    Richard is so right about the industry side and Sungwon is so right about the caring side of the celebrity voice actor thing. When we all heard Robert Pattinson as the Heron from Boy And The Heron we KNEW how much he cared about that role, for example.

      You could give Robert Pattinson the role of a robot and somehow he'd make it the best thing. The guy could have stayed in Hollywood and become a big star but after Twilight, the guy went into a bunch of weird stuff and I respect him for that. By weird I mean indie films or films with odd casting you wouldn’t suspect him to do, yet he nails it, like his role in The Lighthouse.

    I think celebrities being in voice acting is not a bad thing ( Robin Williams being Genie is probably why they have celebrity voice actors) but having them being typecast in movies is another thing

    • @3ringstudiogaming
      @3ringstudiogaming 3 месяца назад +235

      They made a point that its the passion behind the big name voice actor that is the difference. Robin Williams put a lot of himself into his voice roles thats why its memorable. If an actor is just doing it for the money you can tell. Regardless of celebrity "star power".

    • @FigurativeCritter
      @FigurativeCritter 3 месяца назад +102

      There are also plenty of big celebrities who are very good voice actors, as well as being good on-screen actors, such as Mark Hamill (obviously), Sandra Oh, Patrick Warburton, but I think a big difference between celebrities who are voice actors and 'celebrity voice actors' is that when it's done right, they get the part because they fit the role and can do it well, and were more likely to have actually auditioned, rather than just placing a celebrity into the cast to get publicity.

    • @Anzy.99
      @Anzy.99 3 месяца назад +14

      here in Brazil you HAVE to be an actor (licensed) to be a voice actor. When you celeb cast just for fame and to put that famous person name on the poster just for attention, that's when things go wrong and it's not seen with good eyes here if that celeb actor is not at the voice acting.

    • @sam-gulch
      @sam-gulch 3 месяца назад +35

      The thing is... Robin actually had a lot of talent for VA. I like Chris Pratt and such on live TV, but they don't really achieve that animated sense of emotion. They also 100% overcast them.

    • @Roneish1996
      @Roneish1996 3 месяца назад +22

      The thing that’s important about Robin Williams and voice acting is that he also was cautious of his celebrity taking away jobs from people whose primary work is voice acting. It’s definitely a big topic and I think so much of what happens is people behind the scenes hiring big name actors to perform as characters and those actors not really having any respect or understanding of the difference between an almost entirely vocal performance and the privilege that live action acting has with all the other aspects to perform. Whenever a celebrity talks about doing voice acting or as they tend to call it ‘voice over’ they always comment on how surprised they were about how different it is to the acting they usually do and I feel like so many of the best actors ever are the under appreciated voice actors, such as Billy West, John DiMaggio, Kevin Conroy (R.I.P you fucking legend), Maurice LaMarche, Tara Strong, Tress MacNeille and many more.
      I highly recommend people watch the documentary “I know that voice” that John DiMaggio produced which talks about voice acting so well and has some great comedic moments such as the “hi, I’m ed asner” pulls out a switch blade moment which actually was how I found out about it.
      Also shoutout to another voice actor Rob Paulsen for both his fantastic work as an actor and for his fantastic work celebrating such a wonderful group of voice actors with his podcast and the positivity that he brings to the world with the joy that he and the three guests of this video bring to the world with their work.

      Not only that, but they may very well take a blow. If AI can replicate their voices to where the average person can't distinguish it... who's to say that people who want to destroy a reputation couldn't make a "caught on tape" sort of thing, where this lovable voice actor actually called people slurs!

      What authenticity does a biological machine have over a synthetic machine, in which both are just fundamentally particles obeying the laws of physics, and there is no stance-independent, non-circular, objective prescription for any entity to have any values, or do any duty. Therefore, there's no reason why non-biological entities cannot have authenticity, nor perform at the same, nor vastly superior quality. AGI/ ASI is coming for all careers, and the "arts" is not special. There is no "heart," or "soul" in biological art, as there is no trait true of biologics, if true of hypothetical non-biologics that justifies any special pleading fallacy.

      @@archangelarielle262 Because these machines are going into a market that didn't need to be improved. When we switched from horse and carriage to cars we didn't grind up horses into a pulp to power said cars. So why should artists have their work grinded into a pulp to power a lesser product? Machines are too binary and too good at being perfect to replicate the human touch. If biological touch and authenticity didn't matter, we wouldn't be fighting for it at all, hell we'd have snuffed out the human experience centuries ago, if such a thing was needed. And its not.

      AI will never replace real voice actor, because it will the replace the human part of voice acting.
      Yes it will be getting better, but the human part will never be replaced.
      It's AI will be just be a tool in the toolbox, once gets to that point great quality but never to replicate the human part.
      Because if everyone in the industry does it, you will everything being the same thing.
      If someone use an AI to test a character on who they will sound, than contact anyone pull it off even better.
      So voice acting is not going to be automated because AI will never replace the actual voice actor.

      when I was playing Monster Hunter World and heard a voice that so distinctly sounded like the English voice of Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach (David Lodge ❤️), it became a pasttime to try to find connections between voice actors in media
      was not expecting J.K. Simmons (who I know best as Terrence Fletcher) in Baldur's Gate. honestly the american accent kinda threw me off but it was fun to see
      one person i can never pin down is Matt Mercer, who is so mainstream but I can never recognize his voice when doing such different characters. I had no clue he was Ganondorf or Minsc, only familiar with him as Mcree and from CR.
      Same with not a single part of be even beginning to think Ashly Burch played Aloy (which is wild to even conceive of with so many hours of hearing her voice as Tina in Borderlands)

People who take years upon years to master drawing, voice acting, singing, etc. and perform at high levels consistently; those are people to be inspired by and what I love. I've consistently been at older mindset of "if you can't walk on stage and do it raw or on the spot, you're not ready." True talent is creating good habits and working on it consistently with time. 34:33 I wish more people looked into this because it absolutely breaks my heart, because I was very aware of the treatment Ms. Natochenny was receiving when I was a kid and up until a certain point. Kids at my school would say the "Old Ash was better" and I knew there was one before her, but both were always great to me. A VA change didn't bother me. But then we have a bunch of fucking manchildren at the time sending death threats to a person just trying to do her job. It's not her fault whatsoever. Everytime I'd look to follow Ms. Natochenny on social media it was inevitable to see negative comments on her feed. "Bring back the old Ash" "She's not my Ash" followed by plenty of vulgar and disrespectful things I don't wish to share. If you want an example of how tremendously fucking weird people were to her, I recall a reddit thread (it may still be up idk) where a dude asked her in a convention who would win in a knife fight, her or Veronica Taylor? 😐 who the hell in their right minds asks that? That kind of stupid shit was terrible. I forgot what Ms. Natochenny responded with but I know for sure it kind of came off as depressing. Now I don't claim to know how she feels, but from the perspective of a fan who grew up with hearing her on TV, it sure feels like she was really going through a dark time.
    Another VA I do think shared a similar experience initially as well is Jason Griffith, the former voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. People were outright wishing for him to die and I think there was a certain person on RUclips doing all that threatening. People get upset over decisions outside their control, it's not either voice actors faults. They have a job to do and whether people like it or not, we have to respect that. I know Ms. Natochenny and Jason Griffith are doing a lot better now but I still wish them the very best moving forward
