    Your remark "no one knows" when referencing the comment "this is the end of the world" made me think: Be wary of those who think they know! My father was a preacher of the simple gospel so I have observed those who were not...
    Yours is the one gun channel that I consistently watch. You have taught me and I appreciate the learning. A victim of the crash of 2007-09, I am 73 and not wise to take on [more] regular expenses but I tried to give "one time" donations on Patreon and could not find a provision. Maybe i missed it, I'll look again, but do not wish to set it up then cancel.
    Your intellect is obviously high but you have a humility which is uncommon for that capability. I can't figure your age because you are experienced beyond your looks. Thank you for bringing your son in (with model guns), that makes it all human. And his father seems to be a hero!

      Hello James, So good to read your post; thank you for trying to donate - I checked on Patreon and there is no provision for a one time donation - but thank you again - so much for trying! There is a link to PayPal near where it says something like "help save the channel" - you could donate there if you like. I'm not the best at all the computer things - sorry. I appreciate your kind words and sense your wisdom. The crash of 07-09 was so damaging for many; they like to do that from time to time - although it's all unnecessary. I wish you all the best.

    My dad’s youngest sister was living in Luxembourg when WWII began in 1939. She left for Belgium and stayed until the Germans invaded. Since she was an American she was finally able to convince the Germans she really was an American and so she was allowed to go to England to ride out the war. Since she spoke German and French and English was her second language in a way, that’s why the Germans didn’t believe she was an American. From the stories I heard, it was like the end of the world for the people in the path of the Blitzkrieg.

      USOG thank you. I never even knew this aunt existed until around 1960 or so. My dad never mentioned her because he thought she had died when her ship was sank in the Atlantic. Turns out she hadn’t been on that ship and nobody knew until the late 50s or early 60s. She married a GI she met in England.

    The AK (and maybe the SKS) is the only semiautomatic rifle I would expect to still be firing 200+ years from now. That said, I agree with you that simpler (bolt action, pump action or single shot) is better in this type of scenario.

    Interesting video which demonstrates that any 1 choice involves compromise. For me the compromise would be out right power - in other words I’d go with a .22 bolt action rifle. Because you can hunt with it, defend yourself with it, you’d never wear it out and you can carry a large amount of ammo without being weighed down

    I think after the initial chaos, people would end up bounding into tribes. And would be looking to get have as many people with practical skills as possible. Construction workers, farmers, engineers, nurses, doctors, soldiers etc. It's the people with the skills in say finance, or any industry that has become totally irrelevant wouldn't have much to offer. But would not be turned away necessarily. But would be knocked to the bottom of the pole and would have to learn to listen and learn, and use physical labour.
    Then conflict would turn into tribal warfare. Especially against "Tribes" which end up doing well, and working collectively for the greater good. You would have a certain part of the populous left, that would turn to theft, and murder to get resources. Just like the old days of banditry, so any tribe would have to really make defending their resources, a top priority.
    In a way, those old "Mad Max" movies, minus the theatrics would be probably close to what we would experience. I do believe that with knowledgeable people, especially engineers, etc. We would eventually rebuild, and books is a great point. Knowledge would be very valuable, and could become highly guarded items, and people. Finding a place that is defendable, highly wooded (for fuel for heat) and lot's of game with a reliable water source would be ideal.
    Highly guarded forts would be built, and in some areas concrete could be used which really isn't that hard to make, especially in areas with volcanic rock. (IE Roman Concrete) Salt would be very valuable for a preservative for meat, (as well as knowing how to build smoke houses, which isn't that hard). But we would also be at risk for old diseases coming back again, due to lack of modern medicines being produced, (IE small pox)
    And I think a lot would just die off in the first 6 months, especially people who live, grew up in large cities, as they have zero knowledge of living off the land.
    And for other weapons, I think just a normal trad bow would be key, and learning how to make arrows, strings. And knowledge on hunting with a bow would be invaluable. Get an Excalibur Crossbow, as it doesn't use cams, and buy 20 extra sets of strings and about 100 bolts. lol. Even if the firing mechanism went down. It could fairly easily be Jerry rigged to be able to shoot with some mechanical knowledge.
    It would be also back to working physically hard, (if u are able to find the calories) at staying alive every day. Hauling water, chopping wood, finding food, planting and working agriculture, etc.
    Oh and last but not least, make sure someone brings a deck of cards. No more internet to zombie ourselves on...:) Although I really enjoy "Zombifying" myself to your vids USOG. Cheers, love your channel. On of my favorites!

    The old adage goes give a man a fish he eats for a day. You teach a man to fish he eats for life. To survive it's all about having that mind set. It comes down to knowledge of working the soil, knowledge of metal working and knowledge of carpentry. It's sad that a lot of our youth's don't have this knowledge yet they can show you how to navigate your new I-phone. During a collapse scenario you are valued on what you know. Being knowledgeable with firearms and various weapons is a small piece of the puzzle. Knowing how to maintain them determines how long they last. If you look in remote places like Afghanistan or in the tribal regions of Pakistan there are these guys who manufacture firearms from scratch of reasonable quality that fire modern ammunition. They make these guns in the most primitive conditions. You can order any kind of gun you want. This is an example of what you can do if you have the knowledge and you adapt. If guys in Pakistan can build quality firearms under primitive conditions with little modern machinery then it's possible for anyone to do this. Making modern smokeless ammunition that part would be tricky. You can swage bullets and swage cases from brass. This can be done if knowledge is passed down. Tradesmen become more valuable in society more useful and wealthier than a stock broker or lawyer. This is true for farmers as well. It will be the producers that thrive not the middleman.

    A thought from part 1 about semi autos failing due to spring wear, if you notice the the action starts beating itself up due to weak springs you can block off the gas system and you have the equivalent of a straight pull bolt action. some rifles set up for rifle grenades have the ability built in like the imbel fals.

    Hi USOG,
    Would it be possible for you to do a video about gun storage some time?
    I always hear you talking about your huge collection of guns and about your vaults.
    I think it would be really interesting to see how you actually store your guns. After all it's a lot of money that wants to be stored safely and securely. I think everybody who is into collecting guns will eventually reach the point where a "off the shelf safe" will no longer fit their needs.
    Could you do such a video? It really would be interesting.

    I guess it is pretty weird but yeah I’m always thinking about these doomsday scenarios. It’s just so prevalent in movies and media. I think one of those Spanish Mausers in 308 is a good cantidate. An FR8? One of those unlikely scenarios is an armed invasion or something. And being able to reload from spent brass or even use captured enemy ammo for a Mauser is a cool idea.

    Majority of things that go wrong in the world are natural disasters and wars. My past family members have survived those as well. Wars are the worst from talking to older family members who survived the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during WWII. The Japanese occupation soldiers were brutal. They confiscated food, household goods, farm animals, and family valuables. They killed people whom they thought were against them or turned in by traitors in the community who worked for the enemy to gain better treatment or revenge. Firearms were confiscated and owners were jailed or executed.Many family members did die by either being executed or in combat resisting them. It was a very hard time to trust anyone to include people in my family or neighbors because the enemy was always playing the divide and conquer. Wars are always the worst.

      @@UnitedStatesOfGuns= These were from my relatives who survived the Japanese occupation of WWII. Today the Japanese people are wonderful and not at war with them. From their words that I remember is something close to what a society can expect from a chaotic break down of society. I also know of co-workers who survived the Yugoslavian Civil War. That is also tragic where neighbor against neighbor could happen. To be armed and prepared is essential. Like it or not. Other people don't have the best interest for you and others. This is the way the world is for centuries despite wonderous technology to make life better now. Stay strong and be aware the people around you. Thank you. I love your firearms videos.

    Depending on if a person or group would need to live independently for the foreseeable future the best gun might not be a gun at all. If a person learns how, a self bow and arrows can be made with simple hand tools that are easily carried. Being able to make fire with out a lighter or matches is important too. The one advantage of a bow is the silence. Gunfire will bring unwanted attention . The bows and arrows the Indians carried were superior to the muskets used by the earliest settlers from Europe. All guns in the long run have the same problem. Ammo no matter how much is not infinite and a person would be limited to what they can carry.

  • @johannesgh90

    These two videos are already really good, but just in case you're making a part three here are some thoughts, even though I'm no expert on firearms:
    If you want to take the long term reliability to it's logical conclusion the best gun for the end of the world may be a book on how to make good bows and arrows.
    Gaming the technicality that it should be one gun, a double barrel will last longer if you can't find parts (because 2>1) and a combination gun gives you more options with long range/short range. There are also revolvers that can accept a variety of ammunition by changing parts, which would help in dealing with ammo scarcity.
    But a more serious suggestion would be a carbine in 9 mm Parabellum because you have widely available and inexpensive ammunition that you can carry quite a bit of, but it's also center-fire so it's more reliable than .22 LR. A pistol caliber carbine should also be more manageable for inexperienced shooters than either handguns or more powerful long guns and make sense for suppressors which would be valuable in drawing as little attention as possible. Maybe the semi-auto versions of the MP5 or MP9 or even a bolt action?
    Also: What about lever-action rifles? Are they reliably faster than bolt actions and, if so, is it enough to matter?

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for this. Levers are faster than bolts - but not much faster. Pumps are the fastest manually operated action; some people can operate them faster than semis. I must have well over a hundred comments to summarize - I think I will make a part III.

    The end of the world will probably be more like the end of the world as we know it. Something may happen and we will be sent back hundreds of years in terms of technology. I have hope that humanity will prevail as we have before. I know guns will eventually be phased out of use for a number of reasons. Food harvesting, farming and preservation skills will be extremely valuable. As far as exactly what items and skills will be valuable is only a matter of speculation. Its interesting to think about, but as we all know "All skill is in vain when an angel pees in the flintlock of your musket." - Field Marshal Gebhard L. (yes I copied and pasted the quote as I could not remember exactly)

    Depending on how prepared you are, an electric car might end up outlasting the gas ones, provided it isn't damaged. An off-grid home could be designed to power an electric car with solar, wind, and/or local hydroelectric as well as use the car as a battery. Solar panels strike me as the best of the bunch for longevity, as they have no moving parts. A dry, sunny climate + solar panels + electric car, again, provided you're only fighting the environment and not other people, should last at least a decade.

      One thing about having a home with solar panels, having an electric vehicle, and being/having an electrician would be (hypothetically) all of the gas powered vehicles (with no gas) with usable and rechargeable car batteries to take back to your solar powered home. You could make a "business" that's guarded by friends with guns to charge/sell batteries with electricity to others (people able to cook food, get entertainment, communicate long distance, etc.) by bartering very useful items.

    If there is one thing that would qualify as "human nature", it is the fact that homo sapiens is a social species. We evolved the ability and the necessity of living in a community. There was really never a time when our distinct ancestors would or could thrive alone; and there likely never will be a future where our descendants would thrive alone either. Self-reliance is about taking as much of your own weight on your own shoulders as you can; but there is no sustainable way for humans to live without having other people that they can count on, and vice-versa. The “best gun” for dire times is the one in the hands of someone who's got your back.

    OMG that would be mess if that happened .. Where would a person start first ? Stay with the basics of food , water, and shelter .. If and i say if the entire grid just stops , that means everyone is on foot .. Best bet for safety is to stay in place , guard your home if you have to do that, help your neighbors if you can , strength in numbers and brainstorming ideas , what's next ? .. If you have to leave on foot for water , food or go to the forest or mountains to hunt for food that is if a person lives close ( walking distance ) to mountains , forests etc, carry what will work for a person the best , a rifle , shotgun, bow, handgun take a tool which you have ammo for and know how to use it .. I don't think any person needs to stock pile thousands of rounds of ammo but if a person does , for what reason ? If i had to stock pile any ammo it would be .22 ammo and .22 Mag ammo , with a .22 a person is not going to starve and they are light weight firearms to start with ...Now for a centerfire rifle my choice would be a 98 Mauser which will always work as long as i have ammo for it and ( how often will i need the rifle ?) a shotgun of good quality, auto loader or pump .. People should think things through , like your basics , food, water, shelter can you obtain those when needed? What do you or your family require every day to survive ? Not much when you get right down to it .. Is it a bad idea to stock pile freeze dried food ? I don't think so , i have it in 5 gallon plastic buckets along with water .. I can eat off it for 6 months and stay alive . Go from that point , what does it look like out there for some kind of a return to normal , or will it ever return to the way it was ? There is a zillion questions along with a zillion answers to them.. You did well that's a very hard topic to just have all the answers for and i sure don't ...

      A beautiful mind Teppo - but the dark ages were long and hard...if we could all somehow be better toward one another now and plan for hardship and acknowledge the frailty of our existence - maybe we could build a buffer of some kind so picking up the pieces will be easier. People are telling me that the electronic age is almost a guarantee for our eradication. Would be sad...after all this...Egypt, Greece, Rome...the Renaissance - we collectively became Icarus.

    You can make bullets too. I know this guy who melts wheel weights from cars to make his 45ACP. You can reload your own brass and “neck down” spent brass to the right size. You don’t have to go back to flintlocks either. The Martini Henry uses black powder. Or the sharps rifle. I think the 1889 Schmidt Rubbin rifle is black powder and that has a slick straight pull action. I have spare replacement parts for my guns too. A Chilean 1895 bolt action, like the one I have, is old enough that six generations of people could have used it. Probably a few more generations could use it too. You’re probably not going to be abusing that rifle anyway. It’s the end of the world not wwiii. You’ll probably only have to shoot that gun like 50 times over the course of your life for self defense and another 50 or 100 for hunting. It’s not that hard to stock pile a hundred rounds of ammo anyway.

    So you've had a few contacts over this? LOL welcome to the internet. It's where anything can be affirmed or discredited. Yes indeed books I can agree with and HAND powered tools. Books on making things like foot powered lathes, saws mallets etc. Blacksmithing and food preserving, procurement. My grandparents raised kids during the Great Depression and it was the end to them. I listened and participated in all the things they taught me. The internet and computers are great things but they have set humanity up for a major blow-out. Will it happen? If you could get some kind of priming compound you can reload AKs with heavy cast bullets and black powder and they will work for about a 100 shots or so. Blank ammunition that the military has gobs of will be overlooked at 1st but can be used for components. The desert around where I live has ammunition dating back to the early 1900s up to modern stuff all over it and most of it still works. I have fired a few 30-06 blanks from the 1930s that been laying in the elements at least since World War II I couldn't believe the primers still popped even though the cardboard mouth had rotted away long ago

    • @Olumin37
      @Olumin37 6 лет назад

      Despite that being way too much effort, it also doesn't work. Black power does not reach pressures high enough for the rifle to cycle the rounds reliably. Self-loading firearms are designed around smokeless powder. All it would be is a repeater (that would have to be cleaned every few shots).

      Obersturmbannführer I'm sure if people's life depended on it they would come up with ways to make semi autos work with black powder. It's not optimal but it can work. Playing around with homemade ammo I have got a 25 auto to cycle with compressed match powder

    • @Olumin37
      @Olumin37 6 лет назад

      That proves my point, in the AK video it did what I said it would. It does not cycle the rounds reliably and "clean up was a messy bitch". The Glock is also not gonna hold up in the long run. Also that's commercially made black powder, which is probably a little more efficient then self made stuff, which is all that would be available.

    When it comes to human nature are you more John Locke or Thomas Hobbes? Both political philosophers began their philosophies with such a thought experiment -of man in a state of nature -and questioning from that how does man ascend to civil society.
    My question to you is after the end of the world -how would you rebuild civil society and in what image? And how might the gun factor into that?
    Personally I'm more of a John Locke -and think I would look towards "communist" ideals at least in the beginning -just that in a state of nature there is no class relation -everyone will be a worker, everyone able bodied will have to work (because nature dictates this) and everything will be shared. Guns would be used to hunt, to protect everyone's equal share or to protect members from outside aggression -but the use of guns would be organized and those who know how to use them would be designated as militia and be subject to strictures. As our communist state would begin to flourish and produce surplus -classes would inevitably begin to form -in which case this communist society would need to change. Liberty would need to be fully restored -wealth is allowed to be accumulated for private means -but with the hopes that this will be tempered by everyone continuing to participate in the affairs of the state -and not let it become the plaything of a minority of elites.
    Many things could go awry but honestly I think i'd still look for people interested in such a project rather than just fully embracing the state of nature and becoming savage. Even if I ended up dying or if the community ended up falling apart.

      Hi Nick, Very thoughtful and interesting writing from you - thank you. Perhaps not quite on topic, but It seems that different behaviors in humans come at different times quickly, and the immediacy of survival factors heavily in our individual and collective behavior. I too would hope that even some small part of the reason of John Locke might prevail at least some of the time. Yet reality and history seem to show us that while we are capable of the highest levels of thought and feeling, some manner of shadow of baser, less benevolent and more irrational being follows us almost always. The rebuilding could be a severe problem, as unpredictable opportunity might overshadow effort, cooperation and other more "linear progression" thinking. I suppose the intensity of survival and a probably ever present awareness of potential violence would result in a compressed version of what we know from history. You and I and co. might rebuild for years, only to be slaughtered by someone who stumbles on an AR and several mags - in a dirt pile somewhere. Returning to your questions: I would try for controlled accumulation and greater awareness of what could be called "critical cooperation." Guns and weapons would be distributed to as many as possible; the threat of violence internal to the group being far less than the probability of violence from without. As quickly as possible groupings ought to be established and disperse yet remain close enough for cooperative defense. I could go one for too long. In short, I think many of us would shine as there is nothing more rewarding than working for others. Hopefully not too many Hobbes themes would prevail. We are good - the evidence is everywhere.

      USOG brilliant response thank you! You combine hard boiled realism with a dash of hope and that's what I admire. I may have landed too far on the optimistic side of things perhaps even with a touch of naïveté. You're right that any notion of linear progression is, I would agree fraught with problems and is never a straight forward affair.
      My question is definitely peripheral to the main topic -but my thought was this - is it futile to try to survive alone for long periods of time? After the initial 90 days might it be time to look for other people and begin rebuilding? It certainly complicates the question... as then you start thinking about what kinds of institutions you would have and what sorts of fail safes you'd have in place.
      Thanks again for your response
