      @@allenl9031 Yeah not quite the same there, 'flat' is referring to crankshaft setup for horizontally opposed engines, flat engines use shared crank pins for opposed pairs like a V engine, Boxer refers to those being 180 degrees apart so the pistons move opposite to each other and cancel out more of the vibrations making it smoother, both setups are still flat plane.

      but you don't really see it getting pulled into the fan, I suppose its just because of the high rpm. the pulley ratio is rather big so that fan is spinning like twice the speed of the engine

  • @TheUncleRuckus
    @TheUncleRuckus Год назад +10

    I believe the reason the fan broke is bc if you look @6:18 you can see that as you rev the engine the fan belt starts expanding quite a lot, I'm sure the belt came off the pulley and got sucked into the fan and caught between the fan blade & shroud.
    I miss this kind of content, while I like seeing these different engines being run its nice to see them do some work rather than just a static run test. Hoping for more videos like this in the future! 👍👍

    • @callumkingunderwood
      @callumkingunderwood Год назад +66

      Still wouldn't sound quite right unfortunately, Subaru and VW are specifically boxer 4's. Boxers are flat, but not all flat are boxers.
      Boxers have the opposing pistons synchronised to reach TDC/BDC at same time as each other whereas you can see on this crankshaft the piston on the left reaches TDC at the same time as the piston on the right reaching BDC

      It won‘t rumble, it‘s a flat 4, not a boxer.
      Flat 4 is basically a 180 degree V, two pistons share a crankshaft pin. Boxers have a pin for each piston, which means the movement is different.

    Rather than metal rings, probably would've made this work with teflon ones. It rides better, seals better, doesn't wear as much and there's never enough heat in such an engine to touch the teflon. Back in the day, it was my favorite method to make a very long term flying (endurance race) RC. Also, they keep using flat pistons, but just like the real deal, shaped heads have better ignition, heat distribution and compression.

The engine pistons are arranged horizontally and symmetrically on each side of a central rotating crankshaft. When operating, they move continuously and in opposite directions, transfer force to the crankshaft, helping the crankshaft to move. It’s called “boxer” because the way the pistons move is like a boxer throwing punches. You have just learned something today.

      @@bigpig187 thanks, BigPig…you sent me to school (online), where I learned from looking at crank/stroke/firing diagrams of Flat vs. Boxer engines; and I’ve been flying 4 & 6 cylinder Continental & Lycoming engines for over 25 years. I assumed all flat engines were “horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ engines,” and were all similar.
      I thought my 2.0L 914 engine was a Flat-4, since it was more VW than Porsche; and I’ve always believed VWs to be flat-4s.
      so, as a 45yr old in 2023, I now see that those mid-‘70s VWs were boxers, after that reply piqued me brain.
      *Thank You* I’m sincere & not some sarcastic YT comment section jerk

      @@corporalclegg914 Wow that's the best reply i had in years !
      Usually when i bring this up peoples just tell me "duh it's the same why are you confusing peoples ?" even when i explain that a boxer is suposed to have opposed pistons at bottom dead center at the same time.
      I think most planes are flat-4 (and 6) because the crankshaft is simpler and thus more reliable, at the cost of a less balanced engine.
      Porsche did make a flat engine but the only one i can think of is the 917's flat-12.
      Being in EU i'm not sure wich US cars are flat 4 and it's not so easy to find out even when you know what to look for. I was thinking about the Corvair but nope, it's a boxer.

    You were getting 90 watts of electricity, but the test setup was probably only around 50% efficient, with diodes dropping volts and so forth. You were probably getting a lot more, and I would think this engine should make a few HP, not?

    I just ran mine through a 3rd tank. This engine is amazing when the carbs are set right! Beautiful engine too! Though yer two cam dots faced down and it still ran. Mine were faced straight up. And it ran. This is weird.

      It will almost always run because it needs no spark timing due to the glow plugs.

      @@albinklein7680 yeah I know. Not my only nitro engine I've had. Mainly focused on valve timing. As those do need to open at a set time
