- Relive the glory days of the America's Cup in 1990's with Russell Coutts, Brad Butterworth, Dennis Conner and Peter Blake. See the best archive from Australia's win in the 1980s through to NZ's incredible racing in the 1990s. This is the story of how underdogs in the world of megabuck sailing came out on top due to Kiwi ingenuity, innovation and an inspirational attitude. With the backdrop of New Zealand’s economic reform in the 1980’s, this story captures how one of our greatest heroes, Sir Peter Blake, helped carve out a New Zealand identity as innovators and world class sailors.
I'm a Brit & remember '95 well. I visited the National Maritime Museum in Auckland to pay my respects to Sir Peter & to see Black Magic. Fay's "big boat" is outside. Tremendous! Thanks for the memories.
Thanks for your comment and for watching
@@colindnash818 not all that big is it? Those were the days, I think steinlager 2:is there as well
I remember a press conference after this victory where some old American yachting guy made a comment that went something like this, "On the outside Kiwis are like marshmallows; nice, soft and sweet, and they really are; but if you ever bite into them, you'll find that they have steel ball bearings inside them."
Man that was really emotional to watch, brought back memories. I still have the Steinlager 2 singlet from Sir Peter Blakes Whitbread round the world yacht race '89,90.
Wow! What a collectors piece. Loved that era!
Memories! Fantastic doco. RIP Peter Blake.
RIP Sir Peter Blake. 😢 Legend.
Exceptional piece. Beautifully crafted, loved to see all the people of the time, awesome. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Dennis Connor was an a.hole but boy did he make it exciting and competitive. Most kiwis really do have a soft spot for Mr Connor, truly one of the great competitors and characters in the sport of sailing.
He was such a villain in ‘83, ‘87 and ‘88 but it made it more satisfying when we beat him in ‘95
Arguably we never win the cup without Dirty Dennis being who he was and fanning the flames of passion!
@@iXplainITVERY satisfying 😂
I’ve never forgotten his unsporting ‘Only winners belong on the stage’ comment (I forget the actual quote).
22:22 Dennis at his celebratory, sporting best 🤣
RIP Sir Peter Blake
LEGEND
AMAZING KIWI
Red Socks well remembered and also that advert where people were flapping towels and sheets and blowing into the air fun days

Bravo Zulu ..... a wonderful journey down memory lane.
Great doco 👍
"Pretty Satisfying"
Well that sums it up fairly well I think
Classic kiwi understatement there
Wat an awesome watch🤙🤙
Can still remember our local Mongrel Mob chapter handing out ‘red’ socks during the campaign in 95
Hilarious, NZ really came together for those socks didn't they
Seriously?!! That’s 🤯+😎😎

I’m really glad they didn’t go into Peter’s death, not sure I’d handle that. Loved it will make my kids watch this to get it. Chur
Superlative. Thannk You!
RIP Sir Peter. I was there as a 15 year old on Queens St, wagging a day off school. I remember the teachers at De La Salle telling us that we would get an after school detention if we went and did not attend school that day. Fuck em, we all went anyway. The train from South Auckland was packed with us.
And she’s coming home again… watch this space
Home? Not sure there is a "home". If there is, it's surely America - America's Cup? 😂
@@dundeedolphin Australia will always hold the record for turning a high performance yacht into a submarine
@@dundeedolphinlook into the history of the name.
@dudmanjohn The trophy name? In what sense is NZ the "home" of the America's Cup? 👍🏻
Yessum what A , welcomed joyous journey down memory lane 💯 BRAVO ZULU.
Yes that was an amazing day and year i995 sadly destroyed in 2003 and not quite as good when we won again
I feel like there could be an equally-good “decline and fall” follow-up documentary about the next 8 years, 1995-2003 (since this was 1987-1995) and then maybe covering history up until the present in similar installments of time.
All these years and I still don’t know what design changes made NZL32 faster then NZL38
Designers Peterson, Davidson and Schnacks made NZL38 a little bit wider as an insurance policy in case NZL32 was too extreme. All the sailors preferred ‘32 over ‘38 in most conditions but either yacht would have won easily. Pretty awesome that TNZ retired ‘38 undefeated (on the water) and pulled out a faster boat for the semi finals! I still have NZL38 number plates!
Utopia writers are going to have a field day with this.
Dennis Connor was bummed that the kiwis was ingenious to make a boat from fiber glass, and he didn't lol. Now there's lots of fiber glass and no one complaining lol
So, when do they get to re name this race to 'The once upon a time America's Cup'?
Interesting Brad Butterworth wasn’t (available to be?) interviewed for this…
this was the high water mark for the americas cup. soo many teams. sooo much wind.
why is pj not interviewed in this
PJ needs to comeback, steve McIvor is dreadful
I dont mind him.
Mcivor just doesn't shut up. its a pain
What about Peter Lester.
Sailing is not Steve’s forte.
@@johnmartin7158 peter is great.
should be focusing on the races not commentators besides no one is forcing you to listen to them.
Yesterdays Americas Cup are much funnier to watch compared to 2024.
IMO Foiling and matchracing are not a "match made in heaven "
I do not agree. The 2024 Louis Vuitton final has shown some of the best races ever: close, tactical & spectacular!
True
It's now becoming like F1, high tech but lacks the traditional aspect.
But anyhow, probably it's the evolution of the sport
I'd argue, with boats falling off their foils and losing speed, a skilled team can beat a less skilled team in a faster boat through excellence sailing. Case and point, France had the same boat as Team New Zealand yet didn't even qualify for the semifinals. Their inexperience cost them, despite their boat being clearly the equal to every other.
In the old cup, the faster boat meant more than the skill of the sailors. Once behind you couldn't get ahead, which frankly is a similar problem to the new boats, because sailing is that type of sport
Dennis Conner really was a horrible person, glad he lost in the end
Ah, _Sir_ Michael Fay, suave pirate in a suit. A man who made his fortune ripping off the Kiwi economy doing deals that weren't yet illegal in NZ. And then took that same practice- doing things within the letter of the law but outside the spirit of the rules- to the Americas Cup. Masquerading as a gentleman, he set out to use the Deed of Gift as a legal weapon, but DC and the SDYC bounced it right back at him. Where rich, brash Fay failed, earning contempt for bad sportmanshio, modest Peter Blake succeeded and earned respect from sailors all over the world. Karma
It’s not quoted here, but the anecdote in Coutts’ memoir that Fay was literally drunk when he decided to challenge and everyone who worked for him was too afraid to say no even when he sobered up is pretty telling.
