Instant follow for not saying "bright indirect light" like everyone says for every plant!! Drives me batty. "Bright shade, dappled sunlight is SO much more specific, thank you!
Thanks for the follow! Most houseplants are shade growing tropical plants. That’s why so many common houseplants are given the “bright indirect light” instruction. But most ppl’s homes are still wayyyy too dark and that causes plants to slowly die. Basically if you are walking a trail in the woods on a sunny day, the light hitting the ground is “bright indirect light.” Little to no direct sun, but rather bright shade. That’s similar to the light these plants get growing under the rainforest canopy😁
@@plantgayforlife exactly!! I always had easy plants and switched to harder ones and just learned that it's too dark inside! I have quite a number of anthuriums; they are mostly living in my cabinet as they seem to thrive in humidity. I planted my anthuriums in my own chunky potting mix. It’s interesting that you explained certain leafs type require certain watering.
I used to have them all in cabinets and grow tents as well. But as I curated my collection, the ones I kept got too big and had to be moved out. I even have one anthurium that's become a 3 foot tall floor plant! That's when I realized watering and humidity around the roots was more important, and now most of my anthuriums don't flinch when the humidity drops below 30% in the winter!

This video was definitely make for me lol, i have over 100 plants in my apartment and NONE are anthuriums lol I've always been so sacred of having them, but have recently been thinking that I maybe ready.
Glad I found you! I have just started my Anthuriums adventure starting with Palidiforium, Magnificum and Queen. I use all terracotta pots and am thinking as long as I keep the substrate moist it should be fine, but you scared me about the roots. I have some nice plastic clear pots coming, I guess I’ll switch to those instead. 😢
Anthuriums are great and not difficult once you understand their needs! That being said…terracotta can work against you in a household environment. The dry air (compared to, say, a greenhouse) will dehydrate the substrate much faster. I know someone who grows anthuriums VERY well in terracotta but he waters them every other day. The vase/no drainage-hole method I use allows me more time in between waterings so that I’m not constantly watering plants. I can leave for a week and return, and my plants will not be dehydrated. Anthuriums are not like philodendrons, most of them require consistent moisture and will not grow well if they dry out in between waterings too often.
@@plantgayforlife your friend sounds like me. I don’t think more than 3 days go by before watering. Right now I don’t mind that as my schedule allows for it. I like doting over my plants. 😊 Thank you so much for your reply!!!
I only have a anthurium luxurians and she is thriving all due to your leca sphagnum recommendation! So ty for that! Great content and video as always. Also hello from the NYC plant group
This is gold for someone like me buying anthuriums first time in my life (and I bought 4 of them to start with lol) and quickly jumping onto youtube for some guidance. Quick q though: Does a combination of lecca+perlite+Pon+spagmoss work for anthuriums?
Thank you very much I think my Anthurium plant has a root rot problem because of water my leaves are turning brown and I don't know what to do but after watching your video I presume that it may be root rot problem.
Hello 👋 I just bought a small Veitchii. I will be transitioning it to leca because I put most plants in that substrate. Can I ask how I would mimic the sphagnum moss mound on the base. Should a plant it with the base snuggle under the leca and then when it grows add a pot extender and add more leca? What do you think? This is my first Anthurium. I live in Melbourne Australia.
I'm currently growing my first anthurium from seed (Pedatoradiatum) so this will be invaluable for the time to come even though I'm growing one of the terrestrial varieties, I'll be sure to put my little one in a glass container so I can monitor his root development and humidity, it was one of those things that bothered me and wasn't able to figure out. It does make sense though.
@@plantgayforlife So a little update, Everything went great and then the little fucker started dying on me, apparently they do not like to have water ON the leaf..... such a diva. Got it fixed though and the second I got things right he pushed out his 4th leaf (yes he's a he don't ask me why he just is), kinda surprised cause its the first leaf that looks 'velvetty' and easily 8x times the size of the first couple of leaves. Looks like I'm finally doing things right! Being emboldened by my 'succes' I ordered more seeds.... crystalinum, gloriosum and waroqueanum are now happily growing next to their big brother in their tiny drainage hole free transparent plastic cups and they are thriving! Can' t wait for them to put on some size.
@@theroyalpotato8390 that's exciting news! im happy to hear you haven't been discouraged by your seedling's setback. it still happens to me sometimes so you're doing nothing wrong! thanks for sharing the update!
If there’s one leaf, leave it on until it falls off on its own. A green stem can still grow roots and a new growth point if you keep it in water and keep the light bright.
I have found not using soil in my mix causes them to dry too quickly, at least in my environment. I use the same mix as I do for my other aroids, and they seem pretty happy.
I’ve only ever had “grocery store” anthuriums - you know the ones, they have the bright red flower they last a long time. I didn’t realize there are so many different kinds of anthuriums. I think I’d like to try growing one that has velvety leaves. Can you tell me one that would be suitable for someone who is a) intermediate plant person, but b) anthurium beginner? Thanks!!
I'm currently not growing any anthuriums but it is my 2023 plant goal to get one! I really appreciated your video. Which one do you think would be a good 'beginner' anthurium? Thanks!
It honestly depends on what catches your eye since there's such a variety! Two visually contrasting species I would suggest are clarinervium (thick leaves make it hardier than other velvet species I grow), and luxurians (great glossy/bullate leaf but slow growing)
Can you elaborate more on the care for could forest anthurium? I've had a cutucuense for a couple weeks now and I'm having a hard time finding care info for it. Thank you!
I haven’t grown that particular species so I couldn’t give specific care tips. Ask in an anthurium Facebook group like “Anthurium Addicts” and hopefully someone who has grown and cared for that species can help!
This was a great, very informative video! I am just now starting to expand my anthurium collection! I got two today! A Forgetii and a Luxurians x Radicans! 🥰
Great overview. I just had to pull out my Clarinervium tonight to address some root rot! 😩 Hopefully I caught it in time and it will bounce back. There were still lots of healthy roots and the stem was firm. 🤞🤞🤞 It’s been doing very well in pon substrate, but I may have added water to the reservoir too soon or overfilled. Your video gave me hope! Beautiful footage.
@@plantgayforlife really hoping it does!!! I’ve had it since it was a seedling and it was finally starting to upsize the leaves! It recently bloomed, too.
Thank you for this informative video 🙏 I've only got two Anthuriums in my home at present. A clarinervium and a pallidiflorum. Maybe I'll try that semi-hydro approach.

This is gold for someone like me buying anthuriums first time in my life (and I bought 4 of them to start with lol) and quickly jumping onto youtube for some guidance. Quick q though: Does a combination of lecca+perlite+Pon+spagmoss work for anthuriums?
It can depending on your watering schedule. That’s a fast draining and quick drying substrate so it will require a more frequent watering routine
Thank you very much I think my Anthurium plant has a root rot problem because of water my leaves are turning brown and I don't know what to do but after watching your video I presume that it may be root rot problem.
Thank you! Check those roots!
Hello 👋
I just bought a small Veitchii.
Don’t overthink it. Veitchii doesn’t need pampering. You can just use leca if you want
Very good video young man👏👏👏
This episode gets a toot!! Thank you for keeping it simple informative znf i interesting ! 🎉 you stay
Short sweet and to the point!😉😄
Beginner !!!!!! Love it!
You got this!
How exciting! yes give it high humidity for a few months until it puts on some size. good luck!
@@plantgayforlife So a little update,
Everything went great and then the little fucker started dying on me, apparently they do not like to have water ON the leaf..... such a diva.
I’m a newbie and ❤ this content!!!
Welcome to the mess! 😊
Hey there, so i currently have a cutting, single stem with some roots but the leaf has some browning, so I cut the leaf
Nice, it’s always smart to experiment. Everyone’s mix should be a little different to fit their watering schedule and environment:)
Thanks!!
Clarinervium is a great beginner velvet leaf anthurium (and one of the most beautiful plants ever)
I just subscribe to your channel so far this video is on point thank u so much for explaining step by step🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Welcome!
@@plantgayforlife Thank you for taking the time to respond!
Thank you for watching! Sorry for the late response. Forgetii and lux hybrids are beautiful!😁
Beautiful footage.
you got this! if there are good roots and the stem is not rotting, it will bounce back!
@@plantgayforlife really hoping it does!!! I’ve had it since it was a seedling and it was finally starting to upsize the leaves! It recently bloomed, too.
@@laurendao4467 don't be afraid to cut off inflos until it has bounced back, it'll force the plant to direct energy into rehabbing 🙂
This was such a great video thanks
Hahahha "My anthuriums.....they take it all" .... Yeah baby! Yeah!
🙌👍🙌 Great Job! Very Informative!!!!
Thank you for this informative video 🙏 I've only got two Anthuriums in my home at present. A clarinervium and a pallidiflorum. Maybe I'll try that semi-hydro approach.
those are two great hardy species!
