Hello sweet Tiffany. I love your knit series. I’m an old poly knit sewer. Lol,,,, in the “old” days there seemed to be only one kind of knit to sew, double knit polyester and boy,, was it all the rage too!!! Lol. I once had a pink printed knit that I couldn’t seem to get to sew and someone mentioned prewashing the fabric! What? Prewashing fabric? Lol. I did and it It helped but for some reason that knit was so hard to stitch,, but when I first began sewing we never prewashed our fabrics and also cut everything on the floor too. Wow! How far we’ve come in various substrates of knits we have today. It is wonderful but also challenging too plus we also have diff threads and needles. How far we’ve come in our sewing journeys. Take care and hope the Sunday afternoon storms weren’t too close as our skies were so dark and we had hail too. Then sun, then another t storm. Today, it smells like smoke in the air and like a fog hanging over us in northern Indiana. Keep up your videos. Take care and hope your house is coming along,, almost to your moving in date?

An excellent detailed video on Knits but I would echo what Izzy said. The quality of the knit really does vary within its type. I've had wonderful cotton jersey and viscose jersey and then I've had awful pieces of it! Ponte can vary so much as well depending on price. Get the best knit fabric you can afford for beginners would be my advice. If I ever see a Linen Jersey blend now I grab that as it sews like a dream 🥰. Thanks for an enjoyable video. Great info Tiffany - I wish I had that video when I first started sewing with knits 😂 The one thing I would add is that not all knit fabrics are created equal. I’ve purchased some very low quality ponte which was not pleasant to sew or wear (very high percentage of polyester is now a red flag for me) but I’ve also recently purchased some higher quality ponte made up of rayon, nylon and some polyester and oh my goodness, the difference is huge!! Same thing for ITY. Lower quality ITY is very very slinky and thin and not pleasant to wear (it almost feels like you’re wearing plastic bottles) but some better ITY can make some really fun tee shirts and dresses and feels a lot better against the skin. Can’t wait to see the next instalment in this series! 💞

Hi Tiffany. Thanks for the ponte recommentation for pants. I'm going to have to step outside my comfort zone and give it a try. As usual, the details matter a lot and keep changing over time. Lots of great information! Since I learned how to sew knits that’s all I did for a while. Then all those cute blouse patterns came out and I ordered some wovens. I picked up a POP 100% cotton Jersey Knit Stretch fabric in the clearance section from Joann AND downloaded the PAB Dakota Dolman! Im planning to make a little comfy Christmas play dress for my daughter. Would you use the same fabric for the neckband? Thank you for this series. You are really giving me the gumption to give this a shot.
Hello, Cassie, thank you so much for watching and for such a lovely comment, it means so much! Aw, I’m so excited for you to try the Dakota Dolman, it’s such a great pattern! For the neckband, yes, you can use that same fabric for it but I would lengthen the neckband pattern piece by a little bit, maybe 1/4-1/2 in. I made Addys latest Dakota Dolman with 100% cotton jersey as well and the neckband is a little tight on her so I should’ve adjusted the neckband piece a little. Can’t wait to hear how your version turns out! Thanks for chatting with me, Cassie! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany
Thank you Tiffany - great video! Re rib knit - do you “build in” a bit more ease when using so as to avoid the dreaded “cling” or does it depend on the softness of the fabric?
Hello, Moira! So sorry, I’m just now seeing this question. For Rib Knit, I usually don’t build in any extra ease. I think it depends on the consistency of the rib knit fabric itself, that kind of tells me what I want to do with it. The versions I’ve used for main fabric for my dresses have been a more stable, thicker rib knit. A more slinky, softer rib knit would probably cling quite a bit more. Hobby Lobby carries a line of Rib Knit all the time in their garment section. I feel like it is an example of being a little more slinky, it’s pretty thin. I mostly use it for neckbands and cuffing. They also carry seasonal versions of Rib Knit in like their Spring Section and that has been more sturdy. I’ve used it for a main dress and love it! So really it kind of comes down to the fabric consistency. I could talk about rib knit all day, haha, I love sewing with it. Maybe I need to do a whole video just dedicated to Rib Knit 🥰 If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, Moira! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany
Hi Tiffany, Thank-you for your video, I found it very useful and I'm having a go with beginner knits. I have one question: how do you handle a knit (a jersey which is on the list of beginner knits) which keeps curling up around the seams?
Hello, Suzanne, thank you so much for watching and for such a kind comment, it means so much to me! Great question! For knits that curl at the edges, I like to iron them as flat as I can without stretching or damaging the fabric. Test your iron settings on a scrap if you’re not sure if the iron will melt the fabric. I also find that using the serger for the actual construction on those garments is really helpful because it finishes your seams as you sew and you then don’t have to deal with the curling anymore. Also patience and using a lot of pins when pining the two fabrics together helps as well! Hope some of these tips help you, Suzanne and thanks for this question, it would be a great video topic!😉 Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany
@@hoosierhandmade22 Hi, thank-you for your reply, I appreciate it. I do not have a serger (yet) and that's why the curly seams are a problem. I wondered how other people seemed to be able to knock out these knit garments very easily, now I know.
Hello Cindy. I have a few questions. Do you use a stretch knit needle? A stretch needle is a life saver with knits. Have you tried adjusting your tension? It may be tight and extending your stitch length or changing to a slight zig zag can help. Also, know that pulling on knits while sewing can create a wavey effect. This is called lettucing, which is often used to create a ruffled edge but can make waves in your seam if the knit is pulled when sewing seams. These waves can sometimes be steamed out with an iron. Don't give up on knits. They are amazing.
@@lesleyrosasunstoppable2381Another thing I found is to lower the pressure foot tension and use a Teflon foot if you’re using a sewing machine. On a serger, check your manual and make differential feed adjustments. Above all, don’t give up and have fun! 😊
Hello, Cindy, thank you so much for watching and for commenting, it means so much! That’s a problem I’m sure most of us who sew with knits have encountered at one point in our sewing journey. There’s some great suggestions below. For me, I find that using a stretch needle, my walking foot on my regular sewing machine and a steam iron on the hem after I’ve sewn it works really well. Also, it’s super important to not stretch the seam out as you’re sewing, hold the fabric gently and let the sewing machine pull it through. The stretch of your stitching (like a zig zag stitch) will give you the stretch you need after completing your seam. Hope these and the tips below help you out, Cindy, if you ever need any help, I’m more than happy to give your questions a go if I can! 🙂 Thanks for chatting with me! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany

I wondered how other people seemed to be able to knock out these knit garments very easily, now I know.
when I sew with knits. it gets wavy
