Ok so when are they gonna put these in the new york subways?
We need this. Not the shitty ones they added in Jamaica, Queens.
When will every transit system in the world install these?
I rode four stops just this week on BART in SF and watched three different people jump the gates. I would point out how all three fit a certain stereotype but that would probably get me in trouble, you can guess. Please fit these gates at all station and quickly.
Sooo, are you saying we should just ban them all? Or install skin color detection cameras?
Whats your solution? @kohort1
Evading the fare is Reparations!!!! Everybody owes them everything because… well I don’t actually know but I think it has something to do with cotton
@@philmccracken179 You cheeky monkey! ;)
Why do you care. Do you have nothing better going on in your life. Your worried about someone riding a train
They should have double gate (front and behind, with some ample space for small luggage..) so that bad actors can't sneak in while the door is open...
That would be full proof, but too expensive. Might be best if they had a yellow line behind them and use cameras to detect if someone is behind them and not open the door until they clear the area. Also, put thin bollards between each terminal so someone can’t move left to right and sneak in.
That would actually be very interesting to see. Kinda reminds me of the E gates in LHR and also Cancun
Good, fare evasion leads to more fare evasion because people will see that and think "why should I have to pay?". Plus you stop fare evaders you are stopping a lot of potential criminal behavior and/or nuisances on trains, e.g. homeless people are probably not going to spend a fare to ride off a high on a train.
Totally agree.
1:14 id love to see the sales average from 2022-2023 and then 2025-2026 with the gates and see if the 15-25mil a year was actually accurate
As a tourist I found the BART trains perfectly fine. However, I did try to ride in the first couple of cars rather than at the end of the train because I'd read comments saying that was a wise thing to do! What I did notice was a LOT of fare evaders.
I could care less about fare evasion *by itself*, in a higher trust society we would just publicly fund the system like we do roads, but ridership must increase in order to keep BART afloat and enable future expansions and such ridership increases will *never* happen unless fare evasion is reduced as a means of reducing crime on the system.
Good. It’s working
Well there are also other ways, like I’ve seen folks jump the fence outside the bayfair station below the platform and climb up the emergency exit directly onto the platform.
It can't come soon enough.
we have to have gates on everything, even toothpaste. we can't bring anything in our cars. STOP THIS! put these people in jail!!!!!!!
they do this all over japan
As long as the stolen goods cost less than $10,000, then they're good.
The one thing I noticed about the gates is on the top of the bar entrance sign there’s spikes on top of them
They should install them at McArthur BART station too. I've noticed that out of 10 people, 2 skip paying.
They will eventually install them on all stations, they just used the West Oakland stop as a test ground so they can figure out which design they want and what potential problems there may be, unlike NYC with their new fare gates which stay open for a huge amount of time and allow a ton of people to walk right through.
I don’t pay myself and still won’t pay until they make prices reasonable again. And no, $14 each way is not reasonable.
@@crowpvpgod4537 Guess you will eventually just not ride, because prices won't be coming down. And no, you are not paying $14 each way unless you are going from the end of the line in San Jose to SFO or airport to airport, any other stop is not $14 each way, even San Jose to Millbrae is cheaper on BART than it is on CalTrain.
@@crowpvpgod4537. 👍. Keep up the good work 👏
Keep’n it real in the snowflake state 👌☝️
@@crowpvpgod4537 then you have zero right to use any Bart station
I wonder when an event offers that requires evacuation if these would impede safety.
small price to pay 😈
These open automatically in emergencies. They're rated as emergency gates so they won't even have emergency exits anymore.
Where? Never seen a single one in the system yet. Instead of installing fare gates how about having fare inspectors in EVERY TRAIN that repeatedly walks the train checking fares. ENFORCING IT most of all. If you really want to make people pay, start denying those who refuse.
The problem is that it's not technically a crime. They get a citation, but there's nothing to really enforce it.
ITS ANOUT TIME!!!!!!!!!
BART needs to be more reasonable with the fares, I see college students having to pay $13 round trip just to get to school and Clipper START only goes by the federal poverty line and not California’s
How about working cameras and a police presence?
Obviously its a lower cost than an army of cops handing out fines no one will pay.
This is more effective. Bart already has its transit police
How about having a police officer there to arrest those who don’t pay?
Ummm because this is america not north korea boot camp. Why would u go to jail for not paying for a 1.75$ subway card. People are rediculous. Its not even a misdemeanor its a infraction why waste their time for something stupid. At the end of the day people need to get home
@@jayo9750 not jail time, but rather community service, because there should be penalties to crime. You woke are so strange.
@@drewbryant5171 ummm thats why the ticket is already 75-100$ and it goes on your record. Sounds pretty costly already considering a fare is only about 2$.
@@drewbryant5171 you conservatives are so strange. You feel the need to have a armed guard at every gate 24/7 to make u feel safe to ride public transit. Its really not that serious.
@@jayo9750 and no one pays it because there are no penalties. They don’t prosecute crimes and you think that a ticket goes on a permanent record
The new gates at West Oakland DO NOT STOP freeloaders.... I walked through one this past week w my bike.... and some rando guy slipped right in behind me w/o paying, quite easily. I halfheartedly tried to stop him...but no dice... I hate the enormous waste of money to install gates that fail to do what they are supposed to do...
So go cry about it some more. Why would u try and stop someone you dont even work for bart
@@jayo9750we found one
@jayo9750 Because the assholes that evade the fare are NOT so entitled that they are exempt from paying the fare, meanwhile driving up the cost of ridership for the people that DON'T fare evade.
@@Markjenson1894 not true. Bart is funded by taxes. Theres no way fares can pay for all that electricity and all those salaries. You have the same choice to not pay as they do but you would prefer not to take the risk to get a ticket or record and their willing to take that risk. Attempting to stop people is dangerous i wouldnt want to get assaulted over it.
@@jayo9750 Bart is *partially* funded by taxes and *partially* funded by fares. If bart loses revenue via fares, then it needs to raise the price of those fares for the people that DO pay the fare. That is inexcusable for the fare payers. If bart was 100% funded by taxes, it would be free for riders.
How about making fares more affordable? BART charges over $10 to get off at SFO!!
BART is cheaper than other regional rail systems. They all cost about the same for regional travel. If you want subway fares then take a subway. BART isn't one.
Actually, it's not "cheaper than other regional rail systems". And it IS "subway". Quit with the smartass rebukes.
@@ReviewedByMikey Dude, what are you talking about? BART's longest line is the same length as the second longest line of the LIRR. It's 63 miles long! The total area that BART covers is about the size of half of a Netherlands.
That's not how subways/metros work! BART is very very very souped-up commuter rail. Internationally, this kind of a service is called an S-bahn. That's what BART is, and S-bahn/regional rail.
It doesn't matter. This isn't the Neverlands.
@@m081113 BART covers an area as large as a midsize EU country. It physically cannot be a subway. It's an S-bahn. S-bahns have much higher operating costs and can't charge as low as a local subway.
This is just a fact of life whether you like it or not.
police won't chase criminals, but they do fine people look normal, but never do citation for people looks dangerous. They never stop. Why do they want to risk their life to stop crime
Hi, my local station in Sydney only has Tap and go no barriers only the bigger stations have barriers very similar to what Bart used to use not sure the level of their Fair evasion?, I know myself I have not had my Opal card checked by the inspectors for a very long time.
An ok start, but the best way to stop a jumper is the trap gate. You go in, the door closes behind you but there is a door in front of you. You are trapped. The only way for the door ahead of you to open is for the one behind you to close completely and lock, then the door ahead opens. You could even have it so the card scanner is in the trap area, which means if you entered without the means to pay your fare(like a jumper), you just played yourself and now have to wait for the cops to assist.
So basically bart is about to raise prices like crazy !!!! …GOT IT
$90 mil to install these gates on about 8 stations? Are these gates made of gold?
$90 million to install a 800 fare gates at 50 stations, plus the software, the maintenance contract with the manufacturer, insurance, etc.
why should it take till 2025? It should be done all in 1 month
Good. But the real reason is to get the scofflaws off BART so paying riders feel safer.
Which really dosent matter because anyone can put together 2$ to enter the system. Its not gonna make it some elite service
Tell me more about this "cultural thing"
Law-abiding Poors hold the bay together, do the wagie jobs, bagging groceries and delivering food and whatnot. When they see the criminal underclass living the easy life without consequences for breaking the law many rightfully feel like suckers. Its a "cultural thang" that develops in a permissive low trust society.
@@airron5019 We are a low-trust society, that's for damn sure.
@@airron5019 thats their fault for not having the balls to do it themself. They have the choice to do it but they dont. Why worry about the next man. Make ur own decisions and mind your business you dont work for bart so who cares
0:07 um, what did she just call me?
You can walk behind someone fast
No Data??
They do not have data on the exact number of potential fare jumpers that have been diverted by the new fare gates.
BART keeps video surveillance footage private for fear of stirring up racism.
Now I must find a way to hack these 🤣
I'm sure you'd be so proud to present your loser card for all the world to see.🤣
They should let the fair jumpers board for free because they are probably poor and struggling to improve their circumstances.
There’s a discount program for low income people. No excuse for many cheaters.
I wonder if these gates will help at all. Assuming that it's mostly the fare evaders causing trouble - it would be nice if I didn't inhale cigarette smoke, smoke from marijuana, or worse the next time I'm riding the BART train.
What' the demographics of the toll evaders? Oakland?
I agree this is a race issue. Unfortunately, America is an emasculated society where people cannot talk about race in some contexts
Mostly SF where all the riders are.
How about a gate for the janitor getting paid $300K/year?
They are raising fare prices again to pay the janitor 400k/yr😅
Like nyc they going to have 5 people going at the same time
These are racist gates. 😅
90 million omg just enforce some laws
why is there such a gap at the bottom I would just crawl through but I don't use the bart. I don't intent to evade the fare.
I'm surprised there was no racism protests with the first gates installed in West Oakland. 😂
Your-ignorance is glaring, people from all demographics evade. This has nothing to do with race.
Lol, why would there be protests about racism and BART gates? Most people I see fare evading are white teenagers.
Instead they should create free riding passes for all low income and homeless. Like with everything else, Newsome is taking California in the wrong direction with regard to compassion and inclusion
There are 50 percent discount programs for low income.
90milli project with one flaw, they can crawl straight through from the bottom, what a waste!
BART, the most costly and inefficient public transit system in the world.
Nonsense. BART is 70-80% funded by fares compared to 10-20% for the NYC Subway or the Paris Metro. It's an incredibly cost-effective system compared to its peers.
~ Its a cultural Thang ...
How about a metal detector and security check. I guess they don't care as long as the addicts, criminals and homeless pay their fares.
Its public transit not a luxury limo red carpet service. U got a problem with the public then drive your car
Should be completed by the end of this year (2024) the rest of the money can be spent on the expansion into San Jose or further than San Jose, Y loop into San Jose, should extend our or build a light rail system transit into Gilroy CA instead of looping to Santa Clara Caltrain' station
I guess to them, its cheaper in the long run to install long gates than to hire ppl to screen riders before entering the platforms.
They hired fare inspectors too. And now the cops are also patrolling the trains which is not something that they used to do. BART is improving.
Need fare enforcement, like Amtrak does, but of course it won't get that far since metro riding is way cheaper.
They have fare inspectors. They introduced them a few years back.
@@TohaBgood2it's not a crime. So all you get is a citation. No way to enforce it.
@@Thegoldenchild415 Yet they are literally enforcing it every day.
The fare inspectors give you tickets that are harder to enforce against, but you're not getting out of a ticket if a BART cop issues it.
😂🤣😂🤣 it isn't effective 😂🤣😂🤣 "they didn't have data" waste of tax payer money
