The fact the show wasn't actively trying to destroy canon and classic characters went a long way with me. It respects the classic movies instead of pooping on them.

This is why so many of the fans want Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni in charge of Star Wars, it's not that they just understand how to write good stories, they know how to handle Star Wars specifically, they have exactly the right mindset when it comes to creating stories from a pre existing IP like Star Wars, unlike the directors we've been given in the past few years who don't actually care about Star Wars or the fans, and just want to write their own story and give it a Star Wars coat of paint.

I have said it again and again.. Favreau should be the boss over at Lucas and they should kick out Kennedy. And Falony should be in charge of the Creative team and story director. Those two Get the fans (old and new) AND they know and respect the source material.. I mean Falony have been putting old legends back into canon since Rebels. And even then in the Clone Wars tv show he would often put in things from Legend sources.

I’m watching Clone Wars (Season 4 right now) and I gotta say, it’s some of the best Star Wars content I’ve seen in years. Filoni and Favreau know why the franchise is what it is. Filoni wants not only to honor the fans, but he wants to bring good messages to children (like George Lucas wanted) and Favreau understands the passion of Star Wars fans. That’s why Mandalorian season 1 was pretty good, because they know what is best for the IP.

Putting Jon Favreau in charge is like putting the loonies in charge of the asylum, Jon Favreau only works for Jon Favreau, he didnt give a fuck about Star Wars like he didnt give a fuck about Marvel, that why he sellout to the military to pay for Iron Man and Iron Man II, that why this movies either blame individuals in case of corporate corruption or the Russians, typical of Hollywood this days, and that was the model for the whole MCU, there is always someone to blame for the U. S. problems, if not Hydra, are the Kree, or they need a huge imperialistic power to counter balance Thanos.

Or why they blamed the Russian in the second? Funny thing is, that Disney followed the same plot model for the rest of the MCU movies.

I think you’re going about this too simplistically. The new Star Wars movies have generally had a better grasp on their target audience than their counterparts in franchises like Alien, Terminator, and RoboCop, and the sequel trilogy out grossed the prequel trilogy even adjusted for inflation. Surely they did SOMETHING right.
Maybe it’s easy for me to say since most of my real-life friends and people I hang out around online like The Last Jedi. I just kind of disliked the movie without feeling to strongly about it either way because I’m not really into Star Wars or newer movies.

@@LinkMarioSamus Its because of the Marketing that the New Trilogy as grossed more than the OG or Prequels.
Also the new trilogy came out AFTER and Surfing on the OG and Prequels "Success" and Reputation, and it was Hyped the ever loving fuck out of it.
      You can see by the numbers tho, that it doesn't last once the audiences Eyes where opened and the Hype died out;
      Ep 7 gross over 2 Billions, Ep 8 a bit over 1 Billion, Ep 9 barely 480 Millions$...
The Difference here is that for Ep 7 they fed people with nearly ALL the Nostalgia induced shots they could fit in the trailers, Nostalgia is a POWERFULL sentiment and tool for the marketing to uss.
Doesn't change that Ep 7 was a dissapointement for nearly EVERYONE of the old Fandom, cause its bland as fuck, but people would say that it was a new begining and that Disney still needed to find their mark with the new movies and the franchise, so people gave them the benefice of the doubt.
Thats why Ep8 still grossed 1 Billion and a half, but, people where mor septical and less forgiving, and the fact that Rian Jonhson , that pig headed buffon, systematicly destroyed EVERY SINGLE PLOT HOOK JarJar Abrhams put in Ep7, made the movie a fucking mess, with useless plots and useless characters that has no substance outside been plot devices and dumb expository machines.
This was the point where poeple noticed that Disney had no fucking clue of what to do with the franchise, cause why have such a BAd Ep8 when you had Rogue One before that was a success and that people liked?
And lets not forget about Solo who bombed so spectacularly, that Disney simply canceled any other "Star Wars Stories" Movies projects they had in the making...
By the time we reach Ep9, the Nostalgia as died out, the Hype is no where to be seen, litteraly no one with 10 braincells gives a flying fuck about Ep9, only 480 Millions$, it is a lot, but the movie costed something like 345 millions $ to make and had an additional 100 Millions$ in marketing and ads campaigns.
The movie barely made its cost back.
And by that time the Fandom who has been faithfull and supported the Saga for the last 40 years with their money, their sweat and their passion, even if there was kinda of a division with the prequels, but theyr still was the Star Wars fandom.
With the new trilogy, there was a real Breakage, between Disney and the franchise fans, and the "new" fans that Disney and Kathleen Kenedy "the Force is Female" Politics brought in, bunch of parasite that can only talk in Political agenda's and will NEVER be satisfied by anything, those that the "Wokeness" is strong with, to the point where they're trying to chase out the Real Fan base that supported it all for years, because of bullshit like "Toxic fandom" and "Bigoted Masculinity".
Something that Kathleen and Disney is to blame for, when they did that mini animated series that redo the whole of the OG trilogy, but somehow its Leai who does EVERYTHING, while the male cast is a bunch of bumbling idiots who can't get on their own feets..., it was not about the franchise or the fans, it was about Pandering and Wokeness.
Disney tried to appeal to a crowd that 8 years ago did not gave a flying fuck about Star Wars.
They tried to rile in people who openly mocked Star Wars and the fans 10 years ago as "Nerds", but then suddenly because they twitted how the new SW movies are brave and courageous for having a female lead and "stick it to the patriarchy", they are Star Wars fans?
And don't start me on the Reylo "fans", that are litteraly harrasing the actors so that they leave their companions IRL to be with each other, with people stalking them...
The Old Fan base was, what it was, but the New "fans" that Disney brought in , are all kind of crazies in a bottle...

I still remember people saying that Ghostbuster 2016 was good and it was never meant to the original fans. Why things like Super Mario and Legend of Zelda pleases a lot of older fans while bringing new fans? Because these have quality.

I dont believe JJ set that all up and didnt have an idea at what episode 8 was going to be. All of the questions above were probably going to be answered but JJ might've just wanted to just hook us in from the nostalgia instead of boring us with politics like in episode 1, but because he was at episode 9 he couldnt answer all of the old questions because he had to push forward.

And he always viewed all of those points as flexible. Simply because they had to be in order to sell it to hollyweird.
You can see elements of the final product, and even some elements of the prequels, in some of the earliest drafts.
So yes, he had a plan.
But it was never anything 100% final.
What he also did, was sit down with a team of writers. Concerning episodes 5 and 6.
4 was mostly him and like 2 other people i think. It was really a low budget inde film. George never expected it to go anywhere, because fox and other companies were damned convinced they could barely sell it. But he kept at it, and eventually released something.

Star Wars is a handmedown. It doesn’t actually need a huge push of new content to garner new fans. There are so many old fans that will do the work for Disney because of their love for the original trilogy. So, as long as they create decent content, they’ll do very well. The generation that came before can be respected and pleased simultaneously. They’re the foot soldiers, bringing in a new wave of young people. Like I did with my nieces and nephew. They all love it now because we all watched it together and they enjoyed every minute of it. The new content isn’t really the hook. It helps though. When it’s GOOD Star Wars.

I completely agree with Jon Faverau’s take on how to take on a Legacy property. You analysis was Brilliant as well. This is nothing more or less than we would expect from any other business. As with any other business, when expectations are not met, sales plummet. Take the auto industry. Mercedes bought Chrysler. The expectation of the market was Mercedes would elevate Chrysler. What happened instead was Mercedes quality suffered and their sales, as well as Chrysler’s fabled minivans suffered. Mercedes has to sell Chrysler at a huge loss and is still struggling to regain its luster.
Jon Favreau is the perfect person to take over the reigns of Star Wars. He O.G. Fan and he learned from his Marvel experience how to massage to demanding needs of the market place and fans into a blockbuster, not always perfect, but on the whole juggernaut of a franchise that has enthralled audiences for nearly 20 years‼️

Another great discussion, thanks Thor. I think the reason why the Mandalorian feels more 'Star Warsy' is because the fan service bits, the call-backs, and references are, for the most part, subtle and in the background. Or they're introduced in an organic way, they're 'just there'. They look lived in, just as they did in the OT. As opposed to the ST, where they slap us in the face with forced fan service.

Rian Johnson wrote the Last Jedi screenplay well before the Force Awakens was released, so it is just mostly Johnson being Johnson, not due to reaction to TFA. There was some rewrites in early 2016 but this was done to reduce crazy amount of set pieces. Original screenplay had 160 set pieces, early 2016 rewrites reduced them to 125, so it was about simplifying to keep in schedule and cut costs.
“The original script had about 160 sets in it, a ridiculous amount of sets. I didn’t say that to Rian, because I figured on something this big he’ll find that out on his own. It’s a 100-day shooting schedule,” he explained to THR. “So there’s more than one set a day you have to prepare for.”

I know I'm usually very guilty of that, but my prime example are shows like those in the DCAU, Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Static Shock etc. they're all kids shows that were relatively colorful, and friendly to children but had many mature themes that were great for re-watching when kids grew up and could still enjoy the shows so many years later. Many newer kids shows don't give them that credit, and it's kinda depressing.

The differences in how the ST and the Mandalorian treat major Star Wars themes is informative. The ST kind of bats us over the head with them, while in the Mandalorian, they're woven into the lives and journeys of individual characters in a way that's meaningful and poignant. There's hope because a hardened bounty hunter with a rough past makes a choice to be compassionate and realizes he wants to be a better person. And family is integral to his culture. It means that no matter where you come from, now you belong and you back each other up when in need. That's his and the Child's relationship in a nutshell.
In the ST you hear the word "hope" thrown around a lot, but I feel like there's not enough of a journey for the characters to go through to find it. Then you have Rey trying to figure out who her parents are. But by the end, she still defines herself more by the name she takes than by her relationships with anyone. There was supposed to be meaning in her taking the name, but it's still not clear to me WHO she is. It's not explained WHY she had personal reasons for being attracted to the dark or light sides of the Force, beyond inherited predispositions or just the fact that the hero is supposed to end up on the light side. Maybe I'm missing something, but after 3 films, it ought to be clear.
Heck, the Child has no known name, and Din's wasn't revealed until ep. 8. But we can already clearly see that they're headed in some direction and have personal reasons for struggling between the light and dark in themselves. For instance, the time the Child taps into the dark side is because he's scared for his Mando dad! That's a reflection of why Anakin, Luke, etc. were in danger of falling. They were scared for people they loved. But then it was love that saved them from the dark side. And it's going to save the Child and Din. Can't wait to see more!

I was disappointed with the sequels because I they completely disregarded the mentor relationship which is one of the main draws. Had Episodes VII and VIII been better and built on what came before, then Solo would have done better and the fanbase wouldn't be so divided. Episode IX should have been competing with Endgame for highest grossing film, not trying to win its audience back. If you lose as many fans as you bring in then you've failed. The irony is that I don't feel like the Sequel trilogy was made for the next generation in the first place. The prequels were, arguably too much perhaps, but the sequels on the other hand, don't. The Force Awakens feels like its made for those original fans who were disappointed with the prequels, to the point that it was entirely unoriginal. The Last Jedi on the other hand, certainly attempted to broaden the Star Wars fanbase, but it doesn't really feel like it was made to capture the 12-year olds of today. Rather, it feels like it was made for people from those previous generations who had heard about Star Wars, but never really been all that interested. It´s not the Star Wars movie for the original fans or for the next generation. It's the Star Wars movie for bloggers and soccer moms. And finally, Rise of Skywalker feels like it was made in a desperate attempt to please everyone, but failed miserably.
Each movie tried to appeal to different people, but none of them really went all in on capturing that next generation which will sustain Star Wars for another 40 years.

With the Mandalorian it felt like I was looking at another planet, another culture and a vast variety of races and different beliefs. The sequels felt like a fan movie (with a good budget) but lacked direction. For me personally The Mandalorian is the sequel 'movies' that should have happened. A whole new adventure with little ties to the old movies. The movies after 6 don't feel like its a continuation but an argument between directors on what should be happening. Even the clone wars and rebels had a more fleshed out and in depth understanding of what star wars really is.

I wasn't a big Star Wars fan, mostly indifferent about it. Oh boy The Mandalorian did change it for me tho.... I absolutely loved it

Funny enough I was rewatching the mandalorian last night. I was rewatching the prison break episode and it was really badass.

Love Jon! He understands. Its like the books, the eu at least, they have different tones and ideas but they all feel like Star Wars. You can tell the author knows the characters and relationships, the political atmosphere, the technology...etc. and if the author didn't know they get help from Lucasfilm or other authors, the way it should be!
Not dumping on the Canon books but I've only read one so I just can't speak on them

I agree, the Mandalorian actually feels like an addition to the original 6 movies, unlike the sequels.

Jon resurrected superhero movies, and now he's resurrected Star Wars.
I wonder what's next for him.

If your product is good it will pull in new fans no matter what, to change it is to get rid of old fans for different ones not new ones. The story, the lore, the hero's journey is as much star wars as the force.

The sequels feel more like Marvel movies than Star Wars and then the director of the movie that started the MCU actually creates content that feels like Star Wars.

We want new stories, but including new characters in old themes. The original six had so many strains of 1) responsible adulthood to better the world around you and 2) parent/child relations. Those themes have fascinated people all the way back to Galahad and Oedipus, they will be relevant as long as we are human. It's only when these beliefs are tested by opponents that you discover the mettle of the heroes. The ST rejected the importance of those themes which is why they don't feel like Star Wars.
In this TV show, we are back to the evergreen topic of father and child. In the first six movies Anakin was the child, but changed and became the villain to hurt his children. (even in CW hand drawn, he was still more child. but in the 08 series he shifted until he would his once beloved little sister as enemy in Rebels) That's why the CW feels as authentic as the core six.
The best, most meaningful drama hinges on things everyone can empathize with, even if we've never waved plasma swords or piloted through asteroids. We all have families of some kind, and we all have impersonal or cruel forces that try to mess with us due to greed.
