    that‘s an electronic drumset charlie is playing, it doesn‘t make sounds of its own, you have to plug it into an amp or headphones. it‘s great for apartment living and it gives you a variety of different drum sounds. you could even put the wilhelm scream on a cymbal.

      I’m surprised that ended up being a such a surprise. I mean, when she’s not trying to ingratiate herself with Nick, she’s within a few feet of Ben most of the time in Season 1, except for when she’s actually ON his arm (like at the St John’s match).

  • @Mixxie67

    The clue that the dad is still supportive he says "No hanky-panky til you're *married*." It's really just a normal parental reaction to their kids becoming sexual beings. The mom is just strict and has knee-jerk reactions. They didn't handle that perfectly (and there's more in the future) but it is realistic.

    • @Venslor
      @Venslor Год назад +5

      I also get the sense that dad often plays the middle ground between mom and the kids, with mom staking much more extreme reactions to things. He gets out the middle ground before she has a chance to offer her more extreme decisions.

    • @Aeroldoth3

      I interpreted the no sex rule as suggesting he expects a HET marriage, as some think marriage is only a het thing. No sex until marriage is about keeping hets from getting pregnant, which is not a concern with gays and thus makes no sense.

    • @Mixxie67
      @Mixxie67 Год назад +5

      @@Aeroldoth3 Nah. He's very supportive of Charlie. In the comics he actually tells the mom she's being to strict. He may even just be teasing Tori at that point because she keeps objecting to "hanky panky".

      @@Aeroldoth3 Accidental pregnancies are not a concern with cis gays, yes, but unprotected sex still offers a lot of risks even for gay couples, such as STDs (and for straight people as well, which is why everyone who has sex should use condoms). But aside from that, it's pretty usual for parents to be uncomfortable with the idea of their kids having sex, especially if said kids are minors

    • @J_Mock92
      @J_Mock92 3 месяца назад

      @@Aeroldoth3 uhhhh no? I don't even _almost_ understand how you could possibly perceive it that way... You're free to interpret things however you feel fit, but we're also free to tell you that your interpretation is way off base .... That clearly wasn't the intention of the writers, and the majority of people don't see it that way either... Maybe you just have some kind of specific trauma or something that is leading you to that conclusion....? I don't know your life, but imif that's the case, I really hope you get the help and support you require..... Charlie's dad comes across as incredibly loving and supportive (in both the show and graphic novels), even if he may not fully understand or relate to the situation personally..... It's just absolutely WILD to me that you would even have that take on the situation....
      (Edit: also, using terminology and referring to people as "HETS" just feels incredibly wrong and inappropriate, if not outright bigoted.....)

    Also, keep in mind that Harry’s not just a bully. He’s the leader of the popular clique who considers himself Nick’s really good friend, and he has been working all through Season 1 to separate Nick from Charlie. His shock tactics backfired at the cinema, but he’s still thinking that if he gives Nick enough space to mellow out, then they can put the falling out behind them. Harry doesn’t think fighting is a big deal finds it a useful way to blow off steam, kinda like rugby. This season he shifts to trying to win Nick back in his condescending and backward way, and is completely clueless about why it’s the wrong approach because he’s lacks the self-awareness and the emotional maturity to properly analyze the mess he’s gotten himself into. People keep wondering why Harry won’t leave Nick and Charlie alone. It’s because Harry sees he’s losing Nick to Charlie and wants to win him back.

But heteronormativity is also a VERY powerful force, so it doesn't surprise me that there are kids who have always seen Nick as straight, who could reconcile that moment with that idea of him in their heads. It happens irl too. Last year the actor who plays Nick dropped so many hints that he didn't identify as straight and just didn't want to publicly label his sexuality, yet people insisted he was straight and "queerbaiting" for months, until he unfortunately felt forced to publicly come out as bi. And even now, there are still jerks who refuse to believe he's anything but straight. @@nickreacts6394

Their level is that of the American High School Diploma. Students who enter Year 12/13 study for A Levels (which are like US AP courses). 3 to 4 A levels are required for University Entry.

    We saw Charlie's mom once in S 1, she asks Charlie to get the door [off screen] when Nick is coming by the morning after the Kiss. She sees them in the hall, Nick dripping wet, and says, "Nick! I didn't know you were coming 'round this morning." And Charlie says Nick was coming around to pick up a jumper he'd left behind. Mom gives a look that says that dripping wet in her front hall is pretty sketch to pick up a jumper [sweatshirt or sweater]. Then she suggests that Charlie might want to change out of his pajamas because they're going to to Grandma's this morning. Nick grins at Charlie because he now knows what Charlie sleeps in.

    Kit Connor, in a podcast, talked about the 6 weeks of rugby camp he did (Joe Locke quit pretty quickly, rationalizing that Charlie isn't supposed to bw good). Kit wasn't that great, according to himself, and they had to do a lot of tricks to make him look better than he is. Joe Locke said the other runners in season 2 had to kind of slow down so he could be appear to be really fast.
    Kit Connor also talked about having to put on weight for the role because he was too thin after spending lockdown going for really long walks. His previous roles tended to be either unconventional or nerd. He was young Elton John in "Rocketman", the voice of Pan, Lyra's daemon in "His Dark Materials", and as one
    a DnD-playing underclassmen of a private boys" (public in UK) school in an underrated horror comedy called "Slaughterhouse Rulez". He's actually got a musical background rather than jock, although he discovered he likes working out at the gym.

    • @normaladjacent
      @normaladjacent Год назад +9

      Their concern is understandable, especially after parents' evening, but imo it is kind of sad that they didn't express ANY support when Charlie told them he had a boyfriend. He was clearly excited to share the news with a big smile on his face, and they immediately trampled on that with their cold reaction. They don't do much to make Charlie feel like they're people he can confide in with good OR bad news in the future without being judged harshly.
      Without spoiling anything, I personally felt Charlie's uncharacteristic academic struggles and avoidance this season was a red flag signaling some deeper issues going on with him. I think if your star student kid (in the comic Charlie's actually listed at the top of his year) suddenly stopped doing his schoolwork, a more empathetic, serious conversation to work out what exactly is going on and come up with a solution together would be warranted, and more effective than just berating him and putting all the blame on his new relationship.

    • @katekolpan771
      @katekolpan771 Год назад +5

      In the comic, Charlie's parents are actually pretty excited he has a boyfriend until they find out it's Nick. I don't think this has much to do with Nick as a person, but it's more of a shock reaction because they've both assumed Nick is straight. I also think Jane is probably internally freaking out a little bit because she's left her 15-year-old to his own devices with this attractive, older rugby player without realizing there was any potential for anything romantic, so her reaction is playing into some stereotypes about high school jocks (this assumption comes up more than once in the comics). Jane wants to protect Charlie, but she's also really bad at communicating with him (there are reasons for this, but they contain massive spoilers so I won't elaborate), hence her overbearing nature and, sometimes, unreasonable behavior.
      His dad's reaction, which is brought on by Tori making a crack about grandchildren in the comics so it's less out of left field, while pretty old fashioned, is one that a lot of kids would get from a parent, which is kind of refreshing since it suggests that Julio just views their relationship the same way he would view any relationship. My high school SO had parents like Sarah, who definitely didn't care if I slept over, but my parents were like Charlie's and definitely wouldn't have allowed that because people have different parenting styles.

    I, too, was perplexed about how David and Nick could’ve turned out so differently. However, if you think about it, David has to be AT LEAST 3 years older than Nick. That means he got 3 extra years or more with his dad. You can see by the way he talks about his dad throughout the season that he admires him. I think the rift in the family made David want to emulate his dad and curry his favor without having much opportunity to actually bond with him meaningfully, since his dad is so distant. He’s insecure and lost and less grounded than he would be if he was all-in on his mom being the superior role model. He alternates between wanting to be wanted by Nick and his mother and feeling like his dad would have been the better choice to live with this summer. In his very first scene, he is fishing for reassurance that he’s been missed, and he keeps bugging Nick and putting his nose in Nick’s business because he wants to feel more connected with him without having the emotional maturity to figure out how. He’s familiar with the old blueprint of the antagonistic sibling role that includes stealing toys and wrestling and generally messing around, but hasn’t figured out how to bridge the gap to becoming a sibling that Nick would look up to. He’s just a mess, and you can see how he’s trying to connect with Nick in the most backward way possible, and he feels alienated when it doesn’t work. He’s a piece of work, but he is the product of a broken home in which he is less secure in his mother’s love and has manufactured a fantasy about his father’s love. Nick really trusts and loves his mom, making him more secure, more grounded, and more open to her positive influence. Most people revile David, but of all of the villains of this series, he’s the one I pity the most.

      Canonically, David is 20, so he's four years older than Nick. During the dinner party scene in the comics, Nick states that David has always bullied him. Nick attributes this to David's own self-hatred and says as much. I, too, think this is likely a result of David having a much harder time with the divorce since he remembers it more clearly. He also is massively insecure and needs to fit in with popular, posh people at university, a lot of whom aren't very nice.

Also, they would get so much further if they sat down and talked with Charlie about what was going on instead of making assumptions and automatically implementing restrictions. Even if Charlie couldn’t really articulate his issues (which extend beyond being distracted by Nick to actual PTSD with recurring stress triggers and inadequate coping tools), then Charlie would at least feel more supported and more inclined to think their priorities have his best interest in mind. By steamrolling over him and shutting down all his attempts to talk, they’ve jettisoned any hope of buy-in from Charlie and initiated the disordered coping strategy that he uses when he feels like he has no control. His parents really accelerated his spiral, and it’s so upsetting to watch.

      @@elisabethbauman6190 exactly, I also noticed that Charlie never actually stood up for himself unless the others in his life made him feel like he mattered, like Mr. Ajayi telling him to express his feelings to Ben, not to let anyone make him disappear, and Nick and his other friends. It seems like his parents are really uninvolved and uninterested. It made me so mad when his mother made the comment that there was plenty of drama in their household, like where bitch?? Charlies your son and that's your job to give him that safe space to be himself instead of the embarrassment and shame vibes I can feel coming off of him most times, until someone with actual warm feelings for him gives him a little push of confidence.

    This season is very good and significant. Having read the graphic novels recently, my experience with this season was so much hard hitting and impactful.
    As for similar vibe shows, I would definitely recommend the movie Red White and Royal Blue, and Young Royals after this.

    The dad is still supporting Charlie he didn’t ban nick from ever coming over just that they have to set some boundaries for their son. Yes he could have chose better words but he is still supporting his son just with boundaries a normal parent would set

    I think people overreact to how Charlie’s mom (in particular) reacts when she finds out his grades are tanking. A few things in her defense: First, Charlie is only 15, and we are led to believe had always been a good student. He obviously needs help prioritizing in the short term. Second, the ban was only until he completed his history essay. Instead, Charlie chose to wait until the very last minute, and was caught sneaking out. She’s a little cold and harsh, granted, but her instincts as a parent are correct. Sometimes parents need to help their children prioritize, even if the kids think other things are more important at the time.

      @@springform_99 totally agree. In volume 4 it’s explained somewhat why she is so stern and cold.

      Her instinct as a parent are not even close to be correct. She blames everything on Nick and doesn’t help Charlie in learning how to balance his personal life with his school life but instead only pushes him into actively avoiding his school work. She doesn’t listen to Charlie, blames it on Nick, doesn’t listen to her husband’s input, imposes a ban and then gets angry at him. That’s bad parenting. A good parent would’ve talked to their children, helped them in learning how to balance their school and personal life and would’ve made sure he had boundaries while still having his freedom. Charlie was happy for the first time since the year before. He was relentlessly bullied, he doesn’t eat, he has mental health problem and he can’t even talk to his parents because they dismiss him immediately. Nick is the last reason on why he is failing, he is happy for once and it’s only normal for him to cling so much to his happiness
