For the past thirty or so years, with the exception of the 1988 match, the pattern has seemed to be triads of Win-Defend-Lose. Whether it will hold true in the future, nobody knows.
It turned out that in the quest to save weight, the designers used aluminium instead of the usual Titanium for the cap shrouds. The boat was NOT a dog. It was probably as fast as Alinghi but the lack of design and management proficiency is palpable. Cookson the builder said he was not happy with the scantlings but he was told to go ahead. Apparently it's amazing the boat hull didn't break.
this was the most uninspiring AC in awhile. after watching the tech in the previous cup, huge foiling cats with monstrous speeds followed up by boats snapping masts in sea states that aren't that bad. boats filling with water while heeling with no way to extricate the water.
Looks like the gib put pressure on the top of the mast causing strain on the weakest point as they hit 2 big waves in a row..Kiwi ingenuity is what we do.This time we didn't pull it off. Were looking good in the 2021 mono hull foiling yachts.Looks like Emirates N.Z will be facing Prada Pirelli.
No..it wasn't gib pressure.just 2 massive waves put pressure on the mast.pretty sad we used a mast untested in these conditions.Schnackenberger was never involved again..I've never been a fan of Dean Barker.Hes not mentally strong enough.Hes an extremely good sailor but not in America's cup racing.Wasnt it Coutts and Butterworth who gave him the helm in the previous America's cup on the last race..which Russell and Brad won and put Barker at the helm for the last win. They put him there and then left together for Alinghi..
A major reason they left seems to be because they wanted to take over the management for the following cup, I'd imagine it would've gone better if they had let them. As it turns out they left a metaphorically and very nearly literally sinking ship. I can remember the single race Barker skippered had a closer finish than all the other races, though that's fair enough for his first race.
Not very relevant in this case though, as one of the sailors exclaimed after the mast broke the boat was a " f***ing piece of s*** " Breakage after breakage, and taking on water. The only 2 races without a breakage were very close, 7 and 23 seconds. Barker really doesn't seem to suit the Americas Cup though, I found it strange when the Americans hired him this time.
@@DoubleMonoLR - This is when Leadership comes to the fore & who was in charge. Not Schnackenberger. Not Barker. Just run by a committee and the out come is a headless campaign. When the other guy was an apprentice to Sir Peter Blake who was a skipper that was exceptional the best. Who would build it finance it sail & skipper it and brings home the bacon.- same as Grant Dalton & Coutts. But it takes years of highs & lows. which Barkers time has runout. - 23 seconds is not close in the 12metre class. or any class. There is No second.- lol
And had to agree with my friend John mcbeth they hit 2 waves and the mast has collapsed caterstrophic for team nz and they were out of the race and that’s a lot damage to that side of the boat
Interesting fact, the last 3 Cup winners all had disastrous results in their second defence.

The swearing from 55:15 says it all.
They were so furious
What a debacle.
A green bucket for this race.

Do we know what boat caused the wash?
Just curious. Which boat was faster? SUI 64 or SUI 75?

It would have been great to see a tacking duel during that squall.
Kiwi Skipper V kiwi skipper & Dean Barker lost again,!!!

We are winners now Alignhi don’t even feature all history
Can you afford host the americas cup?
One day you will be history as well. Try to be modest like many of the Kiwis I know.
Disaster
Had to agree with glen sowry just disaster for team nz
And had to agree with my friend John mcbeth they hit 2 waves and the mast has collapsed caterstrophic for team nz and they were out of the race and that’s a lot damage to that side of the boat
