NZ ass-whipping ,the first loss..for Dean Barker, in AC.
& he never won again,!! Every thing was wrong in TNZ that campaign.
includes poor boat design & engineering,
3-0
The boat design was fine, reliability was the issue. The boat itself was proven to be very fast once reliability issues were resolved. In the lead up to the next event this boat won the plelimnary races. Team NZ was left in a shambles when the core of the team left with Coutts. Why did he leave? Because he personally wanted more control of the event, he did the same thing later on with Alinghi.
It’s really a shame because I don’t think Barker is really that bad-- in the race-by-race rankings I think he’s won 11 AC final *races*, which would be just behind Coutts and Spithill with 14 and Conner with 13, but it’s shaken out that only one of those races was actually enough to deliver victory in the MATCH overall.
If fate had been kinder to him and the 2000 team had stated together longer, he could have had a much happier time of it building the “25 year dynasty” as a star for a few editions before becoming a mentor to the current Team NZ generation.
But, sadly, that’s not the timeline we live in...
and still
@@slooob23 Wasn't just Coutts. There were others who had issues with the then TNZ management/Trustees and where the money has gone.
Thank you for making this available..
As a one-design sailor, this is a great teaching moment for our crew..
Thanks again...
This is match racing, not the AC75 of today. But I expect more for the sailor,to watch than the non sailor.
I'm not a sailor, and I also far preferred these matches. Different crew doing different things(not twiddling a controller), different sails, tactics, sailing in choppy weather, significant difference upwind vs downwind, shadowing the lead boat with the spinnaker, surfing along waves, etc.
The current events are overwhelmingly boring, and the graphics are weirdly often terrible, they make it difficult to tell which direction the wind is coming from, relative positions, etc. Back in the 90s the 3d graphics gave better information.
It's a bit like rally driving vs F1, sure F1 is faster but it's generally very predictable.
This is so much better than the drag races they have now.
No it isn't grandpa.
Oh yes it is, son.@@rcpmac
So different. Love them both 😊
This is what racing is all about. I miss these tacking duels. Thanks for posting these videos.
That's what you call a good old fashioned drubbing.
Again Barkers position is awful. The leaning over to drive vs Alinghi and Russels position is so different. Who wants to lean over like that driving for a few hours.
Alinghi kite projects in the vertical plane to about half way between the bottom spreaders and the deck.... the kiwi kite nowhere near as low, hence less area hence less projected area hence less speed...simple
What line is Brad Butterworth always have in his hands? He is looking aft, so what is he controlling? I love watching these real racing times.
My GUESS is some sort of running backstay.
I better get to Barcelona in October.
Barker was finished in 2003, something is really wrong in his character hence today it shows in2021
To be fair, basically every America's Cup ever has been won by the fastest boat(regardless of crew), something which is conveniently ignored in the coverage/marketing of the cup.
Do you also have footage of the older races?
These are horrible boats. A made up class. The bows on these boats are just ugly rule cheats that don't work well. The Rules for these boats never really worked anyway. They are much better than the increasingly horrible and silly made up classes that have followed. Meanwhile the J's are still racing as are also the Twelve meters. Both are real classes that exist and don't need the Americas Cup.
Your theory holds no water. SUI 100 was a master piece of the rules. The J's are still here because they are antique classics. The 12's because they are Greta boats that can do charter and work with less crew. These boats served a purpose and this raci g crushes the new foil boats.
Will you be showing the 32/33 and so on?
Working on it.
America's Cup Thanks a lot. Good work. I will be waiting
Most iconic ac boats
Can't wait for Dean Barker to finally win the Cup for American Magic in 2021 and return the Cup to its rightful resting place in the New York Yacht Club. Oh the irony of it all.
2025 perhaps
