  • Awesome fishing from docks, channels, and flats despite unseasonably cold weather! The trip was interrupted by an act of stupidity that hopefully will encourage others to keep gear in floating containers. A fast reaction avoided a costly total flip.

    An old Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel tactic I use is to open the bail if I feel like the fish is going to break me off on the pilings. I use a baitcaster so it's just hitting the button which is much easier than trying to open the bail on a spinning reel right to a string fish. But basically I allow the line to go slack, negotiate around the piling in question, and slowly come tight again. It doesn't always work but it does more times than not.

    That shallow snook eat was awesome. They’ve been so hard to get to eat when the bigger ones are laid up getting some sun. The kayak being extra stealthy definitely made a huge difference there.

    I had to chuckle John...I've also never capsized either but have managed to loose two good rigs when I forgot to take them out of the rod holders in my crate when I passed underneath a low railroad bridge - the guides hooked on the bottom beam and both popped out before I knew it. Talk about a dumb move. I enjoy your videos.

    EH , Ya know , knock on wood , I have yet to flip a kayak in 10 years , but I know its coming. It happens to us all eventually , glad you were in shallow water when it happened , things get much more difficult in anything greater than 4 to 5 feet. Solid fish though for sure.

    Hey John! I learn so much from your videos and appreciate all of them. I am unfamiliar with snook and their feeding habits. In the video, right around the 14 min mark, you found the bigger snook between the bank and the weed line. As you were getting ready to throw your line you said there’s no way they’re going to eat. Do they not like shrimp as bait?

      It's a very seamless and intelligent design. If you follow the LLbean link in my video description it looks like they'll knock off $900 if you put it on their card. I was out all day yesterday and finally saw the battery indicator go to 75%. It's a little 8-pound battery. I can't imagine what you'd have to do to come close to wearing it down.

      I have two concerns: The weight of it when lifting it onto wheels on a beach and I use side pontoons for stability fishing in areas with current and they removed the rearmounting plates where I mount them. So I need to figure out those two things. I am going to talk to a couple of the Old Town pro staff up this way and see if I can check their boats out this spring. @@JohnSkinnerFishing

      I have a 2019 Hobie Outback in addition to the ePDL. While I miss the ability to be able to fold the fins against the hull on the Hobie, the electric aspect of this one makes it a no contest winner for me, plus it's easy to stand on. I never stand on the Hobie.

    Just noticed you have a swivel to your leader while the rest of the world is obsessed with braid to leader knots. I'm sure you have your reasons. Care to share? Also, out of all those species you caught, are sheepshead the best to eat?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes on the sheep. That tiny barrel swivel doesn't interfere with anything, it can reduce line twist, and to change a leader I only tie a quick clinch knot. Plus I have more confidence in the knots on either end of the swivel than I do in a braid/leader knot. Coming from a Northeast surfcasting background, barrel swivels are what are used.
