Burger King is special to RDJ. Supposedly the moment he decided to turn his life around with his addiction was when he had a really bad tasting whopper after he was essentially blacklisted in Hollywood. His friend Johnny depp advocated for him and this movie was a huge risk. And it ended up jump starting his career bigger than ever and created the biggest cinematic universe
@@PilloTheStar no it isn't.... It's just disgusting to you but it's not to others... While I do agree you can make a better burger at home... Their's isn't complete trash
@@PilloTheStar others replied, but it was RDJ that said it was the drugs that made it taste bad and that was the point BK saved his life. They didn't sponsor the movie at ask, but Downey insisted on them being there.
Fun fact: Tony eating cheese burgers is actually a call back to one of Robert Downy Jr's road to rehab. When he was younger in his acting career, Robert got into a lot of drugs and went to a pretty dark place. One time he went to Burger King and said that the burger was so disgusting, it actually gave him a moment of clarity. In that moment he decided to clean himself up. From there he threw his drugs into the ocean and then checked himself into a rehab clinic. Also you have to keep in mind it wasn't that the burger was disgusting, it was a burger that he normally liked. But he realized at that moment that his drug addiction had gotten so bad that he couldn't even enjoy a burger.
also in an interview, he said the exact same story, but Rdj also had a gram of coke in his but, stopped in at burgerking for a hit, got that cheeseburger and apparently his agent called him and said he had to see him asap (for the ironman lead) gross burger and role motivated him to get clean, and now we all see him as Tony Stark
He's probably one of the better known successful comeback career actors. I remember when his name was a joke, a reference to out of control addiction. He was in a movie in the 80's called Less Than Zero which basically mirrored his troubled life.
Downey had been fired from TV and removed from every film talks he had when he was arrested in 2003. Since then he had been completely sober. 5 years before Iron Man. He was also completely unhirable until Mel Gibson Cosigned on his liability insurance. He wasn't cast until some time in 2006. Even then Kevin himself said that casting RDJ and Iron Man was one of the biggest risks Marvel Studios ever took. Coincidentally I can completely believe that RDJ's struggled with substance abuse is what makes him so amazing as Tony Stark. He literally lived through the same troubles as comic Tony Starks life.
@@robwalsh9843 I credit Less Than Zero for keeping me the hell away from drugs. RDJ was too believable in that. We've lost so many truly talented people to drug addictions, I was thrilled to see RDJ turn his life around.
I like that they did the buildup to Tony's official suit. Too many shows and movies nowadays rush through that to them being proficient at what they are.. It helps humanize them to show they worked hard to get where they are..
Its....in my opinion....a similar reason why Green Lantern was bad. I know the actual comic character does just get thrown in to having all of his powers all at once including The suit the ring creates for him. But all we really get in that movie is a very brief, and pretty lame, training session. I certainly prefer Marvel..... Outside of Zach Snyder fixing Justice League... But I do hope that they give Green Lantern another shot at a movie. Obviously not with Ryan Reynolds......well actually....I wonder if Marvel actors are contractually not allowed to accept movie rolls from DC or vice versa. I cant recall a crossover actor though and Reynolds is Deadpool. He came back as a much better deadpool than that joke in the Wolverine movie. I fully believe Ryan Reynolds could easily do a fantastic job as Green Lantern again if the movie was made well.
@@kuivia No joke and it's everything about them upgrading including the way he puts the suit on. Oddly... Iron man 2 is my least favorite movie with him but for some reason that briefcase suit has always been my favorite.
"What really happened to him in the comics?" I scrolled down for a while and didn't see anyone answer the question. In the comics, Stark was in Vietnam (later retconned to Siancong) to oversee the U.S. military's use of his inventions when he accidentally triggered a trip wire trap. "Red Terrorist" soldiers found him and brought him to Wong-Chu. It was determined that Stark had one week to live before the shrapnel reached his heart, but they did _nothing_ about it, opting instead to trick Stark into making them a weapon in exchange for the services of a surgeon to remove the shrapnel. Stark saw through the lie, knowing that if it was possible to remove the shrapnel, they would have already done so. Wong-Chu forced Professor Ho Yinsen (a Chinese scientist with quite possibly the LEAST Chinese name ever) to help Stark build a weapon for him. Instead, Stark and Yinsen worked on a suit, managing to finish the chest piece just as the shrapnel began damaging Stark's heart. Yinsen attempted to stall Wong-Chu until the suit could power Stark's heart. After Yinsen died, Stark proceeded to demolish the compound and make a mockery out of Wong-Chu. Aside from the location of the story, the biggest difference between the comic and MCU is that comic Stark's heart was physically damaged and will give out if he goes for too long without his suit, whereas the MCU Stark's heart was _merely_ in danger of being damaged from the shrapnel.
Thank you for the awesome information. Too many people are jerks and act like somehow everyone should know that. It's fun having inside info though. I'm more of a fiction novel guy, and sometimes (NOT OFTEN) the movies are better. Peter Benchley's Jaws was a mess, for instance. Hooper was banging Chief Brody's wife. And Stephen King's it.... no way. The kids had something that rhymed with Georgie in the sewer. King was definitely coked up writing that one.
They reproduced the main elements of the origin story quite well. Note that the suits matched the evolution of the Iron Man suit in the comics as well. The original clunky grey suit, the improved gold suit, then finally the iconic red & gold suit.
“I am Iron Man” in the end credits scene was improvised. Originally Robert was supposed to stick to the cards. Robert felt his character would be more honest with the people at the end. It is the reason why most of the Marvel Superheroes don’t have secret Identities. Only a few do like Daredevil, and Spider-Man.
Also Tony is a narcissist. It's more honest to his character that he wants the attention. I agree with those that RDJ is uniquely qualified to play Tony Stark; he actually went through a similar playboy/party boy conversion experience.
Spider-man: "I need to keep my identity a secret to protect the ones I love!" Iron Man: "F*ck that, I got no loved ones and love the spotlight!" Honestly, when Iron Man came out, there were other superhero movies like Spider-man (secret identity), Batman (secret identity), Superman (secret identity), and the X-men (somewhat secret identity and codenames). So this was a breath of fresh air.
Ironman 1 will forever be one of my favorite movies in the franchise, just so many creativity it had, with Robert's performance and how satisfying the suit ups were.
This movie introduced me to Marvel. I knew the comics existed but I had never even picked one up before and glanced at it. So understandably it was a little weird to me that iron man was the movie they made. Because I knew of his existence but knew nothing about his story. As far as I knew the most popular Marvel characters were Hulk and Captain America. I didn't even know X-Men were part of Marvel.
@@renegato0789 I get your opinion of Ragnarok is just that.... an opinion.... And you are certainly entitled to it. But I gotta be honest. That's a pretty dumb opinion. Ragnarok was the only good Thor movie and without question one of the top 5 best in the MCU. OK it actually might have dropped down to the 6th best, Since spider man no way home came out.
Don't listen to that. Even if it's not what he meant. We all know that if anybody could come up with a way to actually make himself live 50 lifetimes, it would be Tony Stark. It isn't that you misunderstood what he said. You simply have complete confidence in Tony's abilities lol.
That whole "run his heart" premise always tickled/annoyed me. The arc reactor doesn't run his heart. It powers an electro-magnet that keeps shrapnel from entering his heart. He could do that with a couple of 9v batteries. Talk about overkill. Anyway, over the course of the film they build it into something it isn't. They want you to believe the arc reactor keeps him alive instead of a simple magnet. Then on the other hand, when Tony built the mini arc reactor he had more in mind than just powering the magnet.
@@lakeracer8453 I think that was the point of the line. Pointing out that it could run his heart for 50 lifetimes, but instead he was just using it to keep simple shrapnel out of his heart, following with, "Or something big for 5 minutes" foreshadowing he had a better plan for the arch reactor's energy output.
The Terrance Howard thing: Howard was the single most bankable actor in the flick, and was paid accordingly (Between $3.5 and $4.5 million), while Downey Junior, who hadn't been successful for a long time) was paid a fraction of Howard (by some reports $500k) The Movie was a massive success, and Downey Junior's payday went way, way up (reportedly to $10 million). The Accountants went over the projected costs for Iron Man 2 and said 'something's got to go', so it was explained to Howard that (a he wasn't the star and (b he was taking a pay cut. (Reports vary but $500 k is a common claim) Howard said nope, and walked. Don Cheadle had no problem with the pay scale which lead to 6 movies and a TV series.
@@melodramatic7904 and confirmed by no one else. Seriously he made serious bank for a movie he was barely in and turned his nose up for $.5 million for a move he also would have barely been in. Howard pissed away being in a major franchise for ego.
Yeah, that's what made Phases 1 & 2 so good. Their movies were movies FIRST; before just being a stepping stone to the NEXT movie in line. Now it's like whatever movie or show we're watching doesn't matter because it's just there to stet up the NEXT thing. Which ultimately, is itself, another set up for the next thing.
@@patrickcromwell7554 I'd disagree. Some were little more than setup for the next, but Falcon and Winter Soldier? Wandavision? Loki? Hawkeye? While they may have been setting up future plotlines, they also could stand as good shows continuing the work for the characters. The DCEU is the real culprit of rushing to set up a universe.
@@bthsr7113 Loki was just setting up its own second season with Kang the conqueror. Wandavision was setting up Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Falcon and Winter Soldier COULD stand alone BUT it's setting up Falcon as the new Captain America. And Hawkeye is setting up Whisper. Phase 4 was done just to set up phases 6&7. Even phase 5 looks half assed.
@@Snow_Weaver Yeah, I agree. I get that establishing franchises should have occasional overlapping, but making an entire solo movie just to set up an ensemble movie is going a bit far. Also I think directors should pool their resources and create their own film studio so that big execs who have no clue, can't interfere in the creative aspect. I mean one director may not have the capital, but six pooling their resources??? That could get things done.
I remember watching X-Men in 2000. That movie captured my imagination. I wondered if Marvel could pull it off with other properties. Between 2000 and 2008, we didn't have an MCU, but we had so many Marvel movies. The Spider-Man (Raimi) trilogy, Ang Lee's Lee's Hulk, Daredevil, Fantastic 4, The Punisher. Some were hit and some were a miss, so Iron Man wasn't expected to be a sure thing. But the movie was better than many expected, and Robert Downey Jr completely nailed this part. The movie is one of Marvel's best, out of MCU or non MCU Marvel movies. It's easy to dismiss after so much that's come after, but if not for the success of this movie, there would be no MCU.
@@richlisola1 It didn’t do better because anyone with filmmaking knowledge knows the movie is below average so I am glad it’s rated bad and seeing as one of the worse comic book movies. The movie doesn’t have good acting, the cinematography is non existent, the editing is HORRIBLE with all the bs they tried to do to make it cool and made it worse, the storytelling was bad and the writing. It’s such a bad movie, 4/10 being generous.
Oof, Daredevil. My main memory connected to that film was that I was in high school, my niece was having her fifth birthday party at Chuck E Cheese, and my friends rescued me... to go see Daredevil. I think that's about the only alternative out there that made Daredevil the better choice. lol

I saw this in the theatres and when he first got suited it was just so much fun. The entire theatre was so hyped. That was one of my favourite moments. Plus the “I am Iron Man” line. Just so exciting
This movie is a master piece. It came out during a time when comics were not as main stream as they are now. When we saw nick fury showed up at the end, everyone almost shit them self. Cameos like that were unheard of back then. Good reaction.
What I really like about this movie, was the time taken to show the hard work Tony had to put into developing the Iron Man tech. Too often, that gets glossed over or omitted completely in other franchises.
9:47 "What really happened to him in the comics?" I can confirm, this movie was spot-on with what happened in the comics. He wasn't attacked like in the movie. He walked over a trip-wire. But the result was shrapnel slowly making its way towards his heart, and while in captivity, he worked with Yinsen (yes, even Yinsen was from the comics) to create a device that would keep the shrapnel out of his heart. The biggest difference is that in the original comics, Tony wore the whole Iron Man chestplate underneath his clothes to power his heart, and needed to plug it in to recharge it, while in the movie he had a small Arc reactor that didn't need to be recharged.
@@badplay156 Yeah. There are differences, so I don't know why I said, "spot-on". It created a more modernized version of the original story. But in terms of what exactly happened to Tony's heart, what the device powering his heart was, and who he built the armor with, the movie was surprisingly accurate.
Yeah, Iron Man for me will always be top tier MCU film. This film is special because it’s not trying to be part of a bigger cinematic. It’s just focused on being a character-driven blockbuster with a superhero majority of audiences didn’t know about. Back in 2008, this was a top tier blockbuster film (in a summer filled with incredible films like The Dark Knight and Wall-e) and it just feels more innocent and less corporatized than current or recent MCU films.
This was a holy shit moment in 2008. I saw Iron Man in the theater, because I was a big fan of Favreau, and wanted to see what he could do with a superhero, and because RDJ was such obviously perfect (if extremely risky) casting. So I was expecting a good movie, but I was SHOCKED by how good it was, and went back to see it again the following weekend. It was so far beyond what had been done with Marvel properties, by various studios, up to that point. It was the first superhero movie since Batman Begins to really set itself apart from what had come before, and carve out its own distinct identity, which would ultimately become the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But right from the start of that massive franchise, with this movie, they set their own standard. And they did it with Iron Man...who was not, hard as it is to believe now, a top tier Marvel character at the time. The movie MADE Iron Man a top tier Marvel character. Just by doing justice to the comics, even if the comics didn't sell as many issues as X-Men or Spider-Man. They made a movie that longtime Iron Man fans could love, but more significantly, they made a movie that created a generation of new fans who think of Iron Man almost instantaneously, when they think of Marvel. This movie changed the whole game.
Iron Man wasn't simply 'not a top tier Marvel character'. He was B-List at bed and was the victim of a character massacre due to being the effective villain of the Civil War arc (despite the writers (I believe) claiming his side were ment to be the good side. The people who wanted to put prisoners in a hell dimension. A later comic arc, World War Hulk, probably sold in part based on Karmic Retribution to him and a few others involved). That the movie not only succeeded but made Iron Man a household name is a miracle.
I think for me, his character development over the entire 3 phases is amazing. Besides that, i think it was so poetic that he ends this with "I am Ironman" and that's also his last words when he beats Thanos. One was for ego, one was because he died a hero. so beautiful :)
The song about not being able to concentrate is Institutionalized by Suicidal Tendencies, it's famous for the line; "And I go 'Mom, why don't you just give me a Pepsi?' And she goes 'No, you're on drugs!' And I go ' No mom, I'm okay, I'm just thinking.' And she goes 'No, you're on drugs, normal people don't act that way', And I go 'Mom, just give me a Pepsi, Please!' But she wouldn't give it to me. All I wanted was a Pepsi but she wouldn't give it to me. JUST A PEPSI!" Go listen to it, with lyrics, it was relatable by everyone who hears it.
The nice thing about this movie is that it feels like an okay stand-alone movie. It feels like it was made without the intention of being an introduction movie to jumpstart a trilogy and cinematic universe. Some book-turned-movies that tried to start a trilogy had sucky introduction movies and even leave on cliffhangers with unanswered questions. Introduction movies tend to be lacking cause it chops up the source material, rushes to action parts/ undeserved bad-assery, and cut out the mundane things that aren't as interesting as explosions but makes the viewer/reader actually care by the climax. Not to mention they pander to original audiences while flipping them off and making it hard for their trilogy to gain enough interest with newer ppl because they made a boring/ bad movie. I think some movies should be remade or at least given tv shows since the 1st attempts weren't well recieved. But some tv shows get the rush storyline treatment too like The Charmed Reboot and Shadow Hunters. Tony Stark has the benefit of being an egotistical, larger-than-life personality that offsets some screen writers constant need to cut out character establishment/ development. It helps that his personality/ character shines thru during the action scenes in a way that is very Marvel.
With how risky Disney felt this movie was, and how unknown Iron Man was, Favreau was probably thinking this could possibly be a one-shot deal so he made it with no reservations for a sequel, aside from the stinger at the end. imo at least
You commented about the soundtrack. The guitar in the soundtrack, such as when he’s flying, is played by Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, who is also the first guy that Ironman hits in that cave. Also the sound of the mask being hammered is the sound in the end credit of Endgame. (Not sure if that was just in theaters)
As a long time comics fan, I always point out that at the time this movie came out, Iron Man was not an A-list character. Tony Stark was at times incredibly bland, and at best a B-tier hero in the Marvel Universe. This was the main reason that they basically were able to build this movie however they wanted to, and because of that, I was blown away with the amount of development and world-building they did with Stark as a character. I remember seeing the montage at the awards ceremony in the beginning and having chills, because they had finally made the character feel real. This movie was world-changing in more ways than one, because RDJ's portrayal of Stark was so popular and amazing that Marvel Comics basically redesigned Tony in the comics to be more like him, and bumped Iron Man into the A-list of heroes.
"They gonna call him Titanium Man? That just sounds stupid." Titanium Man is the codename for several Soviet Russian agents using similar but cruder power armor to Iron Man in the comics, and almost always his enemy.
So the song Tony was listening to while working on a car after working on the reporter is "Institutionalized" by the punk band "Suicidal Tendencies". It's pretty famous for the chorus, and is about mental illness and who gets to define it. Yinsen is literally a surgeon - that's how he knew what to do. And the reason they did Iron Man first is because the classic flagships (Fantastic Four, X-Men, Spider-Man, even Captain America) had been done before with...varied results.
Man, I remember seeing this film when it came out. I was 9 years old then Dark Knight came out later on. This film was RDJ comeback. This film is really accurate to the comics
I think why this movie is so popular is mostly because when it came out. When it come out, there were no expectations, no leaks, no pre-existing story line to tie in yet. Just a origin story that had blew away everyone away without even realizing what it started
This movie still holds up to this day. It's still a top 3 MCU film for me. Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones) did the score, and it's fucking perfect. He killed it. One of the best scores for any Marvel film ever in my opinion.
Honestly the reason I enjoy this movie is how well developed this is as an origin. The evolution, the character growth, the rather obvious twist, it's good popcorn munching fun while still being a fully satisfying film and a great jumping point for the entire MCU.
Iron Man ranks in the top three or four MCU films. This movie is timeless, it always gets me feeling happy. :) I'm honestly SURPRISED that you haven't watched this. I always figure that every MCU fan has watched them all, like I have but I guess that's a bit unfair and unrealistic. Either way, very much enjoyed watching this on here. :)
The best thing about the movie was the brightness and light. The evil or heroism happens under the sun, no brooding and darkness and shadows and hiding or atmosphere.
Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski), is the son of Lloyd Bridges (the guy in "Airplane" who picked the wrong day to quit drinking, smoking, sniffing glue, ect.....)
Fun fact: Robert was always hiding snacks around the place and eating so the integrated that into Tony stark, so yes u could say Robert is Tony but Tony is Robert too
My reason for loving this film so much os that it set a whole new tone for the superhero film genre. Before this, we had alot of campey films. Good, but campy. Iron-Man felt very realistic in its design.
I am shocked that you thought it would be boring. This is one of the best superhero origin movies. I love your editing using some other clips to fit with your commentary.
The song used at the end credits is titled "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath. This song has nothing to do with Marvel's Iron Man, but it was a very fitting song for Iron Man. Throughout the MCU, Tony Stark is often seen wearing a Black Sabbath shirt in reference to this. This was the same song used in the trailer with the song's opening line "I am Iron Man" prominently used. Moreover, what made Iron Man so different from other superhero movies prior was that traditionally Iron Man always had a secret identity in the comics, so most viewers were taken aback by the reveal at the end.
I guess if you cherrypick the lyrics it kinda fits but other than having badass riffs and the name Iron man, it doesn't work at all. It's more fitting for a villan with a tragic backstory. Here are some of the lyrics... He was turned to steel In the great magnetic field When he traveled time For the future of mankind Nobody wants him He just stares at the world Planning his vengeance That he will soon unfurl Now the time is here For Iron Man to spread fear Vengeance from the grave Kills the people he once saved Nobody wants him They just turn their heads Nobody helps him Now he has his revenge Heavy boots of lead Fills his victims full of dread Running as fast as they can Iron Man lives again
thing in this movie a lot of people tend to miss, the town that was under attack that basically serves as Iron Man's debut was the town that Yensin was from, it gave Tony a personal stake in the mission being the home of the man who saved his life.
The parallels of the two are crazy! In the comics Tony was an self abusive alcoholic, and implied drug addict, Robert Downey was in real life. Watch Elton John's video I Want Love it was his first job after rehab
It makes me chuckle to know that the whole Burger King thing wasn't just corporate product placement, because *I* always get a craving for a Whopper whenever I watch this movie.
as far as comic origin story adaptations, this movie did pretty good. The original iron man origin story went pretty much like this except it was set in Vietnam, the change to the middle east was for pretty obvious reasons but it also helped keep the story tones and notes consistent so i'm very on board for it
Cool fact: the soldier that turns around and gets punched by Tony in the first suit, is Tom Morello. Guitarist for Rage Against The Machine, who also played guitar for a lot of the soundtrack
I'm 68 years old, and have an older brother- I'd been reading IronMan from day one. The first half of the movie is almost word for word of the original more than 50 years ago- except then the villains were Vietcong. And just a coincidence, but a delightful one- RDJ looks EXACTLY like the comic book Tony Stark, from before he was even born
In the comics, if I recall properly Stark was a Sergeant in the Army, deployed to Vietnam. Took a bladt from a grenade and shrapnel entered his chest. So, the magnet to keep it from creeping inward to his heart. He built Stark Industries on his discharge from the Army, and created Iron Man some time into his wealth-building. No son of privilege, no inherited wealth. The movies chose a retcon to create a redemption arc for Stark and make Stane more integral to the story.
In concept, he was meant to be the type of character his writers personally hated... but given a story that got you to feel sympathy for him despite that.
There is just something so stripped down about this, the first MCU movie. It's kind of refreshing from the sensory overload that a lot of the later movies would have.
Mayne, I saw this movie with my pops in theaters back in 08', and because of that mayne I have such an attachment to these early Marvel films mayne. Such an iconic beginning to the greatest crossover event in cinema history mayne.
Lmao when man's put himself in the audience at 19:05 I was laughing too hard :-D doin too much but keep on doin it, that's what makes these reactions different them little touches nobody else thinks about
This is the movie that gave birth to the MCU. Crazy fact, there wasn't really a script and much of the dialog was adlibbed. The actors and director literally carried this movie.
@@schicoj0179 Blade is not part of the MCU. While it is true that the success of Blade helped pave the way for the MCU, they are not in the same universe. Ironman was the first MCU film.
The shrapnel in Tony's heart was pretty much the same from the original... the only thing changing was modernizing the era in US history that this took place in.
can’t wait for you to reacts to 2 & 3, Robert Downey Jr. did an amazing job portraying iron man. To me iron man is the best superhero in the MCU and my favorite
It was Paramount that didn't want RDJ. Though, in fairness to them, no other studio would've wanted to bankroll him in a movie with that kind of budget, either. But Disney didn't have Marvel yet, so they weren't really in the picture.
Terrance Howard had recently been nominated for awards when they approached him for Iron Man. He signed for two movies a big payday for movie 1 and a even bigger payday for movie 2 (if it got made). Then they signed Robert Downey Jr for a small amount (Robert Downey Jr had recently had some problems with drug addiction and had just finished rehab and studios were afraid to use him so Marvel got him for a bargain). Iron Man was a big success. When they started doing Iron Man 2, they gave Robert Downey Jr a huge raise ( a huge raise for Iron Man 2, but also an overall deal to appear in a certain number of upcoming Marvel movies, like Avengers). Terrance Howard is rumored to be difficult to work with so Marvel wanted to make his role smaller in Iron Man 2 (and thus pay him less money). Terrance Howard made a big deal about that he already had signed a contract for Iron Man 2 for a certain amount. They settled and the character Rhodey was recast for Iron Man 2 with Don Cheadle (who also signed a multi picture deal for a number of upcoming Marvel movies).
I don't think it's rumors about Terence Howard. Man is insane. He recently claimed that math is a tool of the white man and that white people are lying to black people on how to add numbers together and convinced some African country to sponsor him and his new "Black Math" to turn it into Wakanda. He's not very intelligent or mentally stable. But, he is a consummate bullshit artist for not so bright people.
Also the place, Golmira (that could be spelled wrong) was the place where Yensen was from. It's just a peaceful little town and now his kidnappers are terrorising it. That adds a bit more fuel to his already heated feelings.
Neat fact - the reason Samuel Jackson is Nick Fury is really simple - in Marvel Nick Fury literally WAS Samuel Jackson. The comic series The Ultimates and Ultimate X-Men the creators admitted their Nick Fury was Samuel Jackson. So when it came to casting the role, it was a really easy decision.
What i love about this movie is it came out in 2008. I was still in grade school and before this the only super hero movie I ever saw was spiderman. Compared to that this movie is amazing. Back then when this came out it shocked so many people. It laid the groundwork for super hero movies going mainstream.
The best things about this movie is "I am Iron Man" and the fact that 3 young men decided to be Iron Man for Halloween 2 years in a row! Matching costumes ages 23, 13 and 3..IT WAS FRICKING AWESOME as a Mom to see my boys together trick or treating in those costumes..and YES my neighbors were cool to have the older folks dress up for trick or treating..all thanks to this movie and the one.. The only.. The incomparable Robert Downey Jr!
Great video! No complaints here, but I just wanted to say a few things. Firstly, there wasn't an intentional plan to have a full fledged "MCU". They weren't sure if Iron Man would even be a success considering, at the time of the movie's inception, Iron Man comics weren't even the most popular so it was actually quite a risk to make a movie based solely off the character. Another thing is that Disney wasn't a part of the Marvel decision-making till the MCU had been well off the ground running. The only reason Disney wanted to have controlling interest is because Marvel had been having a successful run of films at the time they made the purchase. All in all, this is definitely one of my favorite movies since Iron Man has been one of my favorite characters growing up. I can remember watching the cartoons and being fascinated by all the different suits he has for different circumstances.
This movie came out when I was 15, I always loved superhero movies and was so excited for this. My dad always spoke about the Hulk being his favorite, but he said cartoons of Hulk, Iron Man, and Cap would comes on mornings (maybe weekends) when we was a kid. And he had comics growing up. RDJ’s acting and personality was so charming, Tony super charismatic, and I was digging the storytelling. Jon Favreau inspires me as a filmmaker. I instantly loved this film! Tony/Iron Man/RDJ was always my favorite ❤ his change of heart and his ending reveal, the origins of building the suit, the moments with Pepper.
When you put your head in the middle of the press and said "Can you not talk with your mouth full sir" had me dying. I stopped it just to tell you that it was awesome 👌 'My dad built this company, grow a hairline ' 😂
glad you're picking this up again! It's worth watching the D+ shows again after, or at least summaries. Surprised you could follow those shows without seeing the movies haha
What I love about it is that it took a comic book character that was well known but probably not at the top like Spiderman and the X-Men, and made his character one of the all time best, Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark, I’m happy for him that it revived his career after everything he went through, along with the fact that this one movie kicked off an entire shared universe
Yes, that’s a real song. The group is Suicidal Tendencies, the song is call Institutionalized. It’s about a guy that struggles to be understood and is put i to a mental institution. Great song actually, and ironic given the scene it’s in
What I liked it wasn't yet infected with Disney. It's a bit darker and more mature than say Avengers. Gradually Disney starting treating these things like cartoons. To me, this is why Ironman stands out as opposed to the garbage of now...like Loki, or Wandavision also the Eternal movie which was just atrocious!
@MelVerse, This movies is the SAME as the day it came out, nothing has been edited or updated (cgi, or songs) Its was great! glad you watched and enjoyed.
When this movie was made, there was no MCU. They had hopes of creating the universe, but it was also hinging on the success of this movie. The next movie in the line up was The Incredible Hulk. And it was very apparent that they didn’t have a clear vision of how they were going to create the universe we got.
i enjoy this movie, because they got it right. the character, the origin, everything. they didnt have to reinvent the wheel or go dark and gritty, it just works.
I love the soundtrack the editing the fierce look of Iron Man. He looks like a hero to be feared and respected. The movie almost makes it feel like this suit could be a real thing in the near future. Jon Favreau does a excellent job and bringing this character to life both with the CGI and the writing of Robert Jr. as you said he was meant for this role. For me it’s a toss up between best origin of Iron Man or Captain America. Iron man was my favorite. But Cap won the battle to my heart after his origin movie. I just relate so much more personality wise to Cap.
Honestly I love this movie because I didn’t think it would be good. It’s the first superhero movie I saw with a character I never heard of and staring an actor that I never heard of too. And it was incredible.
The reason I love this movie so much.... Loaded question, but I remember watching it the first time thinking that this may actually be possible. So to combine superhero films with what is possible was very cool to me

Reason the burger tasted bad was because of the drugs, he quit drugs because he realized he couldn’t even enjoy a simple burger.
Nah, the burger tasted bad just because burger king is disgusting
@@PilloTheStar no it isn't.... It's just disgusting to you but it's not to others... While I do agree you can make a better burger at home... Their's isn't complete trash
@@_TripleChanger-Achilles_ And it is definitely true that certain drugs - and the abuse of them - will deaden things like smell and taste.
@@PilloTheStar others replied, but it was RDJ that said it was the drugs that made it taste bad and that was the point BK saved his life. They didn't sponsor the movie at ask, but Downey insisted on them being there.
I don't think anybody could have pulled off Tony Stark the way Robert Downey Jr did.
You’re right RDJ is iron man
@Alyssa Barrett
Yep, the role and he are one.
Tony Stark's character arc mirrors RDJ's real life arc. He was made for the role.
@Dr. Burt Gummerfan totally agree No one else could play Iron Man
@darth ken81 Yes he was made for this.
Fun fact: Tony eating cheese burgers is
actually a call back to one of Robert Downy Jr's road to rehab. When he was younger in his acting career, Robert got into a lot of drugs and went to a pretty dark place. One time he went to Burger King and said that the burger was so disgusting, it actually gave him a moment of clarity. In that
moment he decided to clean himself up.
We've lost so many truly talented people to drug addictions, I was thrilled to see RDJ turn his life around.
nice copypaste though, like I haven't seen the exact same fun fact word to word 10 times already...
I like that they did the buildup to Tony's official suit. Too many shows and movies nowadays rush through that to them being proficient at what they are.. It helps humanize them to show they worked hard to get where they are..
Agreed, and then get to see the suits progress as he progresses throughout the MCU is amazing

Exactly, it’s one of the reasons the raimi Spider-Man was bad. His development sucked
"What really happened to him in the comics?"
I scrolled down for a while and didn't see anyone answer the question.

The majority of the movie was improvised. They only had an outline to work with, not a full script.
MCU is shit
Spider-man: "I need to keep my identity a secret to protect the ones I love!"
Iron Man: "F*ck that, I got no loved ones and love the spotlight!"
Honestly, when Iron Man came out, there were other superhero movies like Spider-man (secret identity), Batman (secret identity), Superman (secret identity), and the X-men (somewhat secret identity and codenames). So this was a breath of fresh air.
Until.... Far from home ending credits😂
Ironman 1 will forever be one of my favorite movies in the franchise, just so many creativity it had, with Robert's performance and how satisfying the suit ups were.
Beyond that even, this movie put RDJ back on the map. He embodies the role and I can't imagine the film without him.
Blade is still my favorite pre-MCU film. Iron Man I was my favorite MCU film.

Running his heart for 50 lifetimes does not mean the character could live that long. It was literally just the amount of time the reactor could run.
guaranteed his liver wouldn't last that long
Chill out fam it’s a movie 😂😂
The Terrance Howard thing: Howard was the single most bankable actor in the flick, and was paid accordingly (Between $3.5 and $4.5 million), while Downey Junior, who hadn't been successful for a long time) was paid a fraction of Howard (by some reports $500k)
The Movie was a massive success, and Downey Junior's payday went way, way up (reportedly to $10 million). I love the fact that this movie isn’t trying to noticeably set the MCU up. It’s just a good movie.
Wish they would get back to just making good movies. not everything needs to be tied together / set ups.

What I really like about this movie, was the time taken to show the hard work Tony had to put into developing the Iron Man tech. Too often, that gets glossed over or omitted completely in other franchises.
Still a top ten MCU film! The backbone for modern superhero movies.
9:47 "What really happened to him in the comics?"
I can confirm, this movie was spot-on with what happened in the comics.
The setting was different in the comics. It was probably Viet Nam but I don't remember if it was actually stated
The song about not being able to concentrate is Institutionalized by Suicidal Tendencies, it's famous for the line;
"And I go 'Mom, why don't you just give me a Pepsi?' And she goes 'No, you're on drugs!' And I go ' No mom, I'm okay, I'm just thinking.' And she goes 'No, you're on drugs, normal people don't act that way', And I go 'Mom, just give me a Pepsi, Please!' But she wouldn't give it to me. All I wanted was a Pepsi but she wouldn't give it to me. JUST A PEPSI!"
Go listen to it, with lyrics, it was relatable by everyone who hears it.
'Ti's but a scratch!'.

You saying "You can't even build a hairline" to the Iron Monger was absolutely hilarious.
My favorite part about this movie is how they showed Tony building the original suit in the cave.
With a box of scraps!
That just sounds a lot like Crimson Dynamo (KGB agent in a iron man like armor made by Soviet scientists)
Actually, They used that name in one of the animated series - "Iron Man : Armored Adventures" (Which was actually pretty good).

Anyone else notice the blueprint for Caps shield on the table, when he was trying to take the suite off?
This movie still holds up to this day. It's still a top 3 MCU film for me. Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones) did the score, and it's fucking perfect. He killed it. One of the best scores for any Marvel film ever in my opinion.
I had no idea Ramin did the score!!!
Score, soundtrack.... perfection. Ozzie kicking in at the end had the whole theater grinning ear-to-ear.
Apparently, there were no stunt doublez needed for Iron Man; it wuz actually Robert Downey Jr. flying in the air himself.
The edits you do to make it look like you’re in the movie is hilarious man
I am shocked that you thought it would be boring.
Actually Tony showed a decided preference for AC/DC. 😏
I guess if you cherrypick the lyrics it kinda fits but other than having badass riffs and the name Iron man, it doesn't work at all.
It's more fitting for a villan with a tragic backstory. Here are some of the lyrics...
He was turned to steel
In the great magnetic field
When he traveled time
For the future of mankind
Nobody wants him
He just stares at the world
Planning his vengeance
That he will soon unfurl
Now the time is here
For Iron Man to spread fear
Vengeance from the grave
Kills the people he once saved
Nobody wants him
They just turn their heads
Nobody helps him
Now he has his revenge
Heavy boots of lead
Fills his victims full of dread
Running as fast as they can
Iron Man lives again
thing in this movie a lot of people tend to miss, the town that was under attack that basically serves as Iron Man's debut was the town that Yensin was from, it gave Tony a personal stake in the mission being the home of the man who saved his life.
The parallels of the two are crazy! In the comics Tony was an self abusive alcoholic, and implied drug addict, Robert Downey was in real life. Watch Elton John's video I Want Love it was his first job after rehab
Tony's character arc mirrors Downey's real life arc.
It makes me chuckle to know that the whole Burger King thing wasn't just corporate product placement, because *I* always get a craving for a Whopper whenever I watch this movie.
as far as comic origin story adaptations, this movie did pretty good. The original iron man origin story went pretty much like this except it was set in Vietnam, the change to the middle east was for pretty obvious reasons but it also helped keep the story tones and notes consistent so i'm very on board for it
I think that you are the first reactor who appreciates the instrumental score that enhances this movie.
When the robot uses the fire extinguisher on Tony, hahahahaha.
And just a coincidence, but a delightful one- RDJ looks EXACTLY like the comic book Tony Stark, from before he was even born
yooooo i never thought of Pepper's reaction to finding out Tony is Ironman in that way. Great analysis dude
All the millionaires and billionaires we have in the world, and STILL, no one became Batman or Iron Man ... (sigh.)
It's not the first , that would be blade.
@@deandresmith1515 Blade was the first successful Marvel adaptation movie, but it wasn't part of the MCU.
Technically it was Blade
@@schicoj0179 Blade is not part of the MCU. While it is true that the success of Blade helped pave the way for the MCU, they are not in the same universe. Ironman was the first MCU film.
Oh ok my bad thanks for the knowledge
The shrapnel in Tony's heart was pretty much the same from the original... the only thing changing was modernizing the era in US history that this took place in.
can’t wait for you to reacts to 2 & 3, Robert Downey Jr. did an amazing job portraying iron man. To me iron man is the best superhero in the MCU and my favorite
Like they say stark his the man you are and captain America is the man you want to be.
ALL I WANTED WAS A PEPSI! Song is Institutionalized by suicidal tendencies and the whole song is like that btw. also Kevlar not cavalier lol
truly
we need to get mr s. tendencies his pepsi
Good reaction dude. Really like this movie when it came out. Awesome soundtrack too.. Wish Jeff bridges was in more modern films. You rock Mel.
Yes @MellVerse .. It does look just like the set from Brothers.. LOVE that movie BTW.. Tobey Maguire acted his ass off! Thanks for that call back!
Robert Downey Jr, the visuals and the music are what I love about this film and all the Ironmans
When you put your head in the middle of the press and said "Can you not talk with your mouth full sir" had me dying. I stopped it just to tell you that it was awesome 👌 'My dad built this company, grow a hairline ' 😂
I love Iron Mayne!
I truly wonder how good it would have continued to be if Disney didn’t acquire the rights to this franchise. Iron man 1 was so good.
What do I love about this movie? Everything. Absolutely everything.
glad you're picking this up again!
Great song actually, and ironic given the scene it’s in
I am so hyped for these MCU uploads from you man!
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it in theaters because it was truly unlike any other superhero film or really anything I'd ever seen.
@MelVerse, This movies is the SAME as the day it came out, nothing has been edited or updated (cgi, or songs) Its was great! glad you watched and enjoyed.
Terrance Howard felt he should get the same payday that RDJ got which is of course insane.
When this movie was made, there was no MCU. They had hopes of creating the universe, but it was also hinging on the success of this movie.
The next movie in the line up was The Incredible Hulk. And it was very apparent that they didn’t have a clear vision of how they were going to create the universe we got.
I loved the reveal of the suit the most honestly. I love RDJ as an actor in general but seeing the evolution of the suits was so great
25:45
*"Robert Downey Jr. is getting claustrophobic in the suit, so he doesn't get into it anymore."*
Is that code for RDJ getting fat?
What makes this movie great is the best character development for Tony, sadly missed in later movies.
i enjoy this movie, because they got it right. the character, the origin, everything. they didnt have to reinvent the wheel or go dark and gritty, it just works.
40:20 mell you funny asf 😭
In the Ultimate Marvel Universe, Nick Fury's scars over his eye came from Wolverine.
The guy Jeff Bridges is yelling about him building this thing in a cave is Ralphie from Christmas Story
