For this latest episode we’re on the saltwater theme, but doing something a little different, as we head to into Suffolk and to Southwold, to fish the River Blyth!
Having spent a fair bit of time in Southwold we were always curious of the river and the fish, if any, that might live there! So armed with some fresh lugworm and small hooks we headed down early morning to see if we could put a few fish on camera.
To find out a exactly how we got on and if the river did indeed hold any fish, then watch the latest episode from the waters edge…
As usual we hope you enjoy it and any feedback is always much appreciated.

Thanks for the kind comments David, glad you enjoyed the video too. :-) I wish the people who did, left a comment too! That way I'd know what they didn't like! Haha.
Nice to see you still making fishing videos.👍👍👍
Cheers Aaron, we do try when we can! :-)
Love watching this guy, no bullshit with him, just good honest fishing tips....and he is a natural on film !!
Thanks for the kind comments mate, glad you're enjoying the videos! Should have lots more to come when we're allowed back out. :-D
Glad to see you back mate, been a while! Doesn't matter what they are or what size they are as long as your enjoying it & catching something! Take it easy!
Thanks for the kind comments mate, glad you enjoyed the video. :-)
Great video Chris. Thanks. I'd have been tempted to get some rag down somewhere near the legs of that bridge just below where you were fishing, might be good spot for a bass or two.
Thanks mate! I'm definitely going to get down there again at some point, will certainly have some Ragworm too. :-)
Great, something different. 👍
You'd think that slug would learn you caught him like ten times 😂 that's why he was getting fat.
Haha! You would indeed Bob! :-D
Finally! Nice to see u again, hope wee yin grow nice.Hope to see more vids soon
Cheers mate, it's good to be back! She's getting on very well thanks, thanks for asking. :-)
Love these videos. Reminds me of as a kid fishing the river at Downham Market. Used to bag up with flounders and eels. This was on earth worms as well. This was early 80s. No idea how it fishes now.
Thanks Carl! I'm sure there's still some bits and pieces in there... it was certainly good fun and something a little different... a nice change from pin Whiting from the open beach! Haha. Be lucky, cheers Chris.
That’s ROCKLING city
Haha, it was indeed!
Wow amazed at the amount of rocking there in the winter!! Well worth doing another video in the summer that river is full of bass..
Thanks for the comment Kevin! Am definitely keen to give it another go... especially at a slightly different time of year!
I always really enjoy your productions and the time and effort you put into making them.
Thanks for the kind comments Mark! Glad to see your channel is going well too. :-)
Nice Ray a few weeks back too! ;-)
I had targeted rays on 3 separate nights and the small eye came as I was packing away on the 3rd night. 10 minutes later and I wouldn’t have caught it. Persistence paid off and I was chuffed to bits.
Fishing's a funny old game mate! Haha. You just never know whats going to happen and whats going to turn up... especially sea fishing! I think thats why I love it so much. :-)
Good to see you back fishing the salt water.
Cheers mate!
The rig is a staggered wishbone. Loads of various ways of tying them. Great vid again. Great to see fishing on the east anglia coast. I fish the open sea and the rivers regularly all round Suffolk and Essex and do occasional come up your way for a bash 👍
Thanks for the info mate, glad you enjoyed the video! :-)
Great place very muddy water I have always fancied fishing it.
Kids love crabbing here so whatever loves crab and the ham used by the kids is what you will catch.
Give it a go Alexander! :-)
My Home Town, fish in the harbour half way up in the summer, just squid, decent bass every cast 👍
Nice one Kevin, sounds perfect!
Enjoyed that mate, if you have another go try and get some crab, the claws and legs peeled make makes good flounder bait, holds up better than worm against the crabs too. Nice one!
Can even hold on hook with small rubber bands- sounds strange but does work, even with claws on, can leave hook over the body sticking out at top.
Thanks Aitch! I'm definitely keen to give it another go, when we can get back out. Learnt a lot too... would definitely fish two of those different rigs with Ragworm and on your recommendation, some crab!
Good to see you back lads 👍
Nice little video and nice to see some different tactics, tight lines for next time
Si 🎣
Thanks as always Simon! :-)
Great stuff as always!
Thanks mate!
Great video I really enjoyed it even if you only catch rocklin and Whiting and flat is good for me I'll just enjoy getting out in the air
Thanks for the kind comments mate, glad you enjoyed the video! :-)
another well produced video full of tips
Thanks as always Carl!
Nice video 👍🎣🎣. It's just good to get out , & find your mark's .
Thanks for the kind comments Andy! It was certainly nice to fish somewhere a little different... you get that slightly excited unknown feeling!
missed you guys, great video as per usual
Thanks Adam! :-)
Good to see you back, good vid as always, cheers
Cheers Johnny, glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for dropping us a comment too.
Fishing estuaries in the summer is my fave! Tiny rod with tiny reel and 2oz leads, of the bottom for bass and of the top for mullet. I actually thought you where at one of my very secret marks when I saw the video photo.
Your secret mark is just before the bridge chuck out in the real deep spot to the left of the rising bubbles near the pole
Am definitely going to give it another go Chris! Perhaps in the late spring and summer. I learnt a lot first time round. :-)
really good info and grate vid there
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it!
Love your videos. It doesn't matter what you catch.
Thanks for the kind comments Ian!
You need to upload more I love the vids!!!!!!
Thanks mate, glad you're enjoying them! :-) Hopefully we'll be back out soon.
Great stuff Chris👍
Thanks Simon! :-)
Yet again a great video as always lads I’m very fortunate just moved into a small village near Colchester and the river colne at the end of my road so this has inspired me to try this spring/summer 👍
Thanks Declen! Definitely, give it a go and let us know how you get on! :-)
From The Waters Edge TV certainly will as soon as this lockdown is off 👍👍
Good to see anoter sea angling video Chris, well done. Whatever happened to Part 2 of the challenge?
Thanks for the kind comments mate, glad you enjoyed it! What challenge do you mean?
I've fished a few small saltwater rivers and i normally use the small harbour ragworm that you find in the mud and a feeder rod with 2 size 10 hooks on a flapper rig with 1-2oz lead depending on the flow and i normally end up getting a fish a chuck, mainly small flatties and the odd whiting, rockling and schoolies, give it a go i'm sure you'll bag up.
Thanks for the info mate! I'm definitely keen to have another go and as I mentioned in the video I'd definitely be taking some ragworm and fishing some slightly different rigs.
Great stuff you got a new sub! I love on an estuary in south devon, most ive caught are a fair few good mackerel, a little gar, a couple of good flounder, tiny pollock and (my crowning achievement) a 2lb Sea Bass! You've made me get my itch back for salt water fishing. Im usually a carper! Cheers mate be lucky
Thanks for the sub George, glad you're enjoying the video's too! :-) Hopefully we can all get back out fishing again soon. Be lucky, cheers Chris.
Great video Chris. Fished there many times. I've had plenty of whiting, dogfish, slugs and eels - majority coming on squid this time of year. Good spot for bass in the summer and a chance of mullet on the bank opposite you. Not sure if the flounders are there in any numbers now.
Thanks for the feedback/info Robert! Am definitely keen to get back there and have another go at some stage. :-)
Cool multi species video!
Haha, cheers Bill!
Another cracking video. Reminds me of fishing the Teign in Devon.
Thanks Mike! Do you get plenty of fish from the Teign!?
A great river for some very good flounder.
For flatties you need way more beads, at least 10.. regularly get them to over 2lb here in the dee.
Nice one mate, a 2lb Flounder around are way would be a proper specimen!
@@FromTheWatersEdgeTV There was a time in the Dee that they were quite common, all changed now though as they seem to be less abundant, my biggest was 2lb 8oz when I was 13 haha
Yeah I agree with the view underneath👍 if you don’t like fishing 🎣 don’t watch the bloody videos! Love your vids buddy 😁😁
Cheers Gregory! :-)
Nice video mate
Thanks Ian. :-)
What about a float? I'm a total amateur
Hi Chris, what rods are you using in this video please?
Hi Brian, they’re Greys GRX-s rods. Not sure if they’re made anymore, as I’ve had them years!
Good few pointers.there, how do you avoid deep hooking them all of the time?
Thanks Will! I don't all of the time. If you wanted to avoid it, bigger hooks and hitting bites quicker would perhaps eliminate it a little.
I thought the old saying was if you catch rockling Go Home!
Haha! :-D
That used to be a decent spot for bass in the summer. No idea these days.
Thanks for the feedback Gavin, a few people have said that! I definitely want to get back down there at some point and give it another go!
I often fish the river ouse at King's Lynn and its just like that, but Ive found where ever I fish if rockling turn up then that's all you'll get sadly. But muddy water is such a challenge
Nice one Robin! Do you get some Flounder and different species too?
@@FromTheWatersEdgeTV a few dabs and occasional eel, used to be loads. Reports further up of bass and near inlets from drains many a mullet upto 8lb...
Looks like it could be a Wessex rig to me mate.
Cheers Adam, after a bit of research I think you're right. Or its certainly a version of!
What rig wallet do you use you only see it briefly in intro
Hi mate, it's an old Shakespeare wallet, probably 20 years old now! Haha.
@@FromTheWatersEdgeTV okay just looking for a new one that holds a lot of rigs as mine doesnt and yours looked good thanks anyway mate :)
What kind of rods r u using I mean Brand
They're Greys GRX-s mate. :-)
Can u pop up the baits to avoid the crabs ? Air inject or polyball... 🤔
As a coarse angler , I pop me deadbaits up when piking , to avoid crayfish...
You can use some floating beads Peter. I'm dubious if they completely pop your baits up in the tide, but a bit of buoyancy must make it harder for the crabs to get hold of!
what tent is it you use whilst beach fishing?
Its an old John Holden beach buddy mate!
I'm sure there's a reason, but why do you stare at the reel when winding in?
Probably the type of reel he uses. With those multiplier reels, you have to level out the line with your thumb. If they get one sided or spooled messily they don't work well
Those multipliers don't have a level wind Matthew, so I have to wind it on level manually, using my thumb to spread it evenly across the spool. :-)
Do you get many sea trout in the estuaries
I'm not too sure Jordan!
Do you need a rod license /permit to fish there, our local estuary requires both licenses to fish it as there is a chance of catching coarse fish 🤔
That's odd, you are legally allowed to fish up to the high water mark, if you look carefully at an OS map their are blue lines showing tidal limits.
The only problem you have is access across the land adjacent to the shore but you can walk along the shoreline between the high and low water mark to your hearts content. (As long as it is not physically impossible, eg mud obvs.)
You can kayak fish right upstream to the tidal limit.
What do you mean both? You need a license for freshwater fish but not for sea fish so there is really only one licence? Unless fishing for sea trout and salmon of course
@@petechapman7821 Exactly, if the water you fish is below the tidal limit then its legally, "The Sea".
As you say unless using methods only suitable for Salmon or Trout then you need no licences to shore fish in the sea.
Whatever you catch should be returned....
It's a bass river, black rubber sand eels either side of that bridge
Fished there lots in the past, as you say it's a Bass river, had many a good one before the ban, always took them on a dexter wedge.
Thanks for the info mate!
Do some match fishing
It's something I've debated, would love to film it too!
Yeah that would be cool
Hi just wanted to ask what sized hook should I use for small rudd
An 18 or a 16 would probably be fine mate! :-)
Lush rods and reels bud
Thanks mate!
I thought the old saying was if you catch rockling Go Home!
