I'm starting my first job after passing my CAT C licence soon and it's in a manual truck. I'm quite apprehensive due to only learning and doing my test in an auto, but this video has explained alot and makes it look less daunting. Thank you
Hi Hayley, this video is spot on as I have just passed my class 2 in an auto and you can bet your bottom dollar that my first driving job will be in a manual.
What a great tutorial on the use of a 4 over 4 gearbox. Importantly you demonstrated the importance of making progress in a road situation. I think your teaching/lecturing skills have and will stand you in good stead. I further suggest that K Transport have trainer/mentor in the making. Perhaps future videos could feature: Roadcraft, drivers hours, more advanced tacho use and safe loading. Almost DCPC stuff. Very enjoyable!
Had forgotten you'd done this video until I did a RUclips search. I had an assessment in a manual class 2 tanker this week. Dude was like we're going out in a manual. I'm a new pass, so never used one and it's my 1st assessment after passing. He talked me through it, passed my assessment, just need more experience with the gearbox. Glad to say I've got the job an all. Watched your video and it kind of makes sense now I've had a short time (1 hour) using the 4 over 4. Your video will help for when I start with the company, I can relate back to it. I've got someone with me for the 1st few days anyways to give me help and guidance
Great video im driving over 30yrs deferent times i learnt on the move by myself never thought anything about changing gears, now watching your videos now im watching how i change gears, its so good this video,
Hey Hayley. You have no idea how much I love that particular lorry (Scania). You really doing amazing job and thank you so much for taking much of your time showing us such great work. I have never driven one like that before but it is always in my dream to see myself one day driving it.
Hello Hayley, I've watched a few of these videos about how to master 4over4 gears and your has been without doubt the best I've watched well done for explaining what can be a confusing skill to master, keep up the good work.
Good luck for your test Rob! Slow and steady, take your time & you'll be fine. Assume every traffic light will turn to red on the approach. It's also better to get a minor for 'hesitating' on a roundabout than a fail for cutting somebody up. Let me know how it goes? :)
It’s well seeing that with a woman explaining the functions of a truck gearbox all we got was the facts, no macho garbage, nice one Hayley. I’m not that into trucks but my 2 1/2 year old son now wants to see all your videos, he loved it, which makes me a very happy daddy, thanks Doll, keep up the good work. ( I hope you ain’t offended by me saying Doll, just an old dudes way of talking).
Really enjoying your videos I've recently just passed class 1 C+E in an auto box had an interview for a job they have a couple of trucks with manual boxes so you've definitely brought me upto speed 😀
I love your Newcastle accent, boy do I miss a manual gearbox, most new truck are auto's, I'm really jealous watching you flip up and down the gears. Great video.
Great video. I have the same gearbox in my truck. And I'm pulling a trailer once or twice a week. It is 2 ton payliad weight and the truck carries mostly 3 ton and the lower 4 gears come into play. Mostly the truck alone I'm using the gearbox like you are now. Watching your review counter is a good tool so you run the engine in the desired torque band
The cutting out is a rev limiter It is a system where to stop you revving past a certain point and damaging the engine . Excessive revs will cause whats called valve float where the valves cant open and close fast enough and risk coming into contact with the piston then blowing up the engine . Excellent video by the way . Easily the best example of showing an 8 speeder . Easily cpc quality . Hope to meet you on the roads in and around walsall and the black country as im very local :-)
Thanks Hayley, Just saw the the truck I'll be doing my training / test in and its a 4 over 4, the only difference is its a 'slap over' instead of a switch ... ill have to search 'slap over' now .. excellent tutorial as always .
Great video, nicely explained manual transmission. Manual transmissions are still unsurpassed in certain situations on which the driver's life often depends. This was also shown on heavy passenger limousines. Greetings Hayley.

I believe the “loosing power” thing is a rev limiter to prevent the engine over revving. I’ve driven a van that did a similar thing if you didn’t get out of first pretty quickly, from memory I think it was an old shaped Vauxhall Movano.
Hi Hayley Ur little videos r a great help to me at this point in time with me still training but what does Ur partner think of u truck driving just wanting to know
This looks complicated to get used to. I’ve seen these gears in some of nessas videos too but I thought lorries were automatic. Shows how much I know lol. Great video Hayley.
Done my first class 2 lesson the other in a 2005 Volvo fl180 4over4 gear box nervous as heck but it went well reverse was grand the gears take a bit of getting used to when stoping and when to flick the switch up and down when going through the gears but after a few lessons it will be easy I think the main thing in a truck is mirrors and watching everything that’s going on around you especially bikes and motorcycles and pedestrians big difference from car van to truck but I have to say it’s brilliant to be able to drive one can’t wait for the next lesson if you have any tips Hayley they will be more than appreciated 👍🇮🇪
I'm sure you've finished your training by now? The flicking gears thing is really strange but after driving a 4 over 4 for nearly two years I often found myself trying to switch up and down in my car! Haha. All the best to you 👍🏻
So what is the Gear/Speed match? Had an assessment drive today and my instructor was ticking off my speed as I was coming down through the gears in order to cheat the lights.
hey haley, just found your channel,im in the USA,have family/friends that are truckers, but i've not ever heard of a 4 over a 4,ive heard of 5 and a 4,6 and a 4,but these are in older trucks and some are what they call a twin stick meaning 2 shifter instead of 1 and theres no switches on them like a splitter or range change switch like yours, most here now before they switched to automatic were as low as an 8LL,9-speed 10,12,13,15,highest is 18-speed,they used to have a 16-speed spicer, ours are eaton fuller,or eaton road ranger, and not sure about your trucks there but ours have a clutch brake and require double clutching to shift them up and down but most drivers float the gears where they shift without using the clutch,so great job driving these are you pulling 1 trailer or 2?
European gearbox configurations are usually 8 speed(4 over 4), 12 speed (3 over 3 with a splitter) or 16 speed (4 over 4 with a splitter). Synchronised gearboxes have been the norm since the 1980s so you just shift as you would in a car. The Eaton 12 speed twinsplit was quite popular in the mid to late 80s so there are drivers out there of a certain vintage who know their way around a crash-box.
Hayley, when skipping gears as you go up or down the gearbox, that's called Block Changing. Applies to cars, lorries and motorcycles. Gearboxs which soon run out, or only last a few metres, are generally called Close Ratio Gearbox. There isn't much difference between one gear and the next. That's why you end up skipping gears cause its not worth the effort of using them all, but it gives the ability to closely match the engines revs to given road conditions. On the A27, can't remember if its the Hangleton Interchange, there is a roundabout onto a steep downhill on ramp to the A27. In a Luton van it can just manage to go 1st straight into 6th skipping the entire box. Only possible with Sir Issac Newton's help. Automatic gearboxes are actually Torque Converters.
do you ever notice you hold the gear stick when driving your car and take turns wider due to driving the lorrys , i do these things its interesting how we change the way we drive
Hayley .. you've come a long way in a short time and now 'using them as you need them' ...... next experience will be adding a splitter (probably on your class one artics) doubling the amount of gears ...... You'll do it with practice I'm sure ...... The engine 'cutting off' is it reaching its governed rpm - the same as revving it flat out whilst standing still ...... On the 'overun' (say going down a hill loaded in a lower gear) never let the engine go past its governed rpm .... serious engine damage due to 'overspeed' can occur .... Nice to see you back on the road .... Kind regards.
Another great video Hayley, thank you. Hayley - a really basic question for you I’m sorry - I start my very first LGV agency job tomorrow. I’ve not had chance to shadow anyone so will be going completely off videos on here, and online CPC courses. The agency have asked that I ‘download’ my card at the end of shift. I am working Tue - Fri for the same company. What do they mean by this please? Do they mean printing something off the tacho or is there a machine I would need to use in the company offices? They have asked me to do this and give me the times so I get paid. Are you able to advise please? Feel daft asking them obvious questions even though they know I’m a total novice. Will know so much more by Friday!!
Hi Jim, download your card means you have to give it to someone in the office and they'll put it in a card reader machine and download the information on it. You don't need to print anything from the tacho, they'll have a record of everything digitally from the card. You need to keep a note of your start and finish times and they will use those (that can be checked with your card) to pay you. Most places will have a time sheet you can use but take a photo of it before you hand it in incase there are any pay issues. You'll be fine! I'm around on Facebook etc if you have any Qs and I'll help you. You'll find me as Truck Driver Hayley. Good luck 😊
Picked up an old Seddon BBC truck 18t with twin speed rear axle, had only driven 7.5t before so was a bit baffling plus police followed me to county border.
So if your sitting in 4th gear and you want to go to 5th can you flick the switch while in 4th then go to 5th? Or do you have to be in neutral when flicking the switch? Thanks great video btw 👍
You don't have to be in neutral when flicking the switch, but you must give it a second to change when you take it out of 4th before you move to 5th. Hope that makes sense?
How does the instructors and examiners like you changing gears while navigating a roundabout or corner, is that something they look for or do they prefer you to keep very slow and steering with two hands? Just i know how different it is driving with and without an instructor obviously.

Its more to do with Horse power of a truck best between 1400rpm to 1800 than a car 5000 plus. HP at a lower speed = more "Torque" (Pulling Power)

fairplay hayley , i like manual gears in trucks ,then have your half gears also
Another great video Hayley, thank you.
Good luck 😊
Sylvia Kristel made A film In A truck,It was called AMANUEL IN A LORRY
They prefer you to be slow and use both hands on the steering wheel. Their opinion is usually if you aren't using two hands then you're going too fast
