    I love the size of your compost bin in the chicken yard; we just use a small ring. We have never used any of the compost from it, seems like there is not enough. In the fall, we clean out the chicken house and goat area and add it to our garden along with leaves and let it compost in place. It did really well. Especially, the area that we covered with a black tarp. Also, we do not till.

    I too have unused garden boxes that i put in my run. Works amazing. They love it. Gives them something for them to do and they work for me so i dont have to turn it. 👊

    Your Channel was the first time I ever seen a Chicken Compost and Love the idea ❣️ There's a lot of work to be done to the old Chicken Coop that takes priority and they free range for now but We plan to do the same as soon as we finish their run 😊
    Thank you for helping us learn as you learn ❣️
    GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ❣️🙏❣️

    Hi. In the UK, with a smallholding for longer than I care to remember. You have got the right idea - let the livestock work for you. The nitrogen the birds produce in their poop is good for plant growth. I have a patch of wheat growing that I feed back to the birds in long plastic guttering on the ground. Crush up egg shells, sterilise in a microwave, and add a little to the grain. Free calcium for the chickens. Love the access ramp to the compost. Helps support the older birds into the compost.

    I love the way you treat the chickens like people. Also, how you treat the kids and teach them to después with the animals. Thanks for the info. ✌️

    I'm curious if you put crops that are in the nightshade family in the compost bin? Crops in the nightshade family are not safe for chickens. If you do put those crops in the compost bin, do your chickens just ignore those?? have you had any problems with your chickens getting sick?? Thank you

    • @AcresOfAdventure
      @AcresOfAdventure  Год назад +1

      We have never seen any of our chickens really sick at all. We have put some nightshade family crops in their and they must not care about them. I usually will bury them a little but no problems ever

    Hey man, we're in Michigan too! This is our second year homesteading and learning a lot from yours and other's videos. Anyway, I love the idea of the compost bins in the coop but do you have problems with them perching on top of it and flying out? We have a 5' fence and worried about that potential drawback.

    Do you have to cover the compost bin over the winter?

    • @flatsville9343
      @flatsville9343 8 месяцев назад

      Sean from Edible Acres on You Tube had a somewhat ramshackle poly structure where he piles "fresh" compost waste for his chickens to work at over winter. The decomp of the sheer mass keeps it toasty in there for the girls (steaming) & he is able to over winter a significant population of red wigglers which work the compost as well & feed the chickens.

    Have you had any issues with feeding your chickens apples or potatoes? I heard that the apple seeds are bad for them and that you should not feed them potatoes either.

    • @AcresOfAdventure
      @AcresOfAdventure  Год назад +2

      I think they ignore the potatoes to be honest and never seen a problem with apples

      I give my chickens whole apples and they know which part they can’t eat, they’re very intuitive and they’ll just leave those parts to compost! Chickens are amazing!
