HOG HUNTING WITH DOGS

  • The tradition of hunting pigs with dogs can be traced back to early America when settlers and farmers commonly free-ranged their livestock. In order to distinguish ownership of their livestock, individuals or families would apply a unique mark - usually a series of splits or notches - to the ear or ears of individual animals. Free-ranging pigs usually were rounded up and “marked” twice per year, and the use of dogs to locate, bay, and catch these pigs made the task much easier.

    Also, I appreciate how he gave respect to the tracking/baying dogs. While catch dogs are usually the stars of the show and are important in detaining the hog, the tracking/bay dogs do actually complete the majority of the work. It is more time consuming and tiring to be them. They have to pick up a scent, follow the scent, chase down a hog, bay the hog, and then alert both the hunters and catch dogs. While the catch dogs do what most dogs would not do, the hog has already been found, which means the catch dog can go right to the location and take care of business without having to spend so much time wondering around through the brush and in the heat. Also, keep in mind that most tracking dogs are not given vests since they are not the ones that go in and face the hog, so if they are attacked out there, they have a higher chance of getting seriously hurt.

    Hog hunting to catch and hold hogs is mighty fine work for dogs such as bull terriers and especially bulldogs (pit bulls). Rather than folks putting their dogs against each other to test their grit, they can have their dogs face rough critters to put food on the table and also help with population control. It's legal, useful work that's also challenging. And actually, catch work is something pit bulls have historically been used for. Most probably know them for being warring dogs against each other, but their service as a gripping dog is also well documented. Like Diane Jessup writes:
    “First a hunter, then a butcher's dog, then a baiter, then a dog fighter, pit bulls which display behavior typical of their heritage are gripping dogs; they come from a long, long genetic history which dictates they get a hold and HANG ON! This behavior saved their life during the years they were hunting boar, stag and bear, and also stood them in good stead when they moved on to working bulls, bears and other animals in baiting sports. This same behavior can work to make breaking up a fight quite easy and safe."

      Agreed. This is ethical work for bull dogs. What they were originally for. Breeding for less dog aggression would save many lives in these breeds.

    • @Swell_Character
      @Swell_Character 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@michelleturner6865 I agree with that, buddy. Even folks like Diane Jessup admit that dog aggression can be a real hassle at time. There really isn't much utility for it outside of the ring. If folks are able to have their dog go to war with another critter to test their grit, it would still allow bulldogs to remain standard without breeding them to be so gung-ho to go to war with other dogs.

      @@Swell_Characterdefinitely, I would have a bull and terrier type of some sort again straight away if there was a lot higher chance of no dog aggression , I love there more compact tough physique compared to Mastiffs which I lean more towards now, Mastiffs don’t need much exercise and I’ve never had a dog aggressive one , plenty of socialising though

    Its refreshing to see/hear someone who takes care of/feeds, breeds for specific traits/capabilities, trains & exercises, knows their different barks/signs so well is awesome and is how it should always be. Having a well rounded team of dogs set up how his are is also impressive & refreshing to see/hear. First time seeing someone use bull terriers as catch dogs with pitbulls which is cool & shows what a well bred, trained, fed etc dog is capable of!

    Great to see Bull terriers being used, Bullies were the backbone of my pack when I hunted for a living here in Australia & are real hard arse holding dogs but also cross really well to create all round pig dogs, The best crosses I've used are Bully x Staghound & Bully x Dane in straight cross every pup turned out really good from those crosses.

Your 50 pound dogs, Some of those hogs get up to 400 pounds. Watching these hogs get mauled is horrible. I understand they are an invasive species, but nothing deserves to be killed in that manner.
