What a great memory - I was there on the water every Friday and Sat watching the racing on Apollo the Photographers boat and I was there on the Windward Mark when AUS- 34 broke and sank. We knew since late January that NZL-38 was 5 minutes faster around the course than the Defenders. I have a great picture of NZ-38 sailing home after one race.
Another one of those marvellous Historic Events that won the Hearts of all NewZealanders around this wonderful place we call Home Planet Earth Sir Peter Blake thank you for creating wonderful memories of these two wonderful ladies of the sea's, Black Magic & Kiwi engenuity. R.I.P. Kiwi.
I can’t remember the sequence, but during the America’s cup, the Whitbread around the world race had Andy Dalton coming into the Viaduct to a huge reception. Memorable times!!❤️❤️
Made me tear up a bit to see Sir Peter Blake, he fundraised for my mum to have a trailer to store lifejackets and an inflatable boat to teach kids how to survive out in the ocean. A truly good guy - just wanting to see kids enjoy life and doing as much as he could for all, he gave his life selflessly to others - to the very end. Such people are rare gems.
Dennis Connor was heard saying when he and some others were passing the Kiwi compound and the mast of NZL32 could be seen "That mast is their secret to their speed "
What a trip down memory lane.1995. 2nd year of Auckland uni. Too caught up drinking beer and chasing girls to give a shit about the racing, despite being a sailor since the age of 10. Went to the parade though. Magic.
Great documentary looking back at the 1995 epic racing. Even though everything is apparently finally sorted out for 2021, every time Dalton opens his mouth I dread what he'll come out with and scupper everything, he had to be gagged in Bermuda and it worked!!
@weatheranddarkness those Australians were very impressive, they were the 1st to take it from us. Nobody thought it could be done until they proved us wrong. Aussies & U.S.A are sporting super powers.
That was a crazy year. Dennis Connor on Stars & Stripes came back from trailing by 10 minutes on the last leg to beat the all woman team on America3 to win the defender series. Then Connor used the Young America boat (the mermaid), which was eliminated earlier in the series, to defend the cup. I actually wondered why he didn't use the America3 boat. Don't know if it would have mattered. Black Magic was fast as shit.
@john broad that may be true of some skippers, especially in the modern age but not Blake. He was largely true to his beliefs. I knew him quite well so I must be a little over five..... Jeez......
I recon there are a lot of similarities between this campaign and the current one. Except for the red socks... Seeing something like that would be great! Go team New Zealand!
At some time in the near future, one has to réalisé that the America’s Cup has become a theme park event and it is more about making money than actual sailing .
@@Sportsfan1042 Still a Theme Park event, should have been sailed in Auckland - I watched every Race from Day, 1 including the Youth Americas Cup and Woman America Cup and today, One needs something todo while waiting for the world to build, even today we could only start one race.
Fu un edizione di Coppa America meravigliosa, un equipaggio fatto da colossi della velamondiale, Se non erro uno dei progettisti era il grande Daug Peterson?
Ironic then the phrase "it would be a bad one to loose" when taking about the last race would dramatically come back to haunt etnz massively a few years later when on match point they went on to loose . Very painful to watch

What an exceptional story to be told and retold. Remember it like yesterday. Marvelous.

I worked at Donaghy's industries at the time and we made the Team New Zealand Yachting braids. You almost felt like part of the team. :-)
Sir Peter Blake, I absolutely adore the ABs, but Sir Peter is my sporting hero.
2024 and NZ are still kicking ass 🇳🇿
I rode on NZL41 today. Epic. Its of course retired, but what an awesome experience. Love NZ.
Sir Pete. Simply put, Legend.

I still have the caps 2x in blue with the logos.Fantastic times
Still have this on vhs lol
Great vid. Marvellous people. Thanks for posting. Good to look back at after ETNZ did it again a few months ago in Bermuda. Great memories

Well, he kept his mouth shut for 2021, it was only afterwards that the trouble started…
Fantastic documentary.
I hadn't realised they swept the americans, holy crap!
They lost one race in the whole series, I think.

Mighty Mary was a pig.
From memory, Conner had said some pretty unkind things about the mighty Mary crew, so the chances that they would give him the boat was slim at best
What a great man PB was; no nonsense pragmatic approach.... I wonder what his opinion of the latest AC cats racing in a ponced up wet dock would be?

They had fast boats

Made no impact on the end result. Just mere setbacks.
Karma hit one Australia a little later in the regatta when their boat sunk during their race with NZ.
@@mitchand9 it was more than a technicality that caused that karma. The Ozzies cheated by running a 3rd boat that entered.
