That's awesome bro.. you definitely were in the presence of true talent and greatness man.. atheist is one of the inventors of technical death Metal.. period.. and to be able to say you were there when that album was released with those guys is beyond cool and awesome man.. that's fuckin brutal as hell..lol.. good stuff bro.. cheers..
These guys pretty much invented technical death Metal.. and Roger Patterson was one of the first death metal bass players to play with the jazzy/death metal type style.. hands down.. this band is amazing.. and that crowd is like wtf, lol.. they re just standing there not knowing what to do because they're so good you just wanna watch them play.. and Kelly's voice sounds kinda like Chad grey from hell yeah and mudvayne.. lol.. still killer tho.. I love atheist..
Atheist is also going on a tour through the US and Europe and they'll be making a live DVD. I hope to hell they succeed, because it'll be amazing seeing an excellent live DVD from a genre as underground as tech death.
Well since Kelly wrote almost all of the guitar parts, I think he's qualified to make judgement on these legendary tunes These men, and this band were the most technical mf'ers of their day. Their will never be another Atheist.
sounds great, i heard this was reunion without (almost nothing) training, songs are so complicated, and also played live. R.I.P Roger Patterson. Such great bass player. Atheist, jazz, death metal, progressive metal, with smart lyrics. Tony Choy, rules also.

i got that gnostic cd for free at some concert of theirs i think back in the day. to this day never listened to it more than a song. singer was the problem for me
my guitar teacher jeff was good friends with kelly back when Atheist first started out. He saw them at their practice space jamming out and said it was one of the craziest music he had ever heard. He and his girlfriend used to 'double date' with kelly and his girlfriend too haha
the sickest drummer and bassist in metal EVER!!!! .. so creative and different .. no blasts just complete insanity .. and their really nice ppl too .. i saw them @ the sterling in allentown a few months ago... and flyn was nice enough to talk drum with me and not get an "i'm a rock god" attitude
I've seen more technical bands play a lot cleaner, but this is Atheist in 2006, and they're also 10-15 feet apart from each other and facing the crowd. I bet they'd kill in a smaller venue or if they didn't try to put on a show for a big crowd.
Yeah, at first I thought it was maybe one of those RUclips overdubs that people do, it was so lame. The guy can kill, but I'm confused at why he didn't. 1. They should have all come in and finished Samba Briza, of course it wouldn't have the piano but... 2. Was that an attempt at Portrait of Tracy at the end?
I'm Christian, but I can definitely relate with atheists and especially agnostics...so many questions... one thing I do know, Atheist the band is awesome (except I felt pity for Kelly during the bass solo...wanted to see him play oh well.)
I actually agree, his whole approach reminds me of something you would see in a mötley crue show or something. But still the amount of talent/skill oozing from this band makes it ok.
Agreed. I didn't get to talk with Steve too much, but the rest of the band were great guys. Helped them with their gear and shit after the show. Fucking nice guys.
actually thumbs up, i respect your opinion, haha. here's what i like in the bass jam, maybe not so much as what I like but what i find objectively good: the fact that he did a spinal tap jazz solo at a metal show, the tapping, essentially his performing, but when the drums come in the groove is fresh, but the jam itself wasn't the best, i admit, i think it's more of the mythical aspect of his solo in the middle of a metal show
I think that death metal and tech metal nowadays is much better. Atheist is one of the few bands that stand the test of time. This, and their music from the late 80s-early 90s is amazing. RIP Roger Patterson. Sean Flynn is a beast on drums. I'm proud to say that we share the same hometown of Sarasota, FL
much better? dude, today, a lot of bands just sound the same, same concepts, same presets, same copied ideas. there was way more variety back in the day. i wish i'd still be there
@@hazardeurI disagree. There is plenty of variety today, but with a much higher level of playing. Faster, more technical, better production. Get with the times, my friend.
@@jamesmiller6217 more technical? i have yet to see a band that impresses me more than the technicality of spiral architect, the perfect and tasteful blend of fusion and metal of Cynic, the raw power and fast brutality of stuff like in their darkened shrines or The sound of perseverance, better soli than dreaming neon black and better leads than politics of ecstasy, etc. etc. and on top of that, all these bands could/can write awesome songs, they invested as much in songwriting skill as in technical skill. the only thing that changed with todays bands is that they play a bit faster. today, more people can play this ridiculous stuff, fair enough. but most of them either cover existing stuff or play in bands nobody wioll know in 20 years. if anything. and btw, i only compare live to live playing. everybody can shine in the studio, especially when the stuio is your bedroom with unlimited time. even the production.....better? nah. there are more bands today with decent productions, yes. techn helps them to avoid real shitty productions. but on the other hand, many productions today sound sameish. back in the 90s, every prdocution sounded completely different from one another. not always for the better but personally, i rather have diversity and accept some stinkers. there really are a handful of modern bands that really push the envelope in a unique way. saying stupid stuff like bands are better, faster and more technical nowadays just shows a complete lack of understanding. you could argue that in average that statement could be true but even then....you also need to write good songs, first and foremost and if you add that factor, all of a sudden, the list gets very thin very quick
