    Love tje advice. My dad was a hgv driver for over 30 years. I went with him every summer holidays we had to hand ball off the loads. Only once a handful of times was there a forklift. It was great. I loved every minute. I learnt a lot but the fundamentals you posted were great. 1.9. For a copy come in ❤️👍👊

      Hi ATM97, it's really hard to find work as a new driver, whatever your age. There are some companies out there that take on young new drivers - it's just finding one! If trucking is what you've got your heart set on then go for it. Don't let anyone hold you back! I'm 25 so only a bit older. 22 sounds better than 20? See it from that point of view.

    Forklift driver here, Mansfield area, I was quite surprised how friendly the hgv drivers were to me, 2 advices from a forklift driver to hgv driver, some drivers are too lazy to remove both curtains, don't be and don't ask the forklift driver to over push the pallets, some pallets simply cannot be pushed over another, asking a forklift driver to rearrange your stuff or pallets can end up being sacked.

    Re the satnav, even the truck versions can bite. Truckers Road atlas I find to be more useful, you've previewed your route first as well. Google maps is a good tip for a heads up of the yard you're going to, I always do that with a new place too. I've been trucking 12 years, still a newbie, anyone who's seen me in a yard will agree. 😉

    With the satnav really as a truck driver you must use a truck persific satnav. It is NOT safe to use a car one if you forget that you’re car sat isn’t programmed for trucks. It could lead to disaster.
    But good vid 👍
    Personally I don’t drive for company’s that film or record you in the cab, as a Tramper and as a professional we should have privacy.

  • @paulcarruthers2431
    @paulcarruthers2431 3 года назад

    The vid is a help new to artic work but not new to driving . My worst nightmare is getting lost with an artic . Guess what on the first week coming back from Birmingham I came across road closure after closure . Ended up getting lost ran out of time had to spend the night is a lay by that stunk of human pee and poo . then someone tried to break in lorry . they could not get in . they got in the fridge trailer but it was empty . ended up stuck on A47 between Wisbeach and kings Lynn. So it was a sharp leaning curve for me .Drove class 2 , Buses and 60ft tri axle coaches for 24 years . But going up to artic was easy the length was not problem . the reverse is what I'm struggling with. But the other drivers are so helpful they all say we were new once and they help you reverse. some will tell you ware you are going wrong . But on the whole a helpful video .

    I learned a hard lesson a few weeks back. Been doing HGV work for 5 months now but still learning every day. I drive Class 1, most of the time with a curtainsider on the back. When my boss said I had 'empties,' I misheard him, thinking my trailer was 'empty.' Before you know it, you're braking hard because an idiot cuts you up on a roundabout and there's bulges in both curtains. Best failsafe remedy is to throw straps over the trailer roof and ratchet them to the chassis. It's not perfect but it's better than nothing. Lesson learned: if you're trailer swapping, check if you're loaded, and always carry spare straps and ratchets. It will save you to some degree, and hopefully keep VOSA off your back too.

    Hi Hayley , its been a while so sorry for not replying sooner but been busy studying for my 2 theory tests...However I do have bad news that lately I was upgraded from my van to a 7.5 tonne wagon ….Well that was ok but I had booked my 2 tests for yesterday ( 19th) am in Harrogate but due to a late delivery in Portsmouth Friday afternoon I didn't get back to the yard until yesterday morning so I missed the test slots...i'm gutted to say the least....Right now i'm looking for new times to take both tests again , and to be honest not looking to good....
    Your video is good for some tips cos i'm also worried about the height of the cab and the length of the wagon and i'm worried i'll hit something behind me when i'm turning corners etc..
    It's good that your loving your new career. Oh by the way I used my car sat nav when I was in the 7.5 t ...not a good idea , nearly got into a pickle a few times lol.
    Don't suppose you know the longest I can wait from passing my theory tests to taking my practical?

    • @TruckDriverHayley
      @TruckDriverHayley  4 года назад

      Hi Thebatman 509, sorry to hear the bad news about missing your test dates. I hope you get them booked up soon! I booked mine in a nearby city (about 25 miles away) because the waiting time where I live was too long. I think you have 2 years to complete your practical test from the date when you pass the theory. Don't quote me on it though! The height and length is worrying at first but you get used to it. Trust me. Once you've been driving it for a couple of days you get used to the general driving, how to take the corners, etc. It's only getting in the yards, turning around, etc, that I found tricky for the first few weeks. :)

    I'd add, if you think you cant make it, don't be afraid to move forward, or move out, and start again.
    Better to have 'another go' than get stuck, or worse, bump something.

    Hi Hayley
    I passed my Category C 3 week's ago. Still working in my current job as a carer. Would you recommend joining an agency first as a new pass driver to get my foot in the door?

    Do u know any good vids 4 how to read your weight limits and how to work out how to load weight evenly if that makes sense

  • @almostanengineer
    @almostanengineer 4 года назад +1

    As a forklift driver, I can not stress enough that it’s your load, you tell us where you want it, or if somethings in your way, only an arse of a driver will complain.

      I agree with this 100% another fork lift driver loaded a lorry and the driver wasn't happy, as I happened to be passing through he very politely asked me to adjust his load so I did :) no complains just a polite question

    Hayley, this should be made compulsory viewing for any new HGV driver! Was you a teacher in a previous (professional) life by any chance? :)

      Thanks Lishy. It's not that obvious is it? One of these days I think I'll accidentally use my teacher voice on someone in the yard. Haha :)

    I like watching your videos. I do wonder why you'd give up teaching for lorry driving, but alot of people in stressful professions do. Having said that, have you seen what's been happening in Dover recently?
    I am a driver myself, getting on for 30yrs, but taking the 'C' category course at the age of 62 at the end of the month, covid permitting. We've just moved into Tier 4, so it may well get pushed back. You seem to have settled into it. Good luck to you. What were you a teacher of?

    • @TruckDriverHayley
      @TruckDriverHayley  3 года назад

      I used to teach science. I needed a change, teaching was my first job and I wanted to try something different and get away from the stress for a while. Good luck with your category C once covid allows. All the best :)

      @@TruckDriverHayley Great to hear from you. I forgot I put that post up. Since then I've watched alot more of your videos, so know alot more about your background as a science graduate and teacher. I put a longer response to the one you did on operating the tachos. I use the second one you demonstrated. You are really excellent at demonstrating and explaining things. You must have been a very good teacher. I was also impressed with the explanation of using a ratchet strap. I've never had to do that, you don't need it so much on roll on/roll off work. I've learned so much from your videos. Just watching the new one about cornering. Very astute really. When I ever get around to taking my 'C' category and test, I shall remember all this stuff. I would think the company you work for can't believe their luck having you with them. What an asset!

      Take your time. If you make a mistake, forget about it. If you keep thinking about it then you are more likely to make another mistake. Everybody starts the same so don't worry too much :)

    I noticed unfortunately then any class 2 or hgv group i join or look in, the men r quiet discouraging. When i try asking questions, i meet with rudeness, telling me this job is not for me etc. Its a shame, they say they want more women but not making them feel welcome

    • @TruckDriverHayley
      @TruckDriverHayley  3 года назад +2

      That's really unfortunate, most people I've come across (in person) have been quite welcoming and helpful. It's easy for those kind of people to say nasty things on the Internet, but they wouldn't to your face! Don't be put off by those idiots 👍🏻

      Hiya, I haven't bought one yet because at the moment I'm driving around the same areas so I'm getting used to the roads without the satnav now. I will definitely get one in the future when I'm going further afield. All the best fellow lady driver! :)

      I found my current job very easily, there happened to be a vacancy at a local company. Nowadays, it's very difficult to find something permanent. Agencies will help but the jobs they give you can be challenging.

    I’m doing hgv training at the moment. 0 experience but this video helped. I wanted ask this may sound like a silly question but can you smoke in the cabin? I smoke fags and weed obviously il never smoke weed whilst I’m driving but fags?

      I don't know to be honest. I know I've seen some videos on RUclips where there's a no smoking sticker in the cab. I think you'd have to ask the company you end up working for really. Good luck with your training :)
