So glad that Chuck told Sean " Just do your thing". Timeless and breathtaking. Sean was without a doubt, one of the best that ever picked up the sticks. Period.
Chuck was talented and skilled, but what always impressed me was his creativity and vision, pushing the envelope, and one way was to work with amazing musicians and let them do what they do. ALL of the drummers (percussionists) in Death brought their own strengths, created great music, and helped move the genre forward.
This dude's performance on this album changed the way metal drummers looked at the drums. He grew up learning all sorts of different genres of music and that heavily influenced his style of playing. His other band at the time was jazz-fusion-metal; Cynic. A few years later he'd be playing alt-rock for like 10 years before coming back to metal. Gene Hoglan has said that he had to step his game up after watching what Sean could do in Human.
The loss of Sean was a tremendous shock to the metal community, he was an influence for many drummers and even after 30 years his work is still respected and so brilliantly executed
Totally agree with you,I think Steve ashiem is another death metal drummer from the original Floridian masters who is totally overlooked and underated, he is the Dave Lombardo of death metal in my opinion.
RIP Sean, he brought his jazz influences to heavy music, Death was on a different level back in the days, guitar riffs, drumming everything. You should watch live in LA with Richard Christy on drums

Same happened to me! Lombardowas my hero, along with Vinnie Colaiuta. But I was 17 (spring of 1994) and the album was Individual Thought Patterns with Hoglan on drums. Shattered my brain.
This is true. Human was released at a time when Gene was not only a well established drummer but, at the time, death metal drumming was more about who can hit drums the hardest and fastest… Sean brought the jazzy / groovy element to death metal that didn’t exist back then.
Sean sadly passed away last year. His playing in Death and Cynic is probably some of the most influential for later extreme metal drummers coming in the 90s and 00s. You definitely have to check out some stuff from Cynic. I’d recommend something off of their first album, Focus (1993). Here’s a drum cam of their song Veil of Maya ( ruclips.net/video/WimJPwLdGls/видео.html ). Hope you have a lovely day, Andy!
this is basically what happens if a fusion drummer wants to play metal. he's been training himself in jazz and fusion and then basically went to play in Death and laong with Cynic, creating a perfect hybrid of the two genres that still hasn't been surpassed to this day. No other band has had this natural flow and inventive yet muscial patterns and rhythmic ideas.
you NEED to check out his cynic live video from around the same time. It's a sideview of him and it's a full concert. RIP Chuck and Sean......2 Masterminds who are forever lost to this world. But we can eternally pay homage to what they have created for us and let it flow through our ears and hearts.
The album this came from (Human) was what set the stage for tech death. And Sean was a big part of that. He only did one album with Death, and was succeeded by Gene Hoglan. I saw Gene say in an interview once that he was blown away by Human, and he remembered saying "good luck if you ever need to replace that guy". And then one day Chuck (Schuldiner, the lead guitarist/vocalist/songwriter of Death) called him and asked him to join as the drummer. Gene was drumming for Death Angel back then, but splitting his time between drums and guitar. Gene said that joining Death and having to learn Sean's drumming forced him to lift his game, and ultimately choose to focus on drums. So we have the Gene that we have today, in part, due to Sean and Chuck. Sean changed the game, metal drumming took a huge leap forward thanks to him, and he doesn't get enough credit for that imo. Glad you enjoyed the vid, he's definitely a guy worth looking into more. RIP Sean.
This is one of the best picks yet. I've asked for Sean before as well. Do yourself a favor and listen to the entire Human album. And then listen to the Focus album by Cynic. And then just go ahead and listen to everything else Sean has ever done. Superior drummer. Great review Andrew! Be well!

Modern prog metal drumming was revolutionized by this man. And tons of drummers don't even realize. He may have not been a household name. But his reach on the music community is immeasurable
one of the most underappreciated, influential metal drummers of all time straight up. limited work in metal catalog wise, but all extremely unorthodox and genre changing. one of the real "boogeyman" guys that you don't hear about enough.
Im 50 and we know how insane the "Human" album was from guitar, bass and drumming, and lyrics! It's a masterpiece top to bottom. Those alive at the time know what this record means to metal. RIP SEAN AND CHUCK
It's important to admit that this guy was asking first. It was his gift that allowed the whole style to take a giant step forward. He changed the rules of the game! In addition to power and speed, he brought metal-drumming musicality! He was just the first. It is always difficult to be the first.
You have to do 2 of his other playthroughs in his other band. Evolutionary sleeper, and Adam's Murmur. It really showcases the differences in his playing, and similarities.
Voice is an instrument for me as guitars, drums. It gives the whole picture. Doesn't matter about what he sings at least for me. Listen to some Melodic Death Metal bands and you'll understand that without growling their music is not so tasty. Because voice, guitars, drum are the same fist!
Thank you Andrew for reviewing this gem. I like the way you react und how differentiated you explain stuff. Your eyes are as aware as Garrett Miller's (e.g. Sean's right hand finger technique). R.I.P. Sean Reinert...DEATH and his drumming changed my view on Extreme Metal Music, thus my life...
Adams Murmur by Cynic (ruclips.net/video/aMybE62gwmY/видео.html) is phenomenal. Whenever I wanna check out mastery, I watch that one. Its short but its gold.
You can´t see his left hand but at 2:25 you can see him doing ghost notes. So we get an idea it´s sick too :) Ride accents at 6:43 are also cool. Btw those weird toms are not toms but micked pads from eletronic drums. I know... :)
When I saw Sean's drum cam for the first time (it was Lack of Comprehension) I immedietaly noticed his right hand work. While watching, it gives some kind of an odd satisfaction, looks like his palm and wrist are natural extension of a drum stick while at the same time stick has limitless freedom of movement, it just flows, I cannot explain. Eversince I watch other drumers work I pay attention to how their hand moves - if I see something similar to Sean's I immediately know that the guy is a fucking pro.
This dude is the OG when it comes to extreme drumming. How do you wrap your head around this if you hear it first time back then? There wasn't anything like it...
Cool video. Death is an awesome band!! RIP Chuck Schuldiner (singer/guitarist). I’m a fairly new subscriber, I found out about you when you started doing Joey Jordison reaction vids. RIP Joey, as well. I like watching these metal video reactions. Great stuff, man, keep it up!!

It's important to admit that this guy was asking first. It was his gift that allowed the whole style to take a giant step forward. He changed the rules of the game! In addition to power and speed, he brought metal-drumming musicality! He was just the first. It is always difficult to be the first.
Found it. This was before I was subscribed. I was lucky enough to see him and death on this tour
he`s playing just like on record . amazing drummer
You have to do 2 of his other playthroughs in his other band. Evolutionary sleeper, and Adam's Murmur. It really showcases the differences in his playing, and similarities.
Yes Can't wait to see more Sean. Thanks William
You picked the best one 🙌
RIP Sean and Chuck. Legends never to be forgotten!
Steve Flynn from Atheist drum cam Morrisound 1991. You have to check this out!
this footage is a monument, for those who know, and for metal drummers of course
My favourite drummer of all time.
BOOM!
Great to hear!
Adams Murmur by Cynic (ruclips.net/video/aMybE62gwmY/видео.html) is phenomenal. Whenever I wanna check out mastery, I watch that one. Its short but its gold.
YES! My favorite metal drummer (who’s a jazz guy!). Watch him play “Lack of Comprehension”. You will like my friend.
Death and Cynic are both craaaaazy good, the best actually
I know I already commented, haha...BUT
Rooney really explains the the attitude of writing and feeling your drums parts.... Right here 8:00
🙏
thanks for this video!!
No sweat Mario! 👊👌
20 years old in this video. Incredible.
You can´t see his left hand but at 2:25 you can see him doing ghost notes. So we get an idea it´s sick too :)
Ride accents at 6:43 are also cool.
Btw those weird toms are not toms but micked pads from eletronic drums. I know... :)
When this album first came out, the first thing that caught my attention was the drums. Amazing album. RIP Reinert & Schuldiner
Yes you can tell from the flowing technique and control going on!
Thank you so much!
I'll never forget When I worked @RelativityAtL, When I got my hands onthe PromoCassette of Human and couldn't wait to get home to blaze One before I"Fired it Up"&nearly Shit when I heard the Riculousness🤘God Bless you Chuck!!🙏❤️
Check out the album version of the song.
imagine playing double kicks at that speed back in 1990...
He’ll always be the best!🔥
A legend gone to soon. RIP Sean
RIP
_Flattening of Emotions_ - YEAH 🤘!
"That's what she said." 🤣 That one still works, keep it up!
'Keep it up'
I see what you did there...
@@AndrewRooneyDrums 😁😁😁
Didn't even know the band was that old, i've only found them through spotify... they sound so modern considering
