    my main issue with watertok is basically my issue with every tiktok trend which is that it encourages so much overconsumption, like this idea that you’ve got to buy a stanley cup and an ice machine and all these specific powders and syrups and it’s not enough to just have one you’ve gotta buy them all

    • @natef735
      @natef735 Год назад +186

      Its like that here too, it's usually just a case of the obsessive people just being more prevelant/shared and spread on social media when most people rarely know anyone like that in their real lives. I think social media usually mis-represents most demographics

      One of the bigger reasons why I don't have Tik Tok. I hate the overconsumption aspect of it. People are struggling to get things they NEED to survive simply because a tiktok went viral and people want to get it for 'fun' or lose weight. It's crazy to me. I despise it.

      I really think this point is where the claim that this is a 'white woman' thing comes from, and honestly I can see that- especially since its a repeated trend spear-headed by white women. People getting actually mad that people are doing this is weird though. It's not that deep to blow up people's comment sections because the creator calls it "water," which its not. If its water, than I'll just start calling my Canada Dry Zero sparkling water.

      @ThatOreoBoy The point is not that they shouldn't be allowed to drink whatever they want, it's that they're still calling it 'water' when it's water plus all of the other ingredients. Like we wouldn't call a black iced coffee with flavour syrups in it 'water', but I'd argue they're made exactly the same as these concoctions.
      Also, pretty sure checking sugar solution and flavourings after weight loss surgery is a little counter productive. And you're going to diminish the advantages of drinking more water by filling it with diuretics like sugar and sugar free syrups.

      Yes! I have hyperactive thyroid and have to avoid these like a plague. Consuming those lowers your blood sugar like crazy, because while the artificial sweeteners can't be dissolved by insulin, they're still sweet and it can trick your body into thinking it got sugar to release the insulin. But there's no sugar the insulin can deal with so it will target the sugar already present in your body, eating out on the rations meant for your muscles and brain. This can be dangerous, especially if you drink this on an empty stomach.

    I actually used to drink water with Skinny Syrup almost exclusively, and it kiiinda messed me up. There was a period of time where I struggled with dehydration, so I started adding these syrups to water to encourage myself to stay hydrated. I didn’t know it then, but consuming an excess of artificial sweeteners (even “healthy” ones) can have the same effect on you as actual sugar, and this led to me having to train myself out of drinking flavored waters altogether because I started craving sugary drinks even more.
    It’s also fair to mention how this trend can be an enabler to people with eating disorders. Not to say it’s intentional or that everyone on WaterTok is like this, but at a certain point I definitely started believing I could use flavored waters to discourage myself from snacking or eating. It’s something you definitely need to be careful promoting,

    • @lethfuil
      @lethfuil 6 месяцев назад

      All good points and I just want to add my personal experience, not take away from yours! :)
      For me it's a bit of the opposite. I too didn't/don't like pure water too much and favour sone flavour.
      I drink mainly artificially sweetened drinks during the day (though I drink mildly sparkly water during the night and that stuff I absolutely love too), but it doesn't make me want sweet stuff more at all. If anything it makes me want it less, since it already feels like I had too much sweetness (I usually prefer not sweet things a bit).
      So, overall it doesn't change my craving for sugar, but whenever I want to, I can lower the craving with artificially sweetened drinks.
      The eating disorder point is a VERY good one! I can absolutely see how people could easily use this stuff to avoid eating/consuming anything real. Some put a single, crumbled up cookie, in several ice cube moulds, fill it with water, freeze it and eat it as "dessert" (or the whole "meal"). Imagine using even less cookie, if any and some sweetener for that. It would definitely "work" for too many.

      To add to the ED thing, it reminds me of when I would take a bite of something and try to reframe things so that I wouldn't feel guilty. It is diet culture to make a completely different food/drink and call it what it's not. The difference is these are inherently more unhealthy than plain water, so they're like the reverse of those people who eat pieces of lettuce and call it chips.

    I'm autistic and growing up our tap water wasn't safe to drink and my parents made the choice to buy soda instead. so changing to drinking water when I grew up was hard, and I use flavoring to make it easier. I reuse a $12 cup I got while I was working at Spirit Halloween, and use one type of flavoring over and over as well using a Brita filter now. I've felt a lot healthier and now treat monsters and sodas as an occasional treat. having the flavoring has helped me a lot, but I entirely agree it can be taken too far. From the overconsumption to the risk of causing disordered eating, its important to moderate yourself and make sure you're not unintentionally harming yourself.

    Fun fact: I actually did some research on adding flavor packets to water when I ran out of real juice for my water and found water was boring and the flavor packets add a bunch of sugar as well as change your tongue because it becomes used to the sugary sweet water to the point that it finds regular water boring and it's really hard to revert back to drinking regular water once you flavor your water daily for a certain amount of time

      It's 0 sugar and 10 calories for the water flavoring packets I use for working out. They're Great Value. I put 2 in a 24oz blender bottle to cover "unflavored" EAAs from Bulksupplements. I'd say that even if there's a minute bit of sugar in water flavoring, it's nothing compared to consuming sodas. Or even Gatorade. So in the long run it's an improvement. They're drinking no caffeine (except some packets do contain caffeine) and a lot less sugar and calories than what's in soft drinks etc. It's actually healthier. Maybe not if you use the entire packet in a Stanley Cup though. Idk about that cause that just seems insane. 2 in a 24ox blender bottle is enough to mostly cover up the flavor of pure amino acids so I can't imagine why they'd dump that much into water but to each their own. As long as the overconsumption doesn't lead to a shortage cause I can't stomach unflavored EAAs by themselves. It's like a multivitamin dissolving on your tongue.

    • @fangirl-inator1094
      @fangirl-inator1094 Год назад +46

      @@bbspooks
      From what I read even if there isn't a lot of sugar it can still change your tongue and make it harder for you to enjoy regular water without flavoring because your tastebuds are altered from the taste to become used to the flavoring and not plain water which is overall much healthier for you than any additives or flavor packets in the long run regardless

    • @bbspooks
      @bbspooks Год назад +31

      @Fangirl-inator109 that's flavor in general that does that to your tongue. Sour candy, hot sauce, pickled ginger. There's so many things that aren't inherently terrible for you that effect your taste. If you consume sugar daily, something unsweetened will taste awful. Compared to someone who doesn't consume sugar much, will find something stevia sweetened or perhaps dark chocolate more sweet than bitter where the consistent sugar intaker will find dark chocolate unbearably bitter. (Talking 75%+ dark chocolates.)

    • @bbspooks
      @bbspooks Год назад +17

      @Fangirl-inator109 like I said the additives might not be the BEST but it's a BETTER ALTERNATIVE. Still better than soda or Gatorade.
      Besides some water isn't even healthy for you. Some tap water is contaminated. Some people pay out the ass for alkaline water when it can be harmful because or bodies already do the job of balancing our ph level. Consuming alkaline water can disrupt the balance. Watch Huberman on optimum hydration. Spring water is the best and healthiest water as it has the required minerals to be ACTUAL water.
      That said, the water flavorings aren't that bad in the long run. If you're concerned about additives, you'd have to be concerned about like 99.9% of what the average developed country consumes. Almost everything has additives, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides now. Unless you're raising your own meat, dairy, vegetables, fruit, and have your own spring water well: you're not erasing all of the "bad things" we can consume. The goal is to make it better than before.
      Therefore if water flavorings are assisting people to drink water with flavor packets vs grams on grams of sugary drinks or sodas, then what's the ACTUAL harm?? It's obvious weighing it out that these benefits mean more than a couple of additives. I'd argue these packets have less additives than a can of even DIET Coke.
      And of we get down right into actual science: water isn't what's keeping us hydrated. Fluids are. Water is A fluid. Not the only fluid. Electrolytes keep us hydrated. Water is healthy but there's no inherent benefit of PURIFIED water. Spring water has minerals. It's the minerals within the water that has health benefits. That come from rocks and the ground the spring it's bottled from runs through. Purified water is stripped of all these minerals and nutrient value. Even if you drank 2L of water a day you could still get dehydrated without the proper balance of electrolytes going back into you body. The can depend on your activity level because electrolytes have to be replaced a certain % of what's sweat out through exercise. I could go on but all I'm saying is water flavoring and griping over the "unhealthiness" of it is absolutely trivial and nonsensical.
      Why does one want to shame the "health" factor of how another consumes water? I don't understand. We should be happy they just drink water anyways. Despite the fact the argument of "water is healthy" can go down further rabbit holes of "not all water is actually healthy."
      I'd be more concerned over the fact Tiktok trends create overconsumption which causes supply, demand, and economical strains on products and goods these days. It's consumerism on steroids.

I eventually got off juice and ended up drinking more plain water. Once in a while I still crave something else other than water, so I go for those squeeze flavorings to add to my water. The difference is I add such little flavoring where I still enjoy the slight flavor to my water. -
    First of all, when I was in the darkest part of my ED, I was smashing out sugar-free cordial etc because it was "guilt-free", 0-10 calories at most, and it felt like I was not depriving myself. I loved that. Craving chocolate? Cookies? Even a damn banana? It's okay, just have some sugar-free cordial!
    Tonya saying she does not want to promote disordered eating and self-image is all well and good, but ultimately she IS promoting sugar-free "guilt-free" drinks as a substitute for GODDAMN WATER as a woman who has lost a substantial amount of weight. Don't get me wrong - I am excited for her as she has obviously gotten a new lease on life etc. But it's the same way that Optifast (meal replacement shakes, people about to undergo bariatric surgery here in Australia need to be on a strict weight loss regimen with them for 2~ weeks before the surgery to minimise their weight beforehand) is often used by people with eating disorders. Coloured, pretty, delicious water? Sounds *easy* to replace meals with. It's upsetting to see this being a trend as something that helped me destroy my health for years. Also, she *does* tag her videos as #weightloss #weightlossinspo. I just watched a few of her water recipe videos (honestly as many as I could stomach to watch, so it was like 2.5?) And she does NOT speak about how this should not be used as a meal replacement, or the importance of balanced nutrition at all.
    Also, I'm the opposite of a "chemicals = bad" person, but putting like 6 pumps of artificial sweetener in water just to get barely half of your daily intake is... nauseating

    • @SDBR
      @SDBR 10 месяцев назад

      Anyone promoting any kind of weight loss would potentially trigger someone with an eating disorder. It's unfortunate, but also we can't ask everyone to walk on eggshells. I have a binge eating disorder and I found that working out helps relieve some of my anxiety and reduces the chances of binging. I usually go on IG to watch some of my favorite influencers who I can relate to and it motivates me to do things like go on a walk on during times that I may feel down. Someone with orthorexia may watch the same video that inspired me and feel triggered instead. You can't please/help everyone. There was this shirt that went viral years ago that said "have you eaten today?" it was meant to support those with anorexia, but it could also be triggering to someone with binge eating disorder as there is a lot of shame around eating. People with BED didn't demand that they stop selling the shirt. If it's helping someone, then good. It's on each individual to deal with their own shit. She's helping and inspiring so many people who deal with weight loss and sugar addiction.

    It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. The texture alone is enough to dissuade you from trying it. the "grandma's salad" she's talking about is a southern thing, it's called ambrosia. It's a mixture of canned fruit, jello, and marshmellow fluff, everyone's family's got their own rendition of it and it's usually served at potlucks, family reunions, and on thanksgiving. as a southerner with arfid and textural issues, it's literally my worst nightmare in terms of food, so I get why people who aren't from the south aren't into it.
    p.s. love the number of times you say the word "wudder" in this video, it's very amusing

    You hit the nail on the head when you said it looks like something you’d get at Starbucks. These drinks are closer to juice once you start adding all that to it. They try and justify it by saying “it’s sugar free syrup”, but honestly it’s still not good for you. As someone who doesn’t really enjoy drinking water, I understand the urge to make it fun. I’d been adding lemon to my water, and my dentist recently told me that’s likely what’s been eating away at my enamel and causing all my cavities! It sucks to not really like water, because you know you need to drink it. At the end of the day you can’t beat plain old water, and there’s just no replacing it.
