Should You Buy 1 Rolex Submariner Or An Affordable Watch Collection?

  • Today we return to a format from the earliest days of the channel and answer some frequently asked questions on collecting watches. Is collecting "affordable" watches a mistake? Would it be better to sell an entire collection of affordable watches in exchange for just one grail watch?
    In this video I aim to help Daniel, a member of the good Gentry, who emailed me for advice. After collecting watches for 2 years his current daily favorite is the Glycine Combat Sub GL0185. He wants to sell his large collection to buy his dream watch - a Rolex Submariner, reference 16610 - which is approximately the same value. What should he do?
    Join me for some classic Gentry watch collection talk, including advice for Daniel, and a few things one should take into account when contemplating such a big decision, from financial considerations to seller’s remorse.

    Daniel should NOT sell his "cheaper" pieces. I've had 4 Rolexes over the last 40 years; a 70's red-letter Sea Dweller, a 2 tone Sub and 2 GMT 2s. 3 were sold, one stolen. Now I'm down to one, a Sinn EZM 3F and very happy to not be chasing grails anymore. My late father once told me that "Most of the time, the wanting is more fun than the having." Now, at 66 years old, I realize how right he was.

      I always say “never finance a hobby” so I buy what I can, save for what I want and when I look into my WatchBox I see a collection that started when I could hardly afford to buy one to ones that are worth thousands. Each one I got to remind me of a particular moment or event, each one I researched and read up on and determined which one I wanted. I wear them all, I don’t worry about the odd bump or scratch as they just add to the story behind each one. I always tell people, when they ask, to buy what they like, never worry about what others think and just buy what they enjoy. It’s their collection after all, it’s reflective of their tastes and their growth as a collector.

For someone like me, i could never justify buying a time piece for more than a thousand dollars. It makes no sense to me why someone would buy a watch like a tudor that is an homage to a rolex, that still costs thousands of dollars., when there are high tier clones that often have better movements or the same eta movements you see in "affordable" watches that only cost $500. I was in this predicament several years when I was wearing a lot of fashion watches. I sold them all to buy a Rolex Sub. Once I purchased my first Rolex I quickly found myself owning 4 of them. As I learned more about watches I moved into more expensive brand like Patek, AP and a few others. Fast forward to today I reduced my collection to just a few grail pieces and several unique boutique pieces. I said all that to say watch collections are ever evolving. I've always wanted a high end watch, so I bought one, when I turned 30 (like someone I know), and it was a dress watch, fitting for my every day wear, since my work requires a suit and a tie, on an every day basis. And I thought that was it. But then, I needed a diving watch, for the seaside and vacation. Then a beater, for around the house. Then a chronograph caught my eye. Then I needed a digital beater for the gym... And so on and so forth. One thing is for sure, a true watch lover, can't stop on a one watch, even if it's A.Lange & Sohne minute repeater.

    Hi TGV
    Tough question. There is a kind of mid term strategy that might satisfy many people though. It just requires you being very conscious about what kind of guy/girl you are. If you’re of the formal kind, buy an expensive dress watch and some more affordable pieces for sports, work purposes and so on. If you’re the sporty kind buy an expensive diver and some cheaper ones for dress, work etc. You get the general idea I suppose😂
    This way you get to have your grail watch for the purpose where you’ll appreciate it the most and at the same time enjoy a collection...
    Not that I’ve been able to live up to this strategy - I generally use too much money on watches😏
    Keep up the good work👍

      @benjaminbarrera214 4 года назад +2

      Exactly, I'm a formal person so an enormous dive watch on me would be absolutely ridiculous! Almost all of my watches are vintage and would be considered dress watches. But sports watches didn't exist in the 20s-40s, the average everyday watch from that time is now considered dressy.

      Budget pieces, or even fashion pieces have their benefits. They can be more creative and expressive while the higher end watches tend to stick to a lot of templates, hence you see an oris, an omega, an Breitling and many of them look more similar than separate. I have a $20k collection of watches and my latest purchase which I've worn for the last 4 weeks straight was a skagen cheapo watch I got for $45 on ebay. It has a sandblasted grey/blue dial I find mesmerizing on a yellowy/tan strap. Perfect for summer.

People have asked me why am I buying cheaper watches like Seikos and not buy an expensive one like a Tag Heuer . To prove them that price does not matter , I let them take a guess of the price of the Presage and everyone guesses wrong , thinking it's a 1000-1500$ watch . But if you have the cash in the bank and have the option of interest free credit (and the self control not to spend the cash on something else) then why not make a little interest for yourself. I wouldn't do 48 months though - 12 months would be better.
      Of course bit of a mute point right now as interest rates are so low as to be pointless.

One should always meditate for a long time about a piece - if it doesnt come off of your head for that period, then it is the right choice to purchase.

In my experience, wearing a watch for some time is the only solid method, for figuring out, what you really like. And most people are affraid of selling, and trading, I was too, but after a while, you get the hang of it, plus, you get the chance to get many pieces through your hands.
