  • This is an advanced segmentation piece. If you are just starting out with segmentation, pick something with fewer than 20 cuts. I have another segmentation video with birds that is a bit less involved that you may want to check out. Happy scroll sawing!

Thank you for this video. My wife loves humming birds, so I will have to try this for her.

Segmentation is on my bucket list, but I have let found time to get around to it. Your hummingbirds look fantastic! I really like the contrast of wood. I enjoyed your show very much. Thanks for taking the time to do it! Take care!

This is a great project. I used to do this with high my school students in Tech Ed. We did the hummingbird and a deer. It’s called “Intarsia”. After you have your pattern glued on, cut the whole thing out like a puzzle. Attack it one segment at a time. Sand the edges of each piece (round over) before you glue them together. Looks softer and more realistic.

Thanks for watching. I took a class with Judy Gail Roberts for intarsia and this isn’t quite an intarsia, but close. I would consider rounding the edges if it were a little thicker wood. I bet your high school students enjoyed their project.

Congratulation, you can do the same thing with 0,6 mm. wood. It is more difficult to make the package and you have to use very fine Scrollsaw blades. Your wonderful work.

Hi Susan- Great video! Very helpful and informative. Have you ever taped the bird segments together with painter's tape. I find this holds very well with minimum fuss. Keep up the good work. I appreciate your contributions.

I do use painters tape for many things. I might give it a try next time. Thanks for watching.

Great project and I really appreciated all the good tips. You moved along at a perfect pace and didn't talk down to your audience.
Since we cannot get this pattern, could you add the pdf to your link or just hold it up straight to the camera, so we could do a print screen and print it out ourselves?

I wish I could share the picture but I believe it is an infringement of copywrite laws. The book I have is from Better Homes and Gardens, The Best of Wood book 2. If you can not find it, I did discover some free patterns online under stained glass hummingbird patterns that are fairly close to what I have. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Hi Susan-What would be helpful to me and probably your audience is to mention specifics; i.e. sandpaper grits, scroll saw blade sizes, speed of scroll saw, like 1-5, slower is better unless faster is best, plus links to good double sided tape, preferred poly manufacturers, stuff like that. Also links to supplies would be helpful. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to get it into more specifics from now on.

Good day, What size blade for this project ?

I use a Pegas MGT 5. You could use anything for me 3 to 7. If you go with a three, you may have to change blades more often.
