A long time ago, I went to Toys R Us, and they were getting rid of all their Sega CD stuff. I got a Sega CD with Sewer Shark for $20. and all the games were $10. I got Sonic CD, Shining Force CD, Popful Mail, and Lunar: Eternal Blue... I spent $63 that day.
Wow, I love the detail that these guys offer. They fully explain everything that made the game rare/fun. These guys really know their history. Thanks for putting out great videos.
John Hancock is a BO$$!!!!! "If I really want to play a game, I'M GOING TO PLAY THAT GAME!!" Spoken like a straight BOSS! Episodes with John are so sick. You get great history as well as getting to see the physical media.. Metal Jesus and Drunken Master, you guys are straight boss too.
I have been collecting for approximately 20 years. I take pride that the vast majority of my collection was purchased in person. Everyone is going to have their opinions about why I didn't show other Sega rarities. I am well aware of the UPC sticker rarities and Blue cart re-releases and have several of them. I want to thank everyone for watching this video, and may it help people collect Sega. Game on!
The back story on the "sticker" SMS UPC is that those are PAL carts imported to the US and the UPC is a sticker over the European UPC. Spiderman, Strider, Golden Axe Warrior and Sonic the Hedgehog have them. James Buster Douglas Boxing was the last true NTSC release for the SMS henceforth the rarity. Over in Europe is is George Foreman boxing. I collect Sega exclusively :)
I love how he made him drink the beer backstage. The Immortal would be so fun to just sit down and rap gaming with. Just being able to visit the collection and talk to John would be an honor.
We're all good friends with John... and Paul is a trained martial arts instructor. There was nothing weird or truly threatening about it. It was played for a joke.
Thank you very much for organising this, it was really good to hear the discussion on the rarer Sega titles. John's collection is just fantastic. Very good to know as I have a nice copy of Power Strike :) Not the B&W cover version though.
Power Strike was originally obtained by sending in "proof of purchase"s from, if I remember right, two (maybe three) select games, plus some amount of cash. Don't quote me on that, though. May be confusing the deal with the Phantasy Star deal they had. It was later released in stores with full color box art. Love that you support Starland, btw. Have been dealing with them since the early 90s, when there was just a retail store, where I actually worked for a short while. One of the coolest owners, with some of the best employees you'll find.
I'm guessing he was pointing at Keio when he said he would open it if it was sealed. The copy of Keio I bought was sealed (no I did not get a great deal on it lol), and I opened it to play it. I'm am right there with you man!!!
Cool ass video! Sega, one of my favorite companies but interestingly, John you are awesome for having all these games and the condition that they're in.
I've started collecting for the Sega Saturn, but exclusively in Japanese since so few of the games require any knowledge of the language, and many of the same games are a fraction of the price in Japan than they are in English. That doesn't stop the rare ones from reaching into the hundreds of dollars. The best-known one is probably Radiant Silvergun, but I was shocked to learn that not only did Street Fighter Alpha 3 come out for the Saturn, it's actually better than the Dreamcast port. Both of those games regularly get into the $200-250 range. But the holy grail of JPN Saturn collecting is a little number called Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru. Outrageous prices on eBay. Haven't seen it for anything less than $750. Sealed copies have stretched into the $2000 range. Apparently, less than 8000 copies of the game are known to exist.
In terms of having a sealed game, i would crack it open and play it, i dont collect to sell the games later, i collect to play the games. I actually don't get the point of buying a game and never opening it because its worth a lot. Why would you buy a game if you are not going to play it?
think of it this way: for the most part, if you're playing the games, a used game is going to be cheaper vs. a sealed game. unless you come across a sealed game that's extremely rare for a relatively good price, you wouldn't bother buying it sealed. most people buying sealed games see it as an investment, or they specifically like collecting them. [i'm talking about older games btw... current gen or last gen i prefer new games in general, and yes i open them and play them[
I love how he asks how much the games cost. I hate when people make videos about games and don't tell you what the price range is. Metal Jesus You Rock!!!
He's right about Mark of the Wolves. This was actually the last game I bought for the DC when it was commercially relevant. When they filmed this it was selling used for around 30-40. Now its averaging 100.
Brings back memories of when I worked at Babbage's 1997-98. I reserved Burning Rangers and Panzer Dragoon Saga (a customer, a coworker, and I reserved Panzer but our store got only 2 copies--customer was SOL). My buddy got Shining Force 3. A few years later I ended up selling my Saturn stuff, including those two gems. My buddy still has his Shining Force somewhere.
Its understandable keeping games sealed for the value, but it is such a pleasure having "hands on" capabilities with the games and consoles. I enjoy sharing this with you guys, and bid good day!
LOVE this video, BC i was always since birth loved SEGA, i started out gaming on nes , but my first console purchase was the genesis, then the sega cd and then yall know ,but anyways i am a Nintendo fan first now but only bc SEGA has died this unfortunate death, great vid
I was one of few people who had a Saturn and a Netlink, and I was one of very, VERY few people who ordered a copy of Daytona USA CCE Netlink Edition. Not only was it a Netlink game, but it was a mail order only game. I kept that game for 15 years, complete with the box. About six months ago (before I knew how rare and valuable it was), I threw it in the trash with a bunch of my Saturn back-up discs! I still have the case though, and it taunts me daily.
the plot changing depending on what actions you accomplished were, like, a big deal back then. "Yeah, dude! If you don't rescue Princess Pepe, you don't get to see the wizard's crystal treasure chest after you get through the mushroom key part! It's CrAzY!"
Thank you for sharing your collection John. I'm hoping for a remake/port of Panzer Dragoon Saga to modern systems. I played a (copy) on my Saturn years ago and this game deserves a much larger audience than it got.
@HENCEtheWEATHER - Thanks for that. And John has a DVD collection he sells for that goes way more in-depth across his entire collection. Highly recommended!
Lunar games are AMAZING. When gamers look at the graphics at first glance they would not want to play it, BUT this game has great voice acting, animation, game-play, character designs, and MUCH MORE. This game is so bad ass it needed an Art Box to contain the game along w/ bonus materials. I highly recommend it to you RPG fans. I shit you not it is one or if not my favorite RPG for the PS1. I'm glad there are others that feel the same.
I have no idea how any of those Sega CD/Saturn cases last. All my Saturn games I've gotten in original cases are all cracked, or the hinge comes off, etc. I love how JP region Saturn and Sega CD stuff comes in ordinary jewel cases, those big plastic boxes were a terrible idea. Seeing a complete copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga like that is just crazy. I'd love to play that game.
When it comes to sealed games, I would sell the sealed to buy a used copy if I want to play it. That way someone who wants the sealed copy has the chance to get it instead of having it ruined.
I stand corrected. As for "engines", look up Ring King and World Champ for the NES, as well as Double Dribble and Ultimate Basketball for the NES as well. These two pairs are very similar to each other. :)
John shares my views on sealed games. Yeah, its cool to have a sealed copy of a title, but my priority is playing the original version over just letting it sit on a shelf if I am unable to get a 2nd copy of it. Shit, is Joshua harder to get then Spiritual Warfare? I got a complete copy from an Ollie's that had a big shelf full of them and always kicked myself for not grabbing a couple extra.
@jay270486 - Most serious collectors prefer a boxed copy so they can enjoy the game 20 years from now. I consider XBLA games almost like rentals. However, download releases can lower prices for a bit
The guy with the game collection looks a lot like a hunter, if I ever saw him i'd assume he is a hunting person, not a badass video game collector! Impressive collection indeed.
Just sold a 8 bit NES in the original box with Zapper Mario/Duck Hunt set. With 42 games including Metroid, Strider, and many others and the power pad for track and field for $100.00. Console worked and was maybe due for pin cleanup but cost more used before refurbished as console alone.
I just did a complete playthrough Crusader of the Century. I must have played it wrong, because during the entire game I never came across anything remotely resembling an RPG.
That was awesome! I'm from Sacramento so me and my friends love anything Working Designs. They were the local game company doing big things for mostly niche games at the time. We couldn't help but root for them! I miss my copy of PDS. That amazing soundtrack still haunts me to this day. Awesome collection!
Very cool. Dig the Digital Press clock! In terms of SEGA collecting, where it really gets off the wall and expensive is when you factor in Japanese-only releases for systems like Saturn and Dreamcast. SO many games never made it over.
i had disc 1 for panzer saga, sega Saturn magazine in uk released the whole of disc1 as a demo - biggest regret not buying the full game but it's true I didn't exactly see it about.
in my opinion you should use an emulator, or get a repro, if there is a really valuable game thats rare and sealed. even if you don't care, it helps preserve them. games are degrading and disappearing :( so we should try to keep them around as a community, ya know?
I have seen many videos with john in them, and I have even chatted with him myself over the phone. He seems like a very nice guy. Also he is nicer then I am I don't even allow and food or drinks in my game room, especially near my rare games.
well I think it's probably final fantasy viii which alot of people hate on; but to me the story, music, subtle humor, and surreal steam-punk world takes the cake. Rpg is such a broad term to me too, I really like titanic adventure out of time on pc. I've played some WOW which is cool when you are in the zone for it. clock tower for ps1 scarred the pants off me when I was younger and had like a million endings. who can forget Zelda link to the past, links awakening, or orcarina of time either?
What a collection! Panzer Dragoon Saga has to be the best game I've ever played and along with Shenmue 1 & 2 and Shining Force III are my favorite games of all time. I also still need to play Snatcher I hope I can do that eventually.
I think I would declare that entire room the "no beer zone". That's like letting a toddler take his kid's meal into a museum, it's only a matter of time before a ketchup-coated pickle finds its way onto something valuable.
I was so pissed off when I watched this video... I found two copies of snatcher that were sealed for 5 bucks each at a flea market..... Little did I know the value. Dammit. :/
I actually have a "Duke Nuk'em" complete for Sega Genesis that I bought off of Ebay some time ago. The box art and directions are in Spanish, as this game is not from the USA, but it plays on the NTSC Sega Gensis just fine. I have never seen another one for sale since...
I've seen this before and may have commented the same thing, but it's cool to hear John is from Redding, repping Northern Cailfornia. Shout out from your Stockton fans:)
I just bought Panzer Dragoon Saga today in Minnesota! The retailer was asking 400 dollars for it but He then said if I bought it today, he would knock off 100 dollars! Still a bit pricey but worth it!
What a mega collection. Though I understand why collecting complete system collections is a goal for some gamers, It still is funny to think paying a lot for a game like that boxing one where you do not even want to play it because it sucks so bad.
I'm going for a full Saturn collection (PAL because I'm English), so I'm a big SEGA fan too, Panzer Dragoon SAGA is expensive even for PAL, it costs £200 here which is around $316, it's the game I'm dreading the most. I've got to say, this is my favourite collection, not because of size, but because he has a story for everything, most people just say "I bought it off eBay"... Also I've just bought the same hat (the Atari one) off eBay, cost me a helluva lot because of international shipping.
I just got my first Saturn a few days ago. Now I need to find some more games! Probably won't be getting Panzer Dragoon Saga any time soon, but I've always wanted to play it.
I still have Lunar 1 and 2 on both Sega CD and PS1 - surprisingly still playable. Two games I do regret not buying are Popful Mail (Sega CD) and Dragon Force (Saturn). I'm surprised I bought (and still have) Burning Rangers when it's a rare game....
They're hard to find. But if you can find some small game shops near your area usually you can get a good deal! I suggest getting hold of games like Steel Empire(My Favourite ^.^), and Rock n' Roll racing(Rare-ish...).If you're looking for a Sega CD, I give you a good luck for that. It's difficult to find things like CD drives that work after so long. That's why cartridge consoles still work, there are no moving part within then. Anyways! I wish you good luck on your own collection!
Jesus, please make more videos with this John character. I love his collection and I would love to see way more of his treasures. That dude needs to create his own channel... if he has the confidence to talk on screen, he will pretty much become the Godfather of gamester81 (if that makes any sense)...
MetalJesusRocks Lol Bro!! Guess you must have been under the Drunken Master Paul Influence :)) Nice mega game collection btw. I've started to collect a little bit for PS3 and PS2 taking you and others as an inspiration and showing me the GOOD GAMES. But it is pretty costly and timely. Although not super costly compared to other collections hobbies... Unless you go after the rare gems but they can maintain their value. Do you have FF VII misprint rare black label? I saw that going on ebay for 700-1k+ but I saw another one titled as that going for only 70$... I guess misprint copies go for a lot more. Damn it would have been funny if you bought one of those originally then took it back and exchanged because you thought it was flawed though...
@Masterofthesmashing - We showed MUSHA a few episodes ago, so we wanted to keep things fresh for Subscribers. As for Moonwalker, it's not even in the Top 10 of rare CIB games...at least in the US. You can see for yourself at RarityGuide (dot) com.
Hope you're aware that Shining Force 3 has a translation patch and is fully emulatable. Even premium disc is around. Sharing this info because it's my favourite RPG ever and I think everyone should be able to experience it.
I sold my Crusader of Centy years ago... A few weeks ago I found it at the game shop and it was my original cartridge. Still has my saves on it.
at the beginning, mj says sorry for the length of this video.. then at then end im like what is that all? i would watch 40 hours of his collection!!!
Legendary. I miss Sega
***** I'm with you. I really wish Sega could make another console, but sadly, it ain't gonna happen.
If I joined Sega, then I would probably suggest a console idea to get it back in the race.
i love sega too i also like sonic and ........... ( cant frikin tellz )
east3myway cuz no one at sega thinks about that? Im sure it's been discussed they cant even put out a proper classic edition it's all 3rd party now
This video had me giggling with excitement just to see what he had to show. Like "show and tell" for video game nuts. Thanks for the video!
He does have MUSHA, but we just chose to not show it for this video, because we already did during his previous Room Tour
This video never gets old, one that I have to come back to every so often ❤.
I have been collecting for approximately 20 years. I take pride that the vast majority of my collection was purchased in person. Rick Steiner?! Is that you?! lol
Welcome to the dogpound!
I love how he made him drink the beer backstage. The Immortal would be so fun to just sit down and rap gaming with. Just being able to visit the collection and talk to John would be an honor.
Rambo 3 on Sega Genesis = The best video game EVER!
Handcock, Hidden Gems, Double Chins... This man has it all \m/
Did anyone else notice how quickly and seamlessly Paul pulled out that knife at around 7:00? That man has had professional training.
We're all good friends with John... and Paul is a trained martial arts instructor. There was nothing weird or truly threatening about it. It was played for a joke.
Thank you very much for organising this, it was really good to hear the discussion on the rarer Sega titles. John's collection is just fantastic.

"It's Seattle, and we're wearing sunglasses". I love this.
Why break open anything sealed when pretty much every console (including PS2/Gamecube) has been emulated near perfectly?... fantastic collection tho.
I'm guessing he was pointing at Keio when he said he would open it if it was sealed. The copy of Keio I bought was sealed (no I did not get a great deal on it lol), and I opened it to play it. I'm am right there with you man!!!

Rex game super rare. he had no idea he had it and never played it lol. seems like it found a good home
Excellent video, I really appreciate you guys for going all the way to interview this guy, he really had some epic games in his collection.
I come home from work and i see this video on my youtube updates! BROUGHT A SMILE TO MY FACE :) MJR!
Brings back memories of when I worked at Babbage's 1997-98. I reserved Burning Rangers and Panzer Dragoon Saga (a customer, a coworker, and I reserved Panzer but our store got only 2 copies--customer was SOL). My buddy got Shining Force 3. Just saw a panzer dragoon saga for saturn sell for $800! And a factory sealed for $1,000!
Wow... I've owned that since it released.. Could be tempted to sell :o
The immortal John Hancock. The name is COMPLETELY appropriate. I feel like I might meet this man one day.
I've got Panzer Dragoon Saga EU and Shining Force 3 EU versions... Sometimes tempted to sell. Crazy prices
I was one of few people who had a Saturn and a Netlink, and I was one of very, VERY few people who ordered a copy of Daytona USA CCE Netlink Edition. I always love the videos with all three of you guys cause that collector dude always has something awesome to show :D Seems like a very humble man :D
@HENCEtheWEATHER - Thanks for that. And John has a DVD collection he sells for that goes way more in-depth across his entire collection. Highly recommended!

Seeing a complete copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga like that is just crazy. I'd love to play that game.
Of all those games, the only one I played was the Snatcher. That game holds a very special place in my heart, Love it.
When it comes to sealed games, I would sell the sealed to buy a used copy if I want to play it. That way someone who wants the sealed copy has the chance to get it instead of having it ruined.
That's a great idea!!!
I stand corrected. As for "engines", look up Ring King and World Champ for the NES, as well as Double Dribble and Ultimate Basketball for the NES as well. These two pairs are very similar to each other. :)

john thank you for sharring ...i am a huge gamer since i was 5 so seeing the jems you have is truly awesome
Love the fact that this dude will open a rare game he wants to play and not just set it on a shelf!
I just did a complete playthrough Crusader of the Century. I must have played it wrong, because during the entire game I never came across anything remotely resembling an RPG.
You need some more longform content, I loved this video and how intricate it was.
I like RUclipsrs that can do both. Make a good three minute video and a good thirty minute video. Metal Jesus Rocks... rocks.
Dude...Game Nut is MY FAVORITE place to buy games! I can't go in there and not come out with something...well worth the 45 minute drive from South KC!
That was awesome! I'm from Sacramento so me and my friends love anything Working Designs. They were the local game company doing big things for mostly niche games at the time. We couldn't help but root for them! I miss my copy of PDS. That amazing soundtrack still haunts me to this day. Awesome collection!
Cool vid bro, get these two in your vids more often, i bet the three of you together would be so funny! Keep up the good work!
Randomly paused at 12:11 and it looks like he's holding the spoon.
Breathtaking collection!

I own PDS! Bought it day one. It's still in mint condition. I knew way back when it would be valuable. It is awesome.
I love how you guys push the independent game branches. Keep those things alive people!! Shop there first!

A Lunar Silver Star Story on your shelf! Here, you can have my like :D
The Punisher was such an awesome beat em up, I used to rent it from Blockbuster all the time.
Thanks for this man. definitely gonna hit up the flea markets later this week
You're drinking Alaska Amber? I'm FROM Alaska. Very proud.
What a collection! Panzer Dragoon Saga has to be the best game I've ever played and along with Shenmue 1 & 2 and Shining Force III are my favorite games of all time. I also still need to play Snatcher I hope I can do that eventually.

Really enjoyed seeing some of John's SEGA games! Brings back memories.
Soooo many games!
The rarest Master System game is "Les Schtroumpfs Autour du Monde".
the guy on the left is hard to watch
Rick Rude
what are you 12?
Don't worry, he's confusing your mom for his dad.
DMP is great to watch!! jus stoppit Hachi Roku.
he literally used to do interviews with game devs.. Feel like hes jsut trying to make it entertaining
>"it's JDM bro!" weeb has opinions about other people

"Hair Metal on the stereo" Fuck it, I don't even need to see the rest of the video to know that it deserves a thumbs up.
No SMS big box The Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck, with T Shirt and music tape?
I got my one(1) sealed copy of Snatcher in a clearance box for $5. There was at least 20 of them that I did not get. Ugh.
Jesus, please make more videos with this John character. I love his collection and I would love to see way more of his treasures. That dude needs to create his own channel... if he has the confidence to talk on screen, he will pretty much become the Godfather of gamester81 (if that makes any sense)...
A twitchy hand talker drinking beer asking to touch your rarest games... do you let him and hope your channel grows? Well do yah?!
Where was Metal Jesus throughout this entire video? He barely made an appearance one getting there!
SN011GlobeTrot I was sleeping off my hang over :)

Lol Bro!!
If a newbie wanted to get started collecting Sega, where would y'all, or John, suggest they start? So overwhelming! Great video, thank you :)
@ 1:23 Heavy Metal Jesus Rocks is Gassed
god DAMN i love the Blues Brothers reference at the beginning. well done
Shining Force 1 and 2 were available in Australia, on the Megadrive (Genesis) and they were awesome fun.
I played Golden Axe Warrior when I was a kid, I used to hire out the consoles and games from my video store.
Still have my copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga & Shining Force III in pretty much pefect condition. Bought both when they came out too!
Hope you're aware that Shining Force 3 has a translation patch and is fully emulatable.
Even premium disc is around.
Sharing this info because it's my favourite RPG ever and I think everyone should be able to experience it.
