  • Hello Music Lovers!
this week my good buddy Josh Smith asked me to throw down a quick improvised 12 bar blues in the key of A, straight into the amp, no tracks no tricks.Josh is a great freaking guy and a MONSTER player and producer. Go check out his music if you haven't. All kinds of great players are jumping in on this challenge, from Joe Bonamassa to Jason Isbell. I posted up my video on my instagram after Josh's text and you guys seemed to really dig it and want a breakdown of it. So by your request heres what i was thinking through on the improvisation Enjoy!

Love your focus on the fundamentals of harmony as opposed to just showing licks. You are an amazing teacher Andy

Thank you sir! Thumbs up for Andy Wood and Josh Smith. Great players and musicians.
That 'western swing' lick is very much like some Charlie Parker lines, as well!

This lesson has showed me the importance of working with intervals, I feel like I got much more out of the lesson following a long with my guitar and picking up what I was able to play. Thanks Andy!

So I guess all the bad that’s happened to me during COVID, this is a major plus plus. Thank u man,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

six minutes in and I need to stop to comment.... I can't stress enough how helpful it is that you tell us what you are playing (sixth, flat fifth, etc) and WHY you are playing it (frames the chord etc). This is what is missing from so many teachings. Please keep it up - incredible job!

The 12 bars you played = fantastic and an absolute pleasure to listen too.
Now the break down absolutely awesome, brilliantly outlined from the first to last bar. In fact both you and Josh do a fantastic job explaining what you play.
Thank you for sharing, stay safe wish you all the best.

Andy, I have a question...whenever I use my Noise gate pedal, it cuts out my playing but all the hissing and static comes through loud and clear. Omg...i just realized that I must play so terribly that I've confused the pedal into thinking my playing WAS the "noise."

Very musical and intelligent playing. You gotta play to the chords like in bluegrass, country and jazz. Can't just mindlessly shred a scale/pattern over a minor progression
