Its great to have 2 people doing this, one to flip rock, one to pounce. Fast little buggers
That was great. I have a hard enough time catching blackfish in season from a boat and here you are catching out of season, early, from the beach, and you’re catching keepers. Amazing. Ultimate angler.
Location, location, location
This is why I highly recommend reading your books. I do the same thing in NC but the crabs will be in the grass and rocks if you can find any rocks. Also oyster beds but beware of oyster beds even with tennis shoes they can go through and cause a nasty cut. You can ask my wife as she got a bad cut doing this one time years ago with shoes on. Great video!
Holy crap John, that first rock you moved freaked me out! looked like the crabs were having a union meeting under there.
I was laughing my ass off watching this. Catching bait can be as much fun as fishing. Also, I wear gloves when doing this. They do pinch and it hurts lol
Scratched by rocks has a higher chance get pinch by little 🦀 s
I wear gloves cuz I get small cuts from the rocks that get infected very easily.
Is this the infamous Pat? Albie slayer?@ridenfish39
@@curtisg.8671 maybe 😂
John, let me call you a keen observer and enthusiast... you are an intellectual in angling!
Just like digging up night crawlers, man you really took me back!
Up in Massachusetts these things are destroying the salt marshes and damaging the fisheries, and when I lived there there were some groups trying to figure out creative ideas for how to deal with them. Over and over "why can't we just eat them and control them that way?" Hang on baby, I'll pick out some claws to make you a crab roll. It'll be ready for our 96th anniversary.
Crab broth with with small pieces potato and carrot, boil till the potato and carrots disolve into the broth...
Perfect for someone who is recovering from a injury/illnesses or even worst (a hang over)...👀👌
I deep fry the ones that have just moulted or have leather hard shells. You can eat them whole like chips. They’re delicious but have a robust flavor. I love them. It’s a delicacy in Italy but they eat much larger ones.
jesus christ I thought there was going to be one under that rock, I wasn't ready.
Sweet fishing, congratulations !
Step one, purchase a multi million dollar house on the north shore,,,,,
Hone a unique skill and sell it anyone and everyone. Boom acquired.
More catch and cook please 🙏
We have those crabs in NC too. Great baits. Oyster beds is where we look for them here
Power lifting and catching bait, a good morning workout. No need for the gym here.
When targeting Tautog, I always thought you had to fish as vertically as possible. How did you avoid snags while casting out?
John, I remember that video and being amazed by you surf fishing for tog. Wish I had that type of jig when fishing the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnels years ago. Thanks!
I always lay the rocks back over so that way I can always come back
It's always the big heavy ones that are loaded for me. My back aches the next day
wow those are some motherloads of crabs, I like your strategy of picking up less but larger rocks to get a bunch quick
I'm fascinated by how overrun those rocks are with these invasive crabs, unreal!
We gotta a cottage in Fairhaven Massachusetts, same exact shore line with rocks. Identical, but we have maybe double the Asian crabs. It's madness. I can get a gallon in 20 minutes. That's a lot of crabs. Actually a nice workout
Awesome video ty John.
1 fish 🐠 1 person 1 Trip 1day 1car 1tank of gasoline 1 expensive fish 🐟
which google earthn version are you using on your phone and which ?
I have an Iphone 12
Hay John great video 👍 what beach is this in New York?
How long can the crabs last in the bucket ??
A couple of days if cool.
How do you store them or do you use them the same day? Im wondering how long they will keep and do they need to be alive.
They'll keep a week+ cool and damp.
I just had a commercial fisherman threaten to tell the authorities on for targeting blackfish out of season me because I caught someone blackfish that I released....
There are some nice seabass and porgies close to shore right now. The crabs work better on these for me because my soft baits get torn up by tiny seabass and porgies. I expected to catch more seabass and especially porgies on this trip, which is why I bothered to bring a cooler and ice. When my second fish was a 20-inch seabass I thought I was going to do well on them, but there were less of them and more blackfish than expected. If you accidentally catch blackfish or fluke out of season, just get them back in the water ASAP. In this video I never walked out of the water with the blackfish. Fluke are still around too. I almost stepped on one.
thanks for the info John...I’ve been probing around catching Sheepshead with the Asian crabs all through the summer with some big porgies in the mix in the western south shore area...
The South Shore Angler Fishing +John Skinner Fishing both of you are my tog inspirations💪🏻 They can threaten all they want. That’s because your catching AND RELEASING their $. We are doing the fishery a service by keeping fish from being sold at market! Nothing wrong with sport fishing for “porgies” 😉 and catching large tog. Early bird gets the big fish. Fished the past 3 weekends (at out local bridge/other south Nassau spots) and caught over 150 fish collectively with 15-20 being keepers (all put back immediately). Heading out East to this territory for Sunday’s opener for a chance at a real big one. Warm weather means nothing, my diving buddies see the blackfish in close in July! Both your contents are always informative, Tight lines gentlemen!
Jlandau763 get ready for some serious lock and load videos next week man!!!
The South Shore Angler Fishing I’ll give you tomorrow’s report as it comes. Not sure there is a way to PM on RUclips but you can always DM me on Instagram @joshlandau
Awesome cool Fish on....
We catch 2 gallons in 30-40 minutes in Cape May, I do bring my son who’s younger and has a good back. Look how many John caught that fast! Free & easy bait quickly! Thanks John great video!
I can't get over the population density!! What do they feed on that so many can exist right on top of each other? Are they cannibals? I'll have to look into this, but it's no wonder you've got such a steady pick of fish with that kind of bait so readily available.
Took a trip from Charleston South Carolina all the way up the coast as far north in Maine as I could get. Turned around mid October. 30 days give or take. Wonderful trip. Missed a lot of good shoreline though. Not next time. Thanks for your videos John.
That looks like a major problem, what are they doing to the ecosystem?
We have the invasive signal crayfish from over there in England basically sterilising the waterways
You have some very fertile rock flipping grounds there John. But in more densely populated higher traffic areas it's not quite so loaded and easy. And yes hurting ones back is definitely a large concern! Sometimes getting that bait isn't so easy.
Dam Iv been always nervous to pick them up. Do they bite? Lol
I’m going to use gloves...I’m chicken
They bite!!
John Skinner Fishing lol good to know 👍🏼
The amount of fish you're catching blows my mind...I can easily go days without landing anything...
Would love to see a quick video on how the rig is tied, and how long the leader is. Are you using a quick clip at the jig? thanks John
No clip. 3-ft 30# leader.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing How do you like to connect the leader to braid? preferred knots ? thanks for the response.
@@edgerrity893 Palomar on the braid. Clinch on the leader.
Those things look just like cockroaches!! You need to get a little net or some other device to scoop those things up...lol!
This was one fun video. Enjoyed the heck out of it. Catching bait and casting them from shore.
Nice vdo's, a question. How do you hook your crab?
What part of new your is that?
Eastern LI
Hi where was this?
Great crab hunting STEVE from NEW England 🏅🥇
Where it’s that ?
Excellent tips for catching bait crabs! I really appreciate the useful advice!
John, I am not sure how technical I can get when asking you about google maps but I'm guessing you are using the Terrain view instead of default view when looking on your phone or desktop. One other thing of interest from a gear and stuff perspective I would love to know is what type of boat you are fishing from in some of your video's. My buddy and I are looking to buy one and your fishing buddy Doc seems to have a great boat but I can never figure out what type it is. As always thank you for the great video's
Doc has a Wellcraft Scarab 30'. I'm using the default view of Google Earth on my laptop.
Hello John ,
A quick question , as an evasive species are they affecting any local Flora or Fauna ?
Thank again for your videos Sir .
I replayed the 50-sec mark for 10 times. Soooo many crabs
We've been having sea bass and sea robins come up to the top for baits off of the beaches in Rhode island, its crazy
You a brave dude, John. I'd be too much of a wuss not to wear gloves.
The way you wrote your books it’s your experience in certain places in RI the fish you have in RI it’s not the fish that we have MA I’m having trouble to understand your books
I don't know if my knees or my back hurt more watching you catch bait! Great video!
Hi John great videos question fishing north Jersey for black fish what size jig for deep water 60-100 ft
It will depend on current. If you can't hold with 2 ounces, fish a conventional rig. Otherwise use as light a jig as you can. I'll guess 1.5 ounces.
can you freeze these crabs for later?
You can freeze green crabs, but I'm not sure how it would work for these.
Great video Mr. Skinner. See you soon. Faisal
FreeZa Sama Mr Skinner? Really?
Yes! Looking forward to that!
Hi John - love your videos. Read through the comments but didnt find an answer to whether or not you could freeze these crabs and use them say a month later.
p.s. Im in CT and used your fluke techniques from shore and caught 30 fish this season - only 1 keeper though but your techniques and advice truly work - thank you for a fun summer.
I wouldn't freeze.
How long will asian crabs stay alive for future trips? Do you keep them in a bait fridge? Do you feed them fish heads? Thanks for the vid.👍
Cool and damp they'll keep more than a week unfed. I'll feed them fish scraps if kept in a bait box in the water.
Great video! Awesome job showing where to catch these crabs. Sea bass and tog from shore... they make a great meal...
You mentioned you would prefer calmer conditions... if so would there be a need to use a heavier jig from shore? It appears you are using two crabs... I guess this depends on the size of the crabs or do you always use 2.
Thanks,
Scott
Less wind and chop makes it easier to feel the light jig. I want to keep the jig weight as light as possible. Sometimes I'll put three crabs on if they're small.
What depth range are these tog? Scouting around wondering how deep to target them . Love the videos, I get sidetracked watching them for hours!!!!
I think 8-10'
If only fiddler crabs were that easy to catch! Question, which is the better table fare...black fish or black sea bass?
Sea Bass IMO.
Thanks for another informative, enjoyable video 👍
Where are you fishing
eastern LI, NY.
Hey john, have a boat very similiar to yours, do you have a video where you describe the trolling motor and gps/fish finder you use either in the video or in the description, thanks walt

Thanks john
Where was this?
Eastern LI, NY.
As always an excellent fishing video
Do I like that rod over the slim wave as far as sensitivity goes when using this jigs? I need the perfect rod for using jogs for tog. I had a st croix mojo last season but I think it’s too heavy for that.
This is an 8.5-footer. I don't know that slimwave has one that long. Either way, this is my choice for this fishing.
John Skinner Fishing I should’ve mentioned I need it for boat fishing. I have the trophy acid wrapped model. I assumed that was the spinning model but now I see it’s 2 pc. Thanks
I prefer the slimwave in the boat.
how about sand fleas are they good for black fish ?
I bet they are. There's not a lot of sand on these beaches though.
Where in new York I wanna fish there
I’m from ny
I always wondered who taught Elias that trick with the crabs...I can't wait to see him soon and let him know who the true crab master is.
I didn't teach him that.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Dang...lol
Hey john do you have a blackfish book?
No.
Great job and video!!!
Beautiful Sea Bass, one of the best eating and most underrated fish.
Cuomo! Yea I'm in New York...lol
Real capture
I have never seen so many crabs at one time under a rock.
There ya go lol
Please give me some loose idea where this is located! :)
eastern Long Island, NY
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank you. I am right across from here I guess, in Westbrook, CT... caught many blackfish from my buddies boat, but up until now no luck from the shore. Would love to be able to get into some of this action without having to rely on the boat!
That was awesome did you fish the same day you caught the crabs or you go a separate day just to catch the crabs and keep them and then fish with them
I did it in separate trips, but could have picked a few crabs where I was fishing too.
In Fairhaven mass I can get 2 gallons in a hour. It's identical to your beach. Sadly, the store bought green crabs with orange guts work much better than these tiny crabs
John please wear a mask when on the boat with the jigging jerks. The president has tested positive.
I appreciate your concern and will try to do better with this.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks for the reply. You have a huge audience who adores you, me included.
John, you have the quickest hands since Apollo Creed, and the most salt knowhow since Ahab. Keep them coming, John!
I’ve never been much of a bait fisherman, but I now love getting Tog/Blackfish on crabs. They are great fighters, and tasty too.
Is this in the sound
Is this in the sound?
Hand held vacuum will do the trick.lol.
Man I wish Jersey had some beaches like this to fish
The glacial ice sheets extended to just around NY Harbor. Mostly sand south of there. Thus those beautiful NJ beaches.
The forecast wasn’t correct...again 🤣
Why don't you wear gloves?
I don't think I could grab them with gloves on.
That line must take a beating..
Not my experience so far. Here's another vid from last fall. I used the same leader the whole trip and never lost a jig. ruclips.net/video/bV6uXRk-Uus/видео.html
John, you are making me a super envious south fork guy. We just don’t have those beaches on the north shore of the south fork. Guess I’ll have to sell and relocate north. :)
Did some blackfish reconnaissance on Sunday looking for unmarked spots (inspired by your side scan video, thanks for that) and ended up with a few choice off the grid locations. 18 fish and limit of keepers (all went back of course). Was also surprised to find them in 15 feet of water this early. Hopefully good tidings of a great blackfish season to come. Thanks again for the inspiration!
You think he’s on the south shore Neil?
No, I’m south fork, not Mr Skinner. Just pointing out that our beaches are rock and boulder free, mostly sand, less hospitable habitat for the fish menagerie that John so deftly rules. Poseidon’s trident holds less sway over the ocean than John’s “Dark Matter“ rod does.
HOLY SHITT
My next target fishes. I will make the trip next weekend or I moved it for the next 2 weeks to get both?.
Last week I was in the canal and I get 3 stripers, than I went to Montuak for my first time but the wind was terrible. I ended fishing in inlet caching 6 blues.
I’m going forward to get my first Montauk stripper!
Where is this location?
Cesar, I don’t think Montauk has any strippers. You normally would have to go to a gentlemen’s club for that. They do have plenty of striPers this time of year though. Sorry, couldn’t resist.
any albies yet john
I haven't seen any. I heard of some to the east in boats, but not on the beach.
I'm learning so much from these John. I'm a freshwater fisherman (for 40yrs) slowly learning my ways for saltwater and not having much luck of ever finding good livebait or just the shop is way out of my routes, this helps a lot to pick my own bait!
I've just started fishing saltwater about a month ago. Having a blast! Really never know what your gonna get.
Learning to throw a cast net helped me gather more free bait; mullet, shrimp, mud minnows, glass minnows, small blue crab. Just like fishing, you may have to move to different spots to find the bait, but you will find them.
Mr Skinner have you tryed using sand fleas there like little crabs in the sand
Sand fleas work great in the ocean and the inlets, I put four on a 7/0 hook
I have a trick for catching those Asian Crabs John. I fish East Marion at low tide and it's Rock City over there. All you need is a small pail like the kind kids use in the sandbox. They make them with sliding lids. As soon as you flip the rock, quickly place the pail face down to trap them all. Twist and turn the pail so it goes into the sand an inch or two. Then push the slide over and you have 90% of the crabs. The dump your catch into the bigger bucket and move to next rock. If you can't find a pail with the sliding top lid, use the same technique as I just described. Place clear saran wrap over the pail with extra slack. Slightly lift the pail and use the extra saran wrap slack to trap them and scoop them into the pail. Takes a little practice but works like a charm. Good Luck!!
Thanks for the tip. They really are tough to grab sometimes.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Also, another trick is to just lift the rock and throw a towel over them and do one big scoop and drop into the bucket. Happy Fishing. Maybe another underwater camera Blackfish Trip this fall under a bridge? That would be so cool to see the Blackfish on camera. Thanks John🎣
John you should offer private beach charters for extra cash...to keep your spots safe im willing to be blindfolded the drive over there and back🤣
Imagine all the police calls and cellphone videos of John with a blindfolded guy in his car. Oh the stories would be endless.
Derek Alexander would be hilarious 🤣
Haha. I’d go for that too.
Well that freaked me out when you reached in grabbed a handful...then, you said, "Owwwwwww". How do you know when you have enough?
When you're bleeding profusely and worrying about flesh-eating bacteria?
is this North shore or south?
north
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks grew up there been gone many years....dont remember too many rocks at Jones Beach
How early in the spring can you catch crabs by flipping rocks?
Great vids, you are the Bob Ross of fishing, a gentleman and professional.
I would be surprised if they're not there.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing yup they were there....Rye NY LI sound.....picked plenty for my Tuesday morning yak trip on the Sound. TY!
