      Aware this comment is old but I VERY MUCH agree and had to say so. I'm a beginner and until I started regularly watching Peters videos I was so scared to make any decision and worried I'd ruin my trees. His very unconcerned approach to things has really helped me become a better caretaker of bonsai, just as much so as the bountiful information he gives :).

  • @LessTalkMoreDelicious

    Do you recommend training/bending the trunk of maples?
    I don't have an "upright maple"..but I have a "cascading maple," a Red Dragon. I bought 2 from my local nursery (small, young, 3 gallon pots, about 1/2-3/4" trunks, 2' tall); but their trunks were very straight and upright and uninteresting.
    So, I bent the trunks (with twine and bamboo stakes; no wire wraps) about 45degrees one way from bottom of trunk, and the top of the trunk back to centerline, to give a nice curve and S-shaped/C-shaped trunk.
    Is the curved trunk appearance advisable for Japanese maples? Or, is it only for other trees like pines and junipers, etc.?
    They will be used as Niwaki/outdoor trees. I will transfer them to a 15gallon pot maybe next year so they can grow a little more.

    • @acechadwick
      @acechadwick 6 лет назад +2

      I think the cascading maples look lovely with a twisted trunk, particularly if you prune from underneath and lower down to reveal the shape of the trunk. I have a Red Lace and an Orangina which both cascade and both have naturally developed slightly contorted trunks. In their natural Japanese habitat they sometimes are pictured on the sides of mountains where they would naturally be bent by winds anyway, so I think it's very naturalistic. They never look their best straight up and down. Twist away!

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 6 лет назад +6

      If you want to bend the trunk on a Maple it has to be done when it is no thicker than a match stick. Anything thicker will risk breaking.

    I have 2 maples about 2 feet or so but they branch out near the top and have no side branches for the first 18 inches or so. I have been told to let then grow for a couple seasons and then to work them (which I plan on doing) but noone has been able to tell me about keeping the plant short and ensuring side shoots will occur for me to be able to work in the years to come. What's your take on it peter chan?

    I am very new at bonsai, so this is the first time i have heard about rooting powder.
    My plan is to mainly do Yamadori, so i have a question around that.
    My main worry is that the roots will not develop when i get them home and put them in the pot.
    Is the rooting powder good for new trees also, or is it mostly for established pot trees?

    • @milesryan6321

      Petter Eliseussen The best soil mix for root development is spagnum peat moss

    • @incognitotorpedo42
      @incognitotorpedo42 4 года назад +1

      Rooting powder is a synthetic plant hormone that induces root formation. It's mainly used for cuttings, in order to encourage root development from the branch where previously there were no roots. It's not used on established plants or Yamadori.

    • @MrOhmygoditsben
