    John, I have fished L. I. Sound and a technique I was taught by Block Island surf fisherman is to have two anglers casting to the same spot with surface poppers. The fish bump the first lure and nail the second lure.

    Years and years ago you asked my girlfriend and i to take a picture of you holding a giant Albie on a beach between macabes beach and hortons dont want to give up the location but been a fan ever since unfortunately these days i live in the north Carolina and only get to long island twice a year to fish i will be up in mid ocrober and just wanted to ask are the bigger fish hitting on the north shore at that time i always fish the south shore bridges and beach in October we use to go to the north shore just for blues.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Год назад

      Bigger bass on those beaches? Not really, not for me anyway. Albies are good in October, and sometimes the big blues. "Big" for the bass is generally 28-35 inches.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Год назад

      A mag darter takes some water pressure against the lip to work right. I'd switch to an SP minnow or maybe a regular Bomber in that cast.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Год назад

      It' entirely spot dependent. I know places where a couple of hundred feet separate a good incoming spot from a good outgoing spot.

    When I fish with a tight drag I seem to lose a lot of fish when they thrash on the surface just after being hooked. Any strategy to avoid this?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Год назад

      I want the drag tight. Losing fish can be due to the action of the rod. This rod absorbs a thrashing fish, as would a Lamiglas GSB.

    • @brucebussert4983
      @brucebussert4983 Год назад

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing I think you've hit on my problem. I use a supersurf or other similar fast action rods, which I like due to their castability. I built a GSB 120L but haven't used it much, it seems heavy and clunky. I'll give it another try.

    Hey John thanks again for very entertaining and informative vid. Two questions. Any idea of depth of water at the end of your cast? Do you use the spook in full dark? Ok last one: you mentioned you switched to swimmers after dark with no luck. How about a sluggo, etc?

    Hey John great stuff as usual. A couple of questions. How deep do you think the water is at the end of your casts? Trying to correlate to where I’d fish in the western Sound. Do you ever continue to use the spook in full dark? Lastly, at the end I think you mentioned you tried swimmers unsuccessfully after dark. In that situation would you try something quite like a darter, slow sink needle or sluggo?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Год назад +1

      15 feet, yes to spook in dark, Sluggo a good choice after dark, or Bomber.

    John, Your opinion on the 60lb Boga. Too heavy?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Год назад +3

      It's one of the most spectacular pieces of equipment I've ever owned. Mine is nearly 30 years old. I never rinse it, and it's completely functional. It also sat on the bottom of the Sound for 5 weeks one time when I lost it and then found it again.

    • @new2guitar1
      @new2guitar1 Год назад

      I'm going to buy one, but I hear a lot of chatter about the 60 being a little too heavy to carry around after a while. I'm not buying it to weigh fish but rather to help control them. I like the extra length of the 60 compared to the 30, just a little concerned about the weight.@@JohnSkinnerFishing
