Fascinating - my elder brother joined the Royal Navy as a 15 year old in 1967, when they still had the tot - and the birch! He began his career at HMS Ganges, Shotley Gate and served on the Leander Class frigate HMS Charybdis or the "Cherry B" as she was known. He then joined the Nuclear sub HMS Dreadnought. He was a spanner monkey, a job he was ideally suited for; never happier than when jammed in some dark, wet place with a stubborn job to tackle. RIP Richard "Taff" Moxham.
Crazy that I was still a baby here but went on to serve on HMS Resolution, Renown and the other R boats - they really had a long and successful life as a class
