- Castlevania Month: Week 2!
Never thought I'd do a music countdown, huh? Well, Castlevania has so many awesome themes, it would be a shame if they got left unrecognized....even though there are plenty...of those lists...already...eh, whatever. I'm still posting this list. Because these are my favorite themes in the Castlevania franchise.
Yo, DJ R3ap3r! Slap some vinyl on the needle, m8!

Clock tower from Aria of Sorrow also is realy good.
one of the best
*really
I'm a bit disappointed "An Empty Tome" isn't on here, but hey, opinions.
...DANCE OF ILLUSIONS WAS NOT ON THIS LIST
thank god
My favourite version of Dance of Illusions was the Dawn of Sorrow one. :)
@@DarkMirria1 By Far
Happy that someone else appreciates Aeon and Castlevania : Judgment :D That look and that Scissors-Sword-Clock are just too damn awesome ^^
+Shiki Ren "Right on time."
+The Quarter Guy I like the fact the day before i watched this i just beat symphony of the night
And he's the only Castlevania character to use puns regularly.

Simons theme is also called Dance of the Holy Man, and yes it is my favorite Castlevania song too. :D
One of my favorite music theme to the Castlevania series is the Dance of Illusions. Because, it was played in the Rondo of Blood, Dracula X, Symphony of the Night, Dracula X Chronicles, Castlevania 64, and Legacy of Darkness. Plus, it's one heck of battle song.
oh god...I was hoping Vampire Killer would be #1.
Me too. It defenetly should be
Festival of Servants/Horde's Festival, The Tragic Prince/Pitiful Scion, The Wolf Revealed, Aquarius, and Slash are my favorites.
Meh, I prefer beginning from Castlevania III, but, ya know, preferences.
Me too actually.
I also liked the song before Simon's theme when you fight Dracula in Super Castlevania IV
who else is here after the smash reveal?
All EXCELLENT choices! And as a guy who got into the series BECAUSE of themes like these in the first place, I can say this is one of your best countdowns yet! Can't wait for the next one!
Treasury room from Castlevania IV is awesome, Wood Carving Partita and The Tragic Prince from SotN too
Nice list! Picking only ten tracks out of such a huge collection of amazing music had to have been difficult. Here are a few off the top of my head that I am super keen on:
Castlevania III: Mad Forest
Castlevania IV: The Cave
SOTN: Tragic Prince
Order of Ecclesia: An Empty Tome
1) Yeah, when Vampire Killer was an honorable mention, I figured it would be that.
I think I like the theme of Simon from portrait of ruin better than the original. That added heart beat just adds something about it
Albus theme is beautiful
Super Castlevania 4 is my favorite out of the series and I pretty thankful for ur number 1
watching these vids takes me back to the time when avgn was doing his castlevania vids. Was good times lol.
Great countdown! As for me BLOODY TEARS is my #1. It induces the flight or fight response...AND I WANNA FIGHT!!!
Gotta say, this was really good for your first music countdown and there were some good tracks on here. Really enjoying Castlevania Month, QG! :D
Yeah. Looking back however. The crackles and other stuff that I can hear during the #9 entry are very distracting.
Midway through the countdown I get an ad... Of someone playing Vampire Killer on various instruments. As much as I dislike ads interrupting things, well played RUclips.
Heart of Fire (the original one), Cross Your Heart, Bloody Tears, Aquarius, Flashback, Iron Blue Intention, Opposing Bloodlines, Slash, Awake, Castle Corridor, and Scarlet Battle Soul are some of my favorites
Finally someone shows some love to Awake! (I once watched a Top 100 castlevania themes on another channel and was really disappointed the first area theme of my first metroidvania wasn't on the list.)
damm, i was expecting dance of illusions, anyways good list.
Castlevania: Judgment's "Vampire Killer" is my #1 pick, and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest's "Bloody Tears" is also my #2. But its always awesome to hear what others like more!
Pretty awesome list. One of my favorite themes is Festival of Servants from SotN. Right off the bat the guitar riff lets you know the boss doesn't plan on messing around, and the fast pace keeps the energy going for the entirety of the fight. Really helps set the stage, even against Slogra and Gaibon. They're not exactly pushovers the very first time you fight them after all, and Festival of Servants makes that very clear.
Everyone always forgets about New Messiah.
+KuroNoTenno I know! Very underrated track. I'm guessing it's because the gameboy games aren't really among the most popular of the series.
Living Myth And yet, they have some awesome music there.
KuroNoTenno whare wa messiah nari,hahahaha!!!
Oww, what a groovy set of tracks~
My favourites seem to match up with yours exactly, with the one exception being our #1 choices: I would place Castlevania 3's main theme instead of Simon's.
We almost have identical taste-!!
This is a type of music countdown I like. No wonder you and Green Scorpion are some of my favorite countdown makers alongside people like Joshscorcher. Also I'm sure Josh can teach you how to play the organ.
Dully agreed on #1. Still gives me goosebumps to this day.
No Illusionary Song????? What is wrong with you???? Literally have goosebumps every time i hear the Dawn of Sorrow version......
10:06 Thats My JAM!!!!!!!!!!
respect.. but you left out all the masterpieces from SOTN
Your voice is sound familiar, have you been ever featured in RUclips React channel ?
BTW it’s interesting list you got there
Did you ever listen to the version of Simon's Theme that was included in Portait of Ruin? It's probably my favorite rendition of that song.
Lost painting (inverted Castle theme deserved first place 😢
Awesome Quartarguy I think Simons theme is the best theme in castlevania too!!!
Perfect choice for #1 spot
I think the theme on the Final Stage of Castlevania Chronicles Arrange Mode is really epic
Quarter guy, no mention of Dance of Illusions? That was the first song that truly wowed me in SOTN, and really, any Castlevania game.
Julius is a man who is not fooling around... but he is holding back.
simon looks like he just woke up and his theme does too but wait he can still kick butt!
I knew it, it was Simon's Quest, it popped on my head later. I was nervous from thinking of number one.
Agree 100% about Simon Belmonths theme. Especially at the end of the game. It's so inspiring and gets you going for that final push against Dracula
My favorite theme is Richter Theme of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood version.
It's feel so "save the people and be brave".
The first music countdown of QG and a complete success!
Picture Of A Ghost Ship from Rondo Of Blood is my favourite. So much groove for a Castlevania tune.
I was shocked his top one didn't have something to do with Soma Cruz. I thought it would've been his favorite theme. I can't believe I actually share an opinion with someone! Nothing came close to hearing that awesome piece play in the first level.
Alright! I've been waiting for this one ever since the month started! Here we go!
#10: Not a bad start at all. In all honesty, I usually forget this entire soundtrack, because it's like you said. Not a huge fan of the Sega Genesis sound-font. It's good, though.
#9: Again, good. I personally prefer "House of Sacred Remains" from the game, but this was also a good theme. It's a very good fit for such a beautifully-written character.
#8: I was conflicted between this one and "Picture of a Ghost Ship." I love both themes. And even though the latter is my personal favorite, I love this track so very much. I do agree with you though that this version sounds *way* better than the updated one. I actually thought you put your finger on it pretty well. The problem with the updated version is that it sounds too watery. Not good, especially when a village is on fire!
#7: HELL YES! I lean more towards the remake from HD, but HELL YES!
#6: Eh. Not one that stands out very well to me, but it's well-composed.
...yeah, I'm sorry if I sound like I'm not the biggest fan of Judgement.
#5: WOOT WOOT! So happy to hear this one on here! God, I love this track!
#4: Good choice! If anyone has seen my list, you'll know which track I choose from this game, but I very much loved a lot of the remakes from this game. This one's great.
#3: It's really more like one of my favorite organ themes, but yes! Excellent track!
*...but it really should have been played during the SECOND phase.* -_-
#2: Really!? Wow. I'm surprised this one's so high on your list. Great, though!
#1: DAMN STRAIGHT! MY FAVORITE TRACK, TOO! DAMN STRAIGHT!
Excellent job! Aside from one "Eh." on the list, this was very well done!
All my yes to the number 1 theme!!!
This was a well done list, QG. Maybe for your next music countdown, how about your Top 10 Dr. Wily themes? :P
I feel like Beginning from Dawn Of Sorrow should be 1st or at least a honorable mention.
"Battle of the Holy" from Castlevania: The Adventure (original Game Boy title) should have been an honorable mention here.
I love Sorrow's Distortion so much.
Only now have I realized that Adam made a reference to fucking Phantom Blood during the Bloody Tears segment...
goddammit, Adam.
I don’t get it but whenever I hear the word brother it sends chills down my spine
Invitation of a crazed moon is actually my favorite
And Bloody Tears returned in epic fashion in season 2 of the Castlevania anime on Netflix.
My personal favorite has always been Lost Painting. It's one of my favorite music pieces of all time. Kinda sad it's not on the list, but hey, to each there own.
YAY SOMEONE MENTIONS HARMONY OF DESPAIR!!! Goddamn it's like that game doesn't exist or something.
+Darkcelestrian I'll admit I enjoyed it, even though I could never find anyone to play it with.
+The Quarter Guy Tried playing it with my brother, he didn't like it. Especially since we played on the PS3 locally. At least the DLC for it was awesome. Fuma is still my driving force character.
***** If they were to put it on ps4 and xbox one with a few enhancements it could get popular again.
Darkcelestrian Given Konami's current reputation? I doubt that.
***** Yeah..sad life for some video games right now.
Hell yes! Some really awesome retro and not-so-retro themes here. You should do music countdowns more often.
On an unrelated note, how does a game series end up with a month/week? Do people just decide or does it have to do with a game's release, or something like that?
One of my favorite music theme to the Castlevania series is the Dance of Illusions. Because, it was played in the Rondo of Blood, Dracula X, Symphony of the Night, Dracula X Chronicles, Castlevania 64, and Legacy of Darkness. Plus, it's one heck of battle song that I can relate to.
I would have placed Vampire Killer at number 1 myself, the original and updated version for judgement is just exquisite.
I really enjoy the Bass Track in Moon Fight from Castlevania Chronicles. Original Sin is another treat to the ears due to it being a power-heavy tune. I also love Circle of the Moons Aquarius, since it is played on a different key and is an extended version as well
Bloody tears is an iconic one
Hell yeah Stage 4 Castlevania Bloodlines! I have that on iPod
I’m personally surprised beginning wasn’t anywhere in the video
There's a mix up on the digital copy of the OST, #3 is labelled last as Metamorphosis into Abyss.
Now I know what songs D3athcritic uses in his intros
100% agree with #1
Too few people mention Proof of Blood from Circle of the Moon, that last boos music is one of the most epic of the series !
Oh ho thanks for the name. Loved this song but I forgot all about it because it'd been so long. Played this game as a kid apparently it's supposed to be one of the harder ones after the real OG ones lol.
Thank you for mentioning Sorrow's Distortion, your sentiments on the song match mine to a T! That song never seems to get any love.
10. A brilliant choice to represent Yamane-san’s first ever Castlevania game. I always loved “Iron Blue Intention”, especially the Portrait of Ruin arrange. No joke, I legit CRIED when I first made my way to 13th Street. And it only makes sense, given PoR is the direct sequel to Bloodlines.
09. Ah, “Lament of Innocence”. A true classic that perfectly symbolizes Leon’s anger and grief, knowing that while he lost his beloved forever, she will still be by his side and that of his clan as the literal soul of the Vampire Killer, much like Fi in Skyward Sword. The callback to Dracula’s theme from Super Castlevania IV is a nice touch too. And it got an amazing remix in Smash Ultimate by ACE!
08. “Divine Bloodlines”. I love it in all its forms, whether it’s the original, the DXC remix, the darker SotN arrangement, and yes, even this version from Vampire’s Kiss. I think my favorite version is actually from, of all things, the PACHISLOT GAME.
07. Julius. Fucking. Belmont. What else needs to be said, other than “Heart of Fire” being a great fusion of the OG theme from Castlevania 1 and “Don’t Wait Until Night” from Haunted Castle. A worthy musical leitmotif for the strongest Belmont of all. If we ever had a 1999 game, I think Julius would have gotten remix of THIS remix as well.
06. I also love Aeon. And I love “Darkness of Fear” too, both his standard leitmotif and his “boss” version when you fight him in the Clock Tower before facing the Time Reaper. A fitting theme for our time lord.
05. Poor Albus, you truly deserved better. I can only wonder what could have been had he been fought WITHOUT being overwhelmed by Dominus. He really would have cut loose. And I agree, “Sorrow’s Distortion” suits him perfectly.
04. Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes, first of his name, scion of the Demon Castle, heir to a dark legacy yet defies it with everything he’s got. And “Castle Dracula” is perfectly suited to Alucard. Honorable mention should go to the Judgement remix.
03. Best. Dracula. Theme. Ever. A true masterpiece by Yamane-san. And a worthy offering to the goddamned bathead.
02. My personal favorite version of “Bloody Tears”, for the record, is the Super Castlevania IV version. It is a PERFECT Clock Tower theme. If not that, then the Judgement remix.
Nothing but love for the honorable mentions.
01. My absolute favorite Castlevania theme of all time. And that will never change. It is perfection. Every version of it is perfection, especially the Arcade remix. And Harmony of Despair’s remix is essentially the original but modernized. What a delightful night for this “dance of the holy man”.
every time I hear bloody tears I think of brentalfloss's lyrics for it
Simon's theme will play at my wedding
Im surprised New Messiah from Belmont's revenge wasn't an honorable mention
X-Too much awesome songs
3-Crucifix Held Close (Portrait of Ruin / Arcade version)
2-Richter's theme (N64 violin version)
1-Bloody Tears (whatever version)
I like these themes from the castlevania portrait of ruin: In search of the secret spell, hail from the past, behind the gaze, chaotic playground, gaze up from the darkness, dance of sadness, Iron blue intention, Jail of Jewels, and (The Dracula and Death final battle theme and forgot the title).
An interesting list
I did really enjoy playing Super Castlevania IV and I agree Simon's theme is awesome. The only other Castlevania game I beaten and played was Rondo of Blood but that was a emulated version of the translated PSP version that came with the Dracula X Chronicles. I played most of Rondo of Blood as Maria and playing as her was really fun. But I beaten Dracula in Rondo of Blood with Richter for the sake of being thematic.
I was expecting Illusionary Dance to be on here tbh lol
My very first Castlevania game was Circle of the Moon, so bias probably plays a role in it.
But my favorite theme is the Underground Warehouse theme from CotM. Just the right amount of mystique and energy that makes you want keep exploring. I've heard the Super Castlevania IV version, and I like it almost as much.
HELL YES Castlevania Curse of Darkness
I knew it! Simons theme is rightfully in #1😎
I would say either Divine Bloodlines or Iron Blue Intention is my favorite.
Hell Yeah Simon Belmont theme!
Number 5 made want to buy order of ecclesia for a second the music was the only thing my ears was listening to.
Here's my top Castlevania themes list. I'll try to follow your example and only use one theme per game. This will include the Lords Of Shadow reboot trilogy as well.
10. Bloody Tears-Gothic Metal Remix (Not included on an official game, but an epic remix)
9. Sorrow's Distortion-Order Of Ecclesia
8. Trevor Belmont Fight Theme-Castlevania: Curse Of Darkness
7. Anti-Soul Mysteries Lab-Castlevania: Lament Of Innocence
6. Final Battle (Satan)-Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 1
5. Heart Of Fire-Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow
4. Castle Dracula-Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night
3. Vampire Killer-Castlevania Judgment
2. Final Battle (Dracula)-Castlevania: Mirror Of Fate
1. Titanic Struggle-Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2
I personally enjoy the Dance of Illusions on all of them
I would have put Twilight Stigmata (Shanoa’s theme) somewhere on here and maybe the Judgement version of Vampire Killer, but awesome list, even a few years later.
#8 ass kicking immanent for Dracula and his forces of darkness
the tragic prince from SOTN is the best castlevania song ever..
am I the only one who looked at the title and thought this was going to be about game-play themes that were utilized throughout the series? (like the magic abilities, the partner system, and the ability to take the abilities of your fallen enemies)
What was the the title of the music used on Castlevania Season 2, Episode 7?
I pretty much agree with most of the list (well, the songs I know anyway), but I'd like to give my honorable mentions.
- The Beginning (DoS version)
- Subterranean Hell (DoS)
- Lost Painting (SOTN)
- Illusion Dance (pretty much all versions)
- Hail From The Past (PoR). This one is especially dear to me, I love the mix of gothic ambiance, somewhat dancy beat and slight oriental influence. I swear I've died a lot in PoR due to me concentrating more on the song than on the game.
- An Empty Tome (OoE & HoD). I love both versions equally.
About "Bloodlines" theme,I think I prefer the Dracula X Chronicles version. My favourite!
My top ten favorite CV themes are
10:Richter's Theme (CVX)
9:Heart of Fire (CV:AoS)
8:Awake (CV:CotM)
7:Sinking Old Sanctuary (CVB/CV:CotM)
6:Bloody Tears (CV2/SCV4)
5:Simon's Theme (SCV4)
4:Monster Dance (CV2)
3:Top Floor (CV:AoS)
2:Vampire Killer (All versions)
1:Poison Mind (CV:DxC)
So good list!
Mad forest and Aquarius (for Castlevania 3) are so good musics.
Awake! One of my favorites as well.
I always like the castle center
One of my personal favorites is Dance of Illusions from Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. It is so perfect for Dracula, having a sense of nobility while still being gothic and constantly building on top of itself having the song get more chaotic and threatening as it builds. The original is still amazing, but this song just blows it out of the water.
I usually think of "Nothing to Lose"...
