Mortal Kombat Movie Description:
Hunted by the fearsome warrior Sub-Zero, MMA fighter Cole Young finds sanctuary at the temple of Lord Raiden. Training with experienced fighters Liu Kang, Kung Lao and the rogue mercenary Kano, Cole prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions to take on the enemies from Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe.
Mortal Kombat is a 2021 martial arts fantasy film based on the video game franchise of the same name and a reboot of the Mortal Kombat film series. The film stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Max Huang, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. It is directed by Simon McQuoid (in his feature directorial debut), from a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham and a screen story by Russo and Oren Uziel. The film follows Cole Young, a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who is unaware of his hidden lineage or why assassin Sub-Zero is hunting him down. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm against Outworld.
Following the critical and commercial failure of the 1997 film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, a third Mortal Kombat film languished in development hell for a period of nearly two decades. In late 2010, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema (whose parent company acquired the franchise from Midway Games in 2009) began developing a new film, with Kevin Tancharoen serving as director from a script written by Uziel in the wake of their Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film. James Wan was announced as a producer in August 2015 and McQuoid was hired as director in November 2016. Production took place at Adelaide Studios in Adelaide and at other locations in South Australia. Principal photography occurred from September to December 2019.
Mortal Kombat was released theatrically internationally on April 8, 2021, and was then released in the United States on April 23, simultaneously in theaters in Dolby Cinema, IMAX and 4DX and on the HBO Max streaming service. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $83.6 million worldwide against a $55 million budget. It became HBO Max's most-successful film launch to date.

I'm a sub zero guy myself, so I was stoked he was a major kharacter, and they showcased him perfectly. This movie did exactly what it needed to do. It gave us the rated R mortal kombat we all wanted as kids. I agree, I didn't like Cole all that much, but everyone else was kool. Kano was hilarious.

I was a Scorpion fan myself, and this movie made me super hyped. The opening of the film was the best it could have been
This movie left me wanting more from the original main characters. However, SubZero was perfect!
Johnny Cage should've been the protagonist of the first movie. Comic relief and fish out of water character in one. Then sidetrack him for someone more serious in the second movie.

True, in my opinion, they should've followed the game's characters in important ways. Started off with the OGs from the first game.

- The sequel is already being filmed! (Ryan Reynolds even offered his candidacy)
- The transformation of Jax's prostheses is explained by the fact that they are made of unearthly material
- Kung Lao was specifically killed so that Liu Kang had a motive for revenge on Shang Tsung
- Kitana and Jade were supposed to appear in the film, but the budget did not allow (they only set aside an Easter egg in the Temple in the form of Kitana's fan)
- The vampire Nitara, in principle, did not play a particularly important role in games (this I tell you as a fan of the series)
- Mileena will most likely be resurrected by Shang Tsung in the Pits of Flesh...As it was in the games (for it is not by chance that the bodies of Bi-Khan and Goro were moved because Bi will become a Noob Saibot and Goro is the prince of the Shokan race)

Eh.... Can't say I agree. Mr. Plot Armor kind of killed the vibe for me, that and the fact _we didn't get a fucking tournament the ENTIRE point of Mortal Kombat._ Other than that it was alright, if they took out the stand-in it'd have been a lot better I think even if they didn't replace him with a character that actually exists.

It was mediocre at best. Kano was cool. Dead. Kung Lao was cool. Dead. Cole and his daughter, horrrrriblllleeeee characters. Goro looked like shit. They did subzero right. Especially considering now bi han has the chance to be in the next one as noob saibot. Get rid of Cole, bring in johnn6 and focus on the tournament and not some dumb shit new charcter.
Kano was easily the best part of the movie, every scene he was in was better just because he was there. They really should have have Johnny Cage as the main character if the needed a fish out of water person to follow, him playing off Kano would have been hilarious.
I love Johnny Cage but I kinda like Cole Young he's a welcome and great addition to the franchise

Jax was in both Mortal Kombat movies. He has a small cameo in the first movie, and he's one of the main characters in Annihilation, played by a different actor.
As soon as Kung Lao showed up and stood next to Liu Kang I was like, "SHAOLIN MONKS MOVIE!!"
We can break down the movie and point out its flaws, but overall, I feel like it grounded MK enough. I'm excited to see the sequel and the actual tournament.
Cole's story resembles Takeda's in game, but I can appreciate a movie original kharacter.
A little disappointed my boy Reptile got bodied so early, but Noob Saibot being teased was cool, just hope Ermac makes an appearance soon
Truth. Reptile is my favourite character, but he's usually the one who gets the most screwed over in game and adaptation, little more than hero fodder as a filler villain(in "Scorpions Revenge", for example.)
I think the worst part was they had a no name nobody just suddenly get his power and body Goro, the undefeated champion. They should've kept it like the original movie where he was tricked and not just outright beaten down.

This was pretty damn good. Hiroyuki Sanada nailed it as Scorpion. If I had to pick a favorite series, I choose Soul Calibur.
Soul Calibur is fantastic. My brother in law and I played SC2 so freaking much, the GameCube version with Link.

Yeah, Cole was nonnegotiable with the higher-ups. They would absolutely not let the movie go on without a newbie audience-surrogate main character. Pretty much everyone working on this movie is a personal fan of MK, as is Cole's actor and he certainly does his job but the character was kind of destined to be the weakest part of the movie. I'm just confused why they didn't take any other MK character that's at least vaguely close to being an average joe and have him be uninitiated, like Johnny Cage.

Hell, Stryker's even more of the every man than Johnny. Would have preferred Johnny, but when I think of the every man, I don't think of world-famous movie stars.

Was never a big MK guy growing up but this movie was still cool to see. My favorite fighting series is still Tekken and that probably won't change
The actors who played Scorpion and Sub-Zero signed preliminary contracts to appear in up to four films total.
And, yes, we have one sequel confirmed so far and a spin-off tv show for HBOmax
Hopefully it gets proper time and budget this go around. Because this one was a mess due to not having a lot of time or money to work with.
Them picking Joe Taslim for Sub Zero was the perfect choice, the movie was good i didn't care too much for the Cole character I just feel like it wasn't a good fit but everything else was awesome and left me wanting more. I hope they do a second film in the future
My problem is it's a movie about a tournament, that never happens lol. Also Cole was a requirement for the studio as an audience substitute. My problem with that is Johnny Cage was always that in the games, so he wasn't necessary.
Yep, in Mk95 Johnny was the guy that audience feel connected to cause he did not treat anything seriously and had that autoirony touch. Cole is boring and unnecessary as fuck.
We need to give all the credit to the guys playing subzero and scorpion. How crazy good and skilled they are at fighting still and fast. Dude playing subzero in his 60s and I read they had to ask him to slow down because he was moving too fast for the camera
better than MK Annihilation, but not as good as the OG Mortal Kombat movie, but that's my opinion.

Cole is an anchor character. He gets everything explained to him so the audience gets exposition. They could’ve done him better but what’s done is done
I've always liked sub zero and Kung Lao I liked how they incorporated each characters fatalities. But I wasn't expecting Cole to be scorpion's ancestor I was expecting the new competitor to be a female ,because raden saved the baby girl in the beginning, they never told us how many years later this tournament happened or what happened to the little girl.

Karl Urban from the boys has been cast as Johnny Cage and honestly I fucking love that. I thought this was one of the better video game movies and I’m exited for the sequel. They showed love to the games with all the fatalities and signature moves. Seeing fatalities in live action was amazing and I hope we see more. I think the sequel needs to actually have the tournament and have scorpion be in it for more than 5 minutes.

Favorite character for me was Sub-Zero in the original, but after that, I've always favored Kung Lao whenever he was in the game. I also enjoy how Shang Tsung plays in MK11.
I love Kung Lao for personal reasons. Then in Mortal Kombat X they gave us Kung Jin, who I loved, but also hated. Loved to hate. But for me, it's always been the ladies. Primarily Kitana. But also, Skarlet, Tanya, Jade, and Mileena. And then came Cassie and Jacquie.

In the original story of Scorpion it was actually Quan Chi that killed Scorpion's family Quan Chi uses shape-shifting magic to kill his family and clan and manipulated Scorpion to kill Sub-Zero but successfully creating Bi-Han into Noob Saibot also the Lin Kuel and the Shirai Ryu are Clan rivals strangely the Lin Kuel Grandmaster wants to turn their warriors into cyborgs (Cyrax and Sektor)

I love how Shang Tsung isn't playing the role the way the original did unless he has to say the "Souls are mine" line, then he tries SO hard to sound like the original. You can tell they made him say that, too.
Scorpion has always been my personal favorite. The intro to this film was so amazing. I just wish they would have featured him much more in this film.

I read that the reason Johnny Cage wasn't in the movie was that they only wanted one comedic character this time, and went for Kano.
I played as Liu Kang. But once he was first introduced in Mortal Kombat 3, I played always as Stryker.

My fav MK fighters were both Sub-Zero's, Sonya, Mileena, Scorpion, Kung Lao. The Guy who fought Jax his name is Reiko, he was one of the Generals to Shao Kahn's army. That Succubus first showed up in MK Deadly Alliance.

My biggest problem with this movie was that they have so many characters from the game that they could've chosen to focus on and make the main character, but instead they created someone entirely new and gave him the lamest power possible. You can get beat up a lot and keep fighting? Wow, you made his power literally just a physical manifestation of Plot Armor.
Yeah I wouldn't even of mind if they made him smoke or something and jus changed the backstory if they couldn't think of sum better

So basically the original sub zero was a bad guy but his brother on the other hand wasn’t a bad guy which he is the one in the recent games. Sub zeros brother even helped out the good guys in the original second movie. The og sub zero at the end of the movie when he left he went to hell and turned into noob saibot you can tell me if I’m wrong but I hope noob will be in the second movie.
The actor who played Kano in the first movie is the reason Kano is Australian, originally Kano was Japanese American but he just decided he wanted to do a Australian accent for the movie (he wasn’t even Australian, if I remember right.)

. My favorite characters when I used to play were Liu Kang, Kitana and SubZero.
I like that they switched up the lore a bit and this time Scorpian is the wronged party cause when I think back (which was why I loved playing SubZero) SubZero was the one whose's family was destroyed by Scorpian.
I liked about 30 percent of what was in the movie, there were some really strong parts, like Liu Kang's character and others, but they literally gave the main unknown character plot armor as his power lol.
