So good to hear PJ's salty voice again. We miss his passion, endless knowledge, experience, wisdom and humility. We are yet to see his equal. Hope he is enjoying good health and vitality.
Nulla! Che peccato!
These boats versus the foiling catamarans? Do I have to choose? The modern cats are amazing but these are actual sailboats. I can see what they're doing with their sail trim. The cats of today are like spaceships...super cool but not resembling anything I'll ever be able to sail. I love them both.
So nice to see this type of racing again. Modern day cats are certainly spectacular and exciting but so was this. It's like ODI cricket and a five day test cricket. The longer version is more pure. Modern day Americas Cup racing is synonymous with the average attention span of people today.
I like the big mono hulls and hearing all the creaking, groaning and straining of the hardware and ropes against the wind and water. I wouldn't have a problem if they wanted to bring in more modern technology within this formula though.
I watched this after seeing the latest races and have to say this is streets ahead for interest and ex citement. Do you think we will ever go back to these designs?
not with the Americas cup.. will these type of boats race again? I'm sure they may already but again Americas cup will most always be cutting edge boat design.
yep last of the real sailboat races, did you see when they stopped before a start, both pointed and stayed in one direction, and backed up using the sails
@Despiser Despised funny you mention F1 - a sport I know pretty well. I'd argue the strategy in F1 is like monohull racing while the simple speed factor with multi-hulls is like watching drag racing.
With the slow boats there was still tactics. necessary. The new fast boats are won by the better logistics (material). Whoever invests more money wins the America Cup today
@@PeterAden. Totally. Went down 2 Mondays ago or is it 3 to Team Emirates dock and saw the boat. Extremely impressive. Worth the 3 stage bus journey. Cheers.
This is apples and oranges compared to the nee AC game. Sail Trim and tactics can't be replicated in the new boats. If speed was the only thing that matter now race fans wouldn't watch anything but drag racing. Classic monohull match racing will Never die in the eyes of true sailors
The America's Cup isn't about match racing, it is just a match race format because it is only 2 boats. The America's Cup is supposed to be about a combination of design and skill, developing the best sailing program that your country can put together, monohulls don't fit this bill anymore. The America's Cup should be a box rule and with a nationality rule. We just need a defender to actually implement this.
@Angelous Bacon what part of "a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations" is difficult for you to understand? www.americascup.com/en/history
in a museum ?? even vendee globe imoca monohull do have foils ! and they sail in the worst seas like the current tempest in the south indian ocean. so what s the point of those old fashioned boats, a part from nostalgia ??
It depends on wind angle and strength. If NZ had clean air they would have been able to stay there and run over the top of Prada but they didn't and couldn't because they were getting dirty air off Prada's sails.
I was 17th man for Prada 2003 vs Artemis...an unforgettable experience! Forza Prada 2021!
bobanyfingelf that’s awesome! i have only raced as big as a far 40 i cant imagine what it must be like on these magnificent boats.
Iuj
Even though the new boats are amazing, I loved the old big monohulls
So proud... my uncle was on Prada here in 2000 america's cup
Thanks very much for the upload!!
The last and greatest monohull TNZ built and raced.

Yes PJ's commentary really added depth to these races.
commentators are what really made this really exciting to watch. Peter Montgomery's voice and style is so unique, the Attenborough of commentating
I rember Paul Cayard with his green spinemkeer.
Love hearing all the names of the old Nz Sailing legends

Hai pienamente ragione !!!!!
This is great match racing! Good times.
Still love the mono hulls... But I've adapted to the new sailing in the AC.

catamarans are still sailboats. I truly don't don't understand this line of reasoning
THese races are pretty exciting, i like the old boats, but from memory, the races were closer to 3 hours?
Proper Americas cup!!!
Great to see the monohulls racing. Animal ❤
yeah lot better than the 25 min races now!!!
So nice to see this type of racing again. Modern day cats are certainly spectacular and exciting but so was this. It's like ODI cricket and a five day test cricket. The longer version is more pure. Modern day Americas Cup racing is synonymous with the average attention span of people today.
Someday the IACC class may be revived with its own events as the J-Class and 12-Metres have been.
If you look at the history of any race, it is about going faster. Love the Cats!!! Drag racing now with 10,000hp. REALLY??? Yes, awesome.
Love listening to Peter Gilmour commentate at this level.
I like the big mono hulls and hearing all the creaking, groaning and straining of the hardware and ropes against the wind and water. I wouldn't have a problem if they wanted to bring in more modern technology within this formula though.
This I can relate to! This is real sailing! Bring monohulls back!
They have. The new AC boats are monohulls

Much more 'REAL' sailing than what we have to watch today.

No. The AC has always been about pushing the technology. They never go backwards

They're all beautiful boats and incredible racing.
I fell asleep just after the start and woke up just before the finish....didn’t miss a thing
Nice race
I hope wee sailing also in Americas cup
i was there. great sailing. there is a Hienze ketchup boat somewhere in the the video.
I was there. What a race!!!!!!!
Bring the mono-hulls back!
Monohulls were much prettier and less dangerous.
The monohulls are back =

I do miss the match racing.
Oh, and the gennakers
see yesterday's race and this makes us understand how fucking accelerating we are.

Intro seemed endless.

Remind me again why multi-hulls are better?
That's like asking why vanilla is better than chocolate or vice-versa-- it's up to individual taste.
@Despiser Despised funny you mention F1 - a sport I know pretty well. I'd argue the strategy in F1 is like monohull racing while the simple speed factor with multi-hulls is like watching drag racing.
@Despiser Despised all good man, each to their own. The multis are spectacularly fast.
@Despiser Despised agreed
Much faster, more spectacular.
These boats wouldn't catch on today genz would have lost interest before the boats crossed the start line.
With the slow boats there was still tactics. necessary. The new fast boats are won by the better logistics (material). Whoever invests more money wins the America Cup today
@albertaristoteles7702 Team New Zealand has won it twice in a row with less money than they other teams.

Team New Zealand is the real thing. The winners forever

john Handfield Speed is 'all that mattered' in this AC final. Superior boat speed for TNZ made this very one-sided.
@Angelous Bacon what part of "a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations" is difficult for you to understand? www.americascup.com/en/history
Why is prada shoe so expensive
So they can afford to build AC boats.

Press 2 for Google translate.
He was just saying that he thinks catamarans have ruined the America's cup.
Peter Aden
I agree if that is true................Thank you!
+Lawrence J You question the all knowing Google?!?! Get out you muggle!! lol
Although I'm still finding this AM cup quite interesting.
non e vero...ora, vanno piu veloce e piu forte!
Back when there were real boats!!
Ciao Prada ciao...... 😎
The boats look so old fashioned!
Nooo. Doing 45 knots in a 15 knot breeze... Show me that on a mono-maran

Try 50 knots!
Foils should be a different class like S1 (Saling 1) like the F1. Monohulls should remain sailing America's cup as the did for decades. Who agrees?
in a museum ??
even vendee globe imoca monohull do have foils ! and they sail in the worst seas like the current tempest in the south indian ocean.
so what s the point of those old fashioned boats, a part from nostalgia ??
AC75s are monohulls. Stop whining.
This next AC racers are a major YAWN. Mono-marans are great for cocktails and beer but .... when its time to go fast. Get a CAT or eat my transomes.
This comment did not age well!
Loyal? that didn’t age well did it
this is propper sailing none of this flying crap
lol fuck up, this way boring compared to nowadays
Awesome response to K Wez! :) The foiling boats are far more entertaining to watch.
When they had real boats and not the technological unseaworthy crap they using today.
wake me up when it's over zzzz
the commentators are wrong about half the shit they say smh
Got some examples?
@6:58 "they've got to tack away to get clean air" the're the bloody windward boat ffs
Go watch this video that explains how air bends off the sails in that position. ruclips.net/video/TZJ8V2ABaGE/видео.htmlm15s
I get that, but that only would apply if NZ was right on the ass of prada. They aint, they're a boat length to windward.
It depends on wind angle and strength. If NZ had clean air they would have been able to stay there and run over the top of Prada but they didn't and couldn't because they were getting dirty air off Prada's sails.
Prefer 12-meter boats, like Courageous and Intrepid.
