I think the turbo 4 is the best thing that has ever happened to the Cayman. The added HP and more importantly torque make the car so much more fun. Sure it doesn't have the 6 cylinder sound, but good lord, any Cayman short of a GT4 was a dog, especially with how tall the gearing was. Plus as a rally fan, I like the flat 4 sound, just channel your inner Colin McRae before you fire it up.
If blatantly detuned 911 motors are your thing, eat your heart out, Porsche made plenty of them. In the real world though, the base 718 is quicker than the 981 S, and the 718 S is quicker than a GT4. Progress is good
A common complaint among reviewers seems to be the cars perceived turbo lag. Lug the motor and then complain about how long it takes to get into boost. They rave about the manual, but then refuse to downshift. At least Alex showed both sides of the story. Drive it properly and theres no issue.
Agreed, it's almost as if people forgot how to drive. It was the same with the beautiful high-strung engines of yesterday...lug it around 2k and floor it and you won't get REALLY going until the tach finally hits 4-5k. I still strongly prefer non-turbo engines in all cars, but there's nothing wrong with this engine. It's only real fault is that it came out after an engine that sounded amazing.
I can't understand why this channel only has 645k subscribers when top gear has 6 million yet this channel has by far the best car videos now since Chris Harris stopped his regulars.
people still complaining about the sound.. I've heard one 718 boxster s driving past me like 2 weeks ago.. I don't know what exhaust did the guy have, but it was loud and raw.. awesome sound for a turbo 2 liter.. so yea, no need to complain, you can always make it sound better
Yeah, but they'll still complain that it doesn't sound like a flat-6. Like every Porsche flat-6 in the past 20 years hasn't sounded almost exactly the same and generic because of it.
Driven close to the limit on a track and you'll quickly see the suspension tuning is night and day...that being said, on the street it's negligible(adding to your point).
In my daily car I prefer quiet instead of noise and was wondering how loud in normal mode this car is with the engine 3 feet from your ears in terms of decibels/ear damage?
Weird sounds at idle pretty normal at highway speeds and fantastic if you rev the ears off of it. It's a sports car so don't compare it to a gt sedan though.
Unplug the fake noise generator/soundaktor and it's fairly sedate in terms of engine sound. Yes you can hear it but it's definitely more quiet than the 987 Boxster I owned back in the day. Tire noise is more noticeable at cruising speed and actually the Boxster is more quiet in this regard because you aren't getting sound reflections from the hatchback area like you do in the Cayman.
Everyone complains about the four cylinder sound. I had a 912 with an after market “Stinger” exhaust and loved the sound. Why shouldn’t the new Porsche four sound just as good?
The manual is going to have lag, but that is part of the fun - you have to shift and ring it out a bit. The PDK would solve that instantly, but take away some driving enjoyment.
An automatic (PDK in this case) doesn’t eliminate lag. The lag is caused by the turbo - until the exhaust pressure is high enough to spin the turbo and pump compressed air into the intake, it’s going to be laggy. Getting a good launch with a manual takes practice. The PDK wins 0-60 because of how fast it shifts - which no human can match.
I like this model more than the standard one, but I don't know if maybe it is too low.Thinking about the elevated zebra crossings, or the uneven parking entrances, I'm worried about hitting the bumper spoilers everywhere. Are those shorter springs a problem for common daily use?
It saddens me that the lightened version of Porsche's smallest sports car weighs over 1300kg. Every version of the 914 was under a ton, not to mention the 550 and 718, to which the Boxster is supposed to be a spiritual successor.
Well done, Al! Test drove a PDK 718 Boxster S recently. Gave it back thinking "Yeah, nice, but it would be better if it had a 6-cylinder (twin) turbo." Should I speak to RUF?
I’m sorry what? Alex you’re missing the point here I think. If you’re thinking ‘foot down time’ at any point in a car you’d shift down into an appropriate gear. 3rd gear at 20mph is never going to light up the tyres so stop being so unrealistic - see @4:28 Besides, who has ever longingly looked at that 30mph sign in the near distance and thought YES I can drive fast now.. This car is about using the gearbox and the engine revs where ever you are on the road.
Hmm. I like the cayman t but.. I think it's really just a value package with the ability to get bucket seats in NA anyway, and fabric door pulls. I wish that it was more club sport lightweight than it is. I get it's not a full GT4 type motorsports car, that is not it's core but I would have loved to see it be a bit more hardcore imo.
I'm impressed how this is no longer the Porche you buy when you can't afford a 911, but the Porche you buy if you actually love to drive ... too bad a) I don't have the money and b) I haven't got a license yet :(
I’ve hit a record 34.0 miles per gallon fuel efficiency during two recent flat-road 350 mile highway trips at a cruise of 75 mph in standard non-sport mode. In the US, the window sticker of a 2022 718 T reads “20 mpg city / 26 mpg highway.” Unless the car’s computer is false, the Cayman T will do well over the sticker mpg. After watching a dozen reviews of this vehicle, not one reviewer has mentioned fuel efficiency. Granted, fuel efficiency is probably not the reason someone purchases an internal combustion Porsche…but still ;)
Caroll Shelby himself said you cant really use more than 300 HP in the street....not and keep your license. This car is a perfect "road" car. It has power you can use and exploit and enjoy without going to jail. It is the one I would buy. And the one I know I would laugh out loud driving.
Close to the ultimate car. With straight pipes and a tune, hard to imagine anything could get better. The T4 is the best motor for these and punches well above its weight, and is better then the new gts 4.0.
I believe that the problem for Porsche and the whole 4 cylinders drama is that Boxster/Cayman become such a good car and so much Porsche that the need for 911 (at least for the majority of people) become less and less. It had the right size, the right sound, the right weight, the right balance, etc. and of course the right price - you have a true Porsche and still can buy a very well equiped VW Tiguan for a daily and family car. I'm a massive Porsche fan (actually I do believe that 911 GT3 is probably the bast car ever), but that offer is (well .. WAS) a very tempting one.
This is why, in my opinion, gas-electric hybrid drivetrains can be better than a turbocharged motor. They add torque across the whole rev range without compromising low-end performance. Really electric motors when used in a performance application can compliment a great naturally aspirated engine. The only drawback I assume would be added weight.
4 cylinder, no thanks! Having owned a few Porsche's the sound is half the fun of the ownership experience. Those 4 cylinder cars are for Porsche newbies only, a true Porsche enthusiast would never do it! Never!!!
Totally agree. Large majority will be new owners who have not experienced the glorious flag 6 on full song. Good, maybe even a great car, but completely spoiled by that awful sounding engine. Speed is not the be all and end all with a sports car, there is far more to it than that.
@@trumpet90909 All manufacturers are being forced by legislation to move to more 'efficient' engines, reduced cylinders, turbo, hybrid etc. but it doesn't follow that these engines give a better driving experience. Fast yes, but better? Nothing to do with living in the past and the engineers knowing what they are doing. Ask anyone (like me) who has driven them all. I think you will find most in favour of an NA 6 over a turbo 4...... but c'est la vie, we all know where we are headed and the engineers have to comply within the constraints set. The 4 pot turbo is also likely cheaper to produce so keeps the bean counters and investors happy with increased profits. Interesting that the 911 retains the 6 pot.....for now
People shouldn’t compare this with a 6 cylinder Porsche but think of it it as Porsche’s answer to the Alpine A110. But this car has a manual transmission and is more practical- suddenly it makes a lot of sense.
When I bought my first Porsche 20 years ago, I had the choice between a brand new Boxster and a "capricious old lady" used 911. I naturally chose the used 911, seemed brand new, and it was a driver delight. I was in the Alps, the Carrera 4 was an threat, sometimes I did snowboarding just to have the pleasure to drive to and get back, was as exciting as a snow black track. The Boxster and Cayman are now ready to be Porsche for drivers, with the 911 being impressive Luxury Gran Tourismo cars, the GTS then GT4 paved the way and now we have the T option to be an affordable driver's Porsche.
...I'm not a badge snob, I seek out driving enjoyment, I don't care for the glory, I live in the moment, I lament the fact that manuals gearboxes are going away but at the same time I went out and bought it with my own money. I make stuff, I celebrate cars, I go on a road trip just for the hell of it. I got one. "I need to be applauded !"...:)
here in switzerland if I spec the S to the same standard I'm paying around 17k more. that's quite a lot, and then you allready are getting a GTS 4.0 (w/o options ofc).

I wish that it was more club sport lightweight than it is. I get it's not a full GT4 type motorsports car, that is not it's core but I would have loved to see it be a bit more hardcore imo.
What means NA?

Awesome video Alex, hope to see you in the Jannarelly Design-1 soon.
I'm impressed how this is no longer the Porche you buy when you can't afford a 911, but the Porche you buy if you actually love to drive ... too bad a) I don't have the money and b) I haven't got a license yet :(
And c) You cant spell Porsche :)
@@soyabean911 oh hahahahaha nice one.
@@soyabean911 damn ...
Granted, fuel efficiency is probably not the reason someone purchases an internal combustion Porsche…but still ;)
4:40 ... 20 mph in 3rd gear? Yea, if I downshift to 2nd I have instant power. I've tried last night, I own a T.
The only guy why i watch carfection video
9:22 ampm $uicideboy$ But the tempo is slower in the song ? Did they edit it ?
Yay! Alex is Back
An amazing car and a design that is timeless.
I'd go for the T because you can spec the 918 seats, mega!
Thank you Alex, lovely review!
We want more Alex.... Mr Carfection!!!!
All the people winging about 6 cylinder engines - the people that aren't going to buy one anyway.
Alex strikes back
Caroll Shelby himself said you cant really use more than 300 HP in the street....not and keep your license.
I like what Porsche did with the 718 styling wise. It looks so good. Too bad they can't make the 2.0T sound good.
get the T and remap it, would cost about £700 max anyway, you'll essentially have a high spec Cayman S
I personally wouldn't really want the extra power the S offers. I still want to redline without going over the speed limit LOL.
Buy a Chevette; You'll be happy as a clam-
Alex!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh how much I've missed you
I believe that the problem for Porsche and the whole 4 cylinders drama is that Boxster/Cayman become such a good car and so much Porsche that the need for 911 (at least for the majority of people) become less and less.
The scenery reminds me of Northern California’s canyon and wine country roads.
Love seeing a proper manual still
4 cylinder, no thanks! Having owned a few Porsche's the sound is half the fun of the ownership experience. Those 4 cylinder cars are for Porsche newbies only, a true Porsche enthusiast would never do it! Never!!!
Why not? They are more efficient. I can imagine quite a few Porsche owners are all about efficiency.
I guess I’m just a newbie then. Oh, wait, are your cars water cooled? Then that makes you a n00b.
Totally agree. Large majority will be new owners who have not experienced the glorious flag 6 on full song. Good, maybe even a great car, but completely spoiled by that awful sounding engine. Speed is not the be all and end all with a sports car, there is far more to it than that.
I also like to live in the past, and I also like to pretend that expert Porsche engineers have no idea what they are doing!
Interesting that the 911 retains the 6 pot.....for now
300 horsepower, 'modest power.' I mean I get it, but it's still funny.
I feel like 10 years ago that would’ve been “ludicrous power” !!! Even my 2018 mustang some of my friend scoff at 310 HP and I’m like whaaaa
@@aircooledjoe1657 Not really. The Porsche 911 Carrera had 300 hp over 20 years ago, and it wasn't considered ludicrous at all.
300hp is now a Skoda Octavia wagon with a reflash. That's the reality.
Nice try. Have 350 hp in my little Tesla :)
@@norbertholzmann8653 ,but much more torque in tesla.
Glad to see you back, i came back to unsubscribe this channel but after seeing you back how can we do that. Just like your review style....
I can't wait for the future for one reason, no blank buttons.
Oh who am I kidding, that will never happen
I have to say that was a pretty decent review.
weirdly the T-model is heavier than the standard model by 15kg... 1335kg for the cayman and 1350kg for the cayman T
Ah! The magic of an Alex video for breakfast...
Yep, the Cayman T is perfect for me.
Im going for a nearly new S ..... I think it will be a good saving finding one with around 5 k on the clock !
Brilliant review.
Good review man
People shouldn’t compare this with a 6 cylinder Porsche but think of it it as Porsche’s answer to the Alpine A110. But this car has a manual transmission and is more practical- suddenly it makes a lot of sense.
Right, but then it makes even more sense to buy a 981.
my ExIGe weight in at 1050kg and still got a V6 in the back.
8:18 :)
Love Caymans. Brz was more my budget though
Hey man he is back.
here in switzerland if I spec the S to the same standard I'm paying around 17k more. that's quite a lot, and then you allready are getting a GTS 4.0 (w/o options ofc).
