Yvette, I started playing guitar after hearing Eddie Van Halen play eruption back in 1979, I was 17 years old, It was almost unreal that guitar playing like that was even possible, after watching your videos I'm again amazed at what is possible on the guitar, your generation has takin the two handed playing style to a hole new level, it's so inspiring just to watch you do what you do, at 57 years old I'm not trying to play like you but it makes me try to do what I do to the extreme and stretch my playing to my limit a bit, thank you.
Second that!
Seems to be a lot about these new open tunings people are using now too
Yo I luv Eddie too man and math rock and a bunch of other stuff I know how u feel!👍
@@N.E.U.R.O but that’s the thing, these open tunings aren’t new. The more common use of them may be but these tunings have been around for generations. It’s what people are doing with them that’s so incredible and new. Kind of like seeing eruption and tapping for the first time.
You mention age a lot in your comment. What if nobody gave a shit about ages. Then would it matter?
I love how most of the bad comments got buried underneath comments complaining about the bad comments
They always do 😂
white-knight army
as always
Anton Björklund why are they white knights for defending a great guitarist? Is it because.... she’s a woman?
Wojtek Turski lol. Oh ok.
The way she does the tapping and the bass line at the same time blows my mind.
Jeff Sánchez Andrade there is this one guy called ichika and he is good at doing this as well
@@josh67fps good recommendation, that guy is very skilled too.
The bass is a separate track, there’s more than one guitar track as well. She’s amazing non the less though.
@@regortex3364 are you sure? I thought she was doing drums as well
@@ichasedacrow2 r/woooooooosh
Me after watching this: wow tapping actually doesn't look so hard maybe I'll give it another try!
Me after trying: crawls back in bed at noon, pulls blankets over head, calls it a day.
I am learning shabuya rn. Its going well but it is a PROCESS so ik how u feel rn
the true measure of mastery is making it look as though anyone can do it. yvette is truly one of the greatest open chord and finger tapping guitarists in the world.
Basic tapping is not that hard of a technique tbh
dude, i quit after the F chord.
may your fingers rest in peace.
I want her, Sarah Longfield and Tosin Abasi to play together and rip the fabric of space and time to send us to a new dimension.
That would be lovely
You mean to bring back David Bowie so he can stitch together the world post 2016? Lol
Add Tim Henson to that mix and you have mind-altering dimensions open up
And Nolly joins in
you sick fuck trying to kill all of us... i'm ready!
I always look to you for inspiration whenever I felt I've plateaued. You are a constant reminder there's still a mountain to climb.
Amen. Carry on
She just plugs into the Earth and it resonates for her :D
Haha what a great comment
Her guitar and her technique are so beautiful that this is the first time after watching the video like 4-5 times that I realized that she is not on the beach near a pier, it is a big empty lot with a derelict warehouse on the background... I was blinded without noticing it :p
Absolutely you Wright, now i see
I wouldn't even have known. Lmfaooo
Holy shirt I saw seas and water until I read this :0
Holy shit. Man, the power of music. Totally cast an illusion on us.
I have watched this multiple times and this was the first time i ever noticed that. I am always just mesmerized by her guitar and her technique, I never even looked at the background.
I like the shots where they mounted a GoPro to the head of her guit.....WAIT A MINUTE
Howwww
Play it two times... :/
You can actually see it pop into frame here and there in other shots.
Illuminati: stay were you are dont move
Brandon Shelton ?
Totally awesome vibe.
MattRach I see you matt!
MATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
OMG Matt ici, génial ahah
Holy shit matt's alive
Ah tiens, coucou mon gars !
I’m a percussionist but watching this girl play makes me want to learn guitar
Do it! Play both
Do it, that's how i was too
Do it, I actually am a thinking of learning percussion bc its cool as hell
@@kylehill9653 Yeah, and also, learning percussion is very accessible. A practice pad, a drum method book, and a pair of sticks will get you very far for only $50.
Makes me want to play drums to this tune!
The song is so complex that the guitar lost it's head over it.
That was a good one
Nice
hahahahahahahaha good one man!
Happens all the time, Per Nilsson plays these and they don't keep their head either.
Good one😂
I've seen her live and met her in person. She is great! Anyone who doubts her talent is an idiot. Not only does she write her own music but she is a solo artist and a band member. She even does all her own artwork and paints her guitars, not to mention merchandise. She can sing very well plus she can play pretty much any instrument out there. She's a God!👏👍❤ she is a sweet girl to and well cute.
And sexy as fuck.
Thank you for for that. Literally no one asked but thanks
'met her in prison' omg im going blind soon
@J D comments are ok. Assumptions are much more annoying
Aha! Very nice. Just had to scroll for the info I was looking for. This girl is a gem!
*Video:* Girl showcases god-tier skills with a guitar through a ~6min performance.
*80% of the comments:* She THICC.
It's t h i c c
But yea, I must admit that I lost my shit too 0:32
Honestly though, the same thing happens with male artists too. It's not just with women that it happens. I mean, how often do you hear women swooning over a musician for how he looks? Like, 80% of the modern stadium country is that way, for example.
Took a second to noticed because I was mesmerized by the playing but damn she thicc.
That 80% adds up to 1,394,114 of the 1,742,643 views as of today, 01/17/2019.
Yvette Young's new age performance is incredibly inspiring to me. While I deeply appreciate the legendary musicians, I find immense joy in discovering new artists who are carving their own path. Hearing her play the electric guitar for the first time was a captivating experience; her unique sound stands out vividly. I'm eagerly looking forward to exploring more of her music, as her distinctive style resonates with me deeply.
a friend of mine showed me this video back in freshman year of college and I thought it was sick as hell and now Im a senior and finally found it again to finally be able to sub to this channel
This is sooo dope!
LOL Kuma Films
Fucking ayyy Kuma Films, love your shit, prog music stuff would be an excellent display along with other content on your channel
Dope is so this
Wow, I’ve been playing guitar for 13 years.
Suddenly I feel like I don’t even know how to play the guitar.
Side note, this would fit perfect in Death Note or Ghost in the Shell.
The first time I heard Covet, I got major nostalgia from when I watched Death Note as a kid haha. It sounds so much like the OST
Death Note OST got me into math rock. I learned L's Theme first by ear and found lots of lovely oddities
@@treehann The Archetype ABASI ad compliments my love for Mello's theme to a 1000. Hands down.
Perfect deathnote song
Awesome music. This girl is unbelievable. I wish I had a tenth of her skills but I'm sure she's worked extremely hard to get to this level.
Nice composition too. Enjoyed the different time signatures
Such a beautiful harmony of tones I can't get enough of this kind of playing it's mesmerizing
I love how she combines right and tapping and fingerstyle, she shreds!
Whenever i'm losing inspiration playing, i always end up back listening to Yvette, your style is something else!
after a random recommendation to yvette's channel and a few dives into some Covet songs....
God DAMN, Her musical style is a gateway drug to math rock.
what's worse? i prefer her playthrough to the actual song. you can truly appreciate her sound here.
No offence but most playthroughs are still heavily mixed. This isn't the live audio by any means.
Check out her emgtv performance instead.
This is not math rock. More like prog metal ( Plini , Animals as Leaders, Intervals, Widek )
Is she in a band? And when do they go on tour so I can see her live
(Edit), the band is Covet. Time to absolutely fall in love with her band.
Did you get to see them live?
Oh, man, I thought your comment said “the band is Coven” when I first read it and I got really excited, lol, thinking she was working with Jinx Dawson!
@@ander6070 Unfortunately no ;-;, but once the pandemic lifts maybe one day!
@@miyamiya1726 I hope you get the chance, all of them are super talented and incredibly chill :)
She's part of Covet. Make a point to see them live, you will not be disappointed.
Rumour has it that Yvette has a phobia of picks
I think she is just very picky. x/
door's right there
and one for good looking clothes, too.
Snarejay what that outfit is fucking adorable
who needs picks of she has a finger of a goddess :p hahaha
I love how half the time she's not even paying attention to what she's doing. Wish I could play guitar a fraction of a percent of that good. Also her timing. Do metronomes set their time to her? Because that was tight.
What's hidden behind that is literally thousands of hours of practice
@@SoumilSahu across multiple instruments as well, at this point its basically second nature
@@SoumilSahu I am aware. My issue isn't that I've not put in the time. It's my hands are damaged. Nerve damage is a hell of a thing. I'm getting back to where I can play some! 90BPM fingerpicking is nice again. It's just very, very slow recovery.
I have always believed that great music could affect your mood and emotions taking you high, or dropping you low. It essentially paints a picture in sound. This piece can take the listener anywhere in time or space. Kudos to you and your band members. Your artistry as a musician and abilities as a composer mark you as one of the greats in my opinion. I look forward to hearing more from you in the future.
i see you headbanging on those clean chords 😁😋
kodiak wild Have you seen Chon's live shows? People headbang to that. The audience also headbanged to Jon Gomm's Passionflower at UK Tech Fest. :)
haven't gotten too far into chon at this point. i've seen headbanging to cleans ( & even to music that isn't "metal" ), i just always find it funny.
kodiak wild It is. But when you get to feel the music, sometimes you can't help but headbang to everything.
i agree. its more of a visual thing for the crowds i guess
it was low key distorted tho..
Her guitar skills are obviously amazing, but this is also a fantastic composition.
To this day, I am super impressed by your guitar skills, Yvette. It is simply amazing watching you play!
I do not like the music personally, but I can't get enough of the passion you so obviously have for the music you are making Yvette, from the way you sway your body to the odd rythms to the infectious smile that never leaves your face. True musicianship isn't measured in success or knowledge but in the passion of the soul, this is rare and it's a gift, don't ever let anyone take that away from you.
Sounds like a song to be nostalgic over. This is one that would’ve taken over my summer as a teen.
I'm in love with her, and her band, and this entire genre of music. It reminds me of The Fall Of Troy just without any vocals
I’m pretty sure what she’s playing is math rock and the fall of Troy is mathcore so I guess that explains it kinda
@@jg-qi1xvstereotypical
This is so fucking inspiring. As a woman who’s just starting to get serious about my own guitar journey, I love being able to see a woman not just have the technical ability, but the creativity to write stuff as insane as this. I want to know theory well enough to be able to write something as complex as this one day. Also screw all the people talking about her appearance. She is killing it and that’s all people can focus on 🙄
I can't imagine what your gender has to do with playing a guitar. It's not relevant unless you try to make it about that. Just play - noone cares what you've got in your undies!
This song changed my entire sonic journey when I first heard it. Still a banger 🎶🎼🎶
Watching someone do something they love with a smile on their face warms my heart and inspires me to practice more 😀

No matter how many times I hear this it still sounds amazing.
I have watched and listened to many musicians who are all amazing players in this genre but, there is something about your approach that stands out to me. The way you incorporate at times, unexpected progressions and yet they sound as if, this is exactly where they had to be.., I get lost in watching you play. Amazing.
Yvette I found your channel years and years ago. Maybe around 2008?? Who knows. I saw that you had wicked skill at guitar but I didn't really check out your music. I admired your consistent output as well, but I didn't really pay attention.
Flash forward to 2017, and I'm staying up late for a no reason and playing some Starcraft. I alt-tab out to put another song on and youtube isnt' really giving me something I want to click on. I see this song. What the hell, I click.
man... I was completely blown away. this song is wonderful, the soundscapes, the time signatures, the drumming, the bass tone, the tasteful multitracking etc. wonderful stuff.
I always figured I'd get into your music some day. Now I feel that I was taking it for granted that there are people in this world as talented as you are, as driven, etc, and that you are still out there plugging away.I really appreciate the fact that you never stopped.
Keep on truckin! I'll try to check your show out next time you're in norcal.
1 Million Views!
Congrats Yvette!
So I heard her name from a friend and was blown away by this song...then realized I already had Covet's albums downloaded and that's why I like her work so much (insert laughing face). Genuinely, what an amazing talent.
The secret to her tone is the overalls. Now you know

I was wondering whats with all the terrible comments then i noticed someone asking who else came from reddit and it all makes sense now
Yeah cause Reddit is more cancerous than RUclips.
The difference between Reddit and RUclips is, Reddit knows it's horrible. Now watch as I thumb up my own comment.
Its reddit, the incel hideout. Are you really surprised?
Reddit has cancerous communities but also very good ones. RUclips on the other hand has a constant and homogeneous cringe comment section
@@guidoferri8683 Believe me, RUclips comments can be great, and it depends almost solely on what you watch, it's the same as with Reddit
Can you play wonder wall?
Name fits
Perhaps a medley with Smells Like Teen Spirit and Smoke On The Water.
Green Bean Sex Machine ohhh. Ya. Those are extremely underplayed songs.
@@yeeturmcbeetur8197 Well, all three songs are extremely technical, complicated compositions. Very few people alive have reached that level of skill. I believe THIS young woman has the chops.
I mean, the overkill use of this uneeded guitar is proof.
Look up Ghosts and Vodka if unfamiliar. It sounds quite similar, but they used standard gear. More fluid, less "proggy". I think nu-goobers call it "math rock". Back then we called them skilled dudes playing instrumental music.
Math rock. 5+5 = 8====D~~~

You know she's next level when you've been amazed just by her riff videos and then come to listen to a full on track. And the riffs from her alone could seriously qualify as singles
You play the guitar like a stringed piano.
It's so cool lol.
I can't even fathom how to begin learning such a technique.
Dope
All pianos are stringed pianos.
It’s called tapping. You just hit the fret you want to play, without picking. It’s not as loud but you can use a compressor pedal to make it louder without adding too much noise.
However it can get hard. Example of hard tapping to do: this song
Yeah.... its obvious she learned this way --- but HOW..?
@@csnide6702 If I'm not mistaken she has a piano background and moved to guitar.
And I believe trying to mimic the way piano is played, eventually led to this unique style.
If you like this listen to song called awaken by ichika nito
Shes returned... goood.....
She plays that guitar like someone plays a piano???
sueycoo it’s a technique known as tapping. It’s pretty easy to learn how to do it at first, but the shit she’s doing is incredibly advanced.
she is a pianist after all
She is??? Lol after a month of listening to the stuff covet makes, never knew bout that.
Bryce Barretto yeah she plays violin as well, crazy talented
@@brycebarretto4287 lol funnily enough, she's better at piano and violin than she is at guitar XD
I still find myself coming back to listen to this almost everyday, music is truly a wonderful thing.

The music, musician and guitar are all definitions of perfect and beautiful.

Idk about you guys, I just know that I love Covet! Have a nice life, peeps!
After picking up my lower jaw from this dusty room's floor, I am imagining what an instrumental performance which features the exceptional Yvette Young and the loved Tony Levin (the Chapman stick bass player of King Crimson) would sound like. If that duet were to happen, my little brain would catch fire and dissolve from the breathtaking stimuli! Yvette and the musicians of Covet are ferocious! 💞🌻
Talent crushing so hard right now.

one of the best math rock songs ever?
I don't like that term, and there was no singing in this, but I agree it is a great piece of music.
wait can anyone verify its math rock. or just syncopated.
TheAlbinoskunk I don't think it needs any singing to be math rock. There are a whole bunch of beautiful instrumental math rock bands
Most math rock is instrumental honestly. Lol. And, whether or not you like that term, it exists, as well as many bands that classify themselves as math rock bands.

Everyone keeps talking about the bad comments on this video but i couldnt find any.
Then maybe you are the bad comment
@@tinyrobot9989 🤣🤣
Because RUclips now sorts comments algorithmically based on how recent/how many likes and replies it gets. So there probably were a bunch of harsh critics liking each other, and then everyone else came and commented about how wrong the comments are, which buried all the negative comments due to being more recent and more liked.
Its all soy boy white knights defendin her "honor". Cringy, really
That's how it usually goes. Maybe one guy left an over the top comment in amongst a couple others complimenting her, people jump on it to virtue signal.
