@@elizabethmaybrown6715 I used them too. I was surprised how quick it was to be honest! It just took ages for me to get the licence back once I sent it off with the medical form 😊
Got my first job coming up soon after passing my test. I'm not remotely worried about the driving but due to not being shown how the tacho works I've been worrying about it. Can't thank you enough for this video it's really helped 👍🏻
I wish I had seen this video before I first used a tachograph machine. I had an infringement because I entered wrong information and had to make a printout and explain at the back that I entered the wrong mode. I kept that for 28 days to clear the infringement. Thanks again, Hayley. You're doing an awesome job and I'm sure we're all grateful.
Really really really useful!! I passed my class 2 just over a month ago and although you learn about the driving time regs etc they don't actually give you ANY demonstration on how to use the tacho, Did my first bit of driving last Wednesday and really struggled to get my head around it. I start a temp to perm position tomorrow doing wholesale deliveries and I feel far more confident using the tacho after watching this! Great content keep it up
I’m the same, it’s all about the practical and this vital information seems to be missing from any training so I failed my first job interview because of it.
What a wonderful channel this is. I only found it because, at the age of 62, I've been looking into doing Class 2, then Class 1. I've only had 20+yrs to decide on this, having had the provisional category put on my licence twice before (2 x 5yrs), and not following through. Now I've done it again, and passed the hazard/theory tests and am ready for the practical training, just as all the tests and training are suspended for covid lockdowns. What perfect timing! 😒 I haven't watched every film, Hayley, but the ones I have watched I've thoroughly enjoyed. I've been driving 7.5 tonne box vehicles for all those years for a very large organisation, but I've been amazed just how much I've learned from your vlogs. Things I had no experience of or appreciated. And you're so erudite in your presentation and explanation. What a wonderful role model you are to new drivers, especially females. I would guess you were a very good teacher, as if the country can afford to lose good science teachers! Like you, I enjoy my job too, doing local stuff and when one day ends, it ends. The next day is a new experience. It's worth remembering, the bigger the lorry, the bigger the load. I'm surprised how long some of these 'C' class vehicles can be. Artics even longer. When I see a standard length artic come into our yard, I think to myself, that vehicle is three times the length of mine and takes three times the load. 45 containers to my 15. So the driver has all that to load and unload, and much longer distances to drive. Does he get three times the pay? I think not, in fact I know they don't. So we do have alot of drivers with the C+E category on their licence, but avoid those jobs, mainly because they're boring motorway 🛣 work. I think that's where you're coming from, Hayley, and that's what I'm doing too. Paying for my own training, then I can choose what I do. It's just nice to have a complete licence. Incidentally, our largest double stacker can take 98 containers I do believe, so even more work. But it does suit some drivers to do that work, and I often see quite young female drivers bringing these great long things into the yard. They manoeuvre them onto the bays with considerable skill. Practice makes perfect. To highlight some of the most enjoyable parts of your journey, I'd say watching you transform from looking a rather mousy school ma'am and Lady Labcoat in episode 1 to a tough, tattooed trucker, has been quite interesting. And yet, throughout it all, you've been informative and interesting. In many ways, you haven't stopped being a teacher. Maybe you can take the teacher out of the class room, but you can't take the classroom out of the teacher. It, and the lessons, have merely transferred to the lorry cab. That's how it seems to me anyway. I thought the interview with the company boss was quite riveting. When you sat opposite each other in that boardroom, I somehow sensed that poor man was going to get more than he bargained for. A science graduate up against a haulage boss was going to be an interesting encounter, and it didn't disappoint. You were well prepared with very good searching questions, and I was surprised how much information you elicited from him. Lots of interesting stuff I didn't know about or appreciate, and I've been a driver for 20yrs! Perhaps because we're so well looked after, I haven't needed to know. I thought at the end, when he said he thought it was going to be an interview not an inquisition, it kind of said it all. Great fun though. If I were a boss at that company, I'd be looking at you and thinking to myself, this woman can be a great asset to this company. We must use her for better things. Maybe train you up to conduct CPC courses in house, and other training. Hire you out to other companies. I think you'd be very good at it. I've attended many CPC courses, and only one came close to being made interesting, by a woman trainer who wasn't even a driver. Its a skill to be able to put these things over well, especially drivers hours which can be complex to people who have limited experience of them. I think you'd be very good at that. But, they'd have to let you carry on driving too, it's only fair. If you have your C+E licence too, respect to you. You've been there, done it, got the T-shirt. Even us aging , grizzled, grumpy, cantankerous (a right of passage for drivers by the way) drivers can't argue with that! Finally, much as I love music and have just bought a piano to learn to play, I do like your guitar collection. Do you know the 'Zager' make of guitar? They're supposed to be very nice to play. They were created by a man called Denny Zager, who, in the 1960s had a great hit song called 'In, the year 2525'. Zager & Evans they were called. Zager found playing the guitar for long periods hurt the fingers alot. His guitars cured that problem. There's quite alot about it on RUclips. I do hope you continue with your channel, even through something like Patreon, or through sponsorship. I subscribe to a few Patreon channels. They're very good. Look forward to your next installment.
Hi Kevin, thanks for the wonderful comment. I really appreciate your kind words! I have aspirations to move into CPC training or maybe transport managing, but I'm not sure the company would be interested in training me for those kind of things. It's worth asking I suppose. I don't have my C+E licence at the moment, but I would like to get it in the future. Zager is not a brand I've heard of! I haven't really been into guitars since I was about 13, I just have a dabble every so often. You take care and I look forward to reading more of your comments :)
Great video for newbies to taco’s like me! I especially liked your simple no fluff explanations and descriptions, very helpful. I’m a bus driver who recently passed my class 2 and trying to find info on this has been a mystery. Happy trucking. 👍
I’ve been driving for the same national logistics company for 20 years and I’d never come across a Stoneridge tacho before, all trucks use VDO type…..except 1 unit that must have been shipped in recently, bit of a surprise when sat in in it and saw it , I stumbled my way through it fortunately, your video has has made it clearer should I end up with that truck again 🙂
Got my first solo HGV run tomorrow in a Class 1 Tanker, thank you for all the videos Hayley, been such a help having your beginner videos for reference.
I think this IS the best basic tachograph instruction video that I have seen ( must be your teacher training). Only comment is: put the Driver card in and select other work then carry out vehicle inspection (10-20 mins). Further more there is much merit as an induction tool for new drivers at your company. "Coming up" as they said on TV : vehicle checks and load security. Great stuff!
Have struggled to find a clear and informative video on how to take a break using the tacho! I start new job next week and now feel very confident using the tachograph! Thank.you!!
Best video I’ve watched on this, starting my new career in two weeks as a C+E and this is the main thing that’s worrying me as it all seemed so complicated, you’ve just put my mind at ease 👌
Haha, found this updated version of the tacho operation :-) Manual entry approach on this unit now in there 🙂 Thanks for this, people are rarely trained on these in advance of getting out and about. Particularly if you don't work for one of the more major companies.
This is great, thanks Hayley. Really helpful. Got my very first Class 2 commercial driving job next week, and having never used a Tacho before, the video has been really helpful. As well as the video, I could do with you coming along on my first day to make sure I do it all properly!! I've got some agency work to start with, and as soon as I've done a couple of weeks i'll be alright. Just a little nervous about my first day. Done 10 years driving for the Fire Service but not driven commercially before so a lot different. I think I've got the hours sorted. Just using the Tacho for the first time and loading / unloading etc........ about to watch your Vlog 24 tips for newbies!! :)
You'll be fine, everything is a bit overwhelming at first but you'll soon get used to it. I'm here if you have any more Qs. You shouldn't have any trouble being ex fire service, they're around the same size vehicles 😊
Thank you Hayley brilliant video and explanation, I'm out in my brand new truck Monday morning with this type of Tacho in and I had absolutely no idea (until now) how to operate it, as for the manual well that might as well of been in Chinese 😂😂.Thanks again.
Hello Haley since August I've been watching your videos and was inspired to finally go for my class 2 licence, your videos have been a great encouragement to me. I've passed all theory and cpc 2 and 4. My last driving lesson is tomorrow (Monday 7th dec) and my test is Tuesday, I'm bricking it, but have thoroughly enjoyed the training process. Keep the videos coming they're great, thank you
Thank you watching this video has been invaluable to me especially when you've done a cpc training course and you have to do a manual entry for the day before 👌👍
Thanks Hayley you my girl are a super Starr in my eyes nuff respect from a old but new driver who only ever drove old disc tachos and when Cpc wasn’t a thing thank you
Thank you so much for making this video. Really helpful for us newbies. I start my new job next month doing class 2 multi drop whilst i train for C+E. This will hopefully help me understand how to use tacho's much quicker!
Good video on digi tacho As an ex agency driver etc On the first digi tacho etc where the 45 mins decreases on the screen etc if a person is doing a delivery for more than 15 mins etc that tacho usually records the driver has had a break etc and for new hgv drivers will be saying i havent had a break etc eg that was a delivery etc so you never had a break etc you ignore the fact that the tacho says you only need 30 mins etc and still make sure you have your full 45 mins break during your day you just need to make a note on print out that the first 15 break was other work and the 15 mins of otherwork was break etc which shows when you took your break etc And for new drivers it is very easy to make a mistake on manual entry etc if not concentrating whilst adding manual entry etc and heres how the mistake happens etc A driver puts their card in etc and remembers to add other work from the day before and so changes the mode from break other work etc adds the few minutes of other work etc but if they forget to end shift and switch mode to rest mode between the two shifts as they go from todays shift back in to yesterdays shift if a driver forgets to add a break the machine still thinks the driver is in the same yesterday shift and if the driver doesnt realise this before they set off for that days shift etc the tacho machine will flash requiring the driver to take a 45 mibute break about 1 houtr in to their shift because the machine in this scenario is still using tge drivers remaining driving time from the previous afternoons shift etc Then their day will go proper pearshaped fast lol Allegedly
Hayley .... Brilliant video 👍by far the easiest and simplest explanation of tachograph basics for a new driver like myself . I think for myself the Stoneridge Tacho is a bit more user friendly than the Siemens.... but that might be just me Thanks again 👍👍
Wow the best explanation ever I've done 2 runs and messed up my tachograph I won't now hopefully but knowing my luck I'll have the complicated second one shame your battery died otherwise I know this video would of explained them both in detail, but great explanation of the first xx
Isn't it ridiculous that driving schools in the UK don't demonstrate how to use the tachograph, how to use the ratchet straps, how to refill fuel, how and when to raise or lower axles, and soooo many other things?
Fortunately my training school, Mainstream, made us do 65 hours (33 lessons) of zoom lessons which covered loads of info. I've seen that this is unusual with HGV training
Absolutely ridiculous! I passed recently and have been doing a few days here and there (I’m a full time teacher so I’ve been doing some days in my holidays) and all they showed me in my training was how to put the card in! Doing this entry correctly scares me! They didn’t show me how to use ratchet straps, how to secure a load (I know some of this is covered in the theory test), how to reverse into a loading bay, etc, etc! All of this should be covered during training, especially when it cost me £2,800!
HI Haley nice comprehensive video, just a couple of points. It's important to stress that, when doing a manual entry, the date must be checked to ensure you are recording the entry against the correct date. For example if you ejected the card then had 10 minutes other work before you had a weekly rest. You would need to change the date back to the day you finished work. Also with the VDO/Continental tachograph in the second truck you completed the manual entry and said "we are now ready to drive". However at that point the manual entry was still being recorded. You can tell this by looking at the driver card symbol, at the time it resembled a square black box (next to the mode). It's only when the full driver card symbol is displayed that you can drive away, otherwise the manual entry might be lost. The full driver card symbol looks like a door with a window (but you probably knew that). But like I say very comprehensive and easy to understand.
This is a great video. When I hit 45 I needed to renew my license but I hadn’t driven for a few years so I didn’t bother, I’d only used my driver tacho card a couple of times, my employer at the time wouldn’t pay towards my CPC & so as I wasn’t actually employed as a driver I just let my class one lapse. Now six years later I’ve just redone my medical & reapplying for my license. I will still have to pay for the CPC unfortunately but I’m looking forward to driving again. It’s been over ten years since I’ve driven an artic but at least I have an idea how the tacho works now 😂
I'm glad it helped you. You'll have to crack the reversing again too! 😁 I don't know why employers don't pay for the CPC, you can't do it job without it so why isn't it a requirement like providing PPE? 🤔
Thank you for a brilliant video last time I used a tacho you used a paper disk lol 😂 just about to start driving again so thank you for training 😎👌stay safe keep the faith
Very informative video thanks .. I`ve not drove a truck for 16 years it was all analogue tacho`s then .. i used to calculate my driving time with a stopwatch .. thinking about getting back into driving again as i have lost my current job due to the covid situation looks like a lot has changed.
I drive a 5 tonne tacho van 99% of the time, but if I’m driving a domestic van the next day how do I do a manual entry on the tacho to account for my driving?
Great video Hayley. I've been on log book/domestic rules for a year and a half. Starting a new job on Monday.. Couple of questions. Do I START my first break within or COMPLETE the first break before six hours on duty, this is of course in the case of using little drive time? Are manual entries a must at the start of your shift? Fresh, unused card. Thanks again, Ryan.
START before the first 6 hours are up. No, you don't have to do manual entries. If you don't, it will assume up to the point you inserted your card you were on 'rest'.
@@TruckDriverHayley Appreciate you getting back to me. Good info, cheers. They got me to download Fleet check app, basically an app defect book. All the best on the road. Have a lovely weekend Hayley. Ryan.
So the manual entry in the beginning, if I want to add other work on to after I took my card out, then rest until the beginning of my shift, then other work until the point of card insertion, it will just keep going until it reaches the current time? So e.g. card out 13:15, finished work at 13:45, start shift at 06:00 next day, put card in at 06:10... I'd do other work til 13:45, rest until 06:00, other work until 06:10 (or whatever the current time is)
Haley your video was part of our CPC course regarding the tachograph youtube veiwing . The instructer told us about you and said look her up and subscribe , some good videos in there. 🙂
Hey up Hayley, I last used tacho in August, when I withdrew my card, but I'll be using my card again on Monday, now September when I go for my new assessment. I was wondering about me not being able to close my last shift down because I can't go back to the previous month on the down scroll, so do I go from last withdrawal to break until Monday. My last withdrawal was in August and my new manual entry is in September ..
You said that the tachograph defaults to other work when you stop at traffic lights; doesn't that count as driving, as you're still in control of the vehicle, even though stationary?
Hi hayley great vid but after u had your break and your driving time resets is there a way of knowing how much time u have driven in total during the shift
I found this very interesting and educational. But hopefully I will never need a new fangled "Tacho Card" as the old school floppy tacho disc fits in the back of the speedometer head on my lorry. It was made in 1972 and back then we were on log books and all you needed was a pen to fill it in, usually once in a blue moon! Then I think it was in 1981 it had to have a tachograph fitted by law. Anyways, I only have two payments left on the lorry now, it will soon be All mine.
Reading about tachos studying for cpc is clear but seeing someone demonstrate makes it so much easier to understand thanks Hayley

On the first digi tacho etc where the 45 mins decreases on the screen etc if a person is doing a delivery for more than 15 mins etc that tacho usually records the driver has had a break etc and for new hgv drivers will be saying i havent had a break etc eg that was a delivery etc so you never had a break etc you ignore the fact that the tacho says you only need 30 mins etc and still make sure you have your full 45 mins break during your day you just need to make a note on print out that the first 15 break was other work and the 15 mins of otherwork was break etc which shows when you took your break etc
And for new drivers it is very easy to make a mistake on manual entry etc if not concentrating whilst adding manual entry etc and heres how the mistake happens etc
A driver puts their card in etc and remembers to add other work from the day before and so changes the mode from break other work etc adds the few minutes of other work etc but if they forget to end shift and switch mode to rest mode between the two shifts as they go from todays shift back in to yesterdays shift if a driver forgets to add a break the machine still thinks the driver is in the same yesterday shift and if the driver doesnt realise this before they set off for that days shift etc the tacho machine will flash requiring the driver to take a 45 mibute break about 1 houtr in to their shift because the machine in this scenario is still using tge drivers remaining driving time from the previous afternoons shift etc
Then their day will go proper pearshaped fast lol
Allegedly
Hayley .... Brilliant video 👍by far the easiest and simplest explanation of tachograph basics for a new driver like myself . I think for myself the Stoneridge Tacho is a bit more user friendly than the Siemens.... but that might be just me
Thanks again 👍👍
Wow the best explanation ever I've done 2 runs and messed up my tachograph I won't now hopefully but knowing my luck I'll have the complicated second one shame your battery died otherwise I know this video would of explained them both in detail, but great explanation of the first xx
I'm new driver seen several vedios but couldn't understand thankyou very much for making this vedio stay blessed
Thank you.
Instructions clear and easy as A-B-C.
Awesome, clear explanation, thanks Hayley!
Thank you the last one where you ran out of battery was the one I needed to learn lol. But thanks you explain it really well.
Thanks Haley great explanation. It’s been a great help. 👍🏻
Isn't it ridiculous that driving schools in the UK don't demonstrate how to use the tachograph, how to use the ratchet straps, how to refill fuel, how and when to raise or lower axles, and soooo many other things?
You barely get taught how to go backwards lol
Fortunately my training school, Mainstream, made us do 65 hours (33 lessons) of zoom lessons which covered loads of info.
I've seen that this is unusual with HGV training
Just passed and I must admit this bit is still alien to me.
Yeah I completely agree that's why this video is brilliant they don't even learn you too undo a trailers curtain either
What a wonderful person and personality ❤
Respect and regards to you from Belgium 🇧🇪
Best explanation 👍👍👍 Well done.
Great video Hayley 👌
Another great video thank you so much
Very well explained 👍
Really useful for someone new to the job, thanks
Very helpful thank you I’ve just passed class and now awaiting to do my class 1 can’t wait to get on the road 😊
Congratulations 😁
Thanks for taking the time to do that.
That was the best tutorial. Thank you.
Great video, thanks for that.... Big thumbs up 👍
Thanks hayley, really helpful video very easy to understand specially for the beginners like me😅 cheers
Nice video Hayley thanks, stay safe 😊💪🏻🚚💓
brilliant explaining Hayley 😊👍
I,m a beginner.........this is very usefull en well told, thumps up!!!
Hayley your wasted as a truckie with all due respect…very detailed articulate with your presentations
Thank you for a brilliant video last time I used a tacho you used a paper disk lol 😂 just about to start driving again so thank you for training 😎👌stay safe keep the faith
This was really helpful - thank you 👍👍
Thanks Hayley. Great explanation. Much appreciated.
Very easy to follow. I was always told to take 16 mins, or 31 tho. Just to be sure the break has registered on the tacho?
Fantastic video. Thank you so much. It's really helped me. xx
Very informative video thanks .. I`ve not drove a truck for 16 years it was all analogue tacho`s then .. i used to calculate my driving time with a stopwatch .. thinking about getting back into driving again as i have lost my current job due to the covid situation looks like a lot has changed.
It's really easy with a digital tacho, it keeps a record of the time for you. Good luck finding a new job. All the best :)
I drive a 5 tonne tacho van 99% of the time, but if I’m driving a domestic van the next day how do I do a manual entry on the tacho to account for my driving?
Really helpful vid
Great video Hayley.
I've been on log book/domestic rules for a year and a half.
Starting a new job on Monday..
Couple of questions.
Do I START my first break within or COMPLETE the first break before six hours on duty, this is of course in the case of using little drive time?
Are manual entries a must at the start of your shift?
Fresh, unused card.
Thanks again,
Ryan.
START before the first 6 hours are up. No, you don't have to do manual entries. If you don't, it will assume up to the point you inserted your card you were on 'rest'.
@@TruckDriverHayley
Appreciate you getting back to me.
Good info, cheers.
They got me to download Fleet check app, basically an app defect book.
All the best on the road.
Have a lovely weekend Hayley.
Ryan.
Thanks Hayley this is very helpful 👍
Great video, thank you! how would you be able to tell how much your total drive time is for the day according to the taco?
Hi, great video. If you split your 45 minute break into 30 + 15 does Both 2 breaks still need to be completed before 4.5hrs of driving?
Thank you for your help Hayley
This was really helpful. Thank you 🙏🏻
So the manual entry in the beginning, if I want to add other work on to after I took my card out, then rest until the beginning of my shift, then other work until the point of card insertion, it will just keep going until it reaches the current time? So e.g. card out 13:15, finished work at 13:45, start shift at 06:00 next day, put card in at 06:10... I'd do other work til 13:45, rest until 06:00, other work until 06:10 (or whatever the current time is)
Haley your video was part of our CPC course regarding the tachograph youtube veiwing . The instructer told us about you and said look her up and subscribe , some good videos in there. 🙂
Wow, that's awesome. Where was that? 😁
@@TruckDriverHayley Gateshead LGV ( Tyne and Wear LGV) . The guy running it was compassionate about his job and saving lives . Really good tutor.
Perfect. Thanks alots. You just helped me🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮
Hey up Hayley, I last used tacho in August, when I withdrew my card, but I'll be using my card again on Monday, now September when I go for my new assessment. I was wondering about me not being able to close my last shift down because I can't go back to the previous month on the down scroll, so do I go from last withdrawal to break until Monday. My last withdrawal was in August and my new manual entry is in September ..
Very informative 👏👌👍
You said that the tachograph defaults to other work when you stop at traffic lights; doesn't that count as driving, as you're still in control of the vehicle, even though stationary?
Thanks Haley great help
Thanks a million for this. 😎
Great explanation..
Do drivers get paid for other works and break? Thank you
Helpful video, thanks 👍
Do you have a video on another type of tacho...
Hi hayley great vid but after u had your break and your driving time resets is there a way of knowing how much time u have driven in total during the shift
A print out or if you have a newer truck there's a setting to show it on the dashboard
Great explanation
I found this very interesting and educational. But hopefully I will never need a new fangled "Tacho Card" as the old school floppy tacho disc fits in the back of the speedometer head on my lorry. It was made in 1972 and back then we were on log books and all you needed was a pen to fill it in, usually once in a blue moon! Then I think it was in 1981 it had to have a tachograph fitted by law. Anyways, I only have two payments left on the lorry now, it will soon be All mine.
Good tutorial - Is the first tachograph a Stoneridge? Thanks! 🙂
Yes it was :)
Thanks for this video it's very useful
Thank you so much, really helpful.
Great explanation on the tacho.
13:50 TachoCat says meow meow meow
