Dang! Thanks for the shout out Tim! I do love pruning cutleafs! I look forward to it every year! I keep pictures of all of my customers trees so I can see the transformation each year! Thanks y’all! MR MAPLE PODCAST!!!!
Definitely very important to keep cleaning your pruning scissors with each cut. I lost two Shaina JMs a while back as a result of not doing so. Infection set-in and I had lost each of them within weeks. I now use Rubbing Alcohol which I had bought off Amazon and spray wet my pruning scissors after each cut. I’m taking no chances as they say! But my approach to pruning is to remove dead, diseased , damaged and also branches that are showing signs of growing back into the main central branches! I have made my pruning late season but will make my next pruning session on some of my JMs early next Spring - as long as no frost is forecast here in the UK.
@@MrMapleShow quick question, do your plants bought around now or February already have fertilizer? Or would you recommend in general just not fertilizing until the second year of growth
Thanks guys I work on a property with two Japanese maples that haven't been tended to in years and took some heavy damage after a really bad winter, with your advice I am sure I can get these beautiful plants to good health again.
Thanks you guys!!! I forget to mention the Maple I sent you the photo, was 1 of 2 we purchased from you, as you can see it's thriving & healthy! Thanks on the prune tips, put my fears to rest Gary

If you’re not moving for a couple of months (or cross country)you could look into air layering some branches of your existing trees so you can take ‘em to your new place. There’s quite a few videos on how to do this if you don’t know how; I recommend the ones on Heron’s nursery channel. Cheers!
Hi Tim & Matt! Your channel has been a valuable tool to educate others on this important topic. Thank you for further explaining late summer pruning a JM for size control. ❤
Great video and information ... I LOVE to prune and after watching you two I'm a bit more confident that I'm doing most things correctly!!! One thing I always keep in mind, I was told once that a butterfly should be able to soar thru a japanese maple without touching it wings on any branch ... and I also keep in mind that mistakes happen, but just like a good (or bad) haircut - it'll grow back and be okee dokee. Thanks for all the info, inspiration and encouragement - I, for one, certainly do appreciate it all !!!
Thanks for taking the time to elaborate on this topic, it has somehow been quite the discussion.. Also love the acer griseum back there and how it contrasts with the rhododendron!!
I is now early May...my newest Bloodgood did not leaf out...I was told not to prune but I did lightly prune to encourage it to grow...I realize I volcanoed the trunk over the winter...so I opened it up...I added root stimulant thinking maybe that was the problem being a new planting...I just added and other mild nutrient to help. I can tell it is not dead but I don't know if it will come back..
Found you guys today and learned so much in just a few mins. Can't wait to get started on my Japanese maple.Just the right time in Tennessee. Thanks for all the info.
Thank you for the video, I have a bunch of Japanese maples and needed help pruning. I was wondering what kind of pruning scissors you are using in the video?
Good evening - I watched your pruning video and worked diligently to groom my 20+yr old lace leaf. We had extreme weather in zone 7 in Dec/Jan. with temps at 0 for several hours and snow. We always cover /tarp our maple, and we had two lights under the tarp, but we still suffered loss. What was an eye catching, jaw dropping dwarf lace leaf - now has large holes in the canopy. There are several new shoots coming off the trunk of the tree. I have always fertilized with camellia food. Other than pruning, babying, and fertilizing, what can I do to hope in the next few years that I can get this tree back to its top condition? Thanks for all the help from the pruning video. I had plenty of dead portions on the lace leaf.
Vigorous pruning in early spring before it leafs will give the most gains in growth. Liquid fertilizers also work great. These are the main steps to recovering. Sometimes heat lights can activate them and cause more harm. I’ve had that happen before
April 12th in Ontario pruning my potted Japanese maple; had deadwood because a rabbit chewed the trunk bark, seems to be healing well, but that side of the tree is damaged
Very good video my friends...About a month ago I planted a mature Shishigashira that was never pruned. I really would like to get in there and open it up and shape it. It's almost June do you it's ok to do it now or would you wait till late winter (March)? Good luck today with the open house!
I know it's not a Japanese maple, but the Shantung I have... mentioned that one before, I found some girdling roots and cut them off, exposed the flare and the bald tips are finally getting to grow. I'd LIKE to thin out the canopy a little for air flow, but am I too late in the season? It's young, 30 gal planted last November. I was told not to touch it for one year. At all. Under any circumstances unless spring is dead. I'm not sure if the tree has something though. The leaves (in my opinion) are starting to discolor, shrivel slightly and some (not many) are falling off at a very small size. I don't want to prune it and accidentally make anything worse. But I think it could use a light pruning to help out grow better. Especially since there were some pretty tight roots that were probably inhibiting it (I've noticed a flush of new leaves since taking those off) Really appreciate yalls knowledge, thank you 😊 🙏
Great video. I got a red Japanese maple recently from a Nursery online-got it thorugh the mail. The plant has a rootball but is a long twig. How do you work with a long twig? No leaves, etc has a little bud at the top.
Thanks for the video. I have a modest Acer collection (18 trees) mainly grown in 1/2 wooden barrels that I started about 9 years ago. Any chance of an update on how this pruning turned out in the following year?
Great video. Cannot wait for the weeper version. I have an Inaba Shidare that has all its branches on one side of the plant. How would I encourage branches on the other side?
Depends on why all the branches are on one side. Is it planted up against a house? Or does it only get sun on one side? You can always twist and stake one of the branches in the upright position and let it grow for a year

How high do you normally want your lowest limb on a 10 ft tree? Do you keep the limbs below the shortest limb trimmed back to about 1 ft to feed the trunk but not take growth from the leader?
Really just depends on the garden and location. If it is near a walk way long term I may want it above my head. If it is a specimen with some room I may want it to be more multi stemmed
I live in Texas and this summer weather dried out the top half of my 6 years old tree. Can I just got off the top half since it is with all dead on top and alive on bottom half? Thank you for you video.
