Nice Thor's Hammer electrical proof testing. I just bought a 2000 F-450 with a dead glow plug relay. I live at 4500 feet and it gets very cold. A little time on the internet and it is my understanding that the OEM relay is undersized. The replacement that will last the lifetime of the vehicle is a "White Rogers 586-902" 200 amp relay. These are used for many purposes and are built tough.

“Not charging him to check the glow plugs”.
Stand up dude right there. Most shops around here would charge to check them, then replace the glow plugs, then when it still didn’t fix the problem, say...”Well, the glow plugs weren’t at optimum performance, and because of that, the glow plug relay shorted out, causing them not to work at all” 🙄

I have a 01 7.3 and found that my GPR wires that go to ignition solenoid in the harness was burned chewed and melted and the relay itself is extremely bad looking truck was ok took a hour trip and then battery light came on figured the alternator and changed it didn’t work was really cold to snowing etc kept checking things out turned out my IPR was bad or not working the sensor part was busted so changed that etc started up but not easy and damn thing wasn’t charging still ...swapped the alternator out and figured Shity parts store one etc and damn thing still wasn’t charging etc was chasing things like the signal wire on the alt with key on was only seeing 9 volts 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ idk why.... my batteries are little low etc but should still see 12v etc started looking around and found the burned chewed up ones traced them back to harness behind the a/c pump on top that went to the GPR pulled boot off the main one and severely corrosion etc rust soooooo any way to fix the burned chewed end etc snd just replace my GPR if it tests bad

Unsaid, but an intermittent condition appears to most likely be the relay only sometimes working? PCM or oil temp sensor failure would tend to be be complete, yes? Also, you're sometimes getting a click but still no power transfer. Could that click instead be the intake heater relay in the front? You mention another glow plug video but I can't find it.
My step father-in-law has been jumping 12+ power to the FRONT relay for a few seconds and then starting up successfully. He's been thinking that front relay is the glow plug relay ... but apparently he was inadvertently activating the glow plugs somehow I guess since those two relay do share some connections..

Arod, I really like your troubleshooting videos. How can I get one of those harnesses connectors to test individual glow plugs? Parts counter?
Recently you showed cranking with the baloons on the Left/Right bank fuel lines to verify a stuck open injector. I suspect leaking injector as some fuel was tested positive in the motor oil. Do you have any other ways of diagnosing injector issues without having high cost tools? I have a late '99 7.3L with just under 200k mi., also hard to start below 40F, but will start if I use the block heater.

1998 E350 here. Concerning the dashboard indicator light, with a failed glow plug relay will the dashboard indicator light still come on, or will it not come on. I'm just now beginning to start investigating why I have white smoke sometimes on startup and sometimes not.
Love the van but Damn, really hard to change those drain valve all rings! Thank goodness my 7.3 has never left me on the side of the road after 300,000 miles. Are you able to open up that relay by the way and clean up those contacts?

I told him the wait light had nothing to really due with the gp's so just turn on the key and leave it on for about a min and them start it. Call me later and said that worked.

Hi I watched a video that showed this test light method before I started working on my early 99 this week. I had 2 bad plugs show on the left side, and tested them with a battery charger when they were out. Those diagnosed correct with 2 working, the other side I had 1 not working from the light test.
I figured I'd replace all 4 while I was there as passenger side is more of an ignorant bitch to work on. when I tested them out I had 2 bad not just the one. The second one would spark when I put power to it but wouldn't heat up and glow bright orange like the other good glow plugs. My guess is if my multi meter was around the home shop this week that plug will show a reading but be out of the spec shown in this video.

Will a failed glow plug relay cause the SES (check engine) light to come on? My 2001 F250 7.3 has symptoms of cold no/hard start (have not tested relay yet) - and the SES light is on. This year of diesel did not conform to OBD standards, so a regular OBDII scan tool won't give me codes/info. (And I see 2 almost identical relays up there - you're testing on the one closest to the firewall. What is the one for that is closest to radiator - a few inches fore of the one you're testing?)

    • @PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod
      @PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod  6 лет назад +3

No it will not. An OBDII scanner will pull codes for this...also it is the intake air heater relay

    • @PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod

The module monitors the resistance of all the glow plugs and tells the PCM if one has faulted to turn the check engine light on hence California emissions

Would this cause a crank no start
    in general.
Cuz this is my problem I’ve searched all over the net & RUclips
All right I’m at my wits end with this truck it’s a 1995 Ford F3 50 7.3 dually quad cab It’s Tabs Dad he run it out of fuel twice then about a month or so it started idling rough and not really want to start in the morning that went on for about a week or so then he was driving it and then it’s hard to drive and rough just as rough as it was idling then he drove it like that for about another month and then it he started having it to where it was dying on him occasionally then we were at a stoplight one day and it died on him and took her straight home then we brought it here why I’ve been working on it
First thing we discovered it wouldn’t get enough fuel because of the tank selector valve so I tapped on it got it to work for the time being then we went to getting enough fuel pressure to the fuel bowl so we figured it he burn up the pump so we replace the tank fuel selector Valve and the fuel pump and also I took out all the injectors open them bottom part only and cleaned him come to find out one of them had a piece missing and one of them had a broken spring so I fixed it and put them back then we will get fuel to the bowl and all the cylinders were hidden but it just still wouldn’t run so I did some more research it some more tinkering and replaced die PR valve and ICP valve because my troubleshooting led me to believe that those may be a problem as well so so far it’s got a tank selector valve a brand new fuel pump ICP valve and I PR valve then we were able to scan it somehow or another we figured out that we could scan it so then we got a scanner and scan it it was saying high side was open on the driver side I’ll send u the codes
So I troubleshoot it that and found the valve cover gasket was bad and we just replaced it back last year this time so what I did was I replace them both and I did a Home reading on the entire system and I have that as well I will send you and I follow that procedure and I ohms it out 3.8 For the whole system and I double checked the IDM and everything to that seems to be OK as of yesterday it ran for about a minute and a half it chugged really bad but it ran There’s proper amount of oil and a high-pressure oil pump There is enough oil in the motor there’s proper amperage in the batteries proper voltage in the batteries had to replace the starter because I guess us trying to get it to crank over the other day her but a week ago it burned up starter so we replace the starter and I will send you the last thing it showed because now I’m having an issue to get the tester to read it For no longer works on his old vehicles and have no way to scan them so if you know anybody that has an in-depth scanner to do it it’s it takes an OBD two that’s what it’s been updated to because I don’t know what else to do we done everything that I could fine as far as troubleshooting and what I can fine as far as the half ass manual so I can get here in there
Here is a list of all I have checked or replaced:
    1) changed oil and filter, checked oil level.
    2) checked fuel bowl for the loose heater - good
    3) checked fuel filter, changed it less than 1000 miles ago
    4) check glow plugs out of the motor
    5) checked all engine compartment fuses
    6) checked wiring harness for frayed ends
    7) replaced the ECP? (front sensor)
    8) checked for oil on the ICP sensor - none
    9) replaced several CPS's

What if the PCM is not turning on the relay? How do I test the pcm? I'm not getting the click sound or no light at the relay with my test light.

So I finally figured out how my multimeter works and took some readings off of the GPR. After turning the key the glow plug terminal initially read 0. Then after about 20 seconds I heard it click and got a reading of 11+ volts. It seems weird that there would be that long of a delay between the key turning and the relay activating. Do you have any suggestions? I plan on testing the glow plugs next to see if they are within spec.

well I know the 2017 f 150 has gen two. I don't know if the explorer PI has gen two yet. the new 3.5 eco has direct injection with the old school fuel injection as well to help keep the combustion chamber s clean. kind of a a wierd set up. they probably will phase gen two ecoboost accrossed the other models later.
