THE PRESA CANARIO DOG YOU DIDN'T KNOW WAS A PRESA

  • Traditionally used for herding cattle, its intimidating appearance and hyper-awareness make the Presa Canario an ideal guard dog. Also known as the "Canary Dog of Prey," the breed is said to date back to the 15th and 16th centuries after the conquest of the Canary Islands when larger dogs would serve the very important roles of guarding farms, working cattle, and even exterminating wild or stray dogs.

"By socializing, I don't mean letting people come touch your dog, pet your dog...Socializing to me is being around people...So they don't have to be super friendly, but they do have to know to remain neutral around crowds and people"

Absolutely socializing your dog to behave in all situations saves the dogs life if they bite something they could be put down to me a dog without fear and good manners good health and no hip problems is a must for all of that...I mean to me a beautiful dog don't have to be a show type looking dog for it to be perfect in my eyes I like the bigger than average but temperament health and confidence is my check list

What did you find made the Presa unique above other similar breeds? I have a bandog and I'm somewhat unimpressed with them for protection work. Makes me skeptical of any catch dog type for protection work.

    • @CompleteK9Canada
      @CompleteK9Canada 3 года назад +7

@@jfkst1 unfortunately bandogs nowadays are being bred by so many from not so great blood. So many purchase them for protection and find out they are just not what they are hyped up to be. Just like most protection type breeds. What I found in the few presas I did have and 1 presa x ab was incredible nerves from day 1, no fear periods at all. Nerves are probably the hardest thing to breed for in any breed and definitely lacking in mastiff types. The presa reminds me of a perfect bull mastiff type. Drivey and tenacious like a bulldog with similar gripping traits and a good amount of defense. I found they were easy to do protection with, and didn’t require lots of building up like some of the other breeds I have owned and shut off nicely when done.

Just lost my 12st pressa to heat stroke ,in England we don't usually get temperatures over 80 and we have just had a heat wave near 100° and even though I didn't take her out in the day, she was allowed to go in and out as she pleases, it's broken me I'm hurting hard ,raised her from 7 weeks, she was only 3 and just got her perfect and she had found her place .
I'm a master carpenter/joiner and I can build, fix, modify most things but I couldn't fix and repair my big girl got her perfect, she was badass and she's gone for ever ,never coming back and I can't do anything to change it still hoping to wake up from a really bad dream. Anyway your knowledge is class and watching your videos, I've learned hell of a lot from you.

One rhing to consider is that the canary islands are well, islands xd presas are breed both in gran canaria and Tenerife and the lines are historically different but yes, the majorero is the foundation of them both. As I got it explained at least in Tenerife where my uncle lives there are two types known as coastal, with thinner hair and more like a bull like dog and mountain or rustic that are more mastiff like with thicker hair and all.

The Fci is based in Brussels but the standard was written in Spain, and translated into English by Spanish people. Dogo Canario and Presa Canario are the same breed. I guess piebald was always in the breed, those dogs are just not shown but are being bred so that's why the colour keeps popping up. Blue probably comes from cane corso, neo, great dane or amstaff

They bring their dogs to protect "summer villages",second homes, hotels... So dogs were mixed mainly for acclimate or naturalize or just because there are no other of the same breed so they just find a local big male or female for puppies (example of that majorero, alano or spanish mastiff...). Yo Zeke Nice Work!! You know this video is going to have some colorful remarks...
That's why I'm staying in my lane within the breed. So many unofficial experts, if you have not been around this breed for several years you'll probably get caught up in the "I'm right group". Color has been one the issues that has made some kennels do a 180 on trying breed out the blue, gray, and white in the presa's coat.
You know a Presa when you see one!! This is my breed choice. I've had presa's since 2009. I've been around the breed and researching the breed since early 1998. I've been through 11 presa's. Most of them are still within my family. I currently have two males. one 8yr and one that will soon be 4yrs old and NO I NEVER LEAVE THEM ALONE TOGETHER WHEN WE LEAVE THE HOUSE.
Don't get caught up in the hype, especially if you're not working this breed. Do your home work and talk to different breeders. Talk with the trainers who've been doing protection work with this breed.
Most of them will tell you the truth. There's a lot of dogs labeled protection line but I've seen a decoy make a Presa run off and leave his owner. That guy has a much better presa now. LOL!!
I'm just saying I've had some very good presa's and I've had some not so good. Know what you want your dog to do. Then get help getting your dog there. A good trainer will train you and help you communicate with your dog

Form must always follow Function. A dog must possess the physical attributes, sound orthopedics, musculoskeletal and neuromuscular development, proper dentition, appropriate coat, tolerance of ambient temperature ranges and extremes to which it will be exposed, and of course temperament to effectively perform the critical demands and essential functions that it will encounter both routinely and occasionally. A Live Stock Guardian Dog should possess an advanced Defense Drive, but not a Prey Drive, whereas, dogs used as attack dogs generally possess an advanced Prey Drive that is used to train and facilitate the Attack.

My presa has no chill. He doesn’t know you and he lets you know of his intentions to end you. So unfortunately I had to take precautions in the case I die before he does. There’s only 1 person on the planet that could take him.

Do they bite and kill like a pit or bite and hold should they go after someone? I wouldn't want to bring anything into my home that behaves like a pit or rottweiler. Those are two breeds I don't trust due to their unpredictable nature. They have their place, but it won't be at my place or around my kids.

My Presa is an idiot, he's scared to death of the hoover lol.
I love him dearly and although he's a powerful Presa Canario and an amazing guard dog he's also a loved family couch potato, ive taught sit stay give paw but i didn't want a dog thats hard to control etc so i dont allow any kind of aggression towards anything or anyone, all i allow is him to bark if the door bell goes, he's a BIG goofball and a genuine ambassador for the breed to prove these dogs CAN be goofy family pets if you raise them with love and discipline.....!
Best breed in the world in my humble BIASED opinion..

This was really interesting. I never knew some of these things about Presas. And I. believe them. Sounds like some truths that don't concern themselves with cowtowing to conformation registries, and explains how the dogs have changed. I loved seeing a Pied dog backed up by an old pic of a similar dog. And I love his dog's leg length. Pretty cool.

I rescued a brindle puppy that was supposedly a "great dane". Turns out he's a 60%Presa 38% American Bulldog and 1%Mastiff %1 Boxer. Never heard of the Presa Breed before adopting him. Would this mix be considered a bandog? He's a beast. I love him. I believe he's a bit taller than the pure bred presas and a little lighter. Super athletic and strong. Had to learn how to properly train a dog reallllll quick with all that energy.
