I think what Jon is trying to say is that tpc is trying to create a sense of FOMO with the sets so people who like ogerpon will think that if they don't buy these cards now, they might never be in the game again. Personally I don't think this is the case, tpc is just going to print the new pokemon in the new sets while also balancing including all the other pokemon. I think in the case of eternatus and ogerpon, the special forms are tied to the in game gimmicks so it's unlikely we will see the special forms very often if at all going forward, but I don't think this is purposefully done to create sales, I think it is just the way the game is.

It doesnt mean anything for the community/hobby. Its just a business trying anything to stop from going under.

Absolutely awful for Local Game Stores, but I doubt GameStop competent enough for this to work.

    Not sure how to feel.
GameStop is notorious as far as buying low & selling retail/market rate. On the other hand I have much higher expectations/standards for a LGS & pay a premium to partake at them. GameStop can definitely fill the void of "babies first LGS". TBH a lot of LGS are grimey as hell & not a great place for kids. More aimed at adult nerds.
These GameStop cases will 100% get picked clean by LGS owners.
The GameStop people saying Trading Cards are the "future", says they are very out of touch and poorly adapting to the digital age.

This is exclusively for collectors age 10 and under who do not have adults who collect in their life. For that it can build more long term buyers who will sooner or later outgrow and outsmart what GameStop can offer.

8:06 ahhhh that makes sense. I didn't know they weren't just reselling the slabs brought in. I assumed it was just a flipping deal at first.

At least there will be nothing special in graded cards any longer. Almost everything modern will be available on price range most transactions happen. Could also slip from PSA to some other company but that's unlikely

Basil is 100% right to the gamestop storry. Sorry pokebeach. My pokemania nephew is in 1st grade, too young to watch the show but, he knows every pokemon. he immediately knew shiny foil is some of the only good ones. He even plays against his parents and knows strengths despite just learning how to read. I don't think the world were a pokelover kid doesn't know of the pokemon but loves the cheapo cards. I think the parents of that kid can easily find ebay listings selling hundreds of these for pennies or even local parents kids that would love to give them a fat stack of worthless cardboard cards for free. I know my first yugioh cards were free from a friend. I don't see how it will be any kind of viable in the US for gamestop to jump into this. I fully agree with basil

It's absolutely hilarious looking back on old movesets in games and seeing something like Xatu who only ends learning 1 psychic attack well after the main content of the game is done with. Insane right?
Also i think Justin hits the nail on the head, kids in today age are all getting on the internet super fast and become knowledgeable about way more things faster. They want sick legendary ex cards and full arts. I mean I also want those things at age 33 but oh well, something never really change.

Xatu - I think Pokemon cares a lot for the secondary market exactly because investors are buying the product now from them. They play a careful balance of printing just enough to avoid scalping now - but are very happy when their product appreciates. (As it drives sales of the product they are currently producing)

Good overview. Looking forward to your follow up on how the GameStop TCG is working. Tell grumpy guy to cheer up, as far as GameStop is concerned. You never know, you might be surprised if GameStop hits this one out of the park.

Justin is talking from a business standpoint and I don’t think Jon is looking at it that way. That’s where the disconnect is. I agree with Justin…I don’t see a big market in the singles department unless they do the surprise packs with a decent EX or 2 at a value price.

Man I wish I could've been in that discussion at the end LOL..
I personally believe Pokémon simply wants fans to live more "in the moment" when they have a TCG set focus super heavily on a new Pokémon/Gen/DLC - Obviously on a base level it's just because it's the current generation and they obviously will give the new Pokémon a bigger spotlight in their own debut era, BUT so many fans only pay attention to what they're nostalgic for, or what they played themselves when they were younger, and less about what's new/current; you can see it clearly every time a new set comes out and a Pokémon from Gens 1-4 gets an Alt Art/Special Illus Rare and they freak out and it becomes the most expensive card in the set - Battle Styles featured Urshifu but who cares about those when there's a TYRANITAR? Chilling Reign was for Calyrex but THAT BLAZIKEN, GUYS! And of course there's Evolving Skies (which was half on purpose to be fair) lol
I just personally love sets like Paldea Evolved & Twilight Masquerade more than, say, Obsidian Flames or 151 because I LOVE seeing new Pokémon get cards for the first time, or feature all their alternate forms, etc., because I know historically that most Alternate Forms don't come back later on (I'm still salty about the Forces of Nature's Therian Forms getting shafted) - tl;dr I feel like TPC just keeps "one-off gimmicks" like Ogerpon's mask forms in reserve for awhile after their introduction until they're ready to come back and be marketed all over again, which is what I assume will happen next year when Megas inevitably return for the Z-A era👀
    (Also Xatu is GREAT)

I cant imagine gamestop employees caring nor gamestop the company caring enough to make this a good, legitimate service. I doubt itll even compete with LGS. Just seems too good to be true.

Never listened before but Justin just could not take in the insights for the child population. It’s true the iPad kid generation is gonna behave more like the adult business, but as the child population continues to grow I think it will be easy money for the cards over valued to a dollar will be easy money for GameStop. But the top talker got me to follow despite the bottom person.

  • @adamcogan211

I completely disagree with Justin. We are in the minority. People who watch this channel are the minority. Justin is the minority. 9 out of 10 kids know what Pokemon is and collect it. It is even more popular than it’s ever been. Ever. And more ages and genders are playing than ever before. Everyone in my mom’s preschool/primary school/highschools that she works in for the last two decades have been into collecting and trading pokemon cards and I see more people at random trade and play events than I do at actual lgs stores or tournaments. Kids don’t care about holo’s as much as they do seeing their favourite pokemon. GameStop will make a ton off of singles/bundles alone for kids. Their money won’t come from slabs. Same with selling games. 90% of their profits have come/came from preowned sales, not selling consoles or full priced games. I dislike gamestop but I hate the gatekeeping/ignorance from Justin 10x more. He is not the target audience like I said. I get he’s sick but honestly this episode was so hard to watch because of him. If you’re going to be annoying, combative and negative the whole episode, then just sit it out. Jon was carrying this as usual. Xatu.

GameStop won't make much ground here. Locals already do what they do, but better. The fact that they only deal in slabs as well, is what makes it even funnier. Also, why didn't they just make Ogerpon a special illustration rare like the Mew from 151 UPC. Sadly, FOMO is a part of the future of the card game, it may not be Pokemon TCG's intention; however, it is definitely what is happening thanks to the investors of the hobby. Klaatu. Barada. XATU.

    • @JustInBasil
      @JustInBasil 4 месяца назад

Yeah. Gamestop won't make much ground here either and for the same reason. It's a bit part of why I was so surprised anyone was actually going to the Trade & Play events. They are dead locally.
