One of the best snapshots of the British maritime system I have seen. All those jobs and ships. Some of the best years of my life were spent underway in the MN/RFA. Thanks for putting it out. I passed it on to a load of my seafaring mates.
What a treat! My maternal Grandfather was a Naval sailor who served on submarines, as was my elder brother. Going back on that side of the family we had one chap who was a Pilot on Barry Dock and another who died when he fell into a coal hold. How beautiful these ships were - even the most humble of them - like so many things, modern ways are less appealing, like all the identical container ships we have now.
Hard to imagine when Britain had a merchant and RN which actually had ships and sailors when nowadays they can't even prevent invasions by people in rubber dingies.
My Uncle was the commodore of the Blue Funnel line and brought one of those multi container ships across from Argenina via Far East, Africa and home to Liverpool, When he arrived he was summonded to London, where he was greeted with a chicken salad spread, many staff, and told he was no longer required :-)
Thank you for posting another great old film. Fascinating to get a glimpse of Old Portsmouth's Spice Island, with the old Coal Exchange and Still & West pubs in the background.
The world changed, as it always does. Technology, automation, trading patterns, trade itself - it all changes. I'm at sea myself since 1991. Oh and of course - out and out greed!
I enjoyed the video. I was at sea during the 60s & 70s so it brought back many memories. A great snap shot.
I was a Ganges lad 1962 my navy. Thank you.

I enjoyed watching the video.I come from a Navy Family.
Been there and done that... And bought the T shirt...
Big people on a little ocean. We do this not because it’s easy, but because we thought that it would be easy.
My grandad served from 39 to 46 RN think that was harder. I joined the merchant Navy ended up with a medal with a rosette. 1982.
My father served in rhe RN from 1939 until 1954. I joined the MN in the early 1970s and served on tankers with no airco in the Gulf during the summer.
A lovely piece of film. Any idea who made it or why ? Initially I thought it was a RN recruitment film but then it moved on.
What would these people think of the country today.
Not a great deal, 63-72.

Where did it all go wrong?
