Two scenes that made me ugly cry immediately: When Imogen showed Nick her new pup, and when Tao’s mom talked about her relationship with his father……total gold!
Charlie's mom is not cruel or homophobic It's self projection Coz her mom was very strict to her when she was young And Charlie did have a dark history,i don't wanna give spoilers but we knew about bullying in s1 So his mom is extra protective in her own strict parenting way
The scene with Tao and his mom at the end of ep 2 also made me bawl 😭❤️ I love his mom and I’m so so happy we’re getting to see more and more of these side characters
Thinking about Tao’s mom and the story she tells really got us- such a subtle character with big heart! So excited for more of her in episodes to come 😭
Isaac is reading Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé in the sleepover scene! in the first couple episodes you can also see him reading I Love This Part by Tillie Walden (one of Alice Oseman's favorite graphic novelists (and mine)), and there are lots of other great books throughout the season!!
He also read one of Alice Oseman's own books about in season 1! I like to imagine, especially within the framework of everything else that's going on in the sleepover scene, that the title choice ACE of spades (where the only word really visible is the first one) is not a coincidence. He glances around at each of the couples, then kinda smiles and half rolls his eyes before he goes back to his book. Being aspec of course doesn't mean that he can't have his own partner, but in this scene I definitely got the impression that he doesn't want what the other couples have. I'm not even ace myself, but I have so much love for Isaac and how his character is handled. AO herself being aroace means that she really understands how to bring nuance to those characters instead of other shows that tend to write them very one-dimensional (where asexuality is portrayed as when you never date or have any interest in any people or relationships)
Spoiler rant about Charlie's parents ahead: . . . . . My big issue with Charlie's parents is how they only show interest in getting rid of the surface level issues, but completely neglect the underlying root issues behind their son's behavior. It's pretty clear one of big reasons for Charlie being so overly invested in his relationship with Nick, and consequent self-neglect, is because of his unresolved trauma from the bullying. The show depicts Charlie's parents as evidently being at least somewhat aware of their son's situation (given their overprotectiveness) yet clearly not bothering to address these issues in any meaningful way other than belligerently restricting Charlie's autonomy. It is telling that Nick's mom notices Charlie's eating disorder while his own parents show no sign of knowing and/or acknowledging the issue at all. Expanding on this, notice how the show depicts Nick and Tao's moms's committment to open vulnerability and mutual dialogue is crucial to their kids healthily working through their issues. Conversely, the show depicts Charlie spiraling deeper into his coping mechanisms largely because of his parents acting exclusively in a domineering and abrasive way towards him. Rather than attempting to understand Charlie's situation and relationship with Nick through mutual dialogue, they cut him out from the conversation entirely and only speak down to him. It is entirely a valid response for Charlie to feel frustrated at his parents (even though he may not be able to fully articulate it) for perpetually neglecting the root cause under the rug in favor of covering up its symptoms. It's also worth noting that Charlie's self-neglect is arguably a reflection of his parents' emotional neglect. Charlie admits to Nick and Ben that he has subconsciously internalized a lot of the bad messages he got when he was bullied, and the show's focalization of parenting illustrates how his parents, as well-intentioned as they may have been, unfortunately started feeding into his issues.
I sort of get your point. But terenie are no Parenting Academies, so they act the way the do having best intentions but still failing. Must be tough for them. They did embrace Charlie's queerness, were by his side when thigs were bad. They are straight themselves, generation apart, so they are a bit clueless.
@@bogumibogda3299 Yeah I'm not saying that they're acting with malicious intentions, and I do believe they are trying their best. Hell I don't think they're necessarily even "bad" parents, especially compared to parents like Darcy's mom and Nick's dad. Just saw a lot of people missing why Charlie was frustrated with them and consequently writing him off as just being "childish" (which isn't a fair or accurate assessment), so I wanted to even the discourse a bit.
I love your reactions! So natural and spontaneous. What made me emotional from these 2 episodes is first when Tori almost cries at the end of episode 1, trying to protect and support her brother. And also Imogen who is a real friend for Nick, and gives him a hug, not knowing how to express her support to him coming out to her
I’m so happy. I have *never* in my entire life watched a show and loved it enough to keep watching it, but THIS. Thank you guys for making these reactions, and thank you to Everyone on Heartstopper for making it possible.
I missed the “i made cupcakes” line when I first watched!! I love that. If you read the comics you know that Nick likes to bake. Also, I think Nick’s parents were being supportive. I wish they’d been more positive about Charlie having a boyfriend, but as a parent of teenagers I see that thier instinct is to protect their child. I know his dad was only 50% serious about he no sleep overs, but keep in mind that Charlie is only 15 years old, and still needs his parents to set some boundaries.
God. Watched season 2 in one sitting. Such a warm, heartfelt, important show. I was watching cast interviews and Joe Locke mentioned how Heartstopper is looking at a young queer persons experience through rose colored glasses and with a lot of optimism- I think that’s why so many people are endeared to it. It might not mirror our own, but there are so many identities being represented that you can’t help but feel like your younger self. God. I get emotional knowing teens and tweens will have this show to potentially see parts of themselves 🥺❤️❤️
Wow I am so glad the youtube algorithm recommended you two. So adorable watching your reactions to my all time favorite show and I am looking forward to watching all of your content!
I'm not sure that Charlies mom is being homophobic, when I was 14 and had my first boyfriend, whenever my grades would slip that was always my first punishment, banned from seeing or talking to him. I think because my parents knew that seeing him was what I wanted the most, so they hoped it would motivate me I guess.
When Charlie's dad said, 'until you're married' I smiled as I get the undertone of acceptance. But, coming from a place where there is no chance for any form of same-sex union, I'm green with envy too.
Ep 2 could be called "meet the parents' Charlie takes after his dad. Tori takes after her mom. Nick takes after his mum. It's nice to see glimpses of why Tao has a sense of abandonment.
I had such a big smile on my face throughout season 2 and on top of that I finished it in one sitting, which is a big deal for me. Also yes, no one could play Nick and Charlie better than Kit and Joe, and it's so funny that Kit had originally auditioned for the role of Charlie, I mean i can't believe he didn't just see himself in the mirror and realise that he's basically Nick Nelson.
I watched S2 as I aired in the UK and my emotions were all over the place but I am so happy to see you both reacting to it! 😭 can’t wait to see y’all watch Ep 5&6 xx
Im so glad you guys brought up the thing about Charlie slipping on his schoolwork and nick being distracted during his exam! It really annoyed me 😂 Maybe im just a nerd haha
i finished secondary school a couple months ago and i can confirm 80% of the teachers are strict as hell, especially in exam season LMAOO the pressure has never felt worse😭
Charlie's parents come across as severely emotionally constipated 😂 The Dad seemed okay in the first series, but both joyless here. No wonder Charlie's sister is protective 😅
As a bisexual person myself, if shows like this had existed that had great bisexual representation, admitting my same sex attraction would have been alot less confusing. I used to believe all straight people were attracted to the same sex to some degree. Turns out I was just different. I wasn't even fully aware of it until I fell head over heals for my bestfriend. It got to a point that a single touch would take me to heaven. I couldn't ignore or downplay my feelings anymore and thus became very depressed and sadly distanced myself from my friend. I am now out to my family. They were accepting and I feel a lot better now. So to all my confused people, just because the majority or all of your crushes were the opposite sex, doesn't mean that you can't fall in love with the same sex. Be a proud bisexual.
Just love you guys the way you see things in the show and express them. As for Chalie's mother, she is trying to be protective of him. Mothers seem to have a different reaction to dads (with gay sons), the mothers may think 'what did I do that made my son gay'. My mother was like this for a few months after I came out to my parents (age 21), I could feel her wrestling with her thoughts for some while. She did come round and was a lovely mother and we were close after this.
I don't feel like his parents are coming off homophobic .. strict yes but not homophobic .. I grew up in a somewhat strict household so I get where his mom is coming from (I'm 45 so you know I didn't come out until my 20s lol) .. my parents would react this way if my grades started to slip as well, especially if they new I had snuck out when I should have been studying Oh and we had a strict rule where my sisters were not allowed to have boys in their rooms nor girls in my brother's and my room .. and definitely no sleepovers in which boyfriends or girlfriends were going to be at. I think, younger generations might see this as homophobic also because a lot more parents have become more lenient but it's not something out of the ordinary.
33:09 you guys cannot be more wrong😂. They were not homophobic. Just protective of charlie(Their Son!!) And worried for his future, like most of the parents are. In the first season itself we get to know that Charlies Dad is not homophobic! You got it all wrong.
I didn't go to MS or HS in the US and thats how most of my teachers were while in class(at least in private/catholic school), outside of classroom they were caring and approachable yet there was still an air of respect owe to them even to the "cool ones". edit: In public school there were some that acted like the students' friend and let me tell you those were the least respected and in retrospective the ones we learnt the least from. So now every time I see a strict teacher or professor on TV, I know they will be the good ones.
LOVE your reactions!!! 💙Nick & Charlie💛are my faves! - I think Charlie's mum was ok when he told her he was gay, but now he has a flesh & blood & buff boyfriend & the fact that his schoolwork is suffering. I think she'll be better when his marks improve, b/c we know they go to Paris. - David is a dick! Another villain to be slain in this series!
Yes!!! I’ve (chey) been watching big brother since season 1 and I got Wes into it during season 17 and he’s a super fan now too! (He’s actually auditioned before!) And yes we love and adore Taylor Swift! Wes actually got so lucky and scored us tickets right before her show in March and we were at the Eras Tour freaking out because we didn’t think we were going to go! So happy we got to- a memory we’ll never forget!
29:45 It’s because this is their GCSEs, as someone’s who’s literally just done my GCSEs in June, the invigilators always shout and they don’t play around. Normally it’s fine though but in the UK GCSEs are one of the most important tests you’re ever going to have. All 16 year old must take the GCSEs and it counts as 100% of your grade (unless you’re taking a BTEC or in some other less common subjects with coursework, although I didn’t have any official coursework) 💯
Just a reminder that Sebastian Croft got banned on social media for cyberbullying when he was hate-posting too much about Ben 🤣 BIG MOOD BASH - he's way too good at his job I really can't believe how good ALL of the acting is in this show though.
I dont think the parents are being unreasonable. They're not telling him he's banned from dating Nick altogether, its just he's putting his schoolwork on the backburner because hes using all of his attention and energy on Nick (which isnt healthy either imho). If he had put the amount of time sneaking out into actually finishing his schoolwork, then Im sure he could have just saw Nick for real. I dont think the parents are perfect (judging by not expecting Nick to be "gay" because hes sporty) but like I can understand the frustration in catching your kid sneaking out of the house.
I understand that you want to see Imogen protected, but no, she doesn't NEED to know. The only person who should tell her would be Ben. Coming from anyone else is outing him. Being a horrible person does not negate the fact that coming out belongs to the individual, no one else. 21:40
This season we're getting more of the parents and I have to say Charlie's parents are very strict I mean for good reason on one hand he does need to do better and catch up on his school work but on the other his parents are coming about it the wrong way. The dad was very caring last season when he picked Charlie here from the party and the movie theater in disarray. This season the father is laying down the law

4:17 Apple Juice plays a vital role. You’ll see. #ShesGettingIt
29:51 They’re all queer and have authority. Also, it’s very British.
I was having the same reaction when it came to charlie and the coursework. Things would happen and I would be "aww, so sweet.DO YOUR HOMEWORK!"
😂😭 we’re begging!!!
I understand that you want to see Imogen protected, but no, she doesn't NEED to know. The only person who should tell her would be Ben. Coming from anyone else is outing him. Being a horrible person does not negate the fact that coming out belongs to the individual, no one else. 21:40
God I love this show so much 😭
same 😭😭 have you seen season 3 yet?!? INCREDIBLE
@@PettyPumpkins Yes I watched it all in one sitting, cried so much and I love ittttt it's so perfect.
Mr Farouk is dreamy
Oh we’ll be dreaming of farouk tonight guaranteed 😴💅🏻💋😈🤭
@@PettyPumpkins Stern Daddy fantasies much lol
This season we're getting more of the parents and I have to say Charlie's parents are very strict I mean for good reason on one hand he does need to do better and catch up on his school work but on the other his parents are coming about it the wrong way. The dad was very caring last season when he picked Charlie here from the party and the movie theater in disarray. This season the father is laying down the law
Yess heartstopper season 2
Like howv they did the Queen Charlotte limited series....we need a Tori miniseries or movie.
4:45 He’s just Nick
I don't know how this season Nick isn't out... they left the sports day holding hands...
