Nolan fighting to convince himself, Mark fighting to save his dad from himself. what an incredible scene.
also it's not just that he has the crazy look in his eyes, his eyes are still injured from when immortal jammed him in the eyes, why his eyes are blood shot and give off that look.
this episode still makes my heart hurt like crazy because watching Nolan fight Mark but Mark got his butt kicked was bad but when Mark told Nolan he'd still have him even after 500 years. that makes me shed a tear 🥺😢😭
But if.. he got with Debbie and had Mark.. why? I heard he was purposely wanting a child and when Mark and Debbie died he'd just "start again" or "have another" like he said in the episode
I don't think anyone was ever ready for the "you dad" part...that hits hard. The pure silence and bliss of the moment, animated and conjured to perfection

*Mark endured a devastatingly brutal beating that left him with missing teeth, broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a nearly-pulverized chin -- the latter, in large part, due to tanking a subway train with his face. In other words, by the end, Mark's body was so battered and bruised that he could not even manage to take half a breath without severe pain that visibly provoked tears . the only way you could feel his side of being a Viltrumite is our lifespan to flyes or certain animals. a fruit could usually live up to a week and we have 80 years on them. They're nothing to us but something to be studied or annoyed by. He has lived 1000 of years easily and in that term of time which is basically an hour to two to him he has had this change of heart.
When Mark says "dad?!" After Nolans speech, you can see Nolan looks around for a split second, almost thinking "who hurt my son, who did this?" And then he looks down and realises it was him, this fearfull and sick feeling from his stomach upon seeing his son bloody and broken was his fault, his fathering instincts kicked in and instantly clashed with his Viltromite instincts to fight and kill, the conflict was too strong he had to leave the planet, crazy heavy stuff.

I waited the whole time it was miserable.

Whatever.”
Is no one gonna mention how they oiled their “things” up? They’re the definition of a bop
Already watched this show multiple times so I was enjoying a different show
When episode 8 aired. I had to pause it multiple times and process what happened. It was so intense
Nolan: what will you have after 500 years?!
Mark: you dad, i still have you
Immortal: me too
I love watching everyones reaction to episode 8. Everyone freaks out when the truth is revealed.
Believe it or not, Mark won that fight. He lost the physical battle absolutely, but that last line to his dad was when he killed Omni-man the viltrimite soldier that was enlisted to dominate Earth.
when he said "you dad" i just lost it 😭
Omni-man thinks of humans the same way humans think of animals or insects, due to the difference in innate strength and lifespan, it's difficult for him to come to grips with the value of human life.
@@Mayakran those aren't mutually exclusive. I agree that that's what it's about, but that's not what most people initially see, hence my comment.
@@m.s.5370 I must not be thinking or explaining myself very well. I’ll address it later.
Just discovered that Maple is a very multi-talented star😍
Let's go! That thumbnail says it all!
Also yay, glitter! Fun!
J.K. Simmons also known as J. Jonah Jameson did such a great job acting as Omni-Man!
Lol, I had to stop and get myself together during the shimmy at the beginning
My goodness maple maple maple! I'm trying to watch the reaction lol.
When I first saw the "I'd still have you" scene, I bawled. Mark's unrequited love for his father, even after what he did and said, moved me.
13:42. He's not trying to destroy anything. He's getting the planet ready for Viltrum rule and he needs Mark to stop fighting for that to happen.
Absolutely phenomenal editing to put this video together! You two were amazing! IT was a brutal finale
Me seeing the thumbnail: Yup. That is the correct expression for this episode 😅
Remember this line at 12:46. "What will you have after 500 years?".
I do think it will take more than a decade in animating the whole Invincible comic but yeah, It's a journey
btw by doing that thing when he left the planet he betrayed Viltrum empire, and he knows it - thats why it is so "hard" to do it for him
12:46 "My immortal wife"
14:45 his point is that it’ll simply haunt you for esentially forever, compared to just not caring for mortals.
i dont know how many time has past since the last time i see this, alone, dont knowing nothing, and i cried, and now, with two girls reacting, knowing everything, i cried again when he say "you dad", thats the most fucking heartbroken thing i ever seen
"What will you have after 500 years"
"The Immortal, Dad. I'd still have The Immortal"
W Comment
@@MarijnvdSterre
People react different to hurt puppies because they're seen as cute, nothing more.
I loved the last episode of the first season. Not what I thought this show was going to be. And thank you Maple for the glitter bobs. 🎉😎🤯
Glitter on the left girl got me feeling some way looking at them
They both had glitter threw me off
If mark was just a Human, Nolan could just wait.
It’s so funny that JK Simmons voices both Tenzin and Nolan.
"Think, Mark!" is such an iconic meme now.
"I'd still have you" is soul crushing
god what a fight. thst the physical battle didn't matter to EITHER of them is so poetic.
Nolan decided he had to do this mow when he realized mark was a viltrimite I think he was gonna wait until mark and Debbie died and then do it
But if.. he got with Debbie and had Mark.. why? I heard he was purposely wanting a child and when Mark and Debbie died he'd just "start again" or "have another" like he said in the episode
I don't think anyone was ever ready for the "you dad" part...that hits hard. The pure silence and bliss of the moment, animated and conjured to perfection

That's the problem with government men. They put themselves in a position where they think they have the right to make decisions like that. They don't see the grand scheme, they only see the world through the lenses they craft in it.

One of the ironic things is Mark calls himself Invincible. But spends a lot of the series helpless.

I'm so ready for this!!

Nolan is thousands of years old. His time on earth has probably felt like the equivalent of several months to a year. Going on a work trip and it completely changes the core ideals and beliefs you've had your entire life. Nolan could have EASILY k*lled Mark, but he held back, only doing enough harm that he'd heal from. He also never put a hand on Debbie. Omni-man is such an interesting character to me
Same here. I find him to be a very intriguing presence.
I always thought during the think mark scene oniman was really talking to himself trying to reason his purpose while projecting it on mark.
Episode 1: Omniman trains his son
Episode 8: Omniman trains his son
When Omni-Man flew through the portal earlier in the season and said, "“Earth isn’t yours to conquer” - That hits a little harder now, eh?
*Mark endured a devastatingly brutal beating that left him with missing teeth, broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a nearly-pulverized chin -- the latter, in large part, due to tanking a subway train with his face. In other words, by the end, Mark's body was so battered and bruised that he could not even manage to take half a breath without severe pain that visibly provoked tears . Even so, Mark still made sure to tell his father that he'll never stop loving him. What a champ.* ❤🩹

Subway scene is the whole next level. Wow
the only way you could feel his side of being a Viltrumite is our lifespan to flyes or certain animals. a fruit could usually live up to a week and we have 80 years on them. They're nothing to us but something to be studied or annoyed by. He has lived 1000 of years easily and in that term of time which is basically an hour to two to him he has had this change of heart.
“You’re not wrong Omniman you’re just an asshole!”
Any other Viltrumite would have killed Mark.
The violence was so over the top that by the time the train scene happened I couldn’t help but laugh at how insane the collateral damage was.
I was laughing but not because I thought it was stupid or funny but because there was just so MUCH.
Well said. Emotional rollercoaster.
