To everybody commenting that these need brackish water.....they don’t. In fact brackish water can actually be harmful to pea puffers. They originate from sluggish, heavily planted waters in India. They are one of the only true freshwater pufferfish.
@Kim Mcilwain: I have a question, my mate has an aquarium, but no fish at the moment. Only plants etc and many dwarf snails. No hurry to get the red eye puffer fish. He wants to know if a solitaire red eye could live together in a 1.50 aquarium with the common yabby full grown. It will be more a planted tank and just 2 species. Hope you could help me. I had gravel before I had the puffers so I don't know really. They tend to stay away from the bottom anyway in my tank so I don't supposes it really matters. Just make sure you have some live plants in there and plenty of cover for them. They act more naturally that way - cruising around the leaves etc. Be careful that they don't get sucked into your filter! - make sure they can't get near the filter intake as they haver a tendency to peck at things and get too close.
I have two b as babies on my community tank with guppies and endlers. With alot of moss and hiding places They are doing great with them. I also have leopard puffers those are very bigger. I did some marine salt with them. They get along good with gold barbs
They are a scaleless fish and therefore prone to being cut and sliced easily. It is recommended that even larger sands aren't used as its too abrasive for them as they like to burrow. But from what ive seen, all my LFS keep them in gravel, myself I will probably get a couple this week and my tanks have ecocomplete in them, and black sand in the 5.5 that i plan on being species only for a single puffer.
All of my tetras have bites out of their tails. I have a 20 gallon tank too with like 20 fish and plenty of room/plants/hiding. He is even biting guppies and dwarf gourami's (10x the size of this guy). Gotta take my puffer back before things show up dead. Everything is alive after owning it for 3 days but he is very aggressive. Also, he won't eat dried blood worms, just frozen ones.
Im sorry to say this but your tank is just to cramped for him. If you really want a puffer give some of your schooling fish to your friend or start up a new tank.
I keep a small group In my community tank, constantly keeping an eye on them but so far they seem to happy enough with the other fish, happy to join in and come out of the bushes to hunt for bloodworm with the other fish (platy's, guppys, Corys kuhli's and pleco's) only time will tell though I guess and constantly being cautious with them, spare tank avaliable if tides change!
+Bassydix I have had good luck as well. My 3 adult dwarf puffers had to be moved to my 75 gallon tank when theirs developed a crack. They have lived with many tetra of all sizes with no issues for over 6 months. I think they get a bad rap
These puffers do not require brackish water. I have a 55 gal community tank with 2 puffers, 10 tiger barbs, 1 Bala shark, 1 Gourami, and a Chinese algae eater..... they have done excellent for over a year. I am going to be re-homing the Bala shark to a 125 gal tank .... after the tank cycles. The Bala is still relatively small about 4-1/2 inches. These Indian dwarf puffers are so unique. Study them FIRST before buying them ....
They can be, but as long as they can establish territory and proper food is sourced, they are capable of living relatively peacefully in a species only tank. It is recommended 1 male to at least 3 to 4 females with at least 5 gallons per fish. They also tend to be messy eaters, another reason for the extensive space for such a tiny awesome little fish.

WhirlWind my female didn't harass any fish in my community tank as long as there's plants and rocks preferably real ones they stick to their own but the males will for sure harass all of them I got a second one to add for a friend and my other puffer disliked him

Well, I bought 2 of these guys and they started biting the fins off of my prized German Blue rams, who were much, much bigger than these guys... GBR's are fairly aggressive fish but were terrified of these 2 baby dwarf puffers. They literally attacked my GBR's at night when it was dark... I took them back... They are cute but have teeth!
+Mike Kollin so I went ahead and bought 2 dwarf puffers about 3 days after I posted this comment. So I've had them for almost a month. And so far everything is working out and everybody is peaceful. This tank is next to my desk so I keep a close eye on it and I have never seen any bad behavior coming from them yet. But if something happens I'll be sure to put them in a different tank or bring them back
I think the fish you have with them are more mobile... as in move away faster, etc... and smaller.... Glad your puffers are working for you. I really think they are cute and very curious little guys.,.. I might start another tank and get these guys again... but they bit my GBRs lower fins 1/2 off in 1 night... So they had to go... :) Good luck!
+Mike Kollin thanks! I got the tank, guppy, and swordtail for free. I originally had a plan to make it just dwarf puffers but did research and heard they were aggressive so I got cherry barbs and Otto catfish. But then I found some peaceful looking dps and decided to get them.
I find that fish are a lot like people in the sense they can have different personalities within the same species.... so if they are working, good for you...
+Laura M NOT with dwarf puffers. These fish are barely an inch long at adult size. Their beaks DO grow so they require snails to be supplemented in their diet. So if you dont like snails dont get a dwarf puffer. Their beaks will naturally wear down if they have a constant supply of baby snails to munch on.
+Dobedooo No, they will eat your gouramis one sand particle size at a time. I have raised over 50 of these little boogers and they all have different personalities. Some were very docile, others literally would bite me when I cleaned the glass. IF you want tank mates, choose a non aggressive fast schooling fish. Neon tetras would be best.
***** I did, it didn't answer my question for the part where he said "and I have a few OTHER fish in there". What are the few others?? That's why I wrote "what OTHER fish do you have in there?"
You are absolutely correct, papercandles. I apologize. I did watch the video again and didn't happen to see any other species so I guess we're back to hoping hurricane will respond. FYI, if it helps at all, two species that are quite often kept with dwarf puffers are otocinclus and bumblebee gobies.
+John Kastanos Unfortunately no species of puffer gets a long with any species of fish really. They are kind of little jerks to be honest. for the most part. Ive owned almost 50 throughout my hobby. They definitely have little tempers for being an inch long.
You mean like the dwarf/ pea/ Malabar puffers in the video above? Yes, read the description to see what all species he has together in that tank. With more fish/ species I suspect the poster would want to provide more plant cover to help the fish feel more protected. They certainly seem happy in their mixed-species tank for now! It's lovely, hurricane. Thanks!
They are very aggressive with each other and community fish if they dont have at LEAST about 5 gallons of space to itself. Young they dont display as much aggression, but mature they are mean lil jerks.
Just be careful man, young this guys seem harmless. Mature they become real jerks from everything ive heard from owners. Nipping and being very territorial for their size especially.
camille swindell What differences green spotted, figure 8 and many other brackish puffers from a pea puffer is that the pea puffer is a fully freshwater fish.

I just watched a video on trimming puffer teeth. Is this mandatory?
Laura M I mean trimming puffer beak.
It is mandatory for most larger salt-water puffers but I have never heard of anyone tending to freshwater dwarf puffer teeth.
Freshwater puffers require a diet of snails. The hard shell of a snail is what grinds down their beaks.
Can they go with honey gouramis
+Dobedooo No, they will eat your gouramis one sand particle size at a time. I have raised over 50 of these little boogers and they all have different personalities. Some were very docile, others literally would bite me when I cleaned the glass. IF you want tank mates, choose a non aggressive fast schooling fish. Neon tetras would be best.
What type of sand are you using?
It's play sand.Just rinse it well and it is safe to use.
What other fish do you have in there?
Looks like he only has Neon Tetras and those Dwarf Puffers.
Read the description.
***** ok great! thank you, that is helpful. Im considering putting a tank up sometime this summer. Thanks again!
could I put a puffer in with bloon mollys
Cheyanne Frandsen definitely not
why not
Cheyanne Frandsen try it don't listen to all these sensitive fish people watch them tho to see if they can live together
can anyone please tell me if any species of puffer gets along with goldfish?
+John Kastanos Unfortunately no species of puffer gets a long with any species of fish really. They are kind of little jerks to be honest. for the most part. Ive owned almost 50 throughout my hobby. They definitely have little tempers for being an inch long.
John Kastanos mbu
beautiful
Do you knoe any puffers that are good in comunity tanks
You mean like the dwarf/ pea/ Malabar puffers in the video above? Yes, read the description to see what all species he has together in that tank. With more fish/ species I suspect the poster would want to provide more plant cover to help the fish feel more protected. They certainly seem happy in their mixed-species tank for now! It's lovely, hurricane. Thanks!
are these tropical fish?
+noodle muncher Yes, they are native to southern India. They are completely FRESHWATER. They are not brackish either as some fish stores may say.
They are very aggressive with each other and community fish if they dont have at LEAST about 5 gallons of space to itself. Young they dont display as much aggression, but mature they are mean lil jerks.
what's with the soundtrack? it's a fish tank not a fucking creepy movie
Nice vid
salt water or fresh?
fresh!!!!
Thanks mate. :)
It looks like it's grazing.
Julius Toledo it's the love theme from Hannibal The Musical
It's the 46 litre one
red, white, and blue fish is also cool. anyone one the type/name?
jsn alva the neon tetras?
Jacob Sykes oh i see, its just very blurry since the focus is on the puffer.
Oh aha, yeh they're neon tetras, unless there's something I missed lol
i see now
Just be careful man, young this guys seem harmless. Mature they become real jerks from everything ive heard from owners. Nipping and being very territorial for their size especially.
Deserves more views :/ I subbed!
despite what your LFS may say these are brackish water fish. meaning to have longevity of the fish they should be in a brackish water setup.
camille swindell What differences green spotted, figure 8 and many other brackish puffers from a pea puffer is that the pea puffer is a fully freshwater fish.
Cute
i think require brackish water when they get bigger
nope
Kenny Smith nope
Kenny Smith these don't get bigger... this is full grown. they are dwarf puffers also known as pea puffers
They are completely fresh water. 76-78°F need at least 6gallons per fish
They look super skinny
This Pufferfish might be fatter than he is when this video is recorded now
You so cute
