I never realized how legendary he was to the drumming world. I had obviously heard his name but never paid close attention to his work. I'll listen closely to his albums. This video was so inspiring to watch and a beautiful tribute to him. Thanks Drumtalk !
I had first heard Sean on the Cynic demo on the At Deaths Door compilation and I've been forever hooked on him. He revolutionized metal drumming and it has never been the same since. He was in a way the Eddie Vanhalen of metal drums. Just f'n changed the game! RIP Sean. The patron saint of metal drums. You will forever be missed.
everythhing Sean Reinert created is amazing. FOCUS will never not be one of my, or probably my absolute favorite album of all time. however, there was a lone track that i had gained from whoever i had aquired some other cassette of new goodies: 'pleading for preservation' 8-/ ...that song. all that energy. all the diversity, my view, love, and future of drumming in every way was forever changed for the better in a way i will never be, less than grateful for always, as the ridiculously understated recognition that it and he deserve. soon to be accompanied with everything else i could hear of his joint creations, his place in the top of my list would never change.// ,\m/ forever humbled and gifted by your talents and dedication. Thank you beyond words Sean.
Thanks Philips for celebrating this wonderful person's life! And thank you for celebrating the lives of the living too! I'm so happy that I was able to tell Sean how much he inspired me and my drumming via instragram. And with me many, many more people. I don't know if he read it, but I hope he did. I, too, was able to directly let Sean know how much he has meant to me. Way back in the Myspace days (yeah, those days), I reached out to him there, merely to thank him for the music and inspiration. I didn't expect a reply, but he replied with sincere appreciation. It seems to me like no fan was beneath him.
This video epitaph is a strong statement as to his character, drumming chops&influence, and the love friends had for the man. Who could ask for more than to be remembered like this?
What an absolute monster he was... His work on Cynic and Gordian Knot stands out as some of the most elegant and flawless drumming ever - finesse and brutality at once... And the mesmerizing intertwining with Malone... Thanks for creating this beautiful homage! What a great musical editing, impeccably alternating studio and live cues!
@broquil thanks for your comment and thank you for bringing up the audio editing -- I wanted it to reflect Sean's fluidity on the drums as good as possible
i am more of a guitarist then a drummer but i am a huge fan of cynic and his style of playing , i could watch him play for hours. when he passed i cried, sux to loose a hero. rest in power
This was fantastic. Loved all the interviews. Very well done tribute. I have been lucky enough to see one of my drum heroes play his Death era material on twitch, Gene Hoglan. You can really see/hear how Sean made Gene step it up on "IDTP".
IDTP was a game changer IN IT'S OWN RIGHT for me. And hey, IK EVERYONE loves/prefers the Reinert -Human CD generally (and in NO WAY would I discount it!). It's just that, for "me, myself and I"? I always preferred the Hoglan era Death material (with Symbolic being my favorite all time Death CD.) Maybe it's the actual MUSIC of the Hoglan era, OR maybe just that Hoglan was the more harder heavy player (as he described in the documentary) IDK but either way, THIS IS a GREAT documentary on Reinert, NO doubt.
Can we all just take a pause here, a moment to appreciate that Chuck, back when he hired Sean and Paul into Death, that he let Sean have like "free hands" on what to do with the drumming? The fact that he came in with this sort of creativity, changed metal drumming forever, Sean is dearly missed and will be so forever, your influence stays with us man!
The intro arrangement of Sentiment shown @ 21:54 is still one of my favorite drum ideas ever. RIP Sean, thanks for making our world of music richer forever.
Great upload. I remember picking up Human when it came out and being like "What the. Who is this guy?" I had to open the cassette insert to make sure Bill Andrews didn’t take all the lessons in-between albums.
great montage for honoring sean... I love Human as a record but that the bass is so buried is a damn shame... hearing the isolated tracks is like discovering whole new layers.
That one hit me hard.. Great video.. I have been a fan of Sean's since, Human as well.. Everything these legends(that I look up to as well)say about Sean is all true.. Sean being my favorite drummer of all thime.. That was much need and hits home.. Rest in peace Sean.. You are sorely missed..
When I saw Sean at the end waving goodbye to the camera, it broke my heart. You guys can't do this to me, man. It's too much. He was way too young to go and he will be missed. Rest in Peace Sean, you will forever be one of the greatest
This is an incredible documentary! My eyes really opened up when I heard Human and he was such a great drummer! I want to learn to how to play drums and his style is 1 I want to strive to learn. Again, a great documentary!
The sadness I feel for his loss continues today and this rips that scab off in the best way. I never expected to see something like that and I'm so thankful to be watching it. I'll never look or listen to a drummer the same way since I first heard him on Human. What a sublime beast. Love to his family and loved ones.

Everything he performed on, is pure gold. Sean was one of a kind, and also the first of a kind. His sound will always have a unique signature. Great tribute video. Thanks for doing this.
What a great tribute. I think I've spent most of the last year trying to not think about the fact that he's gone, and this is a great chance to remember him and celebrate his life and his monumental contribution to the world of drumming and metal more generally. Metal today would look completely different if he hadn't been around. I got so much of my (very limited) drum repertoire from his playing. RIP Sean.
goddamn it so sad ... I just for whatever reason got drawn to the Human album lately (mabe at early 40a I am finally grown up enough for it) and being a former drummer, when the first tunes turned up in my head already before I even played it there was this: fuck man this guy was so good, so brilliant in terms of thinking the musics ... and there I find out he is dead :(( godspeed brother
Been re-listening to his focus and human days, was always mesmerized by his style of drumming, such love and flawless effort with his drumming, and to watch this, sent a few tears..hoe much influence you had in the introduction to the death metal scene Sean. We're all so blessed to be touched by your brilliance. The Focus album always sends me back to my teenage days, such awesome memories for me,and the album, the whole album,it sends me into another world. Miss you. Thank you,and God bless you!!
I had the luck to buy Human when it came out, i say "the luck" because i could experience what these guys are talking about here, that feeling of hearing something that sounds profoundly new and like 3 steps above everything else you ever heard. It was faster, groovier, harder and more insane than anything i ever listened to. What a legacy Sean left with one record ! 1 damn record and he changed the face of metal to a point people are still talking about it 30 years later. RIP Sean Reinert
Same, I was (am) the biggest fan of Death and literally counted the weeks until Human's release. I picked it up the morning it came out, just after the record store opened; I had never been more excited to hear an album in my life and I don't think I have since. Chuck, my idol, recording with members of Cynic and bass genius Digorgio - the stuff of dreams. I had a feeling when I first dropped the needle on to the plastic that I was about to listen to a classic and now, 30 years later, that expectation has been more than justified. Interestingly, I was the same age as Sean when he recorded it, though I didn't know that (I know now, thanks to this video). A fantastic tribute to the man and an absorbing insight into one of the greatest metal albums ever made.
Ok this is getting me ! I never “made it” like theses guys did BUT I was just under that Local radar of musicians in the Poughkeepsie NY area in 1990 1991 till now 2023 and I lived right down the street from Paul Masvidal didn’t even know it. I was younger than these guys just started 9th grade and they were already well into high school a few grades up. I played guitar pretty well but was too young to hang but on occasion would get the chance to jam with these guys at party’s and band practices and played and made relationships with almost every musician in that circle. Some I still talk to today. I was in 13 to 15 different bands in the NY area from 1990-2009. It is too nuts to hear that we ALL pros and the underlings like me heard Sean on Death Human in 1991 and it FREAkED us out!! When digital age came about I emailed Sean Malone and Paul masvidal about guitar tablature for Cynic because it was to advanced for me to hear and know the notes like a Metallica or My Dying Bride or Slayer songs where I can hear exactly where they are on the guitar neck . My ear let me enjoy the drums and I knew some pros on drums so I started messing around in the late 1990’s as I could understand the ride cymbals he was playing and the patterns ,grips and techniques he used so now I mess with drums more than guitar . Thanks so much for making this documentary/tribute it really brought back some shit for me.

Hearing that Gene Hoglan felt he had to sort of elevate himself to be able to follow up the Human album truly speaks massive volumes. This is an incredible documentary thank you. RIP to the innovator and one of the gods of drumming full stop!
My favorite drummer above and beyond. Human is my favorite extreme metal drumwork of all times; and I´m glad to hear that monsters behind the kit look a it the same way. What a terrible loss for all of us who enjoyed his masterpieces.
Dirk played in Death To All tribute, he played all the parts flawlessly. Extremely impressive…this whole video is pure gold. Standing ovation!
thx mate!
As absolutely outstanding of a drummer he was, I don't think it can be overstated enough, how good a person he seemed to be. Always humble, happy and grateful. A shining example of a monster of a musician with a wonderfully beautiful soul. R.I.P. dude, thanks for everything. 🤘❤️
THANK YOU FOR THIS! Sean NEVER gets the credit he deserves. That story about recording the intro to Lack of comprehension with Paul helping swap sticks was classic stuff!
Portal is so underrated, Love that album
Human completely changed metal. It’s my favorite album of all time and won’t ever lose its place 🤘
Mastermind behind HUMAN and FOCUS, total legend
Such a beautiful tribute to Sean’s legacy. Not just as a musician but as an amazing person, hope you would’ve been able to get Paul to talk a bit but even so, thank you so very much for this! ❤️
yeah I know. let's say I planned to have just drummers in it but then Steve was there at both Testament gigs I had my gear there anyways and it would have been idiotic not to have him in it since he was very close to him and who could better tell first hand stories from the Human days...?
I never realized how legendary he was to the drumming world. I had obviously heard his name but never paid close attention to his work. I'll listen closely to his albums. This video was so inspiring to watch and a beautiful tribute to him. Thanks Drumtalk !
you're welcome Dylan!
Listen to Human. As soon as you press play you'll be blown away by the drumming.
This is an incredible documentary. THANK YOU! And thank you Sean, for everything.
If youre a fan of Death Human or Cynic Focus..i highly recommend this video! thank you for making this!
What a video, that ending made me cry, the How Could I outro... RIP Sean and thank you.
Thank you Drumtalk for this great documentary
everythhing Sean Reinert created is amazing. FOCUS will never not be one of my, or probably my absolute favorite album of all time. however, there was a lone track that i had gained from whoever i had aquired some other cassette of new goodies:
'pleading for preservation'
8-/
...that song. all that energy. all the diversity, my view, love, and future of drumming in every way was forever changed for the better in a way i will never be, less than grateful for always, as the ridiculously understated recognition that it and he deserve. soon to be accompanied with everything else i could hear of his joint creations, his place in the top of my list would never change.// ,\m/
forever humbled and gifted by your talents and dedication.
We should celebrate each others existence more/ Without others, we would be no one.
glad you guys love it so much -- means a lot to me
Well said my friend. A metal heart is hard to tear apart- Hammerfall
Certainly one of my favorite drummers of all time. Underrated for sure. He will be greatly missed.
Great tribute to a great player. You really did him, his music and his influence on metal justice with this beautiful video. Thank you.
He is the greatest. There is no one else. He changed everything.
This is a truly beautiful tribute.
thank you so much, John!
@@drumtalkofficial It certainly feels like that! :)
Now I hope someone does the same with Malone, such an enigmatic figure...
i am more of a guitarist then a drummer but i am a huge fan of cynic and his style of playing , i could watch him play for hours. when he passed i cried, sux to loose a hero. rest in power
@@jamescon55 I get totally hooked by that fretless bass on the ITP, every time I listen to it it is literally the only thing I hear.
@@nomadr1349 YEP.....Glad I AIN'T the ONLY one ......lol
Can we all just take a pause here, a moment to appreciate that Chuck, back when he hired Sean and Paul into Death, that he let Sean have like "free hands" on what to do with the drumming? The fact that he came in with this sort of creativity, changed metal drumming forever, Sean is dearly missed and will be so forever, your influence stays with us man!
Thank you so much for this video. Sean will be an inspiration for generations of musicians to come. Immortal through his art.
The intro arrangement of Sentiment shown @ 21:54 is still one of my favorite drum ideas ever. RIP Sean, thanks for making our world of music richer forever.
My favorite drummer. Can’t believe it’s been a year since his passing. Very awesome tribute you put together
That final hand wave broke my heart... One of the greatest musicians in the modern history.
Rest in power, Sean.
Focus changed my view on what metal, metal drumming and music in general could be and remains one of my favorite albums to this day. RIP Sean
Residents!
Great upload. I remember picking up Human when it came out and being like "What the. Who is this guy?" I had to open the cassette insert to make sure Bill Andrews didn’t take all the lessons in-between albums.
hahahaha
great montage for honoring sean...
Finally a documentary worthy of Sean.
The sadness I feel for his loss continues today and this rips that scab off in the best way. I never expected to see something like that and I'm so thankful to be watching it. I'll never look or listen to a drummer the same way since I first heard him on Human. What a sublime beast. Love to his family and loved ones.
RIP My man. You really improved our lives with your art.
Jan 7th 2020 ... Neil
Jan 24th 2020 ... Sean
Earth's 2 best drummers ever, leaving us 17 days apart from one another .... This still disturbs my human head big time 🥁
Everything he performed on, is pure gold.
RIP Sean.
I took 4 months to have the courage to watch this, very emotional.
Incredible video. I learned so much about my favorite drummer! RIP to the jazz fusion death metal goat
beautiful doc. sean is the man who got me into drumming, huge inspiration to a whole generation. never forget! Rest in Power!
Sad to here Reinerts gone, he'll live on in the music he left for us.
Really nice from you to pay a well-deserved homage to one of the best drummers ever! Greetings from Costa Rica!
thanks mate!!
a beautiful soul gone too soon. thank you for what you left us
goddamn it so sad ...
A Cynic and Death version of Orion, such an apt description. Amazing Influential Drummer
Tomas Haake and Gene Hoglan....MONSTERS....remembering THE MONSTER....R.I.P.
You did an amazing job putting this video, his Drumming on HUMAN was DIVINE! The HUMAN Album is my Religion! Gruß!
Best way to pay tribute to the legend himself
Thanks so much for making this documentary/tribute it really brought back some shit for me.
thank you for your story!!
Thank you for this! It is a really great tribute to Sean. I met him after a Cynic show in Chicago around 2009 or so and for about 15 mins we were geeking out over Vinnie and talked about his performance on City Lights. He was very passionate about music and had a great sense of humor. Just a very down-to-earth, cool cat. That’s how I will always remember him.
The story about the intro of Lack of Comprehension is so beautiful. I kind of imagine them goofing around about that :')
yeah, that story got me emotional as well, that is why I paid some extra attention to get the intro tune in sync with Steve's humming
What a video! Truly a labour of love
Hey Igor! thank you for your comment and for mentioning the little editing tidbits I included. even for me the onion cutting starts at the end every time I watch it. miss him....
33:05 The Most Elegant and Powerful Drummer Ever❤
Im glad i met Sean twice, what a great guy, rip buddy. Still have the pics
The human album is definitely a metal masterpiece with all the work involved.
Seriously awesome doc.
This tribute video to Sean is so completely awesome. So sad and unnecessary for him to be gone. Thank you sincerely to all of you guys, (drummers, other musicians, friends/family) for putting this together and letting us use it like a tool to keep us all together.
...R.I.P. Sean Reinert
Never to be forgotten...
One of the drumming gods of our time. I will always fondly remember him answering my nooby drumming questions via Facebook and Email. RIP Master
Thx for the video, the work you put in to make this happen is awesome, I wasn’t quite familiar with Sean before watching this, so thx a lot man, really enjoy the channel and all the content, god bless you guys! Keep up the good work! Love from Taiwan 🇹🇼!
He restructured my vision on playing drums, changed my approach, affected my playing very-very-much. Thank you, Sean. Thank you for great video
The most musical drummer in metal!!!...yeah i said It!!not even Mr haake or hoglan can compete!
Everyone has their own voice dude. It's not a competition.
@@mpk33 i know for example Mr Jamie st merat and elliot Hoffman are my all time favorites....yet objectivity speaking Mr sean reinert was the GOAT
@@isaackmojica8302 Ok dude, whatever. Not going to argue with you about it. Just remember that art is subjective. Sean was utterly amazing & he's you're GOAT. But mine is someone else. And someone else's is someone else still. There is no definite answer when discussing a subjective matter. But we're all here in this place to give praise to an absolute phenomenal supreme drumming GOD.
Thank you so much for making this tribute, the clips are incredible. 34:44 is a perfect example of how revolutionary Sean's CONCEPT was, approaching Cynic's songs like fusion charts, freely improvising around the "hits". Great to hear everyone's stories about him too.
R.I.P. Sean!! You have inspired so many in the music field and outside with your music that you have left on this planet. I know for me personally I will always look up to you as one of the best musicians.
Sean is legendary!!! His brilliance will endure forever!!
Sean Reinert change the drumming metal world. He is next generation to Buddy Rich and Neil Peart.RIP Sean my heart never forget u Master 🤘
Sean may be gone, but legends never die.
This video is One that I will keep with me forever! Thank You Sean Reinert for everything! Thank you Phillip and Drum Talk for this amazing work!!
that's huge compliment, thank you Doug!!
What a great hommage to one of the best drummers ever.
Had the chance to attend to a Cynic concert in Mexico City and, despite Sean was a little bit sick, he gave it all on stage.
RIP, Mr. Reinert and thank you for all the great music.
