Alpinestars Toucan review and Sidi Adventure comparison, the best ADV and Dual Sport boots compared?

- I've been riding with Alpinestars Toucans over the last year, most my rides entail green lanes so I wanted a boot that gives protection, water proofness and some degree of flexibilty.
I came off my f800 the other day and squashed my ankle a bit.... Prompted me to do a review of my boots and I've also bought a pair a Sidi Adventure 2 as they have good ankle support, one concern for me with the Sidis is the toe, does anyone have a pair? If so do the toes stay stiff and protective or do they soften up over time?
A few peole I ride with use MX boots, I have in the past. I find them too stiff and are horrible when you hit a river crossing or ford as they just instantly fill with water, even with waterproof socks on you have horribly cold feet and that squelchy feeling all day thereafter.
MX boots take ages to dry when sodden, waterproof boots do not, another boon.
The Daytona Trans Tourman is the boot I was explaining with a toe insert to stop the Gore-Tex lining wearing through at the toes.

Out my league for pruchase but I'll glady take a pair on loan to test. Size 10.5 or 11 please!
I hope this video is of use. I feel I'm getting more relaxed in front of a camera, I don't want to fall in the trap of looking like a manufaturer video with no detail or 'meat' to my ramblings.
All the best
Ash
Great comparison, I have found you after already narrowing down the boot choice in searching for adventure type boots, and you gave me a qualified an non-biased tips for final decision :-). Subscribed!
Nice one, I'm glad my ramblings are of use to someone. I'll be doing more vids soon
Great review, Cheers mate. Was getting the toucans but after seeing the ankle protection im going with the sidi due to my old ankle dislocation injury so best protection needed.
Cheers!
Sorry I didint see this, how are the Sidi treating you?
My adventures have lasted 7 years still going, 5 days a week use , but only for commuting and dont walk far in them. Was considering the toucan to switch up a bit but ill go with adv2, thanks to you showing about the ankle. Years ago had a foot crushed hard by an errant motorist and ever since, boots are a top priority. thanks again
Aye, I'm settled until the sidi nice, although if I had the dollar I'd go for the rev it 500 quidders!
Nice review, thanks. Which ones do you prefer? I'm in the process of deciding between the two.
Oooo, tough one. I think the Sidi's, if you bust your ankles then you're cream crackered and the Sidi probably best prevent this!
Really good review mate! I have got the KTM version of the Toucan but don’t really like em so will check out the Sidi Adventures. Did you check out the Forma Adventure Boots? Any recommendations for trail gloves? Cheers👍
Thanks Tim for taking the time to post on my video.
If the fit of the Toucans is bothering you I imagine they're too wide? If so the Sidis are a good bet, they're narrower in fit by a fair bit and they're not as 'frumpy' to walk in. I've had Forma Terra boots and I felt they were too soft, the Forma Adventure are way too soft..... In my opinion if you come off on a big bike and get your leg underneath as it goes down you'll be in trouble. I haven't these boots in my possession otherwise I could compare them for you.
On gloves, I wear lightweight Alpinestars SMX gloves, the bar muffs let me get away with this even in winter. I also wear windproof zucci gloves that are for MTB use really, I'll get shot for fessing up on that one.
I've not found a perfect glove!
The Garage Hermit My favo glove is Revit dominator GTX, so comfy!
Could i also ask if you don't mind. Whats the sizing like on them? did you size up or down or just your normal size?
Cheers Mike
I went for normal size on the Alpinestars and go a size up on the Sidi for phat pheet!
Nice review. Thanks, Which gives more protection to the medial part of the lower leg?
I'd have to give it to the sidi as the ankle support covers and protects around the medial malleolus whereas the alpinestars is just fairly unprotected in comparison there.
Both boots are otherwise just thick rubber/microfibre martial around the rest of the leg in this area. Better than nothing but not as solid as a mx boot.
Does that help at all?
Yes. Thanks. Sounds like neither protect the lower leg very well. I was injured by the foot peg in the lower leg.
Just came across this review. I am torn between the tech 7 enduro, toucans and the Sidi 2 adventure. I am a size 10 in the Alpinestars should I size up for the SIDI? Brilliant ramblings!
Yes, size up if you have wide feet, I've got size 12 UK sidi adventures, but I wear 10.5 and 11 shoes/boots otherwise. Italians have narrow feet or would seem!
@@ashleywrichardson thanks much! Will do that
The Sidi Adventure 2s are incredibly stiff, difficult to walk in, difficult to shift with, and squeak like crazy. They are, however, waterproof and bomb proof. Mine rubbed against my ankles quite a bit, so they weren't the most comfortable (I needed to adjust the straps a bit more). I liked that they were fairly narrow since I have extremely narrow feet. They also have a great lug sole. I probably didn't give them enough time on the bike before I sold them.
I see what your saying, I think they are stiff but still comfy. You can prevent squeak with a tickle of silicone spray now and again.
@@thegaragehermit7227 I'm considering either the Alpinestars Toucan or the Tech 7 Enduro Drystar. Both have been well-reviewed and seem to provide ample ankle protection.
@@Fototherapist the tech 7! Unless you need to walk anywhere?
Hi, Thanks for a lot of information. In which of them the leg sweats less? Did these Toucan small holes help to dissipate heat?
I'd say the toucans are not as sweaty in hotter climates, bearing in mind hottest I've ridden in is about 25 degrees c
I have Daytona trans open GTX boots. I have them 13 years. Still going strong. I use them on road during winter and going touring. They were very dear, but I've got my money's worth at this stage.
Nice, they've the metal toe caps like a proper enduro boot? I like the look of the trans tour man as well. Have you had them resoled at all?
@@thegaragehermit7227 I'm still unbelievably on the original soles. The metal toe caps are no longer with us and easily make contact with the road. I was going to get them resoled but they owe me nothing at this stage. I usually use other boots in the summer. They are still waterproof, but I'm not peddling through streams in them
@@Mtbjitsu sounds like a lucious pair of boots!
Looking to buy some new adventure boot, it’s between these two. Still not sure
Does it still make sense to go for a toucan over a Tcx Baja GTX or maybe a forma Adv Hdry ? & yes btw, the toucans can be used with a MX pants & we can enjoy some dual sport riding in them ? It won’t look weird with a MX pant ??
Depends what you want from a boot, the tcx and especially the Forma are 'soft' boots, they haven't a great deal of support, but they are (probably) more comfortable out the box, I've a pair of Forma Adventure to try at the moment, they are very comfortable!
I think the Toucans will look OK with an mx pant and they're kinda mx styled, just not as high with less reinforcements. You're asking a guy who doesn't really care how he looks!
Toucans and sidi adventure 2 are some of the best all round boots I reckon for comfort, protection and they're waterproof... To boot!
I can see why the Forma Adventure get such a following, however they're more a well treaded road boot with a high cuff... I feel like I'm dancing with the devil wearing them, my ankles are scared for themselves!
@@thegaragehermit7227 LoL. True said brother. I am confused between few brands cuz AS have a good R&D but as they get their products manufactured from many manufacturers outside Italy, heard that it’s getting manufactured now in China or Vietnam or somewhere. While Forma & TCX are being manufactured in Romania. I just need to make sure that the Toucan will hold up for a good time in both touring & mild offroads for a couple of years & can give good protection while looking good too. 😎
I'm not sure what you've said there as I'm not good with the Russian but.... I think tech 7 are really good if you want the best protection
So how is/was your experience with the Sidi Adventure boots?
They're luscious..... Still got them but I've been riding a lot, lot less..... Big comeback soon though!
Looking into getting my first pair of boots and I’m torn between the tech 7s and the Toucans. On one end I want maximum protection, but I also want a boot I can walk around in without too much trouble
I'm on Sidi Adventures, I think they offer the best compromise of support, ankle protection and comfort. I'd love to try them new Rev-it 500 quid top end banana ramas.
Tech 7 drystar are worth a look, they're very stiff!
My only thing between the toucans and the tech 7 dry star I hear the gore tech is a lot better breathable and waterproof.
What about walking around? I plan on a very long trip which will be 50% tarmac and 50% off-road. In any event, its a long trip so I will be walking tons as much as riding.
Cold Gecko They are useless for walking any distance in. Take something to change into for walking.
For me, the Sidi are more walk orientated out of the two!
I’m a size between 8 and 8 and half
In shoes, should I go
For size 9 or 10 in the sidi adventure 2?
Which of these boots would you personally prefer, the alpinestars or sidi?
I’m torn between the sidi adventure, alpinestars Corozal
If you’ve got wide feet go a full size bigger than your shoe size, if you’ve normal feet, half a size and narrow Italian feet go for your normal size.
I’m no expert mind. But they are slim fitting!
Oh, and I’ve stuck with the Sidis in the end! Overall a better bootie for me, better ankle support and just nice to ride in!
They don’t do half size like 9 and half ,
Since my feet are 8 and half, would size 9 be ok? Think my feet are normal, the calf looks tight.small on the sidi
Another question did the sidi ever break
In to loosen up or still as stiff from new
I want to try the sidis but I have a somewhat wide foot I heard they are narrow is this true
It is indeed, I have a UK 12 size pair. I've had to go up a size and a half for them to fit my width of trotter. I'm normally a 10.5...sometimes an 11 to accommodate the width
Reference the gortex on toenails. I can confirm and I do cut my toenails.
Happened on a pair of merrel shoes .
Must be a gortex weakness lol
I think we should film our toes to prove the nails have been cut....
@@ashleywrichardson lol you’re right.
Put them on top to see how they look
You want me to model them?
How heavy is it ?
My head weighs, probably 10kg, as it's massive, is that what you're after?
@@thegaragehermit7227 😂 sure. That’ll do
@@monkeybutt9944 Ha, sorry, I'll get the weight of the sidi tomorrow but I've flogged the Toucans!
👍
Just had to comment this.the toucans are stiffer than sidi adventure 2 boots. I have the toucans, but thought about buying sidi adventure boots.. they bend way more easy than the toucans. Put some muscle in it, mister. You didn´t Even bend them. The toucans are better. Wider, stiffer and they have way better buckles
I'll get on the gainz train and really muscle them about next time
Nice Audio
