What is kind of funny is that at the time maybe less than 1% of the swiss people interested in sailing could watch these series. It wasn't shown on any TV channel and probably not in the internet as well.
This was the year that hooked me on the ac, been hooked since, what a design disaster the 03 boat was, snackenberg was the designer i think and it had the infamous hula too, would of been interesting if they had reliability, ya think it would of been tested under the most extreme conditions
@@benisrood helen clarke gov sold kiwis down the river with rights in Aus , dumped NZs air strike wing and hamstrung the americas cup. Clarke was a disaster for NZ. NZ herald released a report by TNZ. It pointed to fractures in management , nobody had overall direction , NZ81 was a flawed design and testing was done way to late.Report said revolutionary designs like the hula took time and money to test which tnz did not have. Grant Dalton took over and dumping Barker after 2014 was needed. Tuke and Burling are amazing.
I remember nz raving on about there new design faster than a dolphin. Bla bla. Soon as i saw alingi with coutts butterworth i knew nz was fuckd....those 2 are the masters
Well you could say the same thing for a siking aircraft carrier costing 12 B$ with all their fighters and bombers on board in case one would eventually sink one day.
The problem wasn't so much that the NZ boat was slow, it was the fact that it wasn't seaworthy. It failed the basics. And that boom design...why? Why would you do that?
Fragmented team. No one reported to a single director. Tom Schnakenburg was thrown under the bus. Why the hula ??? TNZ didnt have the time to develope new design concepts. They were rushed.
@@santos.l.halper1999 The TNZ after guard on Alinghi would have been Coutts, Butterworth and Jones. Daubney and Fleury were in the middle of the boat and Phipps was on the bow.
I'm from NZ and it seemed to me like they left a metaphorically and nearly literally sinking ship. It seemed like Coutts & Butterworth wanted to take over, or arrange the take-over of management after Peter Blake, but were shut out. Clearly the management they ended up with didn't work.
These tactical battles were so absorbing, thank you for uploading. About time I would say!

I was on my boat watching this 20 odd years ago. Happy days.
God these stars are electric and the strategy throughout the race is captivating. MOOORRREEEE

The America's Cup back when it was actual sailing rather than the drag racing we have now.
Looks like the broken boom solved the water ingress problem, up until the head sail let go! NZL84 was a lemon!
That was NZL 82. NZL 84 was used in the 2007 AC and by comparison was lightning quick.
I didn’t expect The Americas cup to start like that
Team New Zealand out of the race
ETNZ had a bad wheel position. Dean really had to lean over because they had their wheel lower. I’m sure the load of the water affected the rig
Sailing is the most beautiful feeling i ever knew
We have come along way since 2003. 2021 the boats hardly touched the water
I remember nz raving on about there new design faster than a dolphin. Bla bla. Soon as i saw alingi with coutts butterworth i knew nz was fuckd....those 2 are the masters
A million dollar plus boat and they need a plastic bucket from Bunnings to keep it from sinking
Well you could say the same thing for a siking aircraft carrier costing 12 B$ with all their fighters and bombers on board in case one would eventually sink one day.
And the Blue Bucket award goes to..... TNZ !!!
Don’t give team New Zealand an award for the bucket
the race the dream died again so painful watching the problems again
Wow!

Por una Europa con propósitos👏👏👏👏
Since team New Zealand took on a lot water Americas cup yachts are not bathtubs ponds or swimming pools
Dean Barker and technical issues in Americas Cups.
rough stuff thats for sure. nasty!
Worst AC boat ever?
Can we bury the foils and go back to this?
this level of tension canot be replicated by AC75s
Im not a fan of the modern sailing. Prefer them in the water like this feeling the waves. Its basically f1 and cycling on water these days
If Coutts hadn't left NZ for the big $$$, probably would have been another win. NZ is the most dominant team in the last 25 years.
I think losing Butterworth to Alinghi was the key to their win
Mark Andrew the whole after guard more like it.
@@santos.l.halper1999 The TNZ after guard on Alinghi would have been Coutts, Butterworth and Jones. Daubney and Fleury were in the middle of the boat and Phipps was on the bow.
Mark Andrew Yes. I'd hope that most people here would know that. Congrats for you...

When they still used boats.
Deans sailing position pains me. Leaning over so bad.
The boat was a dog
How can you design such a massive balm and concentrate all the effort on a little empty carbon tube ... it's just ridiculous ...
L Italia contri i Kiwi acchiappa certo!
18:07 :D sheeet
being beaten by team/nation witch doesn't even has access to an ocean...lol
Tbh, alinghe was the Kiwi all star team that left for better pay. You basically had two kiwi teams here.
