    The development of the prototype started in 1989 and the first unit was ready for installation in the following year. The 1.5 MW unit, dubbed "Azipod" (short for azimuthing electric podded drive) was installed on the 1979-built Finnish fairway support vessel Seili at Hietalahti shipyard in Helsinki, Finland.

    So many aspects that require a calm seastate. How rough can it it get and still have full utility?
    Many great attributes as well.

    I notice a lot of footage showing Royal Navy Merlin and Wildcat helicopters. Hopefully this indicates a high level of interoperability between the nations' naval fleets, rather than poorly edited stock foootage inclusion

      The problem of the two BPC Class Mistral (amphibious helicopter carriers) ordered by Russia in 2010 for more than a billion euros was resolved when France cancelled the order following the annexation of Crimea and the Donbas war in 2014. But the most ironic thing, or rather hypocrite, is the UK reaction. The then PM, David Cameron and his indignation towards France, but that did not prevent the British authorities from continuing to sell to Russia, precision riffles, ammunition, bulletproof vests, military communications and night vision devices for an amount totalling around 132 million pounds (167 million euros). One rule for the goose, one for.... 😂😂😂

    • @Rob_F8F
      @Rob_F8F 13 дней назад +7

      The US didn't veto the deal as it is in no position to do so. It was Putin's seizure of Crimea that killed the deal.
      Putin's timing is, as always, impeccable. 😂😂😂

      @gidsinveenhuizenpuntnl Unlike every other NATO member, France does not rely on US technology. France has a very strong independent streak. France wants to be a counter weight to the US for European leadership. The US might veto the UK or Poland. The US definitely has no veto over French decision making.

      More or less. Both are LHDs and both classes can also perform as amphibious assault ships. However, the Canberra class is based on the Spanish Juan Carlos 1. The Canberra class is bigger with a higher tonnage of 27,500 T while the Mistral class has a maximum displacement of 21,500 T.

    The Mistrals are good modestly sized LPH/LPDs, though whether France was justified in building three to help Paris continue playing its fantasy "still a great global power" game instead of maintaining fully France's now hollowed out land forces, is another matter. Either way, we British, whose core national defence really does require a far bigger RN and RAF, should certainly NEVER agree instead to increase our land forces deployments to Europe while France, the defence of which does need 1st and foremost a bigger army, has actually cut back on key land capabilities.

    Huge ship, slow target that requires lots of protection from torpedoes and missiles during a "real" war. Does France have enough frigates, cruisers, and destroyers to defend this huge/slow target in a "real" war against China and/or Russia? If not, is this ship going to be limited to heavily defended task force operations with its NATO allies during a "real" war against China and/or Russia?

      You can't run a modern navy with Banlieue monkeys. But I do wonder what they plan to do in future, when the majority of the population has the IQ of the average "newcomer".
      I guess western europe simply becomes a 3rd world shithole and then having a good navy is the least of your problems.
